Chapter 1:

New Beginnings:

If someone wanted to find the definition of lacklustre and boring in the dictionary then all you would need to do is show them a picture of Twinleaf town. With its aged logcabin houses surrounded by small piles of snow that were freshly shovelled off of the roads to the large trees that surround the town like prison walls. Twinleaf seemed like the ideal place for a rich pensioner.

Not a 16 year old boy. Lucas ran his hand through a head of dark blue hair and stifled a yawn as he headed back from school. Barry had run off the second the bell rang which always annoyed their teachers. Lucas smiled, He must be on something. There's no way a normal dude has that much energy.

Lucas walked past the entire town, which took all of fifteen minutes, smiling and waving at the people who passed by. Everyone greeted Lucas with warmth and kindness, a feeling he tried to return. His mom raised him to respect the people around him.

Even if they bored him to death.

"Hey, kid, remind your mom that poker night's tomorrow," a middle aged woman said before haggling with a store owner over the price of some fish.

"Yeah sure," Lucas responded unenthusiastically. He knew what she was going to say the moment they made eye contact. His eyes were a piercing blue like his father's. Barry once said that Lucas's eyes were so distinct that they glowed in the dark.

On one hand, it made him feel nice when some of the girls in school talked about it but on the other, it made avoiding eye contact damn near impossible. He nodded with false enthusiasm as he made small talk with the townsfolk. Lucas chatted and tried his best to enjoy the same conversations he's had with these people hundreds of times but he couldn't help but notice that his eyelids grew heavier and heavier with each passing minute.

By the time he reached home he threw off his white scarf and dark blue and black jacket onto a chair in his room and collapsed in bed. The walls were adorned with various posters of previous Pokemon Champions. Red and Gary from Kanto, Gold and Lance from Johto, and a few others whose names he couldn't remember. But the crown jewel was the Champion of his homeland.

Cynthia.

Every citizen of the region felt immense pride in knowing that the most powerful trainer in the world was from Sinnoh. No one had ever defeated her since she became Champion.

Even Red only managed to battle her team to a stalemate. Though most people in the region agree that her Garchomp fell unconcious at least a second before his Charizard.

Lucas's mouth stretched into a giant smile. He remembered how the whole town stayed awake to watch the Battle of the century. Red only lost once in his career against Gold. But legend has it that the Kantoan took his revenge against the Johoton in a private match in an undisclosed location.

The atmosphere that day was palpable. With everyone cheering whenever Cynthia defeated one of Red's and a series of deafening boos when the rival Champion did the same.

His smile faded when he remembered that he was a normal kid with a normal life.

Nothing exciting ever happens in this town, he thought before drifting to sleep.

The last thing Lucas expected when he woke up in the morning was hearing the news of a shiny Gyarados causing explosions at lake Verity. Though he didn't hear it from the TV or his mom.

Instead a skinny, blond teenager who talked 200 miles an hour was the one to relay the news.

Lucas rubbed his eyes, trying to wake himself up while Barry kept going on and on about whatever it was that happened. Lucas grabbed his friend by the shoulders and starred him dead in the eye.

"Dude. Slow down. Breath. What happened?" Lucas asked Barry with a hoarse voice. He had just woken up afterall.

"Alright," Barry said before taking a deep breath. "So I ran downstairs to get breakfast. But my mom didn't make any. That's so unlike her so I tried talking to her about it but she was glued to the TV. I wanted to know what happened. And she told me that a giant, red Gyarados was blowing up Lake Verity or something and I ran straight over to tell you."

Lucas stood up immediately. "Was anyone hurt?" he asked.

"I… Don't really know," Barry said. "But we could watch it on TV," he continued enthusiastically.

Before Lucas could say anything Barry leaped towards the remote and turned on the TV. He sat crossed-legged on the ground and twiddling his thumbs.

"Hell of a way to start a Saturday," Lucas said sarcastically as he sat down near Barry.

The two teenagers watched in awe as the masked water type Gym leader, Crasher Wake used his ace Pokemon Floatzel to try and subdue the Gyarados. The weasel Pokemon dashed around the giant serpent like Gyarados using Aqua Jet while occasionally taking pot shots at the larger Pokemon with a series of Ice Beams and Ice Fangs.

What was even more impressive was that Wake was actually on top of the Gyarados' head, holding on to one of it's dorsal spines for dear life. To top that off, with Floatzel's constant barrage of attacks Wake was actually able to pull the beast down with his own strength.

Lucas observed the TV with an unyielding focus even with Barry fanboying at how incredible Crasher Wake was. The gym leader and his Pokemon had perfect synergy. Whenever Wake gave a command Floatzel followed it without question or misinterpretation. Floatzel even redirected any of the Gyarados' attempts to attack Wake without the need of an order.

Barry and Lucas gasped as Wake lost his grip on the dorsal spine and started to plummet to the ground. Floatzel did not waste a second and used Aqua Jet to speed down to his trainer. He grabbed Wake with his powerful paws and inflated life vest like organ on his body, cushioning their fall before they crashed into the water.

The two propelled to shore with Floatzels aid, narrowly avoiding what looked like a dragon pulse. A giant waved form sending the two crashing into the a tree. They shrugged off the hit, though looked slightly bruised.

Before they could make their next move Barry and Lucas yelped in fear as they hear a transformer blow up outside, causing all the lights to go out in the house. Along with the TV.

"Oh come on!" Barry yelled out. "That fight was just getting good."

"Guessing that fight somehow screwed with the electrics in the town. Maybe someone brought over an electric type?" Lucas asked.

The door swung open, nearly chopping off Barry's foot. The teen jumped backwards and threatened to fine whoever it was at the door only to see a woman with shiny blue hair styled into a bob frowning at the two.

"What in God's name is going on? Its a blackout, not the end of the world," the woman said.

"Sorry Johanna," Barry said.

"Sorry mom," Lucas added.

Johanna's face softened. "How're you two holding up?"

Barry straightened his white and orange striped shirt and started rambling. Johanna nodded and made out every five words or so. All she gathered was that the kids were watching the news until the power went out.

Johanna chuckled, seeing Barry's blind panic.

"Things like this happened all the time during the war. We just need to open a few windows and we'll be golden."

She left the room and the two boys stood silently.

"It's so weird how casual she is about the war stuff," Lucas said, putting on his coat.

"Yeah. My mom's the same. Though she freaked out that one time when I asked about…" Barry started to say.

"About what? My dad?" Lucas asked.

Barry looked away. That was a sore subject for Lucas and his mother.

"Let's go downstairs," Lucas said, brushing past Barry.

"That's quite the specimen," Professor Rowan said looking at the shiny Gyarados. His white and bushy moustache hid his upper lip as he spoke which usually amused whoever he was talking to.

But not today.

"Yes. She is. I'm amazed Wake took her down with just his Floatzel," a tall woman said, parting her waist high platinum blonde hair.

"From what I gather Cynthia he also had a hand in that personally," Rowan said while examining the creature as the Rangers entrapped the beast in a series of cables. "Plus, the two did have some help in the end."

Cynthia watched as the Rangers took the large Pokemon away and made sure that the nurses were treating Wake and his Floatzel. The two of them mitigated any damage to the surrounding forests as best they could. If you ignored the handful of small craters in the ground and the occasional fallen tree, it would be hard to tell a battle ever took place. Which was a minor miracle given that the Gyarados was the size of ten story building.

"Professor. Where's Volkner.?" Cynthia asked.

Rowan sighed. "He left the moment his Raichu knocked the Gyarados out. I don't know what's wrong with that young man. He should have stayed to give out an official report."

"We can deal with that later. I want to know how no one noticed a Pokemon this powerful living in a place as docile as Lake Verity."

Cynthia had a point. It took two gym leaders to take this Gyarados down. A Pokemon that powerful in the wild outside of Victory road was incredibly rare. Especially one of that size. It would have taken ever her Garchomp at least a few minutes to defeat with some degree of effort. Which is a feat most Pokemon cannot claim.

"My team's working on it as we speak," Rowan said. He was about to debrief the champion until he saw a man dressed in gray walking towards them.

Cynthia looked at the man with a puzzled expression. Professor Rowan stood in front of the champion and greeted the man.

"Cyrus? It's- its been some time," Rowan said with a hesitant smile, extending his hand.

Cyrus' blank expression did not change as he shook his old friend's hand.

"Some of the officers served under me in the war. That's how I got past the police tape," Cyrus said matter of factly.

He looked at Cynthia with some level of recognition.

"I'm sorry. Have we met before?" Cynthia asked.

"Not exactly. I was there when we defeated the Unovan's on that island," Cyrus said bluntly.

Cynthia flinched when she heard that. "I see," she said softly. "The last day of the war."

"Perhaps it's best if we talk in private. Hope you don't mind Cynthia," Rowan said, placing a hand on her shoulder. He knew how sensitive she was about that period of time.

"Yes. Yes. Of course," she said. The champion let out a deep breath and went back to doing her job. The last thing she wanted to do was relive those memories.

As the two older men walked away, Professor Rowan failed to notice a suitcase he had left behind under a table.

Barry and Lucas decided to take a stroll outside of town the next day. Lake Verity was about a half an hour away from Twinleaf by foot. Well, half an hour for the average teenager. For Barry it would be around ten minutes. If Lucas didn't weigh him down like an anchor.

"Can you please walk faster. I really wanna see that Gyarados. It's red dude. Red!"

"Barry, they took that thing away last night. We'd be lucky to a find few of the things scales."

"Maybe we'd see something if you didn't walk like an old Snorlax."

The two teenagers went back and forth like this until they reached a clearing in the woods that led to the Lake. Usually roaming around like this without a Pokemon spelled trouble but Barry and Lucas were a bit outside the normal weight class for the local wildlife.

"We can handle a few Starly and Bidoof," Barry said earlier that day when Lucas objected to visiting a place that had just been blown to smitherens.

The pair crouched down as they neared the lake. Expecting to see an army of police officers and rangers. But to their shock the place was completely empty.

"Wow. Didn't know they cleared it all up that quickly," Lucas said, standing up straight.

Barry dashed passed and scouted the area. Lucas was sure that his friend's owed his spikey hair to that fact that he runs around like a Jolteon.

Lucas walked around the bank of the lake. He took in a deep breath and could smell the remains of a few cinders from a Dragon Rage that decimated the bark of a tree. The surface of the water was flat and calm. He could hear a few Starly and Staravia chirping in the distance. He stared at the cave that laid in the centre of the Lake and crossed his arms.

"Guess the whole Lake Guardian thing was a myth afterall," he said to no one in particular.

"Woah," Barry said outloud. "Lucas. Get over here. You do not want to miss this."

Lucas walked towards Barry at a steady pace. Knowing him he probably found a weird looking rock.

But when he saw what Barry had in his hand Lucas' jaw dropped.

Barry held in his arms a large, sturdy suitcase. Within which were three Pokeballs securly attached in custom compartments.

Lucas squinted and saw that there were labels next to the balls.

"Turtwig, Piplup and Chimchar? Dude. These are starters. Like really rare ones as well. Where did you find these?"

"Near a broken table. Guess they didn't think it was worth taking," Barry said, oggling the Pokeballs.

"Who do you think owns them?" Lucas asked, taking one of Pokeballs out of their compartments.

Barry did the same with a different ball. "Not sure. Holy shit, Lucas look out!" Barry cried.

Lucas instinctively ducked, seeing a black and grey blur speed towards his head. He looked up and saw that a very angry looking Starly was looking him dead in the eye. The bird Pokemon flew towards him again and hit him straight in the gut, knocking the wind out of the teenager.

"What the- Barry, you seeing this?" Lucas asked. He turned around and saw that another Starly was harassing his friend.

The Starly that was targeting Lucas circled around the boy like he was prey. Lucas gripped on to the Pokeball tightly.

Alright. I can't take that thing out on my own. It's too fast. Let's just hope this thing in the ball is a badass, Lucas thought.

He raised the Pokeball above his head and threw it on the ground, just like they taught him in battle school. The red and white orb popped open and a flashing beam of light escaped it. When the light faded the Pokemon's form started to take shape.

Lucas shielded his eyes from the light and when he lowered his arms he saw that the Pokemon he chose was a small orange monkey with a small fire instead of a tail.

A Chimchar.

The small monkey looked around like it had no idea where it was until he spotted Lucas. An innocent smile formed between it's chubby cheeks and he waved at a completely bewildered Lucas.

The teenager waved back and smacked his forehead.

"Oh I am screwed."

This is the first time in months that I worked on a fanfic. So I am really rusty.

Yep. It's a Platinum fanfic but I'll be taking elements from Diamond and Pearl along with Legends Arceus.

Though I haven't played an actual Pokemon game past Gen VI so my knowledge will be a bit outdated.

Let me know what you all think.

See you soon.
