Ch 14a: Back to where...?
"Breaking news! Can you believe it, folks? Today finally marks a month since the former CEO of Future Industries, Hiroshi Sato, has been arrested! His intense trials are underway but rumor has it he will be paying the maximum sentence! While the clear details are still unknown, what has been leaked to the public so far is that he had been trading with local triad groups here in Republic City! That's right folks! You heard it! He had been providing the terrorist resistance with guns and machinery to cause uproar and mayhem across our beloved city!
To this day, citizens still can't believe that their trusted CEO was behind this mess; however, what is even more unbelievable is the identity of the one who blew the whistle on him in the first place! It was none other than his own son, the first heir in line to the company, Naofumi Sato Suoh! His name is plastered on every headline till this day and he is the talk of the town!
Additionally, aside from publicly apologizing for his father's heinous crimes, Naofumi has also sworn to take the lead in starting a relief act for the victims of triad brutality. Shockingly enough, this act will be overseen by Future Industries and they have sworn to help these folks financially and provide them with the necessities needed to survive in our harsh economy. Furthermore, he has also started a non-profit organization campaign with his own company along with his wife, Kaede Suoh, under Suoh Corporations.
While some call him heroic and some call him fake… this shocking news and scandal has without a doubt shaken Republic City like no other! Citizens are conflicted with their opinions about Future Industries. While those loyal to the company support Hiroshi Sato's children and their attempt at amends, some doubt their credibility claiming that if such a huge corporation can hide such heinous crimes, who can tell what else they're hiding? The Sato family is the biggest gossip of the town as attention is constantly being thrown their way! It has been decades since Republic City has been faced with such devastating and shocking news.
Stay tuned with Flaming Hot News for more updates."
Grunting at the news announcement, Asami quickly shuts off the TV before turning her attention back to her laptop. She then slouches onto the table before mindlessly scrolling through several data charts. Her eyebrows were heavily creased as she calculated many equations and problems in her head. Shortly enough, she sighs again before filling in some data charts. As she did so, she failed to hear someone's voice calling to her.
"-mi…Asa… Asami."
Grabbing a stack of papers, Asami flips through some paperwork before abruptly jumping at someone's touch. She twitches before turning around. "H-Hide nii? What's up?"
"Hey," Hideyuki smiles warmly before setting down a box of refreshments. "I got you some snacks, you should get some rest and eat something."
The crease in her eyebrows never left as Asami couldn't help but pout. "But… there's so much to do. We have to fix dad's mistakes. We have to."
"I know… but, you've been through a lot." He sighs before taking a seat on the table right next to her. "Ignoring his triad ties, I never thought that dad would…" he eyes his little sister feeling guilty. "Sorry. It's my fault. I should've been more attentive and gotten you a bodyguard or something."
She gives him a warm smile. "Thanks Hide-nii… but also no thanks." She then proceeds to karate chop this thigh. "You know how much I hate formalities. I like my freedom and well…" she goes back to staring at the laptop screen, "in a way… I feel sort of… relieved? I don't have to worry about what might come and honestly…" She then leans back in her car before staring at the ceiling. "I feel… oddly lighter? Free?"
Hideyuki hums as he carefully observes her face. "That so?"
"Yeah… but…" she then turns to look him in the eyes. "I also feel empty." She then places her hand above her head. "I… dad is really gone…"
"..." With a slight frown, Hideyuki steps off the table before pulling his sister into a hug. "You'll be okay. We're here for you."
Asami leans into his body with her eyes closed. "Yeah… but really…" I don't want to talk about this. "Enough about me nii-sama." She then leans back before gesturing at the mess in front of her. "We have to get the company sorted out. Profits have dropped more than fifty percent and at this rate, we might have to lay off our people." She then grabs her forehead in frustration, "That's the last thing I want to do and we can cover everyone's paychecks out of our pockets but at this rate, we won't last."
This time, Hideyuki sighs before leaning back as well. "I know… You're telling me." He quickly pulls out his phone before flashing it to his sister. "My phone's glitching."
Raising a curious eyebrow, Asami leans in to get a closer look. "Wow… I don't think I've ever seen a thousand unread emails before… it's usually a hundred at most…"
"Yeah. They keep coming and I've been swamped. It's mostly publicists and whatnot demanding answers and stuff."
"..."
"..."
They both maintain eye contact before eventually sighing at the same time.
"Good luck to us."
"Good luck to us."
They tiredly bumped each other's fists with prolonging heavy bags under their eyes.
xXx
"Asssaaamiii~!" Ren sings before bargaining into her office. "Yaa! How ya doin? Let's eat something!"
"Ren nii-san…" Asami starts before immediately glaring at the paper and plastic bags in his hands. "The heck is that?"
"What do you mean what?" He then plops down the various bags in his hands. "Lunch obviously."
Asami's expression never changes as she watches Ren take out container after container. "For the whole office… or us?"
"Us obviously, I know you love Kwong's so I got a few of your favorites! And that bakery down the street too. There's plenty to go around so take some back for dinner, I know you've been busy sorting things out with our employees. Not to mention all the suppliers you've been calling…"
Smiling softly, Asami knew what her brother was up to. He was always the one who would bring food for days whenever she was sad, mad, or even sick. So, knowing his persistent habits, she saved her work progress before getting up to walk over to the spread on the table. "Thanks but you do know I have only one stomach right?"
"Yeah…but Kwong's leftovers are always good for a few days."
With a slight shake of the head, Asami lets out a small chuckle. "Okay okay… I hear you loud and clear."
"Very good, now…" he starts opening some containers, "What do you wanna eat first?"
"Hmm…"
The more Asami stared at the food selection, the more she realized that she forgot that she hadn't eaten since last night. Specifically five in the afternoon… she ends up tapping her chin playfully before deciding. "How about a bit of everything?"
"As you wish my princess." Ren says before topping it off with a slight bow as well.
Asami had to hold back her disgust but couldn't and ended up gagging a little. "Ew gross, can you not? Don't call me that."
Ren hums playfully before throwing her a wink. "Sorry I can't help it since my lil sis is too cute!"
Unable to hold back her gag, Asami looks away in disgust this time. "Don't make me kick you out."
"And why on earth would you do that?"
"Because you're annoying."
"Eehhhh, don't say that."
"You're annoying."
"And you're my sweet little sister."
Asami's grossed-out expression never changed. In fact, she grew more and more disgusted by the moment. So… by the time there was a warm plate of food sitting in front of her, she finally realized what he was doing.
"What did you want to say?"
Ren just looks her in the eyes with an innocent shrug. "Say what?"
Asami just rolls her eyes before breaking apart her wooden chopsticks. "Don't play dumb with me. I know you want to say something too, so just say it!" She gruffs before putting a healthy helping of noodles into her mouth. They had this silent stare down until Ren finally cracked.
"Ugh… okay fine fine… I'll say it." He then takes the closest seat next to his sister before starting, "You don't have to do this."
She was still giving him the stink eye while chewing on her food. After she finished chewing, she spoke up. "Do what?"
"This." Ren repeats before fanning out his hand at the table, "Work. Here at Future Industries. You can go back to school if you want to… we'll figure something out so you can choose your future Asami. You don't have to be tied down to here."
Asami scoffs as if that was one of the most ridiculous things she heard. Because it was. "Are you stupid? There is way too much work to leave it just to the three of you. Besides, if I wasn't sorting out all of this data, you would be screwed. Naofumi nii-sama is busy saving our connections, you're trying to save our international affairs and Hide-nii is busy with replying and fixing our reputation here in Republic City. If it weren't for me," she points at herself with her finger, "All of our employees would be without a job and there would be turmoil both external and internal. Now that would be the end of Future industries."
Ren's eyebrow twitches and as much as he watched to retort that, he knew she was right. "Spirits, why are you so smart… What am I supposed to say to that? Here I thought I would be able to convince you to live a normal life but here you are, all grown up and strong…" he sniffles with a proud face. "You are the best thing in my life ever!"
Cringing at that, Asami couldn't take it anymore. She gags once again before bunching up the closest sticky note and throwing it his way. "Stop. Stop being so gross before I throw up what I just ate. More like, get out of my office! You're distracting me!" She quickly grabs another piece of paper and bunches it up before throwing it at him again.
Ren quickly retreats, "And that's my cue to go!" He quickly runs to the door with a grin on his face and just when he exits the door, he pauses at the door frame. "Remember to finish that meal and take the leftovers home!"
He could've left it at that and left. But he didn't.
"My sweet little smart princess!"
Feeling a veil about to burst, Asami's hand immediately snaps down at her desk. She grabs the metal pencil holder filled with a bunch of pens and sharp pencils in it before chucking it his way. Ren's eyes widened and he yelped before ducking behind the door panel. If it weren't for that, Asami's great accuracy would have smacked him on the head.
"I said don't call me that!"
She heard his faint laughing fade and after one deep sigh, she mindlessly stuffs one of her favorite dumplings into her mouth.
"Idiot…"
xXx
The moment Asami sinks her entire body into the hot bathwater, she lets out a satisfied moan. She sighs in bliss again before taking a deep breath and submerging her entire body. She basked in the hot water for as long as she could until she ran out of breath and resubmerged. The bathwater slashes around and after she wipes her face and pushes back her hair, she rests her body weight against the tub.
"Hah…"
With her eyes closed, she wiggles her toes and enjoys the hot water enveloping her body. It was as if weight was finally lifting off her shoulders even if she was still carrying a lot. Headache after headache, she finally sorted out the labor force issues in the company. Now all she had to do was join her brothers in attempts to fix their company's reputation.
"Haahhhhhhh…"
Sighing yet again, she dips her face under the hot water but this time, she quickly re-emerges.
"Great…"
She splashed her face with the toasty water before slouching again. Soon enough, she starts playing around with the bath water. Raising her foot just above the water surface, she glided it back and forth before bringing it down. She watches the ripples ride out and once it was tranquil again, she made a water gun and shot her shot.
"..."
Sure enough, she runs her hand through her hair before voicing out her thoughts.
"I miss Korra…"
She fiddles with the water again.
"I haven't seen her in forever…"
Truth was, she had seen Korra about a week ago since the incident. They had met up briefly for a cup of coffee to check up on each other. Asami ended up apologizing again for not having time to meet up sooner thanks to the whole fiasco with her father amongst other things. Of course… she had been worried about interacting with Korra for obvious reasons but thankfully, her attitude towards her hadn't changed. The most joyful and sweetest memory she had from that day was that even though she had been mostly covered with heavy clothing, Korra still managed to spot her without fuss. That made her heart swell in endearment for some reason.
And, funny enough, Korra had confessed that she had been nervous about meeting up as well. She apologized for hiding her identity and that she didn't mean to keep it a secret. Of course, Asami shrugged it off and said that she understood. Unwanted attention was something that she knew far too well after all. It was bizarre… yet somewhat good? Thankfully they quickly disregarded all the political mumbo jumbo since they both understood each other's situations. Additionally, Korra's injuries were thankfully mostly healed and all that she was left with was soreness. All in all, their exchange was short and sweet with no hard feelings.
Asami lets out another sigh again but this time, it was more of a lovesick and dreamy kind. Aside from the initial awkwardness, the experience had been so cozy and comfortable. She didn't have to worry about the public eye. She didn't have to pretend to be fine or be responsible like she would act in front of her brothers. She was just herself, no acting, no forcing, just her plain old self. That's when Asami finally settled down with her feelings.
"Spirits… I really do like Korra."
With her cheeks turning red, Asami splashes her cheeks with the toasty warmth before flailing around a bit, splashing around the water. Sure enough, she squeals a bit before sighing in her cozy bath.
"Korra… Korra Korra Korra."
She giggles to herself like a lovesick teenager.
"I think I lo—" she thins out her lips at the confession she was about to whisper. "I… I love Korra."
Cupping her face in embarrassment, she squeals before dunking her head beneath the water. After she lets out a muffled scream, she rises back to take a deep breath before sinking her face in just so that her nose is above the surface. Her face was burning as she squirmed around in the tub. Shortly enough, she huffs out bubbles before whispering to herself.
"I really, really love that woman…"
xXx
"Naofumi nii-sama, what's wrong…? You called for me?" Asami cautiously calls out as she enters the CEO's office. Once she's inside she notes her other brothers are seated in the sitting area with him. "Ren-nii, Hide-nii…? You're both here too?" She gasps softly, "Don't tell me, something happened?"
Ren quickly brings his hands up, "Aa! Oh no no no, nothing's wrong! We just got to talk, that's all." Asami's eyes narrow in disbelief before glancing over at Hideyuki. In return, he shrugs slightly with a sheepish smile.
"Okay…" Asami starts again before walking over and taking a seat due to their gestures. "What's happening…?" She tries questioning again since they were all acting suspicious.
Naofumi simply hums before walking over and taking a seat across from Asami. He sits down comfortably before crossing his hands together. "Mmh… the truth is…" he makes eye contact with Asami.
Asami twitches up right at that, bracing herself for whatever's about to come, before giving her other two brothers a sparring glance which they avoid for some reason. That makes Asami gulp in panic before looking back at Naofumi. She felt like a mouse cornered by cats for some reason. "Y-Yes nii-sama?"
He takes a deep breath before sighing somewhat. "I'll be blunt…"
Swallowing yet again, Asami just kept up this nervous smile. "Yes?"
"We've discussed this for a while now…" he then glances at his younger brothers, "along with our employees as well."
Where could this be heading to? "Uhuh…" Asami urges with a subtle nod in affirmation as she slowly was getting fed up with how slow Naofumi was informing her whatever he was about to say.
"With much careful consideration, we have all decided that you are the most capable one to take over this company and lead us to a better future."
"Haa?" Asami's mouth dropped. "What did you just say?" Not believing her ears, she blinks rapidly in a dumbfounded state.
Naofumi simply blinks once before repeating himself calmly. "Your brothers and I think you are the best suited to take over this company after our father. We want you to take over Future Industries as the CEO, of course, we'll still assist you from the sides."
"Haa!?" Asami let out a single laugh. "W-What? M-Me? Take over Future Industries?" She maintains eye contact with Naofumi which he just nods to. Asami ends up blinking a few times before looking at Ren. He just nods with a bright grin before she snaps her head at Hideyuki. She mouths out 'Me? CEO?' which of course, he nods firmly to.
"Hah!" Asami starts laughing nervously this time before spitting out, "What! Me? Take over the company! B-But nii-sama! What about you? Shouldn't you take over the company?!" She exclaims with a flick of her hand.
Naofumi just raises his hand up to calm her down. "Just hear me out… normally, I would have taken over the company but, as much as I would like to, I have my hands tied with Suoh Corps."
Sinking back to her seat, Asami knew that. Her sister-in-law Kaede was the only child of a computer tech company so it would make sense that Naofumi would lead it with her. And, compared to Future Industries, Suoh Corp focused on electronics such as phones, computers, and those alike while Future Industries worked with vehicles ranging from causal, luxurious, and industrial cars alongside planes and trains.
Gesturing his hand outwards, Naofumi continues his explanation.
"Now before you bring up our brothers, let me break it down for you. Ren is great with international affairs," he glances over at his brother before continuing, "but is weaker when it comes to running the company on the inside."
He then looks at his other brother. "Hideyuki, on the other hand, is the opposite, he's great with internal affairs but weaker with external affairs."
He then looks back at his sister. "You, however, are the most well-rounded of us all. You're amazing with both international and local affairs. Furthermore, you're quick at making decisions and have a good sense of priority when it comes to relevance and importance." He paused to let his words sink in.
When Asami gives him this forlorn look, he continues with a proud face. "Father never really looked at you nor your talents…" he states in a sad tone, "But… I have. I have always watched over you carefully since you were little and I know you are the most suitable one for this position. You are more than capable of this, Asami. You're the best fit for this company. Future Industries needs you, not me but you."
Naofumi watches over his sister as he lets it sink in. A few moments passed and when he knew Asami was finally ready, he stood up and walked over to her side. He then raises his hand out for a handshake. "What do you say, Asami? Do you think you can help your foolish brothers save our company?"
Asami just looks up to look him in the eyes. Her lips parted and she wanted to say something but she fell short before looking down at her hand.
"..."
Her frown was evident. Sure, she knew her brothers would always believe in her but that's what families do. It's just… ever since she was little, she had it ingrained in her head that she was limited and could only do so much. It was expected of her to follow this particular path laid out by their father. She'd work some mindless job and then get married someday to possibly create an heir. So… the thought of taking over their family's company and standing at the top as the one who made the decisions? It was a new territory she never dreamed of crossing.
"I… nii-sama I…"
Letting out a soft breath, Naofumi smiled softly before getting down onto his knees. He then grabbed her hands comfortingly with his left before raising his right hand to cup her cheek. After that, he carefully brought up her face so that they were making eye contact before giving her the warmest and most encouraging smile out there.
"I have complete confidence in you Asami. I know you can do it." He then quickly leaned up to kiss her forehead. "You've grown up so well." He started patting her head affectionately, "Mom would be so proud of you for becoming such an amazing, beautiful, and smart woman."
Asami's face faltered at that. Her eyes quickly grew teary and she felt a tight squeeze in her chest. Her lips thinned out in an attempt to hold back her tears before she leaned into her brother's hand. "Y-You think so? Do you think mom would be proud of me? B-Because dad—" she choked with a short sob. "Dad doesn't…" tears began to spill from her eyes and she gritted her teeth before biting her lip. She didn't want to cry in front of her brothers, especially Naofumi. It was embarrassing. She didn't want to be their weak little sister who always needed a helping hand. She could do better. She had to.
Letting out a soft breath, Naofumi stood up to pull her into a tight hug. As Asami started sobbing into his arms, he just patted her back comfortingly. "It's okay to cry Asami… it's okay to lean on someone, at least us." He gave her an adoring look, "We are your brothers after all… we'll always love and support you no matter what. You have been so brave these past years standing against dad. I'm sorry I couldn't help you earlier… it took me such a long time to realize what I should've done. I'm sorry, I should've helped you quicker. If I did, maybe you wouldn't have gotten so hurt."
Asami lets out an ugly hiccup before she wipes away her eyes and nose. "No, it's not your fault nii-sama."
Naofumi shakes his head. "No, it's my fault that dad got out of control. I am a fool… I thought everything would be okay over time but clearly…" he looks off to the side in remorse, "that wasn't the case."
Asami hiccups up again before clutching his shirt. She ends up closing her eyes and leaning into his broad chest before crying again. She sobbed out whatever her body was willing to give. She couldn't explain it in words but she was shaking in pain and fear. It hurt. Her heart ached like no other and it was as if someone was crushing it with their bare hands. However… at the same time, for some reason, it felt as if she was tearing her way through some wall.
It was as if for the first time in her life, she finally stopped to look away from her narrow and boring trail. Instead of following this bland rocky path, it was as if she was about to take a detour down to this grassy field. When she closed her eyes, she could practically taste the crisp air, and instinctively, when she opened her eyes, she was faced with a completely new scenery. One she had never seen before like an open beach on a sunny day with a gentle breeze. Some weight had been lifted from her shoulders. The invisible shackles that had been holding her down were gone and she was free to run into the ocean by her own free will.
Whether Asami admitted it or not, Future Industries had always been her source of comfort. Maybe naturally so since she was groomed to cater to it, but she did truly love the company. She loved her busy work. Their employees were brilliant and fun so there never really was a boring day where she wasn't stimulated. As for the banquets she had to attend… while they may have been mostly a burden, she was able to meet different people from around the world. Learning about news from around the world made her world seem wide in perspective with her limited position.
This life… No matter how much she thought about denying it, it was her life so what would she do without it?
Spirits I'm such an indecisive idiot…
She sniffles again before finally pushing away from her brother's chest. After she wipes away her ugly tears with her sleeves, she looks at Naofumi's face. Her lips were jutted somewhat and her eyes stung. She knew they were gonna be somewhat swollen again but for some reason… She was okay with that. She sniffles again before raising her hand. This time, Naofumi smiles before stepping back and raising his hand.
"Congratulations Asami, it's a pleasure to meet the new CEO of Future Industries."
Asami gives him a soft smile before shaking his hand. "Likewise."
They hold that sweet moment for a hot second before Ren's sniffling breaks the tension. Asami glances over at him before giving him a judging look. She was hoping he wasn't going to start but he did.
"My sweet little princess is so precious!" He sniffles again, "I'm so proud of you! I'm so happy to be your brother!!"
Letting out a peep of disgust, Asami let go of her brother's hand before creeping back into the chair. "Gross. Please don't start." She gives him a stern look with an annoyed pout.
"But—"
She raises her brow at him.
"I—"
Hideyuki immediately snorts before a sudden happy squeal catches their attention.
"Papa! RenRen, Yukki, MiMiiii!"
Asami turns her head at that energetic high pitched voice. She then immediately smiles before responding. "Kii-chan!" She then gets up out of her seat before crouching down with her arms open. "How's my favorite little lady doing?"
She squeals happily before pouncing into Asami's arms. She then quickly kisses Asami's cheek before answering. "Superrrr peachy! What about chu?" She then frowns big time when she notices Asami's puffy eyes. "What's wrong? Why are you cryin?"
"Mmh? Oh me?" Asami lets out a little 'hup' as she bounces up her niece on to her hip. "I'm a little tired but I'm way better now that you're here!" She then obnoxiously kisses her cheek, getting her to giggle, before spinning her around in a circle. "But what are you doing here? Where's your mom?"
Akina continues to giggle with a big grin. She playfully swings her legs in the air around before slumping into her auntie's body. "She was behind me but I ran off when I saw you!"
"Aww," Asami giggles before hugging her niece tightly and kissing her cheek repeatedly again. "You're so sweet but you shouldn't do that! Someone might just kidnap our cute Akina~" she blows into her neck before bouncing her up and seeing her sister-in-law at the door. "Kaede nee-san," she starts with Akina squealing in her arms, "I think you should keep a close eye on Kii-chan or else I might just take her home with me!" She then makes some monster noises before playfully biting at her little face.
"Aahh!" Akina happily yelps, "Mama help me!"
Kaede laughs happily before walking over and grabbing Akina from Asami's arms. "See? That's why you shouldn't let go of my hand."
Akina pouts adorably before crossing her arms. "Buttttt…"
Her mom smiles warmly before kissing her cheek and setting her down. "Behave yourself okay? We don't want to bother your uncles and auntie."
Raising her hand energetically, she had a bright grin. "Oooookay!" After that, she runs past Asami before smacking into Hideyuki's leg.
Hideyuki just smiles before lifting her and kissing her cheek. "How's our little princess doing?"
She grins widely before kissing her uncle's cheek. "Great!"
Ren then comes over with a sly grin before yanking her out from Hideyuki's arms. "Hey there little bugger! Where's my kiss?" He then sticks out his cheek and taps it with his finger.
"RenRennn!!" She then dramatically grabs onto his shoulder before kissing his cheek with a loud 'mwua!' and giggles happily before swinging her legs around excitedly.
Naofumi just smiles before kissing Kaede's cheek. "You came?"
"Yeah." Kaede leans up to kiss him back on the cheek. "I wanted to be one of the first ones to congratulate Asami-chan." She then walks over before pulling Asami into a hug and kissing her cheek. "Congratulations Asami! You deserve this position out of these three idiots the most."
Naofumi's eyebrow twitches at that while Asami just laughs before returning her hug.
"Thank you nee-san." After they parted from the hug, she couldn't help but poke at her though. "Wait, you knew about this and didn't tell me?"
Kaede throws her a wink followed by an air kiss. "Well, it was a surprise."
Asami immediately pouts. "How mean… you traitor."
"Now now," she slaps Asami's butt playfully, "The reason why I'm here in the first place is to drag you all to Kwong's. I made a reservation for all of us at six, so I expect our wonderful guest of honor to go home and pretty yourself up." She then boops her nose, "We'll come and pick you up so hurry on home."
"Eh—eeeh? Seriously?" Asami almost tripped over her own feet as she got pushed towards the door. "All of the sudden?"
"Yes, now hurry along! I've been wanting a family dinner for such a long time but you all are always so busy."
Asami lets out a tired whine. "I got it I got it, at six right?"
"On the dot!"
"Okayyyyyy." Excusing herself first, Asami reluctantly left the office. Of course, she waves her niece goodbye. "See you later Kii-chan!"
Akina quickly pokes her head out from Naofumi's arm.
Asami raised an eyebrow at that. When did she get there?
"Bye bye! See you later MiMi!"
Either way, Asami smiled softly as she waved back. "Later!"
Once Asami was out of sight from her family, she hit the elevator button. As she waited for it to arrive, she felt her heart pounding, beating loudly enough to ring her ears. Naturally, she raises her hand up to hold her chest. She holds in her nerves until the elevator dings open and once she was inside and the door was shut, she rests her head against the cold steel door. She takes a deep breath before breathing out.
"Seriously…?"
Talk about a turn in events.
AN: *cough cough* yes, Asami's niece, Akina, calls Asami "MiMi" :333
