Ch 3a: Growing Jealousy?
"—ra… Kor… earth to Korra." Kuvira says before smacking the back of her head.
"Ow—" jolting slightly, Korra grabs her head. "What the fuck Kuv, that hurt!"
"That's what you get for ignoring me. More like, what are you contemplating about that has your ass in la-la land? You've been acting funny ever since you fucked Sato." She says before topping it off with a smug ass grin.
Korra smacks her in return. "One, her name's Asami, and two, it's been months since that one night stand! We're totally chill, thank you very much."
"Yeah, just 'chill' ey, I see you…" she cooed before getting an annoyed glare from her friend. "Hey, don't give me that look. You're the one who's playing friends with her. That's on you, you know those rumors about getting close with her. People say that those who get too chummy with her disappear one day. Words on the street are that her brothers are scary as shit so, if you want to dab your feet into that shark-infested waters, it's on you."
Korra rolls her eyes, "Uhuh sure… says the Beifong."
"Hey." Kuvira raised her finger, "I was adopted so I don't pack as much punch, excuse you."
"As if! More like you still do, if anything people fear you more because of your backing and the way you act, you dictator!"
"What was that you peasant!"
Laughing loudly, Korra runs ahead before Kuvira catches up to her. Once by her side again, she lightly slaps her arm.
"Heh, you know I may be like a dictator but at least I ain't a princess." Kuvira retorts, regaining her smugness tenfold.
On that note, Korra frowns. "Don't call me that!"
She raised her arms up in innocence. "Hey, just saying… out of the two of us, I think you'd win the hierarchy game."
Korra looks at their surroundings carefully. "Shut it will you! You know… I really regret telling you my secret."
"Nah it's the best thing you could ever do."
"Shut up."
"Nah you shut up."
Staring at Kuvira with a sharp glare, she had that smug ass face as always. After a few seconds, Korra huffs before giving up. They started their walk towards the canteen again and she went back to her thoughts while Kuvira started a rant again, not that she was listening to of course. She had other priorities such as those soft lips that touched her cheek not too long ago.
What did that kiss mean…?
Flashbacks of when Asami reached out and gave her a kiss on the cheek flooded her mind. Her heart began thumping loudly at the thought of that kiss. She grabbed her chest, feeling her blood-pumping organ do its job in all earnest.
We're just friends…
It wasn't until Kuvira slapped her arm repeatedly that she came back to reality. "Hey Korra, look! It's your gay crush."
Grumbling at that annoying attitude, Korra looked in the direction she was pointing at. She immediately saw who she was referring to amongst that vast crowd of students before her face softened slightly. It was Asami.
Asami… next to some guy on her arm.
For some reason that rubbed Korra in the wrong way. Kuvira turned to her before finishing the blow. "Damn, I swear she must get some pretty good dick. Rumors have it that Mako has a pretty big cock because apparently, he's thick and long. Man, I wish I could get myself some of that cock."
Scrunching her nose at that announcement, Korra wasn't sure where to react. The fact that Asami might be sleeping with him or the fact her best friend knows about these details.
"Disgusting Kuv… I don't need to hear about your lack of dick. Besides, what's so great about dicks anyways? You know that dildos are ten times better right? They always stay hard and never get tired. Plus, them vibrator ones too, mmh!" She lets out an audible chef's kiss, "Fun times my friend."
With a simple shrug, Kuvira couldn't retort. "True true but still… there's something about that feeling you get from milking them out you know?"
Korra wanted to gag but she understood her friend. It wasn't as if she didn't know but the thought of Asami getting some from him just made her… annoyed. "Come on, let's hurry, I'm starving." She wasn't that hungry actually but standing there and watching Asami get along with some guy was rubbing her wrong.
Of course… Kuvira notices her bizarre behavior. "What's got your panties in a bunch?" She looks at her friend before looking back in the direction Asami was in. She then hums before smirking, "Wait a sec… Korra, you actually like Sato don't you?"
She snapped back at her friend a little too quickly. "No I don't!"
"Oh shit!" Grasping her mouth, Kuvira had this shit-eating grin. "You totally do! Hah! I knew it! You totally have a thing for older women. Thank the spirits she's not a milf this time, phew!"
"You ass! I do not have a thing for older women nor a thing for Asami!"
Kuvira rests her hand on Korra's shoulder. "Denial is the first step to acceptance, my friend." She sniffles playfully, "My baby's finally growing up, she's finally heading down the legal path!"
Korra was about to rip Kuvira anew. "You son of a—"
"Hehehe~" being the dick she was, Kuvira couldn't resist before she screamed, "HEY SATO!"
Her friend immediately froze up. "Kuvira what are you—" she flinched and didn't even know how to react. Hoping that for some reason Asami didn't hear that, she fearfully turns to look in that direction.
Asami had, in fact, heard her name and she had this confused look on her face. When they made eye contact, she smiled slightly before waving at her. Korra's only face blew up and she shrunk in place before bashfully waving back. She could hear Kuvira snickering in the background and it wasn't until the awkward wave session ended that she was worked up again.
She tugged at her friend's arm before whispering a shout in disbelief. "Kuvira, you bitch!"
"What?" She laughs before continuing their way to the canteen. "You have to say hi to your boo."
"I'm telling you, we're not a thing! Besides, she's probably with that guy, what's his name again…. Mako? They made a good pair." She says softly before having this sad puppy dog-like pout.
This time, Kuvira gives her a funny look. "You're kidding me? Sure Mako's hot and all but if you were by Asami's side, pssh, dude. Don't even get me started, he ain't got nothing on you. Besides, you don't even know if Asami's even straight or gay. Maybe them boys as just a façade, I betcha she's totally a lesbian if anything. Rich girls tend to be gay, what can I say?" She tops off with a shrug.
Korra let out a groan. "That's a bold statement. Who are you to judge her sex preferences?"
"What, you're the one who won't spill the beans about your one-night stand and or the deets about your relationship with her. Gotta at least toss me a bone or something."
"There's nothing to say. After we addressed the elephant in the room, we've just been chilling and talking about stupid things. You know, what most friends do."
"Yeah, well most friends don't have one-night stands in the first place." She easily counters back, "Whatever you dounce. I keep telling you she's totally interested in you but at this rate, you'll be single and friend-zoning her into the next century."
Grumbling some more, Korra was tired of this conversation. "Our relationship is completely platonic and I would rather keep it that way than risk losing it." For various reasons…
"You keep telling yourself that bud." Kuvira pats her back, "Let me know how it goes."
"I really hate you, you know that?"
"Mmh, yes I know. Hate you too, sugar bunch."
With a deep sigh, Korra took one last glance in Asami's direction before mumbling to herself. "They really do look like a good pair…"
"Mh? What was that? You say something?"
Korra looks forward again. "Nothing. Let's hurry, I think I'm feeling nachos today."
Kuvira snaps her fingers at that. "I get a burger and some fries then we share?"
"You gotta deal."
xXx
Shakily raising herself up the bar, Korra let out a controlled breath before setting herself down. She pops down onto the floor with a solid thud before breathing out some tired breaths. Soon enough, she takes off her weight vest and strap before cleaning up her station. Many tired huffs later, she grabs a towel and wipes away her sweat before noticing a couple.
"Come on Bo, come on! You got this set!"
The thick guy lets out a grunt before he pushes through his last dead-lift and then drops the weight with a mighty hup. His girlfriend applauds his accomplishment.
"Yes! Way to go Bo! You finally beat your record!"
"Haha yes!" He had a big grin on his face, "It's all thanks to you Oppy, thanks for the support!" He walks over to high-five his girlfriend and gives her a kiss on the cheek. "You're the best!"
Resting the towel on her shoulders, Korra drinks some water and starts fanning herself with her shirt. Once she catches her breath, she finishes wiping down the equipment and takes her stuff before heading over to the locker room. Then, once she was freshly showered and dressed, she swung her gym bag over her shoulder before heading to her Jeep. By the time she chucked her bag into the back, she got in before checking her phone. Another rowdy pair quickly catches her attention though.
"Pleaseeee, you have to come with me to this cafe! It's their grand opening sugar bear!"
"I don't know love, you know I don't really like crowds…"
"Aw please. Come on, I know you love tiramisu and it's their specialty! I betcha it's gonna be so good!"
"That's…"
"Please please pleaseeee!" His girlfriend pleases with pouting lips.
The guy flinches. "Okay okay, fine. I'll go with you."
"Yes!" She squeals in happiness before latching onto his arm, "You're the best baby!"
"..." Korra stops staring at them before starting her car and shifting into reverse. As she did so, she couldn't help but mumble to herself. "Geez… what's with these couples acting so cute and shit…" a moment passes before she huffs. "They all make a good pair too, ugh. Maybe I am feeling lonely these days…"
Many heavy sighs later, she pulls into a supermarket to do her weekly shopping. And, since she was still cooling down, she had yet to put on her lightweight sweater but brought it with her anyway knowing she'd get chilly later. As she pushed her shopping cart down the aisles, she scanned the shelves.
"Might as well restock my pasta…"
She made her way over to the dry foods aisle before grabbing an abundance of different kinds of lentil and wholewheat pasta. After that, she makes her way over to the fresh produce.
"Let's see…"
As she picked up a variety of vegetables, she couldn't help but notice the child gawking at her peripheral vision.
"Mommy, why is that woman so buff! She has so many cool tattoos too!"
Smiling slightly, Korra purposely flexes her arm to reach over and grab a pack of spinach.
"Yona! It's rude to stare at others!"
"But mommyyyy, she's so coolllll! I wanna be like her when I grow up!"
When the mom and Korra make eye contact, she bows repeatedly before quickly pushing her daughter away in embarrassment. Korra laughs softly before feeling a chill creep up on her spine. She shivers before grabbing her sweater and putting it on. Then once she grabbed what she needed here, she went on over to the meat section and grabbed enough for the week.
"Ahh shoot right… Kai wanted some snacks…"
Making a quick detour, Korra pulled up the list her brother gave her and added what he wanted. Once she crossed out the list, she was satisfied with what she had when she rolled past the bread aisle. She pulls over to the side to double-check her cart. All of a sudden, a random thought made her smile. She then opens up her phone and pulls up one of her conversations.
Not a Pillow Princess Sato (12:34): *image of a breakfast bagel & dessert bagel*
Not a Pillow Princess Sato (12:34): see look, mini bagels are so versatile!
Not a Pillow Princess Sato (12:34): they're the best so u can't prove me wrong!
Chuckling to herself with a soft grin, Korra played back the memory in her head.
xXx
"Alright, I got it!" Korra snaps her fingers, "Name one food that is your guilty pleasure. Mine is donuts, ugh, they taste so good but are the enemy of all fitness endeavors."
Asami giggled softly as she crossed her legs. "I don't know if I have one Korra. I eat most things just fine."
"Come onnnn," she taps Asami's foot from below the cafe table. "There has to be at least one thing."
Grabbing her chin, Asami scrunches her eyebrows in thought. "Mmh… well…" she thought long and hard and then after a moment she finally replied. "Mmh… well if I had to choose, maybe mini bagels?"
"Mini bagels?" Korra repeats. "Huh, well what do you know?" That's surprisingly kind of cute.
"What?" An eyebrow shot up in defense. "They're adorably small and nicely proportioned, thank you very much. Besides, they're definitely underrated. You can make a breakfast sandwich or even fancy ones with it if you wanted and they go well both savory or sweet."
Korra laughed happily. "Touché heh, alright. I gotcha, next time I'll make you some homemade ones."
"Homemade ones? You can cook?" She says with a tone of disbelief.
"Hey what's that supposed to mean!"
"Sorry, I didn't peg you to be the cooking type but I should've known better. You clearly take care of your body." Asami bit down on her straw as she eyed Korra's body.
Noticing that slight innuendo, Korra cleared her throat and shrugged it off. "Yeah of course I know how! It's the staple knowledge to staying fit. Anyways… just you wait, I'll make you the best bagels one of these days!"
Asami looks her in the eyes before chucking with a slight shake of the head. "Alright then, I'll look forward to them."
xXx
With that lingering conversation in mind, Korra hums to herself. She stares at Asami's contact name before her eyebrow twitches.
"Maybe I should change her contact name cause this one is…"
She blushes at the thought.
"Yeah lets change it…"
After a few moments of thinking, Korra ends up with: Mini Bagel Enthusiast.
"Sure, sounds good…"
Korra then stuffs her phone back into her pocket before making her way over to where the flour was located. Once there, she pulls out her phone and does some extensive research on what the best homemade recipe for bagels was. After some time, once she was satisfied with said recipe, she grabbed the newly needed ingredients before finally heading to check out.
By the time she was home, she quickly made herself a quick snack of sliced apples with chunky peanut butter. As she snacked on it, she cooked herself a simple veggie and meat stir fry before carefully measuring out all the ingredients for the bagels. By the time she was done eating, she was placing the mini bagel dough into the boiling water. Once she set the timer, she realized that she should text Asami.
"Shoot… hope she's home."
Korra then whips out her phone to text her friend.
Hey! I made some mini bagels at home & accidentally made to much, u want some?
"And… sent."
She then looks back at the stove and flipped the little buns around. Many doughs later, by the time they were toasting in the oven, Asami responded.
Mini Bagel Enthusiast (18:06): Sorry, I was busy for most of today but sure? I'll be home shortly. What's the occasion?
Korra could practically see the smile on Asami's face. She quickly texted back:
What? A woman can't enjoy mini homemade bagels?
Mini Bagel Enthusiast (18:06): so ur telling me u just made mini bagels out of nowhere?
Yup.
Mini Bagel Enthusiast (18:06): hmm… here I was hoping u made them just for me ;P
Korra almost dropped her phone. She did make them out of curiosity but at the same time, the only reason why she made them was because Asami had said they were her favorites. So… ultimately it was because of Asami that she did in fact make mini bagels.
Mini Bagel Enthusiast (18:06): Anyways, I'll let you know when I'm back. Maybe you can have some at my place too? I'll bring home some really good cream cheese on the way back. I know this chef that makes them for his restaurant so it's not available anywhere else.
She almost forgot to reply.
Alright sounds good! I'll finish up and get ready then. See u in a few?
Mini Bagel Enthusiast (18:07): yeah, see u in a few ;3
Korra chuckles at that emoticon. Amidst her many text conversations, Asami occasionally threw in some of those rather than use emojis so she found that cute. Apparently, she wasn't the type to text these sort of messages, understandably so thanks to her prestigious and strict upbringing, so it was a nice fresh breath of air when she did send them. Not that her heart felt light and warm, she did her best to make the rest of the bagels perfect. She crouches down at the oven to look at them.
"You hear me guys? You better toast nicely and perfectly! I gave you a lot of love so do me a favor and taste amazing for the gal that's about to eat you?" She preaches as if they'll understand.
One huff later she gets back up to prepare a side dish.
"Guess a fruit salad sounds nice?"
xXx
After Korra had sent Asami a text to inform her that she was here, once again, she found herself gawking at the enormous state of the building. It towered over her minuscule size and she was honestly a fly compared to it.
"Man, do I feel out of place… well… not like it's the first time so here I go."
Finally closing her jaw, she looks down at herself. The bagels were neatly packaged into a paper box while the diced-up fruits she made were nicely tossed in glassware. As for her clothes, she decided to wear something that wasn't her usual lazy wear, aka, a white tee, denim hoodie jacket, and navy blue jeans. One neck crack later, she walks up to the entryway and looks at her reflection. She quickly fixed her hair before calling it good.
"Sure, of course, I look fine…"
Once she stepped inside, she noticed the door reception man this time. For some reason, she felt semi-bashful and blushed slightly before nodding and acknowledging his presence. He simply nodded back and Korra high-tailed it to the elevator. She clicks the button to the seventh floor this time around and not the wrong one. Finding herself space out as she rode on up, she started tapping her foot to the beat of the elevator music. Soon enough, the door clicks open.
"Alright… act natural."
She pauses in front of Asami's door right to gather her thoughts.
"Shit… why am I getting all nervous all of a sudden?"
She felt her heart thumping away and butterflies fluttering around in her stomach. Grunting to herself, she eventually takes a deep breath before ringing the danged bell.
"Just act natural."
A few seconds of eerie silence pass before the door clicks open.
"H-Hey! I know this is random but—"
Her mouth falls open when she sees Asami.
"Hey sorry for the wait, I just finished showering," Asami says as she dries off her wavy long hair with a fluffy-looking white towel.
Watching as a droplet of water rolled down her neck to her collarbone, Korra had a hard time processing.
"Oh… uh… um n-no worries! It's all good. Hope you're uh h-hungry for some dinner?" Damn that red blouse looks good on her. Wait, is she wearing a bra?
Asami giggles, "Bagels for dinner?"
Korra was trying the best she could to indirectly scan her body. Yup no bra. O-Oh spirits… she wearing booty shorts too… fuck her legs look good.
"Korra?"
She finally snaps out of it and could've sworn Asami was smirking for a hot second but is faced with a neutral expression.
"Sorry, I was just spacing out, and excuse you, you mean dinner with mini bagels! I tried one earlier and mmh! You've converted me. I am a believer now, mini ones all the way! This will be your best dinner yet."
"Pfft—" Asami laughs before stepping aside, "Alright well hopefully I skipped dinner for the right reason. Come on, why don't you come inside already?"
"Oh. Yeah. Right."
Korra quickly steps in and almost trips over her own toes. She had a smooth save if you asked her but that didn't stop Asami from snorting. She glares at her friend with a raised brow.
Asami simply walked off with an amused smile. "Make yourself at home Korra, I'm gonna go finish up in the bathroom real quick."
"O-Okay!"
With the biggest hurdle out of the way, Korra brushed off whatever shame she had before setting her stuff down in the kitchen. She mindlessly began unpacking before admiring her condo.
"Damn… this is one nice ass house though…"
Staring around, Korra was impressed by the luxury items yet at the same time felt somewhat disappointed. This home didn't exactly feel like 'home' so that was a… downer. She knew at first hand what having power means and if one isn't humble about it, it could lead them down the wrong path. From what Korra could tell about Asami, it suited her yet at the same time it didn't. By the time she finished setting things up, Asami finally waltzed into the kitchen.
"Sorry for the wait."
Korra gulps at how plump Asami's lips looked.
"So tell me, what type of bagels did you make? Otherwise, we can't be friends." She jokes hoping for the best.
Blinking, Korra smiles before dramatically showing off her surprise. "Of course… the OG plain ones… and sesame of course."
Asami gives her the most serious judging face out there which makes Korra tense in discomfort before she softens up. "Guess we're still friends then."
Korra lets out a lopsided grin. "Cool~" she then leans against the kitchen island counter before saying, "So about that cream cheese you were talking about."
Smiling back, Asami walked over to her fridge to grab it. "Are we seriously going to have mini bagels for dinner?"
"Why not?" She replies with a shrug, "You got any plates?"
Asami closes the door with a bump of the hip before heading towards the cabinets. "Of course." She reaches inside to grab two plates before setting it down on the counter. When she notices the bowl of fruits, she gives Korra a questionable look. "With a side of fruits?"
Korra throws her a wink. "Extra flavor."
She couldn't help but laugh. "Alright you dork, if you say so."
"Yup! Now dig in, these babies are the best mmh!" Korra threw a chef's kiss before starting off by serving Asami one of each kind. "There's plenty for seconds so dig in."
"Sounds perfect."
What Korra learned that day was that Asami loved small things ranging from food to even collectible items. She mentioned that she loved collecting cute objects and Korra didn't believe her until the moment Asami showed Korra her mini bear collection series. That made her jaw drop. She couldn't believe that she had a whole room dedicated to small plushies but then again, it wasn't too far-fetched.
It sounded just like her after all.
