Chapter 17: Bad thoughts

Mildred Jumped straight onto her bed, before Quickly Typing out her message to Maud and Enid. 'Got the go ahead for a Summer Sleepover. Rules must be obeyed.'

'Spoilsport' Was Enid's reply. While Maud's was 'That's Understandable' .

Once Mildred put her maglet down, she'd finally realised something. She'd Hugged Miss Hardbroom. Again. Miss Hardbroom didn't push her away, or pull her off. But she did seem awkward about it. Then again, Mildred supposed she didn't get a lot of hugs. She was the 'bad cop' teacher.

The one that was always yelling, dishing out detentions and being hard in general. She was a much needed safety procedure for the children. As shown by when Sybil and her friends turned her into 'Softbroom'. Although Mildred wasn't there, the place was practically falling apart without Miss Hardbroom being herself. And with Miss Cackle away for the hearing, they had no one else to fall back on.

As far as Mildred was concerned, Miss Cackle was the heart. She pumped the blood around the school, and kept it alive. But Miss Hardbroom was the Spine, Keeping the school upright, and connecting everything together. No one could make Cackles run the way Cackles should like HB. The Students realised that. So, as nice as it would be for some of them to have a less strict teacher. Someone had to do it. And Miss Hardbroom had no problem being the enemy.

But that also meant.. She didn't get shown as much affection by the students. Just look at Miss Cackle's Birthday. She gets a full Display thrown for her. Miss Drill got Cake for her birthday. Various Classes sang Chants for Miss Bat. And they got Mr Rowan-Webb a box of flies for his last birthday! And that was his first one with them.

But Mildred couldn't for the life of her, tell you when Miss Hardbrooms Birthday was. Maybe she didn't celebrate it? Or Maybe no one else would, so she just left it behind. Either way, it was a depressing thing to think of.

Mildred Couldn't Imagine not celebrating her birthday. She'd have to ask Miss Pentangle about it when they went there. They were friends, she should know! She'd add it to her list of things to do.. One of which was getting rather long.

Speaking of Pentangles.. She was surprised she'd been asked to go at all. She'd be missing a day of school.. Well.. She'd be missing a day at Cackles. She'd still have lessons, just at Pentangles. But, she didn't think her grades were good enough to allow her a day away.

Honestly, Up until now she'd just been trying to get a pass. But, She was going to have to try a lot harder. She couldn't let Miss Hardbroom down. If she did badly on her exams, it's only look bad on her, and her abilities as a parent

Well.. Maybe not as a Parent. She'd only have had Mildred a Week. It's like expecting a shabby dog you got that weekend to win a medal. These things don't just happen overnight. But she didn't want people to think Miss Hardbroom only had her because she pitted her. That just looked bad on all of them! So, She'd try her hardest. And she'd get the grades.. Or at least some of them.

She'd earn her place among the Hardbroom's. They were all she had now. Who knew where her mother was, or what she was attacking. For all Mildred knew, Her mother was right outside watching the school. She seemed to be last time after all.

She.. Loved her mother. But she had managed to twist her past the point of any return. Just the thought alone of what she'd done, and what outcome it had. Made Mildred pull herself into a ball and cry. Even Tabby couldn't Help her at this point. Its a shame that -those- thoughts had to come into her head after the evening she had. The day had been a rollercoaster of ups and downs.

She cried herself into her Pjs, and plonked herself unceremoniously onto her bed once more. She felt plagued to have her guilt and shame constantly shadow her good moments. And darkened her bad. It seemed like she was trapped by it. She knew it had only been a week.. Rome wasn't built in one day, after all. . But she was expecting even a good week to ease the pain that kept stabbing her.

Mildred's Head shot up at a knock at her door. "O-One moment." She yelled out in a shaky voice, Just hoping HB hadn't heard or Noticed. She was just glad she knocked. Mildred jumped out of bed and whipped her face, Unaware of the red marks that still covered it.

"C-Come in!" She yelled out, Leaning against her side in the most 'natural' stance. At least, to her it was. When the door opened, Miss Hardbroom stood, ready for bed herself, But holding a steaming mug. She walked a few steps forward before placing the Mug down next to Mildred, So now she could see it was just a cup of Hot Chocolate.

"Lights out in Fifteen.." Miss Hardbroom started before looking at Mildred. She had an odd expression on her face, Like she was fighting a dilemma in her mind, But instead she just nodded and headed back to the door. "Should you need anything.. You know where I am." As the door closed, Mildred supposed that was as close to a 'im here if you need it' as HB was going to get.

It had not Slipped Mildred's Mind that Miss Hardbroom was.. Socially Awkward. More so after living with her for a few. Despite that, Mildred could tell she was trying. It was Endearing, in many ways. Mildred just hoped HB knew that the offer went both ways.

Just that Interaction alone was enough to put a small smile on Mildred's face and ease her mind a little. She drank her hot chocolate, and went to bed. She'd need all the sleep she could get over the next week. With the tests coming up, she could see a lot of late night studying. It was tiring just thinking about it.

Interesting fact about myself. I enjoy writing fanfics with a lot of character opinions and thoughts, and less talking. Yet, I don't tend to take to Fics with a lot of rambling. I enjoy reading Talking. I just struggle to write it as well!

Anyway.. Less about me, more about your reviews! Lets see them!
