Part 9.

Lament

No dreams came during sleeping hours. It felt so strange when waking in another room, dreaming about nothing. Her eyes widened in surprise when opening, discovering he still laid beside her despite already being awake. He carefully stroked soft strands of hair pulling her close against him. She didn't say anything for a brief time. They just laid there together rubbing each others backs at almost the same moment.

She blushed when he tilted her head upwards giving affectionate tongue kisses. When finished her eyes drifted towards the wall clock as usual stunned that she slept through both the day and most of the night. It was already three in the morning.

"Won't Haru feel scared when alone? I'm worried about him."

"Don't be. He should start sleeping on his own in order to become more independent. You want him to grow stronger, don't you?"

"Well yes but still, everyone needs someone by their side. Don't you agree?"

"Hah, the logic of a woman."

"What is that sexist remark supposed to mean?"

"The reply means exactly what it's meant to. Humans don't need constant mothering; especially males. It shows weakness and is unnecessary."

"I'm not mothering him, I'm showing that I care. Should you and I not be together all the time? Would that mean I'm mothering you too then?"

"Woman, don't start what you aren't capable of finishing."

"He's only six years old..."

Both were obviously working each other up for all the wrong reasons. She decided to be the more mature one and end their banter.

"Regardless of his age, his mental growth will remain stagnant the more he is doted upon. You, however, wish to become a mother. In order for this to happen one day, it's necessary for us to spend as much time together as possible."

"Okay...I agree with you about that. But he's still a sweet boy. I could tell he was relieved to meet with his mom too."

"Indeed. Now then, you shall remain here with me until I say otherwise. Is that clear?"

"Yes...But I still want to see Haru and my mom. Can't I keep training and studying?"

"Did I permit this?"

"I'm just asking is all...I feel so lazy not doing much. Well, not that this is boring or anything. I'd just rather be kept busy."

"Let's have a study session now then. I'll teach you the basics of what I know while you provide relaxation."

He turned over onto his stomach allowing her to assume the usual position. She did as before noticing oil was kept out on the night stand. She lathered both hands, rubbing each muscle at a soothing, slow pace. He began explaining the concept of physics to her, ranging from broad topics such as that, Philosophy and Theology. She had to pause in order to rub both her own temples almost regretting raising the suggestion. She tried stopping every other minute and massaging temples but started drifting off to sleep herself.

'I already slept and this is still putting me to sleep. Maybe if I could be a little more involved in the explanations, I'd stay awake.'

Right then she completely dozed off, hearing him scoff right before.

"Here, why don't we switch positions? I must be wearing your brain out already, haha."

"Sorry about this. I feel silly for even bringing any of that up."

She laid down in his previous spot, feeling him aggressively rub. She grunted out of discomfort asking him to be much gentler. It felt like a ton of steel pressing against her back.

"Ah! You'll- ow! You'll break me in half!"

He paused, arching a brow.

"Just be gentler please. It feels like you're crushing me."

"I barely pressed at all. Hmm, well then, I'll only caress."

He started doing that along with using something else.

"Oh! What-"

"Don't worry yourself. I'll keep to my word and only enter upon your permission. Let's focus on your comfort now, dear."

"But wait, do you really think that women aren't good at letting things go? Why is that?"

"My dear, you're proving my own point now. I suppose it's due to thousands of years of assuming the more nurturing, submissive role in a partnership. Due to this very reason they tend to knit-pick at every little thing and are often tedious with detail, thus, causing needless argumentative situations.

In general, men are the providers and women, the caretakers. That's simply how it's been throughout history. Are you finished with your inquiries or shall I lull you to sleep with further explanation and fill that head of yours with scary stories?"

"I knew all of that stuff before but do you not like women much or something? I mean, in that way?"

"Damn it girl, my patience can only be taxed so far."

"I can't stop thinking about the question unless you answer. It won't get out of my head."

He gave a sigh then rolled onto his back, rubbing his eyes.

"No, I don't care for incessant whining or complaints; especially since I have personal problems of my own and have little time to listen. Certain thoughts should remain private instead of constantly being voiced; regardless of personal issues. In general, they tend to be unstable by allowing emotion to override rational thought process and judgement. Shall I explain further or has your curiosity been sated?"

"You've never felt that certain pain before...It would probably drive you crazy too and cause you to act that way. Not all women act like that you know. My sister always over-analyzed things, striving for the best. She was actually the top of her class. I did envy her in that way.

Anyways, I just think it's unfair to think that all women behave and act the same because of their gender. Actually, I haven't complained once since my first day here."

"You are different, my dear. I only made a general summarization."

"Well, don't you feel better when you get something off your chest and voice your thoughts?"

"I suppose, although I always get rid of whatever obstacle prevents me from achieving my goal. There isn't much to say afterwards. There isn't anything to regret or worry oneself over when it comes to self sufficiency."

"Hmm, all right. Well, I'd rather go back to my room if that's all right with you...daddy?"

"Go on then. Although, it would be wise to keep in mind that I am always watching you, Naia."

She put her slip back on then walked to the door, giving a small wave.

"That's okay. I think it helps me feel safer that way."

"Hn, good. Ah, one more thing before you leave, darling. Make certain to be ready before nine this morning. You have a funeral to attend today. Sweet dreams."

He wore that same wicked grin watching as she turned away, expressionless. Hopefully Ruuca would wake up soon. Revenge sounded nice.

...

She tried to be as quiet as possible, tiptoeing against the wooden floor. That same masked man with the long braided hair and purple dragon tattoo passed by her in the hallway. She tried averting her gaze, hurrying along the way.

"Wait a moment, you're Naia, aren't you?"

She turned with her gaze casted to the side, giving a small nod.

"Mh, I've become quite fond of your mother, Noelani. Such a kind, loving, affectionate soul that woman is; not to mention beautiful. I see you take after her in all of these ways."

Just then the memory of Bison teleporting them to what more than likely was either her mom or this man's room came to mind. She still couldn't tell whether that part with Bison was only a dream or still real life. She planned on asking him at a later time.

"Thank you, how thoughtful of you to think so..."

"Mhm, the name is Vega, bella."

He chuckled seductively, gently taking her hand and giving it a small kiss while politely bowing. She heard the lust in his voice, felt it strongly emanating from his aura. Ruucca gave an internal scoff, providing reassurance.

'Soon you will have revenge. It won't result in the loss of these creatures lives for now but I can assure you, without anyone knowing it to be us, you will have it.'

She gave him a small smile, politely responding "It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir."

"Mhh, I hope we will be seeing more of each other very soon, bella. Ah and that means "beauty" in my native language."

"Ah, such a keonimana...That means "gentleman" in mine."

"Mh, sleep well bella."

He let go of her hand, giving another bow before taking his leave. She more than looked forward to Ruucca's plan.

Several moments later she returned to their room, trying to be quiet in order to prevent waking Haru. He was dead asleep and she decided to turn her lamp on, putting it down on the floor beside the bed. She walked to her dresser, relived to find all of her reading and comic books placed in the bottom drawer. She made a small pallet on the floor and read about classic Marvel and DC characters, all of the struggles they faced. Often she felt inspired by spider woman and wonder woman wishing her life could be that way.

'If only things could be that simple. Oh well, I'm not completely alone in my struggle thanks to both you and Haru. I'm grateful for you, Ruucca. Sometimes it might not seem that way but I am.'

'And I you. A good deal of my strength has returned. If you need any help, I won't hesitate to provide my aide.'

'Thanks Ruucca, that helps me feel a lot better.'

She put the books away after reading for so long then found that same pink bible given to her as a small child, reading from the beginning.

'This will too...'

Before fully dozing off she got up to put the book away again, turned off the lamp placing it back in its usual spot then decided to quietly slip in beside Haru, hugging him from behind. He snuggled against her hold, exhaling a soft sigh then smiled. She didn't care what he'd said about too much mothering. She knew what was best for Haru in the long run. Love could only give them more strength.

He woke her up at their usual time before she started her other job. He tapped onto her shoulder speaking softly.

"Hey Naia, you might want to start getting ready. I only have class for one hour today then my mom and I are going with you guys too."

"Ahh, what time is it?"

"It's almost six. I tried not to wake you up."

She groggily rubbed both eyes and stretched.

"Thanks Haru, you're so thoughtful."

He gave a warm smile then looked away, blushing slightly.

"Hey Naia, if I tell you something, do you promise not to make fun of me?"

"Why would I do that Haru? You know you can tell me anything."

"Well, you probably think I'm about six or seven, right?"

He sheepishly sat back down beside her, shuffling a foot against the wooden floor.

"I wasn't certain. I guess I never asked because it didn't matter much."

"Well, just because of my size I mean. That's probably what you thought."

"Yeah, if I had to guess."

"Well, I'm not. I'm actually eight and will be turning nine this month. My birthday's tomorrow."

"Oh, that's great! We'll have a big party for you then!"

"I don't really want anyone to know my age though...They might make fun of me."

"Oh Haru, we all grow in our own time. You'll have a growth spurt during your teenage years, I'm sure of it! I was rather short around you're age too then grew rapidly four or five years later. Don't worry about it!"

"Are you sure? What if I stay this short forever?"

He gave a hopeless look, blush turning scarlet red.

"Haru, you won't. If you eat well, exercise and study plenty then you'll grow up to be a strong, smart man."

"Yeah...I guess so. That way, I can protect you and our mothers."

"That's right! I'll strive to do the same as well!"

They hugged each other before he rushed off, thanking her kindly.

"Thanks a lot Naia. It always seems like you know the right things to say."

She gave him a nod before he parted getting up to use the bathroom. He unexpectedly ran back, asking a rather personal question.

"Hey Naia, I just wondered, where did you go last night?"

"Haru...there are certain things we can't talk about."

His fists tightened at his sides and his expression turned to a scowl.

"Did he hurt you?"

"No...he didn't. I now have to work directly for him. It just means that he and I will be spending more time together. Don't worry, we'll still have plenty of chances to see each other."

"I will get stronger just to get us out of here! We'll be out in no time!"

He then made his way to class at last, leaving her to do what she needed. She kept mulling over their conversation while showering wondering herself how much longer it would take to break free.

'You may as well tell the boy about me. Cat's already out of the bag with those other two males. He's well behaved and won't tell anyone else.'

'I thought I was supposed to keep you as a secret?'

'Yes, that was before I grew accustomed to this new vessel. I've already had my way with the first subject here. My first form will be a miscarriage within you, the second another and then lastly, you shall give birth to me. This will be for the greater good; you must have faith in that.'

'Wait...I have to birth you?'

'Yes but no matter how long it takes, the process must happen. It could take ten years for all I care, so long as it happens.'

'Why though? I just want to know why?'

'There is a great evil on this earth that needs vanquished, cleanesed. And dear, I must apologize during our first meeting. Nearly one thousand years of being alone tends to make a girl cranky.'

'But why me?'

'You have the purest heart I've ever felt. I needed someone strong in that sense. There are a variety of ways one can be strong. It isn't all about physicality. You do have the heart of a warrior but one who is merciful and that is nearly impossible to find.'

'Wow...I guess that I've never realized that before. And yeah, I guess being alone for that long would be sad. Sorry you had to go through that.'

'Believe me when I say that isn't all you'll be sorry about. I still have my mortal life to reveal. I suppose it must wait for the time being.'

'Why not show me now?'

'Right before your uncle's funeral? I may be brash and crude at times but I'm no monster. We will do this on a day when you feel relaxed and at ease. Focus on preparing yourself for what is yet to come. Today will not be a happy one.'

Naia let out a sigh, shutting off the water. She found a formal black dress in her closet given two years ago by her mother in case a day such as this would happen again. She sighed once more, changing into the suede black sleeved dress and put on square open toe low black strapped heels. The shoes looked brand new but she knew the dress wasn't. It felt quite tight but she still barely managed to fit into it. It at least covered half of her thighs and clung to her hips.

'Of course my chest hasn't changed much...Hopefully another growth spurt happens soon. I feel your pain Haru.'

She walked to the cafeteria at seven more than relieved upon seeing the familiar small group from yesterday. She hugged both her mother and Kiriko, telling them she'd be right back after getting her own breakfast.

"I'll come right back..."

"Take your time, sweetheart. We have plenty of it before it's time to go."

She nodded at her mom, showing a vague smile. This all felt too awkward. Thoughts jumbled into her head at the same time causing a slight headache. Ruuca scolded her while she placed a bagel with butter and cream cheese onto her plate, getting a cup of juice from a servant after.

'It won't do any good making yourself sick with worry in this way! You're uncle wouldn't want you to be thinking about what Bison may or may not have done with your mother or if he caused his death! Instead he would want you to clear your mind and focus more on comforting your mother! She needs you!'

'I know but it's so hard to stop thinking this way.'

'Just take deep breaths and think of happier times. You told Haru to do that once before and were told that by your own mother.'

'How did you know she told me that?'

'I've been watching over you longer than you may have thought...'

'Like a guardian angel?'

'Something of the sort, yes. Now eat your breakfast. It's going to get cold otherwise.'

She let out a small chuckle before returning back to the table, responding 'Now you even sound like my mother.'

Ruuca let out a 'hmph' but she could tell it was done as a playful jest.

Just as before they sat and spoke of good times, hoping they returned soon. The lot then stood upon a guard's request for the group to follow him. The young man led them to the parking garage before pulling Naia to the side and informing her that his master wished to have a word with her for a moment.

"Miss Naia, my master wishes to speak with you privately. We will be waiting in the car."

"Oh, okay."

The others got in waiting for her to do what had been asked. She saw him walking through the exit door then striding over the next instant. She fussed with the bottom of her dress, looking downwards.

"I will remind you once more, darling, and it is crucial to obey my commands. You will return to my chambers this evening before the sun sets. I advise against doing anything particularly rash today, dear. I'd rather not have to come fetch you just as before."

She spoke in a low voice, asking a question which could worsen her situation quickly.

"I wish to be with my mother so that we can grieve. Can't you allow at least that for us?"

"I will not repeat myself further, girl."

"Can't you have a heart?"

He huffed before walking away not looking back once. She cried a single tear then hastily wiped it away, joining the others. Haru sat in the middle of the backseat, dozing off already with his head resting against his mother's shoulder. She closed her eyes trying to meditate. Today couldn't be over with sooner.

The ride there was long enough. Many tears were shed as both youths clung to their mothers before and after seeing him. She remained silent even while glancing at him in his coffin, realizing that it was now real, following her weeping mother. She didn't cry. She wouldn't allow herself to break down until alone. She just wanted this to be finished already.

She remained quiet as a priest gave his sermon then told them that the burial would take place nearby. Distant family members and friends somberly followed in their cars. Soon enough the body was buried. The priest said a few more words then gave a closing prayer, thanking all for coming and wished safe travels. He retired himself while she froze for a moment still trying to come to terms with what all happened.

She didn't care how angry her question may make Bison. She was going to directly ask when ready.

...

When all arrived back the time was nearly noon. Haru went back to his classes and their mothers preferred to take a nap. They assured them that they could see each other again by tomorrow. Noelani comforted Naia, saying that Ivan would want them to be happy in life.

"I know mom. It just seems so unreal to me even still. You're right though, we'll get through this together."

The moment she returned to her room it felt strange. She didn't cry but instead practiced the basic moves that Sagat had taught them from before. She'd do this in secret if possible until someone could continue instruction.

'It certainly is a better choice than just laying around, moping. I'll teach you what real fighting is once I have a body of my own.'

She couldn't believe it had been two hours since starting. The last thing she wanted to do was sleep and so she decided to change into informal clothing, exploring the compound. A young female servant spotted her and asked if she'd like to join her in the garden sector.

"Miss, would you care to accompany me to the garden? I think you might like it there."

"Sure, that sounds great actually."

She followed the young dark-skinned woman transfixed by her beauty at first. She wore a sun colored long dress that criss-crossed across the chest and connected at the back. Her onyx hair was wrapped up in a high bun with loose curls covering her forehead. Her light caramel eyes comforted Naia. Odd how she didn't even know this woman and still felt consoled by her mere presence.

"Strange how a garden can be underground."

"Yes, we use solar energy from above and it is transferred down here by reflecting panels."

"Amazing..."

She gazed around the atrium, astonished by the various plant species and gorgeous fountain in its center. A female statue wearing roman style clothing held a pitcher of water in the fountains center catching Naia's attention in particular.

"I bet the fountain took the longest for whomever to build it."

"Actually, it did. Workers were hired to come directly here and construct the object themselves. After five tries, the finished product was at last accepted by our leader."

"Interesting..."

"My name is Chriki. It means blessing in Swahili. What is your name?"

"Naia. It means something a little less interesting in Hawaiian- dolphin. I heard that in Greek, it means water nymph. Strange how even different names can have different meanings in each country. Anyways, I'm pleased to meet you, Chriki."

Chriki smiled kindly at her while picking up a watering can, extending one towards her.

"Would you like to help me water the flowers, Naia?"

"Yes, I think it will help take my mind off of things."

"Mhm, after all, idle hands are the devil's workshop."

She followed closely nearby, watering patches that her new friend purposefully skipped over. When finished she directed Naia to the shed.

"Most of these plants need new potting soil added at least twice a week. This helps them to flourish and makes their color even brighter. Would you care to learn which ones do and help me?"

She nodded, carrying out her instructions. It felt great to learn about a subject Naia also enjoyed, feeling the petals and leaves of each unique plant. Apparently some of these plants required a certain temperature, climate and even soil in order to survive. In separate closed off parts of the atrium it did feel more humid. Naia remained in fascination as the time gradually slipped away.

"Hey Chriki, this is fascinating me but I have to return back before a certain time."

"Oh, why, we're almost finished. It's not even six in the evening yet."

"Has the sun set though?"

"I'm sure it will within the hour but there is still time."

"Okay..."

She was led back to the front entrance, relieved that she didn't choose to wear white. A strapless polyester black dress paired with sandals didn't even show any dirt. Still, doing this made her want to take a shower.

"Thank you very much for helping me. I hope we can meet again soon, Naia."

"Me too, Chriki. I'll help you again tomorrow if it's possible."

"Sounds good. I'll be here."

She hurried back and showered, noticing how the time was nearly seven when she finished. Even if the sun had set by now she didn't want to be around him. He needed to give her space and was the last person she wanted to see.

Haru was already laying down on his own bed, reading a children's book. He looked her way as she fiddled with her night slip, wondering if it was really best not to go.

"What's wrong Naia? You look worried."

"Oh, it's nothing Haru. I'll settle in for the night with you."

"Oh come on. I know it has to be something."

"Well, someone wanted to meet with me but I don't feel like it now. I'm more tired than anything and prefer to sleep soon."

"Oh, I bet I can guess who."

That same disgruntled look reappeared as he placed the book down, crossing both arms.

"Yeah and you'd most likely be right. I'm not worried about it though. He should be understanding...Hopefully."

"Well if he isn't then that's his problem. Could I sleep with you this time?"

"Sure buddy."

He turned out the lamp, burrowing under the covers. She patted his back while giving a genuine giggle as he started tickling, knowing that would cheer her up.

"Okay, okay that's it! I can't take it anymore!"

He awkwardly ended up in between her legs, feeling a very foreign, unexpected sensation. She felt something harden against her before he even realized what was going on, pushing him away now and feeling more than embarrassed.

"Wait Naia, I didn't mean anything by it. I don't even know what I did."

"Haru, maybe it's better that you sleep in your own bed for tonight."

"But Naia, what did I do?"

"Haru please just do it."

"Not until you tell me."

He sat on the edge of the bed with crossed arms and a stern look, obstinate as ever. She faced away from him shaking her head.

"Haru, you're too young-"

"Why does everyone keep saying that?! I'm already learning on a ninth grade level. I think I'll be able to understand."

"Fine but this has to stay between us. Do you promise?"

"Yeah, sure."

She sighed before providing an answer laying on her back while turning to face him.

"You became excited when tickling me and ended up on top, right?"

"Yeah, so what?"

"So that's when your manhood poked me and it made me uncomfortable."

"Oh, you mean my penis?"

"Yes Haru. That's why you should be sleeping in your own bed. At least for tonight."

"It was just an accident. Nothing happened."

"Fine Haru but if it happens again, we can't sleep together anymore."

She turned off the lamp then felt Haru put his arm around her, giving some space between them.

"Hey Naia?"

"What?"

"It happens a lot when I'm around you. Guess it's just the excitable feeling. I guess you just don't notice but is that a bad thing?"

"Haru, let's go to sleep, all right?"

"Why do you keep avoiding this?"

"No Haru, it's a natural response...You're right about the excitement part. It's okay. Good night, sweetie."

"I love you, Naia."

"I love you too, Haru."

He kissed her shoulder making her softly laugh, patting his little hand. Surely this was only harmless fun. Surely.
