Chapter 3: Misty Island
As everyone got out of the speedboat and looked around, it was clear that Misty Island was indeed foreboding… especially since the sky was turning darker.
Amitie: "Well, we're here… I guess we should explore the island."
Raffina: "That's the first good idea you've made since we came to this world, Amitie. But yeah, let's explore the island. And to that: We should split up and go our separate ways. I'll go this way, where all the big guys are at. Don't worry, I'll take care of them."
Lidelle: "I-I'll go over to where lurkers aren't walking about."
Amitie: "I'll collect the stuff around here and look around for anything else that seems important."
Daxter: "Then I guess that leaves me and Jak to go over there… because I see something that we're supposed to bring back to a sculptor in the village. Let's go, Jak!"
And so, everyone went their separate ways and started doing what they say that they would do. Jak and Daxter went after the sculptor's muse.
Daxter: "There's the muse, Jak; catch it!"
Jak chased the muse, collecting Precursor orbs and taking down a couple of bone lurkers on the way. The bone armor lurkers were more durable than most, requiring two strikes to take out. Quickly though, Jak was blindsided by a lurker hiding in some nearby mud and got hit.
Jak: "Ouch-!"
Jak ran away from that lurker and continued to chase the muse. As he got to another little area, he encountered the first scout fly of the island. He freed it, and kept tailing behind the muse. He collected a few more Precursor orbs, rolled, and then... he got it! Jak held the muse in his hands for a bit before Daxter took it away, threw it to the ground, and stomped repeatedly on Jak's shoulder. Jak immediately gave Daxter a look of annoyance. Jak decided to go over to some chests that were close to him, and broke them to get some green eco that was contained. It wasn't enough to heal him, but at least it was there in the bank for later.
Jak moved on to another area of the island and collected several Precursor orbs. He went to a side path that had a few more orbs, as well as the second scout fly. From there, he went over a crumbling platform and freed the third freed fly. Meanwhile, Raffina was somewhere near Jak, beating up some lurkers… and she noticed a grayed out platform off in the distance, as well as some clusters of blue eco. Seeing this, she realized what she needed to do.
Raffina: "That's it! That platform must be a bit of that Precursor technology! And Samos told us that blue eco powers this stuff up. If I can get to the platform while I'm channeling blue eco… then the platform might activate!"
And so, Raffina took in the first cluster of blue eco and paced to next, getting even more charged up. Then, she took in a third cluster and rolled up to the platform. The blue eco triggered it and The platform began to move back and forth.
Raffina: "I wonder where this takes me…"
Raffina jumped onto the platform when it came back and it took her through the air. Then, it went higher up and she was taken to a small formation. This formation had a power cell just sitting there, and this made Raffina happy.
Raffina: "Ah, good! Another power cell to add to the collection… Ohohohoho!"
Raffina grabbed it and threw her fist up in the air with a powerful attitude. Then, she pocketed it and hopped back on the floating platform. *power cell no. 23* Instead of taking her back to where she was before, the platform instead took her ALL the way to a large Precursor door. A single cluster of blue eco was nearby the door, and for some reason… Raffina felt nervous.
Raffina: "Why do I feel like there's something dangerous behind that door…? … No, I mustn't run now… I'm no coward. I'm going in there, regardless of what's inside!"
Raffina took the cluster of blue eco and charged inside after the door opened automatically. But then… the door closed on Raffina. After that happened, she soon realized that she was trapped.
Raffina: "...?! Crap, the door closed! Come on, stupid door! Open back up!"
As Raffina was pounding on the door, a giant bone armor lurker jumped off from a higher point of the large room and roared. This made Raffina jump and looked back to see the creature that was glaring at her. The lurker in question had a large bone club in one of its hands, it seemed ready to smash Raffina into bits. Suddenly the communicator appeared before Raffina, and Keira's voice came out of it.
Keira: "Raffina, it looks like that one lurker can't be damaged by regular attacks! You'll need to find a way to hit it really hard, but be careful. If you get close to that lurker, you might get crushed from that bone it carries!"
Raffina: "No duh! I can't fight that thing with what I have!"
Keira: "Maybe not right now, but I think I see a button behind it. Go press it and see what it activates!"
Raffina: "*sigh* Alright…"
The communicator went away and Raffina started to go around the giant lurker. The big lug noticed this and attempted to swipe at her with the bone club.
Raffina: "...!"
Raffina reacted and she rolled into the direction that the bone club was coming from. This allowed her to dodge the swing and the lurker missed. And since the lurker didn't expect this: The force it was using the swing the bone around overpowered it and it fell to the ground. This gave Raffina a chance to press on the button that Keira mentioned. She did so, and an eco vent activated. Red eco began to flow out of the vent, and Raffina saw it occur.
Raffina: "I-is that…?"
The communicator appeared again and Keira's voice came out of it.
Keira: "It is, Raffina! That's red eco! Red eco will strengthen your attacks, and it'll probably be enough to take down the lurker."
Raffina: "Say no more… I'll put that lurker in its place!"
Keira: "Don't get carried away, Raffina; you're still in danger. Please, be careful."
The communication disappeared again and Raffina didn't waste in getting over to the red eco vent. As she did, the lurker got back up. When Raffina got to the vent, her body took in a full charge of red eco… and she felt empowered.
Raffina: "This power…! … Heh. Ohohoho… OHOHOHOHO! I feel like I can punch and kick anything into the air! Look out, bone-head: Here I come!"
Raffina rolled around constantly, baiting a bone swing from the lurker. Once the lurker swung its bone, Raffina dodged it and quickly uppercutted its gut. The force of the attack caused the lurker to fall down again and Raffina took this opportunity to kick its head. After she did that, her full charge of red eco ran out. And then, the lurker got back up.
Raffina: "Ugh… Something tells me I have to do that again a couple more times…"
And she was right. Raffina had to go back to the red eco vent and repeat the process twice over. After the third time, the giant lurker finally folded and Raffina came out of that scuffle victorious. Power cell popped out from the giant lurker and landed next to her. Raffina cheered for herself as the communicator appeared.
Raffina: "Yeah! That'll teach you!"
Keira: "Nice going! I didn't think you had that kind of experience with fighting against things."
Raffina: "Heh. Please… it was easy when I knew what to do. I've been in plenty of fights before."
Keira: "Well, I guess you'll be fine on your own from here, Raffina. I'll have the communicator here go and see if the others need any help. Good luck!"
The communicator went away and Raffina picked up the power cell that was dropped by that lurker. She laughed for a bit, then stashed it away. *power cell no. 24* And then she noticed another power cell from the upper level of the large room. She smirked and made her way over to it. Raffina grabbed the power cell and made a power stance before pocketing it. *power cell no. 25* With that, a different door than the one that closed opened up. So, she went down the ramp to go back to the red eco vent… but not before taking a look at the pool of dark eco that was directly below the power cell that just obtained.
Raffina: "Is that… dark eco? It looks disgusting… And I'm betting that it FEELS disgusting, too."
Raffina chose to ignore it from then on and walked over to the red eco, remembering that she had that vial with her. She took it out, opened it, and held it over the flow of red eco until it was full. Then, she quickly closed it back up and placed the vial back in her personage. After doing that, she left the large room altogether and ended up on the other side of the island. Immediately, she was met with two bone armor lurkers. She took them down and collected some Precursor orbs. Raffina then went over to her left and took down a regular lurker.
She came up to a seesaw with a rock on one end, and had the idea to dive down on the side that was up. This action causes her to fly upward and reach a higher rock formation. This rock formation had a couple of lurkers walking about, so Raffina took care of them and collected some more orbs. And then there was the fourth scout fly of the island, but Raffina didn't know that Jak had already freed three others as she rescued this one.
In any case, she continued going through the path she was at before and rolled from a platform and over some mud to reach the other side. Waiting for her were a few more lurkers. She beat them up and noticed that there was a little Precursor thing in the ground. So, she took a nearby cluster of blue eco and stood near that thing. It activated and Raffina saw the Precursor orbs that appeared from doing this. She quickly swiped them and got up another structure to reach a bridge.
Raffina used that bridge to get to this weird ship and dock. Lurkers were posted all over the ship and she had to eliminate them ASAP. She got hurt once from the sheer number of lurkers fighting her.
Raffina: "Ow! Why you-! You don't just hit a young lady like that and expect to get away with it!"
After Raffina took the lurkers out in a rage, she collected all of the orbs, as well as green eco from chests. And then, she saw that there was another scout fly on the ship… So, she freed this fifth scout fly and jumped onto the dock that was connected to the ship. Raffina walked through the dock and took out a lone lurker that was patrolling it. Then, she went down to solid ground and noticed something from the corner of her eye. It was a vehicle with a propeller at the front, and it was parked in some kind of pad. Raffina approached it and the communicator came to her.
Keira: "Raffina, this is the zoomer that I was telling you and the others about. That's what we're gonna use to get past the Fire Canyon when we have the heat shield ready for it. In the meantime, my father says that you need to use it to take down those lurkers that are piloting those balloons above the water."
Raffina: "So, I need to bash into them with the zoomer? Alright, I think I can manage. And don't worry, I'll try not to damage this thing."
Keira: "Thanks, we're counting on you!"
The communicator went away as Raffina hopped on the zoomer.
Raffina: "Okay, so how the heck do I start this thing? … … Ah, there we go! Now we're in business!"
Raffina began driving the zoomer around and saw the first of several lurkers piloting those balloons with mines on them. She went up a ramp and flew right into the lurker. The lurker was immediately taken down as it was forced off from its balloon. The balloon itself began to rise up into the air and it didn't come back down.
Raffina: "Well, that's worked out better than I expected… … Anyway, time for me to get the other lurkers."
She did just that and got most of them, getting a lot of Precursor orbs AND a scout fly in the process. Eventually, she got up the ramp again and went over to the other part of the structure it was from. And then… she flew from the other end, collecting some more orbs, freeing the sixth scout fly, and nabbing another power cell. She held the power cell in her free hand and smirked before pocketing it. *power cell no. 26* After that, Raffina took down one more balloon lurker and saw a power cell suddenly appear from somewhere nearby. She quickly found the power cell and swiped it. Raffina repeated what did after grabbing the previous power cell, then pocketed the most recent one. *power cell no. 27* And then, the communicator came to her and Keira's voice came from it.
Keira: "Good job! You stopped all of the mine-dropping lurkers! They've been threatening the waters around our village for weeks. Bring the zoomer to the pad, so that I can send it back to the village."
Raffina: "Okay. Hey, tell the others that I got those lurkers, alright?"
Keira: "You got it, Raffina!"
The communicator went away and Raffina drove the zoomer back to the pad and parked it. Then, she got off it and began going through the pathway that was past the zoomer, collecting Precursor orbs along the way. And then, Raffina got curious and went back to the ship that she was on earlier. There, she saw something that she didn't notice before.
Raffina: "What? There's an entire path leading up into the air? And what the heck are those wooden things? They're rolling down the path like barrels and crashing into the lowest part… And is that a power cell I see? Seriously, how did I miss all of this the first time around?! I thought I had good vision! Well, in any case, I need to get up there and see what's going on."
Raffina climbed on the ship's upper structure and got up to the start of that supposed path. There, she grabbed the power cell. She laughed for a bit before pocketing it. *power cell no. 28* After doing that, she looked at the barrels hurtling towards the start of the path before deciding to go through it. Raffina knew that it was dangerous, but she carried on, dodging and jumping over any barrels that were coming her way. Some of them were just rolling… others were bouncing up and down. Raffina collected some Precursor orbs that were along the path. She also saw another scout fly up ahead, which was the seventh and last one. Raffina got there, freed the scout fly, and a power cell appeared right next to her.
Raffina: "Great, it looks like the others got the scout flies that I didn't. Less work for me! Come to me, power cell!"
Raffina grabbed it, pushed her curly pink hair with the back of her free hand in an arrogant way, and pocketed the power cell. *power cell no. 29* Then, she finished going through the pathway, taking some more orbs, and got up to the highest point in Misty Island. In this little area, Raffina took out a couple of lurkers… then she saw a cannon that was being manned by another lurker.
Raffina: "That must be the cannon that these lurkers were using to bombard that silo…"
She then approached the cannon… The lurker noticed her standing there and jumped down to where she was, which Raffina proceeded to punch it away. This caused another power cell to emerge from the cannon and land next to Raffina. She immediately took it and held it high in the air before she decided to pocket it for safekeeping. *power cell no. 30* The communicator then appeared in front of her, and Samos' voice came from it.
Samos: "Excellent work, Raffina… I'm impressed. Now that the lurkers can't open that silo, they can't flood the world with dark eco and cause untold destruction. Anyway, I have to berate Jak and Daxter now because they went out of their way to chase some sculptor's muse… Take good care of yourself, Raffina."
And with that, the communicator went away and Raffina laughed.
Raffina: "Ohohohoho! Is that so? Oh well, boys will always be boys… This is why you never send boys to do a young lady's job."
And so… Raffina began to make her way all the way back to where the speedboat was. Meanwhile… Amitie was finishing up with collecting Precursor orbs, and she encountered two lurkers. They both saw her and started to approach her.
Amitie: "Uh-oh, I think I'm in trouble…"
Amitie shuddered and one of the lurkers attacked her. Amitie took some damage and was knocked back a little.
Amitie: "Owie! … Alright, you asked for it! Hiya!"
Amitie slapped the two lurkers and they were defeated. After seeing that she did so, Amitie sighed in relief and grabbed a few more orbs. When she got the last one in a trail, a power cell appeared next to her. As soon as Amitie saw it, her eyes sparkled and grabbed it. She did another one of her silly dances before pocketing the power cell. *power cell no. 31* Amitie then decided to make her way back to the boat and wait for everyone else.
Meanwhile… Lidelle was exploring the part of the island that she went off to and she eventually saw a power cell on a tree branch. When Lidelle got closer to the tree, she noticed that some vines were covering one side of the tree. And then, she remembered what Keira told her back at the beach. Lidelle tested the vines to see if they could hold her wait, and then she scaled them to reach the power cell. She grabbed it, smiled, and her eyes were sparkling as she looked at it. After that, she awkwardly pocketed it. *power cell no. 32* Lidelle soon chose to go back to the boat and wait for the others.
And then… Jak and Daxter were looking around to see if they could find anything. However, they eventually realized that the island was already cleared out.
Daxter: "Geez! Those girls must work fast, Jak! We can't just let them beat us to the punch like this again! Anyway, we should probably head back to the speedboat…"
Jak made his way back to the speedboat, where Amitie and Lidelle were both waiting around. A few minutes later, Raffina came too and the group was back together again.
Daxter: "Alright, so who cleaned this place out the most?"
Raffina: "I can almost guarantee that I was the one that did that. Plus, I ended up on the other side of the island and completed our main objective."
Daxter: "What?! Jaaak, Raffina is kicking our butts at this! I don't wanna be in her shadow!"
Raffina: "Oh, give it a rest, you. I've tired myself out by doing all of that and I need a long break."
Lidelle: "L-let's get back to the village… Keira is waiting for us."
The others nodded and the group rode the speedboat back to Sandover Village. Once they landed on the dock there, Daxter asked the girls something.
Daxter: "So, uh… Can you girls lend us all of the Precursor orbs that you have?"
Raffina: "Why?"
Daxter: "Jak and I need to do some exchanging with a villager here and get a few power cells from it. Also, there's this freaky statue that asked us for Precursor orbs in exchange for the power cells it holds.
Amitie: "Oh, sure! Guys, let's give Jak our orbs."
Raffina: "*sigh* Well, not like there was a reason for us to hold on to these indefinitely… Here, take them."
Raffina was the first to give Jak her orbs. Then Amitie gave hers to him, followed by Lidelle.
Daxter: "Thank yooou! Now me and Jak can finish things up here. Let's go, Jak."
Daxter urged Jak to go and the latter started to get going, leaving the girls by the boat. The duo first visited the Sculptor's hut and placed the muse down on the floor. The sculptor saw his muse staring at him and he was so happy to see it.
Sculptor: "Oh, my muse! You saved her! Aw, you really are the best! Here, take this power cell. I won't need it now that I have my inspiration back!"
Jak took the power cell from the sculptor and Daxter did the robot dance before the former pocketed it. *power cell no. 33* After doing that, the duo left the sculptor's hut and visited Jak's "uncle" to exchange ninety orbs.
Uncle: "Ah, I see you two are back to make the trade. Good, good, jolly good! Eh, you have the uh, Precursor orbs that we agreed on? I hope you put this hard-earned power cell to good use. Cheerio, ta ta, bye bye!"
Jak took the power cell from his "uncle" and pocketed it without delay. *power cell no. 34* And so, Jak and Daxter made their way to that weird statue and presented it with one hundred and twenty Precursor orbs.
Oracle: "You have proven yourself worthy. Here is a power cell."
The statue spat out one of its power cells and Jak took it. The duo did a dance and Jak pocketed the power cell. *power cell no. 35* After that, Jak gave the statue another set one one hundred and twenty orbs.
Oracle: "For your gift, another power cell is yours."
The statue spat out the other power cell and Jak grabbed it, to which he then pocketed. *power cell no. 36* Daxter decided to say something after Jak did that.
Daxter: "We should meet back with the girls and head for the Fire Canyon, Jak."
And so, Jak began to walk back to where the girls were at. When he got there, he and Daxter found out that Raffina was gone.
Daxter: "Hey, where's tall, pink, and curly at?"
Amitie: "You mean Raffina? Um…"
Lidelle: "Raffina said that she wanted to return to the beach and take back two power cells that pelican over there took. She now has some red eco with her to be able to break that boulder blocking the way up to the nest."
Daxter: "Sheesh, that girl doesn't know when to quit! She told us that she wanted to take a break, and she STILL decided to go while we were gone!"
Meanwhile… Raffina was back at the beach and she stood right in front of the boulder that shielded what she called a "stupid" bird. She looked at the boulder for a couple of seconds, then took out the vial that held the red eco from Misty Island.
Raffina: "I'll only get one chance to do this, lest I waste time... … Here I come, you stupid bird! After you and one other bird that I've dealt with multiple times back home: I don't want to deal with birds as a whole ever again!"
Raffina opened the vial and her body automatically took in the red eco. And then…
Raffina: "YYAAAH!"
Raffina kicked the boulder and shattered it to pieces. From there, she jumped to where the pelican was and punched it. The force of the punch was not only enough to knock the pelican off the nest, but it also made all of its feathers come clean off. The defeathered pelican fell onto the sand and Raffina's charge of red eco faded. With that done, Raffina couldn't contain herself; she felt so good about doing that and took both of the stolen power cells. She held them in front of her, as though she was showing them off to someone, and grinned. Then, she laughed loudly and pocketed the power cells, one at a time. *power cell numbers 37 and 38*
Raffina: "*sigh* Sweet revenge… That'll teach you not to bother people, you bird-brain!"
And so… Raffina began to walk back to the others. When she returned, Jak and Daxter were waiting with Amitie, and Lidelle.
Daxter: "There you are! Let's go, we need to get to the Fire Canyon and go through it!"
Raffina: "Don't rush me, flea bag! I just had to do what I needed to do."
Amitie and Lidelle merely looked at Raffina before Jak started making his way toward the Fire Canyon. The others followed behind and they eventually found the cliff that led to the location in question...
Author's Notes: Yeah, like I thought… This chapter ended up being longer than Chapter 2. And as you might have noticed... I added in a new boss fight here: The giant lurker… That DEFINITELY wasn't in the game. I basically replaced a silly little mook rush with it because I thought it would've been more interesting. Also, the actual game only has two regular bosses: The plant in that Precursor Temple from the Forbidden Jungle… and another boss that we have yet to see here. In my opinion, if you're going to have bosses in your game… then commit the idea of having a decent collection of bosses. The total number of bosses doesn't have to be high, but it needs to be enough to break things up from the usual platforming and collecting. And so, I added the giant lurker fight for those very reasons.
Aside from that difference, we got to see Raffina perform a couple of her special abilities in action: The dodge-rolling, as well as breaking that one boulder with the power of red eco. These are traits unique to her for this adventure, and they'll be a big help. We also got to see Raffina using the zoomer for the first time. And don't worry, this won't be the last time, either… As for everything else that changed: It was mostly minor things, since Raffina was doing a majority of the stuff around Misty Island, rather than how Jak would do everything in the game. Now, I'm sure that many of you guys are upset that Lidelle, and especially Amitie, haven't done much so far. Well… If you want them to actually start exploring locations on their own, then stick around for the next few chapters or so.
Amitie and Lidelle will each be assigned one of the next locations in the story. And I plan on having Lidelle go to my favorite location from the original game. I won't say what the location is here, but when you do guys see her go there from the next village… you'll know which one it will be. And speaking of you guys… You're all probably wondering where the heck Klug is at, since he was warped to Jak's world with the three Puyo Puyo girls. Well, I don't want to spoil it for you guys… but I will say this: Our heroes WILL find him at some point. Until then, feel free to speculate about his whereabouts. And… I think it's time for the usual chapter summary.
The group went to Misty Island to stop the lurkers from bombarding the Precursor silo any further. They swept the island of all its Precursor orbs (200 of them), scout flies (7 of them), and power cells (10 of them). Raffina ended up doing most of the work, while the others each did one thing on their own. Once the group met back up at the speedboat after Raffina stopped the lurkers, they all left the island and returned to Sandover Village. Daxter wanted the girls to give Jak their Precursor orbs, so that they could exchange three separate amounts of them with Jak's "uncle", and the Oracle to obtain three power cells. Meanwhile, Raffina decided to go back to the beach and give that pelican some real pain. She was able to shatter the boulder blocking the way to the nest with the power of red eco.
And then, Raffina gave that pelican one heck of a punch. This allowed her to recover the two power cells that it scooped up and she was satisfied with the end result. In any case, the group met back up again and they made their way to the cliff that leads to the Fire Canyon. And so… What will happen next? Who will drive the zoomer through the Fire Canyon to reach the next village and open up the warp gate that's in its sage's hut for the others? Our heroes have so far collected a total of 38 power cells, 35 scout flies, and 750 Precursor orbs. With that in mind, our characters are about to see the Fire Canyon… and come to know just how hot the area is. Someone is going to have to carefully drive the zoomer all the way to the other side of it in order to open the warp gate that's in the next village. Next chapter, Chapter 4: Fire Canyon and Rock Village.
