A/N: Just writing a short one-shot because I'm bored and the mood has struck. Please forgive me for the length. I have been out of sorts lately and cramped for time.
OOOOOOOOOO
Logan picked up his phone as it rang with a familiar ringtone and saw a picture of his girl on the little screen. "Calli?"
"Um…Logan, I know it's early and I shouldn't be up, but…" Calli said, rambling.
Logan instantly picked up on the nervousness in her voice. The fear.
"Calli, what's wrong?" Logan demanded, other hand tightening into a fist as his Alpha instincts kicked into gear.
"Oh, it might be nothing," Calli muttered. "But there's a couple of guys scoping my house and looking for a way in…" She let out a little laugh. "You wouldn't….you wouldn't know how I could get some ammo for a really old Russian gun without leaving the house in the next five minutes, would you?"
Logan scooped his keys off of his nightstand and headed for the door. "You're not going to use your granddad's gun, Calli. You don't even know how to use that damn thing."
"I do too know how to use a gun!" Calli protested.
"Since when?"
"Since – since YouTube!"
Logan rolled his eyes and climbed into his truck. "Hold tight, princess. I'll be there soon and whatever you do, don't open the door for anyone. Don't let anyone in that room of yours. Understood?"
"Oh, drat. I really wanted to have a sleepover too." Calli muttered something under her breath that sounded a lot like 'dumbasses never let me prove myself' and then spoke back into her phone. "I've got to go. You know, need both hands to barricade the door and shit."
"Calli, don't you dare hang up the phone," Logan growled.
"Just setting the phone down you dork," Calli said, sounding irritated.
Logan sped off down the road, taking sharp turns and speeding through red lights where he could. He knew that Calli always wanted to prove herself. She was scrappy for a short girl. There was a lot of fire in her. But he hadn't seen any mutations in her that could keep her from getting in trouble when he or Victor weren't around.
"She needs to know there are limits to humans," Victor had said, watching Calli sleep after she'd taken both of them on in one go in bed. "She's going to end up hurting herself or dead if she doesn't realize that she's not capable of doing everything that someone like us can."
Try telling her that, Logan thought, gripping the steering wheel tightly. She knows how to take down a person as soon as they walk through the door. She was trained better than we were at espionage, by her human grandfather. I've never seen her flinch at the sound of a car backfiring and she keeps those guns that he passed down to her in pristine condition. I've seen her take down people just by looking at them from across the room and knowing what they've typed on their phones or electronic devices. Hell, writing across the room isn't even safe…what kind of person was her grandfather to raise something like her?
Either way, he loved her.
Victor loved her too.
And both of them would die to protect her, but right now, Logan seemed to be the only one that she'd called. The only one that she'd sought out for help.
"They've started to try to come in," Calli's voice said to no one in particular. "Great, great, great."
Logan held his tongue and put more pressure on the gas pedal. The truck lurched forward, speeding faster and faster towards his girl. He knew the danger that she could possibly be in with some men coming after her.
They won't lay a hand on her, Logan thought, narrowing his eyes as they darkened to a feral black. If they even try, it will be the last thing that they do.
"I'm invisible," Calli whispered. "They don't know I'm here."
Logan turned onto her road.
"Oh shit!" Calli hissed and Logan heard something explode. "Oh, hi guys. Do you – would you like a refreshing beverage?"
Logan heard the phone cut out with a crunch as if someone had stepped on it. He ground his teeth together and threw himself out of his truck when he made it to Calli's house.
He could smell them. All three men and his girl and that infuriated him. Logan growled and tore into the house, moving quickly towards the sounds of slow heartbeats.
But as soon as he made it to the top of the stairs, the slow heartbeats sped up and then stopped. Logan panicked and ran into Calli's room. She stood there, looking at her hands that were covered in black ink.
"Calli, where did they go?" Logan asked, slowly approaching her.
Calli's gaze shifted slightly to the wall behind him and he turned. Three outlines of bodies were pressed into the wall, splattered in ink and dripping as if freshly made. Logan turned to look at Calli and saw the blackness of her eyes fade away as she looked at him in confusion.
"Logan…?" she whispered, a black ink stained tear falling down the curve of her cheek. "What-what does this mean?"
Logan wrapped his arms around her and held her close. "It means…it means you're safer than we thought…" And far more dangerous…
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO
