And then the Clouds

She knew better than this.
She really did.
The cloak of night kept them hidden, unseen. The bedroom was darkened enough, with only a dull lamplight to keep any unsuspecting monsters at bay.
Saber inhaled deeply, and she moved towards Irisviel, the familiar scent of lavender and skin beckoning her. Irisviel's hands weaved through her hair, and the feeling lulled Saber, for the first time in what felt like ages.
This all could have been a fantasy, something in a dream, something that was never real.
The world did not matter, the Holy Grail War did not matter.
Irisviel did not want to be waited on hand and foot, a vessel, a prize to be won. Saber did not want to fight an eternal battle, not a King who had lost their kingdom. Those stark realities did not matter with either of them.
The heat of bare skin and tender, soft kisses were all that they felt.
This was their moment, and they did not want to waste it.
The dread, the fear, and the uncertainty between them was replaced by passion. Saber learned in, and pressed her lips onto Irisviel, softly, sweetly, and most delicately.
Irisviel kissed Saber back, threading their hands together, and she was lost in such a feeling, her heart beating, burning brighter, a wave of heart cresting.
Times to themselves became so infrequent these days, with everything so unpredictable, so dire, and any chance they had would be lost forever.
Saber gently pulled away from the kiss, to only move forward and kiss Irisviel again. Her hands reached out instinctively, cupping the other woman's face, and she felt delicate fingers brush past her skin.
Irisviel curled herself onto Saber, her body warm and cold. Saber only smiled; she accepted the embrace, blinking away the tears forming in her eyes.
It seemed impossible that she would have this, that she shouldn't do this.
But this would suffice, this would do for now.
This very moment was what they had left.
