The next few weeks of silence turned to a few months; there was not much interaction of the pair throughout Stark Tower. Kaylee tended to stay to herself and played in the lab with Friday and Tony. She found that she enjoyed creating things and the wonders of technology. Slowly, she found herself fixing Tony's armor side by side with him.
Steve and Bucky stayed on the lower floors. Therapy had just started for the ex-Hydra asset and it seemed to help. He would soon have permission to go out into the streets with Steve and others to start something better.
For the first time in a while, Tony and Pepper wanted to host another dinner party with all the Avengers and it was tonight. While looking in the mirror, Kaylee noticed she looked better than the day Steve and Tony found her in that horrendous base shortly after the Ultron disaster. She looked older, the light back in her eyes, healthier hair. Carefree still but matured. She decided to wear the dress Pepper got her only a few days before. A simple red dress with wide straps. It wasn't revealing and reached down to her knees. It was comfortable to be in and fluffy enough to enjoy the swirl of a dance. Flats, no heels.
You'll see him today, her conscious reminded her. She relieved a heavy sigh as she pulled a cover over the mirror. The ability of avoiding someone only ends at the invitation of a party, and how could she refuse after the relationship she's built with Tony? Pepper was off running his company so it was a tad her to get to know her but she did - through the mechanic.
She ventured out of her small apartment and into the elevator. Many scents filled her nose as she regconized a few - Thor, Pepper, Wanda, Tony. So she wasn't the only one already up there.
As the elevator dinged, the doors opened to reveal her friends. Tony and Pepper was facing the elevators from where they sat on the sofa. Thor, Bruce, Vision and Wanda was on either side of them and turned to look when they saw Tony's slow smile when watching Kaylee come out of the elevator.
Kaylee had noticed the smiles from Tony and Pepper and smiled back. "Hi," she said quietly and walked around the back of the other couch to sit next to Natasha and Clint. Everyone else was also a bit dressed up too which made her relax even more.
While she got comfortable, the chatter amongst the boys picked up again and she just watched, smiled and laughed with them.
"When is dinner ready, Stark, I'm starving," Thor finally managed to get out, which made a few chuckle.
"Well big guy, the last of the meat should be done-" there was a ding from a bit down the hall from the kitchen. "Now."
As the party started migrating to the kitchen and dining room, the other ding from the elevator was ignored or unheard over the commotion. Tony and Pepper pulled the last of the meat from the oven onto the table where the other sides awaited. It was a large dinning room to fit everyone and table large enough for the food to serve at least 20 people.
"Finally!" Tony call from the kitchen. "Just in time for food. Go sit."
Kaylee watched the hall doors intensely. Her back was to the outer wall so she could see the majority of everything. Who else was missing? Oh-
Steve turned the corner, his hair slick back and wearing a nice shirt with slacks. The room seemed to explode in surprises in seeing him but she couldn't hear; the ringing in her ears was too loud.
Then he came around. Hair cut short, nice suit without jacket, just the nice shirt and tight vest. He looked bigger and healthier. The smile and the light in his eyes while he greeted everyone.
As he sat, he looked up and noticed her. He saw the health back in her too and the dress. Either the room got quiet or he managed to block it. The look in her eyes was shocking for him, something he hasn't seen in a long time.
Dinner was fine and actually lasted two hours at the table before it was transferred upstairs. The drinking, laughing - it was home for most and secondary home for others. But it felt like home.
"Eh hm," Tony cleared his throat while he stood up. "There was a reason for this party as I have severald good news to share."
Everyone got quiet.
"For one, I want to congratulate Kay on turning 22 with us today."
"It's not by birthday, Tony," Kaylee laughed.
"Too bad, it is now. Secondly, I've spoke to Fury about a few other things and he has accepted a few. Kay, Bucky, your allowed to go outside the Tower as long as you have one other person with you. But you must be back by 8pm."
Kaylee smiled. I can get outside now!
"My last announcement is that we have a huge vacation awaiting us. More details later."
There were plenty of yeses and 'wheres' from everyone. The Avenegers really needed some type of fun and to get away. As Tony sat done, different conversations erupted. Kaylee took this as a get away to go out into the balcony for some freshair.
Bucky had seen her walk off on her own, worry crossing his face.
"Hey," Steve nudged him. "Go get her."
Tossing the last of his whiskey down his throat, the brown headed man gotten up and followed the girl outside.
"I know your there," Kaylee called out as the door closed softly behind Bucky.
He looked up at her as she watched the city below. The dress and her hair waved softly behind her.
"I didn't want you to be alone," he said softly as he got closer to her. He leaned against the railing, a few feet from her. "You look really nice tonight."
Kaylee huffed in annoyance. "Just go away, Alpha," she said. "I'm fine on my own."
"At least step away from the railing. It's so high."
"I'm fine."
"Kaylee-"
The omega looked back at him quickly, glaring at him. "You don't own me, Bucky. I'm fine."
He sighed. "I'm sorry, I just want you to be safe."
She turned away from him to watch the noisy cit again. "Thank you, for the compliment," she said after a few moments.
Bucky nodded and half watched below and her. Then the wind picked up, drifting her scent to him for the first time. It was like roses and steak, how sweet and - homely. He opened his mouth to speak but decided to stay quiet and enjoy being in her presence.
She shifted her body so the right side of her was leaning against the rail. "Why did you follow me, Buck?"
His heart skipped and he froze. "I didn't want you to be alone."
"What if it was I wanted?"
"Why do you have to argue with every little thing I try to do?"
She looked taken back. "I just asked a simple question."
He swallowed hard and looked away. "I was just trying to be a gentleman."
"This isn't the 40's Buck."
"It's called being classy."
She couldn't help but smirk.
There was a long silence once again. He was curious about her endeavors. Four months apart without a single word. What has she been doing?
"Would you like to dance?" he asked.
She looked taken back. "A dance?" she questioned. "I don't know how to dance, Bucky."
"You have the dress and I have the vest," he smiled. "I'll teach you. It's easy."
"You've taught me alot," she blushed. "I think I'm fine."
He held out his metallic hand for her. "Take it," he insisted, his heart dipping with anxiety.
Kaylee rolled her eyes before taking it. The coldness against her skin made her shiver, or was it the nerves? She's thought about him, no doubt. But this wasn't it.
He gently pulled her into him, moving her hand into his shoulder and grabbing her other hand. As he started to sway, he felt the girl in his arms follow him hesitantly. His heart stayed steady as he started to be more familiar with what he was doing since he hasn't danced since the 40's.
She looked up at him. Soon, they gradually stopped. Brown eyes looking at blue. Hearts sinking as they didn't know what to do next.
He didn't realize what he was doing, like he was brain washed again when he pulled Kaylee in more, holding her chin in his hand, and kissed her. He felt her arms drift up and around his neck as she deepend the kiss on her own. He only pulled back when the turned salty.
Her eyes were closed but the tears running down her face were obvious. "Why-why are you crying, Birdy?"
Shaking her head, she stepped back away from him and bolted for the door, for the elevator.
