Epilogue

Ahsoka's feet pounded on the starry pathway, racing to catch up with Ezra. She had to make him see that you couldn't change the past! Somehow, she was an exception, but only the Force knew why. She knew in her heart that Kanan's death could not be changed.

"Ezra! Wait!" She reached out a hand as if she could pull him back through sheer will alone. The boy was miles ahead of her. "Ezra! I know it's hard, but…" She slowed to a stop as she heard a whisper in her ear.

"Ahsoka. You did not fail."

She turned, facing the doorway she'd almost run past, her eyes widening as it started to glow. More whispers floated toward her. "Snips, you don't realize that you won!"

"Anakin's right, Ahsoka."

Ahsoka felt the blood drain from her face as the image in the gate finally coalesced in front of her. There she was. And there was Obi-wan, and… her old Master.

They were on her cot in the Jedi Temple, Ahsoka squished between her two Masters in a bracing hug.

"In the end, he had to keep you drugged and steal your memory to bend you to his will."

Her breath caught, and tears welled up in her eyes at the sound of her special name in the voice of a man she'd long thought to be dead.

"You did it, Snips. You did the only thing I ever could've asked of you. You survived."

Her heart broke as the words took on new meaning, washing over her like a tidal wave. She'd survived then, yes. And somehow, she'd survived everything that came after. Her men attacking her, hiding from the Empire for long years. All the while, believing everyone she'd ever loved had been brutally ripped away.

The visage of Vader flashed through her mind, the sound of his breath thunderous in her ears, just as Obi-wan in the portal started in on his side of the speech. "Anakin's right, Ahsoka."

The sickening truth she'd just learned in the Sith Temple, the truth that had been hiding in plain sight, echoed through her mind.

Ahsoka. Her Master's voice, mingled with the mechanical tone of the Emperor's right hand.

Her promise. I won't leave you! Not this time.

She looked back at the portal, at her Master holding her as tight as he could, a fierce look of love and pride in his eye. The attachment they'd always been forbidden clear as day on his face. If she reached through now, could she stop what was to come? Could she save the Jedi Order? If she told her younger self, Stay in the Order! Don't leave everyone you ever knew behind… Don't leave Anakin behind.

Could she save him?

The sound of Morai's hooting call reached her ears and she glanced back to see Ezra almost at his destination.

Then Obi-wan's voice cut through all her thoughts, bringing her attention to another truth that hid in plain sight, as only he could.

"None of this was your fault."

Like lightning from the sky, his words cut through to her soul, and the image of Anakin… of Vader, disappeared. What was she doing? Considering the very same thing she was chasing after Ezra for! She allowed herself one last look as the three friends - the three family members, she amended - embraced.

Shutting her heart off from the almost overwhelming longing and sadness at the sight of what she could no longer have, she turned away. The portal went dark.

As she raced toward Ezra, one final whisper followed her from the dark.

"You didn't deserve any of it."

Her feet pounded on the starry pathway as she thought an answer to her long-lost mentor. Whether I deserved everything that happened or not, this was the path that was placed before me. And I will walk it to the end.

After the Emperor had chased them out of The World Between Worlds, and she stood alone on the steps of the Sith Temple, she pondered what the next step on that path might be.

She had learned a heartbreaking truth today. But if anything, it only served to strengthen her resolve to bring justice to the Empire. Justice for her Master. For Anakin was surely gone, as sure as if it had been a clone's blaster that did it. Her words to Vader echoed in her mind. Then I will avenge his death.

Ahsoka turned, walking deeper into the Temple of Malachor, already well on the way to mending her broken heart. She knew it would take time before she was back to her old self… if she ever fully could. But this…

This was a start.

The End
