Chapter 12

The move to New York was in full force. The Grandparents and Dads had pulled through and managed to get Rory and Logan the dream apartment just off Fifth. They managed to get it partially furnished too, but they had spent a weekend shopping for what they wanted based on what had been left behind. Emily had even given Rory free reign over her basement looking for pieces that would fit the modern with traditional twist look that they were going for. Logan had started work at HPG headquarters about two weeks after they moved in, and for the most part he and his father were getting along great, Rory was enjoying her internship at Hayden Enterprises and was surprised how much she loved the work in PR.

It was mid-august when Francine and Emily started to push for a formal engagement party for the couple and Rory was hesitating, not because she didn't want to marry Logan but because she wanted her dream of a Stars Hollow carnival. She just wanted to let loose and enjoy it rather than spend the entire time floating around. Logan could read her like a book and when he came home from work one evening to find her curled up in the plush reading chair in her Library crying he knew he had to do something, so he called Luke and Luke managed to gather the Stars Hollow residents together to make Rory's carnival dreams come true.

Taylor Dosee was a lot of things but stupid was not one of them, mostly. He was a very shrewd businessman, he owned the main market in Stars Hollow and the Soda Shoppe and was Town Selectman, mainly because no one else wanted the job. The one time that Jackson had beat him out he crumbled within two months. When Luke had contacted him about having an engagement carnival for Rory in the town, he for once did not throw every ordinance at the event. Luke was given a nearly unlimited budget for the event by Logan and by extension the Gilmore Grandparents. It became obvious that the town of Stars Hollow was rallying around Rory almost as an apology, but it was most shocking when Mitchum Huntzberger had introduced Clyde Newman from 'Town and Country' Magazine to do a piece on the lead up to the party. The man was staying at the Dragonfly but Lorelai had no idea the reason behind his presence.

Emily and Francine had enjoyed planning the event with Luke. The outdoor venue with the carnival rides screamed Rory and Logan. They had essentially split the event into two, there was going to be an afternoon 'town' event where all the rides and food would be in full carnival force with no dress code, and the evening would be slightly more formal with a sit-down meal catered by Sookie and Luke between them. Shira had attempted to get involved and had failed spectacularly when she had battered heads with the Society juggernauts that were the Gilmore and Hayden Matriarchs. They were not allowing her to have anything to do with the event, not even the guestlist for the evening, they had requested the Huntzberger side from Mitchum and Logan who made sure that his and Rory's college friends were on the list. Paris had been helpful there too, suggesting two girls that Logan had never met but heard a lot about, Madeline and Louise. Apparently, they had gone to High School together and then subsequently spent a Spring Break with her and Rory during their freshman year, they sounded fun so Logan extended an invite. As far as Lorelai was concerned she would not be receiving an invite, but as it was going to be a fairly public event Logan simply hoped that she would have the good sense to not show up.

The day dawned bright and sunny, a perfect end of the summer day, and Rory yet again was bundled into an SUV with the words 'in Omnia Paratus being uttered to her by her fiance and his two best men. Logan had suggested the casual skinny jeans, converse, and light blue shirt that she was wearing so she just settled back in the car as Logan joked with his friends.

'Guys can't I know at least where we are going, I can't believe that Finn was willingly up at 9 am on a Saturday?' Rory had complained after about twenty minutes of driving out of the city, which was essentially a stop-start in traffic.

'Well my dear Love, if you must know it was at the request of our dear mate that we retrieve the two of you so god forsakenly early' Finn replied with a smirk as Colin drove. Rory simply smiled at that and curled up against Logan who again was sat next to her kissing her forehead.

'How long are we talking here?'

'Oh, probably about two maybe two and a half hours tops' Rory smiled as Logan kissed her forehead again.

'Ok, so I'm going to sleep a little more, as it is such an ungodly hour.' She curled into Logan's shoulder more and he listened as her breathing evened out.

'She's gonna love this guys. Thanks for helping.' Logan almost whispered to his two best friends as the drive to Stars Hollow continued.

Several hours later Logan kissed Rory awake as they approached the town square of Stars Hollow and though groggy she took Colin's hand as he helped her down from the SUV. Rory couldn't hear anything about where they were but that was because to properly surprise her the party had been told to be quiet by Luke and Taylor. Logan guided his girl around the car and facing her towards the centre of the square he whispered 'In Omnia Paratus Ace' which made her smile as he took off the blindfold and unveiled the people around the gazebo, with a sign hanging above them with 'To Rory and Logan'. There were bumper cars and funnel cake stands, a Ferris wheel, and popcorn. There was even a coconut shy and to Rory's laughter a coffee stand, that Luke was manning entitled 'Life Elixir'. Rory just spun into Logan and kissed him full on the mouth as the Stars Hollow residents led by Babette and Patty and perpetuated by the loveable rogues of the Brigade wolf-whistled as Logan responded and a photographer snapped photos.

Richard stood with Chris and Mitchum smiling at the display of public affection shown by the youngsters as Mitchum shook his head at his son who had picked up his fiance and spun her in a circle before heading towards the party as the DJ started playing. Later there would be a performance from 'Hep Alien' who was apparently the local band and had rehearsed for years in Rory and Lorelai's garage.

'I can't believe that they managed to pull off surprising her so much. I can't believe that Rory let him drive all the way from New York and didn't ask questions!' Mitchum exclaimed 'she must have thought something was up' Emily and Francine had joined the group by then.

'Mitchum she probably did but have you ever heard about the event that Rory went to for the Life and Death Brigade, she wrote an amazing piece for the paper about it. Also haven't you listened to his proposal story?' Francine questioned as Mitchum shook his head again, she sighed 'you really should listen to your son more, but my point is when those boys show up with Logan and a blindfold Rory essentially knows something big and romantic is going to happen but she may not know exactly what. Your son is amazing to our granddaughter, he's her perfect match as she is his, and he wanted to surprise her with the engagement party of her dreams. Your wife better not ruin it tonight, it's not the typical society engagement party but it should be fun and youthful and about those two there' she indicated the couple who were stepping into the bumper car ring with their friends.

Mitchum nodded at that, he had had several very, very long and tense conversations with Shira 'I have discussed it with her, I don't know what else to say. I know that my Dad has too. I don't know what has happened to my son but over the last few months, it's like a switch has flipped. The way he stood up for himself to us, everything he's done work-wise, I have to say I'm proud of him, and I think that I have You to thank Richard, somehow you have managed to pull the best of my son out of himself.' Richard just nodded as Logan who had wandered over to greet them came over calling them to 'get up and have some fun on the rides' the parents and grandparents decided to just do that enjoying the event, the music, and the atmosphere that was created by the eclectic collection of town folk and occasional multi-millionaire. It was a strange mix that was just so Rory and Logan that nothing could stop the joy on their faces as they greeted people.
