Chapter 13

Shira had made the decision that she would only be attending the evening party of her son's engagement party. She felt that the 'carnival' theme of the event was tacky, but then again she hated that she was cast out of the decision-making process. She would have thought that Emily and Francine would have wanted their granddaughter to have the event somewhere like the Rose Room, somewhere classy and put together. That suggestion had been shot down. She wasn't even allowed to manage the guestlist for the Huntzbergers, despite it having been her 'job' in her marriage for the last 27 years. Her son had made it clear to her that she wasn't welcome, as had her husband. However, she knew that another person would not be welcome, even more so than she would be, Lorelai Gilmore, that Tart's mother who was as against the match between Rory and Logan as she was. So whilst Mitchum and Elias were engaged in the events in the horrible little town's Town Square she headed to the Dragonfly Inn. It was early enough that she hoped the woman she wanted to see would be there.

Lorelai knew something was going on. It had been weeks since she had really spoken to Sookie. She had just been told that there was a major event going on in the town square that Sookie was going to cater too. It was bringing in money so apparently, Lorelai was not allowed to question it. She had attempted to enquire about the event but had been told in no uncertain terms by Patty that she was not going to be involved. It was a town event that she would not be invited to assist with. Michel had been more surly with her than usual too. The result of this was that her dream job of owning her own inn with her two best friends had become a nightmare. She spent hours a day locked in her office working through the figures, making sure that there were no issues that Sookie could find with them.

There had been moments over the last few weeks where Lorelai had considered reaching out to her daughter but then her stubbornness had bled through, in addition to the feeling of self-righteousness that she had in fact done what was best for her daughter by removing her from the influence of her parents. She had sighed when she had ensconced herself behind the check-in desk, the day could be more boring but required when Shira Huntzberger arrived.

She called one of the younger assistants to take over the desk for a while as she ushered Shira into her office behind the front desk and Shira sat down in the chair in front of her desk like she owned the place. The look of disgust on Shira's face was almost comical, as she regarded the cramped and if Lorelai was honest, untidy space.

'Do you know that your daughter's engagement party is tonight? Well, it's really an all-day, dreadful event. It's carnival-themed. To think this is what she thinks is appropriate for the Huntzberger family, but never mind. I've heard stories of how intune you are with your daughter, I will work with you to try to get this engagement, that neither of us want, to end. What do you say?'

Lorelai regarded the woman in front of her, as she nodded her head, and the two women began plotting.

The day had in Rory's opinion been amazing. There were so many friends and Townies that were there, giving congratulations and hugs to her and Logan it was amazing. However, at about four o'clock, she was ushered by her Grandmothers into Miss Patty's where there was a full hair and makeup station set up with stylists to help her and her friends get ready for the more formal evening.

'Grandma, this is amazing but I don't have a dress with me or my jewelry…' Rory asked. 'I guess this is the problem with your Fiance not telling you that you were going to your engagement party. Also, who is on the guest list? Today has been amazing but to think that Logan planned a society-approved event… does he even have a suit?'

Emily saw that her granddaughter was starting to panic. 'Rory. Stop. Honor picked out your dress for tonight and made sure that he had a suit. Logan suggested that I bring you some pieces to choose from, from my collection. You, your bridesmaids, Francine, Honor, and I are getting our hair, makeup, and nails done together, you can relax sweetie. The rides will still be there tonight for those who were not there this afternoon, there is a bar being set up by who was it, Francine? Oh Kirk Something, well his company 'yummy bartenders'. Lane recommended them, Sookie is catering, which is being based out of Luke's, we've got locals hired as servers. Are Francine and I panicking? No, so you shouldn't. Enjoy this sweetheart. It's yours and Logan's night.'

Rory nodded her head 'I hate to ask but does Mom know about this? I mean it was pretty hard to miss the day, and I didn't see her...'

'Rory.' Francine pulled the attention of her granddaughter by grabbing her hands. 'If we see your mother, Emily, Richard, or your father will deal with her. We're hoping she doesn't show up but if anyone has an issue with you this event today they can take it up with us. That is of course if you want us to. This is your day. Now I feel like some pampering so shall we.' Rory nodded, she would let them deal with it. Her job as Emily had stated was to have fun.

She hadn't noticed the slightly beat-up-looking car that had driven into town slowly as if to see what was going on.

A/N So let me know who you think is in the car... Make sure to review. I hope to have a new chapter by this time next week, but I don't know yet. Thanks!
