Wing Princess

Summary: It's not Sofia's first time playing matchmaker except this time she has a dilemma. How do you pair up the most timid boy at Royal Prep with your sister when she's oblivious to his feelings for her? *Written for Sweethearts Day prompt five: School Dance.

Now that the children were getting older, Miss Flora, Miss Fauna, and Miss Merryweather had decided that it was time for them to have their first school dance.

While the boys groaned miserably at the idea, the girls adored it, conversing on ideas for their attire as soon as the last school bell rang.

"Sofia, may I talk to you please? Alone?"

Sofia turned toward the voice that spoke to her in a low, almost hush like whisper and adjusted her school bag, smiling warmly at the Mezbez prince.

"Sure Desmond. What do you need my help with?" Sofia asked.

"I'd rather not discuss it here. Why don't we go to the library?" Desmond suggested. "I'll be able to explain it to you there."

She didn't know what it was but it seemed to be a pretty big deal to Desmond as she let him lead the way.

It seemed that they, aside from Mrs. Higgins, were the only ones in the library at the moment which made Desmond feel at ease as Sofia looked up from a book on the etiquette of dancing.

"So what exactly is this it you're talking about Desmond?" She asked.

"Well I want to take Amber to the school dance but I don't know how to ask her properly without getting scared I'll choke up," Desmond confessed.

"So do you like Amber or do you like like her?"

"Like like her except I don't know what to do. I'm afraid I'm going to do something to upset her."

"Don't worry Desmond. I'll help you!" Sofia grinned. "I have experience in matchmaking." She paused, biting her lip. "Okay maybe with my aunt and uncle but maybe what I did with them will also work for you and Amber."

Desmond sighed, cupping his hands to his face as he gave her a hopeful smile. "I trust you Sofia so let's do it."

"Yay!"

It was harder than she thought it would be. Everything she tried that week ended up in failure.

Sure she expected him to be timid with singing, performing a poem, using a musical instrument, and just basically talking to Amber but just when Desmond's idea of using plants to express his feelings was close to succeeding, it immediately backfired due to rain during recess.

She sighed, glumly sliding on the chair of her throne. All her good ideas were dried up like the deserts in Tangu.

Now what was she going to do?

Sofia placed a hand to her face, staring fondly at the stain glass window that got repaired three weeks after James broke it accidentally. She arched an eyebrow at the sight of her parents holding hands lovingly.

"Sofia? What are you doing here?" Miranda asked, noticing her daughter's glumly expression as she sat beside her.

"Oh hi Mom. I'm not doing much except for realizing that love's completely hopeless," Sofia sighed.

"Why do you think that sweetheart?"

"Because I tried all week to help Desmond get together with Amber before our first school dance but nothing worked so I'm wondering how did you and Dad do it? How did you fall in love so quickly?"

Miranda chuckled, stroking her daughter's hair. "I don't remember us falling in love being so immediate."

Sofia frowned, stunned by the sudden reveal. "What do you mean? You were so smitten with Dad that I just assumed that he dated you once and then asking you to marry him."

"Sofia, you remember those trips to the castle I told you about?"

"You mean the ones where only you could be present while I stayed with Mrs. Hanshaw until you got home?"

"Exactly. Those weren't trips. They were dates. Your father and I wanted to get to know each other so we took things slowly," Miranda explained. "By doing that, it allowed us to go to the next step in our relationship with ease."

"So Desmond should do the same thing with Amber by taking things slowly?" Sofia suggested. Getting a warm, reassuring nod from Miranda, she beamed. "Thank you Mom for helping me."

"You're welcome sweetheart. Now run along as I believe Amber scheduled you for a gown fitting in a few minutes."

"Doesn't she know it's just a school dance?"

"Amber may be growing up but when it comes to the word simple, I don't think it's caught up to her yet," Miranda smirked. She kissed Sofia's forehead affectionately. "I love you so much sweetheart."

Sofia got out of her throne before giving her mother a crushing hug.

"I love you too Mom."

The day of the school dance had finally arrived as Sofia with her hair in a Princess Belle inspired updo and dressed in a lavender dress that stopped at her ankles looked around the room.

It had been weeks since the enchanted science fiasco as she called so the school dance was a nice change of pace as she giggled, spotting James already stuffing his face with cookies.

"If he comes back home tonight with a stomach ache, it'll be on himself Hildegard," Amber grumbled, dressed as elegant as ever while Sofia stifled a giggle at the humongous hairstyle she sister had chosen as the older Enchancian princess frowned, noticing her by her lonesome. "Oh Sofia here you are looking radiant in the eyes of every prince here and yet you're standing off to the side. Do you need me to pick someone to be your dance partner?"

"Amber, I'm fine," Sofia smiled. "In fact, I do have a dance partner ready for you but he's shy."

"I think I saw him earlier," Clio piped up. "In a corner with a bouquet of enchanted roses."

"Enchanted roses?" Amber beamed. She took Sofia by the arm and began dragging her towards an occupied corner of the room where the supposed timid prince was standing. "Sorry ladies but this prince is mine!"

"So why am I here?" Sofia complained, rubbing her sore arm.

"For moral support."

Sofia blew a lock of hair out of her face before waving her hand, signaling the Mezbez prince to come out from behind the shadows.

"Good evening Amber. These are for you," Desmond smiled, handing her the enchanted roses. He blushed sheepishly, fidgeting with his bow tie. "I-I heard they're your favorite flowers."

Amber smiled, putting one of the roses in her hair. "Thank you for the kind gesture Desmond." She took off her white satin gloves and placed them in her dress pocket, holding out her hand. "Would you like the honor of being my dancing partner? Just for tonight of course."

"I'd love to."

Sofia beamed, twirling around in a sense of accomplishment before crashing into someone holding a cup of punch.

"I'm so sorry. I'm incredibly clumsy," She blushed, feeling some fruit punch drip down her face.

"I'm just glad I caught you before someone else took you as their partner," Hugo smiled, helping her to her feet. "So do you mind telling me what you were doing before crashing into me?"

Sofia smiled, hearing Amber and Desmond enjoy each other's company as she held Hugo's hand affectionately before joining the two lovers on the dance floor and winked at Desmond who gave her a small wave.

"Helping someone find their true love in what I am sure to be the start of many, many happy years to come."
