The sun begins to rise. The darkness starts to dissapear as the orange sun rise begins to take over the sky. Animals are beginning to wake, the morning dew is glimmering in the sunrise from ontop of the crops scattered across the farm. Next to the small tin house is the red barn where many of the animals, and other stuff, is kept. right outside the barn David is seen leading a cow out of the barn into the pasture directly beside it.
"It's to early for this crap." David mumbles to himself. " Become a farmer like your father they said, do what he did they said, learn to live with it they said." David continued to mumbled to himself as he continued to lead to cow to the pasture. David was from the Mutton family where they were all either farmers or cooks. David's father taught him everything he knew about farming, everything he would need to know after his father died. His father died a few months before David and Mary got married. So after the wedding Mary moved in and David took over his father's ranch.
"All right girl get in the pasture and get with the rest of the herd." David says to the cow. The cow stands still not moving nor eating, just staring straight ahead like she had seen somthing tha was spooking her. David looks in the same direction as the cow,but notices nothing. "So you wanna do this the hard way eh?" The cow continues to stand still almost refusing to move. David shrugs, puts a stick in the ground to keep the gate opened and begins to remove the haulter. click. "Ah, there we go." David says to himself as he walks to behind to cow. once he gets behind her. smack. David smacks the cow from behind. She becomes frightened from the feeling and runs straight into the pasture without a second thought. "You had to do it the hard way this morning didn't you girl?" David says to himself as he closes the gate. Making sure to wrap the rope around the gate twice, like his father had always taught him to do.
By the time David had finished with the cows, and feeding the chickens, it eas time for him to head inside and grab himself a cup of coffee and read the paper. As he walks past the pen of chickens, pecking on the ground looking for the food David had just thrown into there, he realized that he had not checked the corn field yet. So David moved away from the house to check the corn field quickly. "Corn looks healthy and beutiful like always." David thought to himself as he looked over the giant field of corn he had growing close to the gravel road. thud thud. From a distance David could hear Zeck banging on his equipment. "Probably trying to force something to work the way it's not supposed to." David thought to himself. As David walked towards the house he could still hear Zeck banging on whatever piece of equipment he needed to get working this time. David knew how to fix things, he was no mechanic, but he was smart enough to help. Just like his father had taught him.
cluuuck. cluck. cluck. cluck. David walks past the chicken pens on his way back into the house. Once he reaches the doorway David knocks the dust off of his boots before entering."Just like dad taught me." David moved into the doorway on his right was the kitchen with the oven on and coffee sitting in his spot on the table. The coffee being there made him smile. David glanced to his left where his wife was sitting looking up at the almost dozen of screens they had there. All the screens were about the size of a computer screen, perhapes a few inches wider, and they were all showing the entire property. Not just his property, but the property of everybody's with five miles, any direction, of them. "I assume nothing has happened this morning? Since you didn't radio me." David asks his wife as he bends down to kiss her on her forehead. " Nope. Nothing at all. Hopefully it'll stay that way for a while. You need to rest more You've been up way to long." Mary, his wife, had always been worried about David's health. Ever since the death of his father he refuses to stay in bed. Mary believs that David is trying to keep the farm running since it's now just him running it himself." I'm alright sweetie. I get enough sleep and then I go out to tend the cows before moving them into the next pasture."David said to her, while still bent beside her."But anyways. you're sure nothing has happened?" "Yes David, I'm sure nothing had happened. I can see every piece of fence here if even a strand is about to snap I'll know about it immediately and, like always, let you know about it." David shakes his head agreeing with her statement."Anyways breakfast is ready. And I am forcing you to eat today." Mary smiled as she told him she would force him to eat. Knowing that he could not get out of it. David got up and made his way to his spot in the kitchen.
As they sat down to begin eating they both looked up at eachother, from opposite ends of the table, and smiled at oneanother. Then they began to eat. Sausage, bacon, eggs, toast, and coffee. David ate as fast as he could, he knew he needed to get back outside. Since the cow had stood there with a blank stare David knew something was going to happen today. "David? David?" David looked up from his food to see his wife was looking at him. She looked worried, almost like she had just watched him die right infront of her. "David are you okay? You seem out of it this morning. Did something happen with the cattle?" David looked up from his plate, which he had already eaten almost all of, and told her about how the cow seemed mesmerized and how he felt that could be a bad sign for the day. "It's all in your head." Mary told him while sipping on her coffee. "You know how cows are. Sometimes they just stand there. They arnt the smartest animals you know." They both chuckled. For a moment David felt relieved."I know it's just a cow it can't sense the end ot the world or anything, it's just we havnt had an attack since my father passed. That's been almost a month ago. We use to have them almost once every week." David stopped he knew what he wanted to say, he just didn't know if he could gather the courage to say it."I know David, but like I said these cameras are working perfect the everybody keeps there robots in top condition. So there is nothing to worry about, we have allies,no, friends that will come help whenever he may need it. Just like we would do the same for them." Mary stopped. David smiled as he finished the last piece of his bacon."Yea, I know we have good friends, but do they have to give us such crappy gifts" David gestured towards the window where a few rows of corn had been growing. In the middle of the corn crops you could see the ugliest scarecrow. Being held up be concrete looked like the entire thing was made with concrete and random junk wood he had lying around. "That was a gift from Don, you might think it's ugly but he made it for you. If you want to get rid of it so bad just pull your robot out and yank it up." Mary said while smiling. David smiled back."I tried that, the damn thing must be solid concrete. I can't get it to move so much as an inch out of the ground."
David moved towards the window with his coffee in his right hand. "Just keep a smile on your face and keep your robot toghter." Mary said. David turned away from the window and looked towards Mary. "You know I will." As David finished his coffee, he put the cup into the sink walked towards the door and said."Radio me if anythin comes up." And before Mary could open her mouth he was out the door ready to get the day started
As the sun hid behind the clouds, David let out a small sigh. "Finally." He thought to himself. "Maby with the sun almost ready down it'll finally start to cool off." David looked down from his seat and noticed the time. five-forty. David hadn't realized he had been working on his robot for so long. "Well I geuss it makes sense had to put more corn in the fuel, make sure every bolt was still screwed down, make sure she was stocked with ammunition, and give him the weekly bath." David hoped out of the giant robot he had been working on. Standing at ten feet tall weighting who knows how much and painted dark. David knew how to work every part of Marvin, Marvin was the name of his father when he died David decided to dedicate his father's name to the robot. he knew how to fuel the corn into the bucket he also knew how to check the bolts and reload the guns. "Maby I should take it for a test drive. Just... Just to make sure he's in good shape." David decided that was a good idea and hopped into Marvin. He turned systems on and, like always, Marvin powered on almost immediately. David pulled Marvin out of the shed and began riding down the fence line, past the corn fields towards where the cattle were put for the day. Once Dacid had gotten to the cattle pasture he turned towards the west and fired a few shots. He waited for a moment. Then he heard it. David would fire a shot, or two, that way because he had an Abandoned shed half a mile in that direction. So David would use it as target practice in order to check and make sure the gun was firing far enough.
"David... David?. David come in." A voice over Marvin's radio started talking to David. He slipped his mic on. "Yea honey? Is something wrong, is there a break in the fence?" David asked, still concerned like always. "No, still nothing like that. I just sat down and saw that you took the robot for a stroll. Then I heard you fire at something, so I wanted to make sure something didn't get past the cameras." Mary said. With the help of the cameras she is notified about almost anything. If a wire snaps, she knows about it, if someone takes the robot for a test run, she knows about it. The cameras were there to keep everyone safe. When they were first installed everyone signed an agreement saying they agreed to the cameras. "No, nothings out here. I was just checking the fire power on Marvin." David radio back while turning Marvin around and haeding back towards the house. David knew she would ask him about the noise, but he didn't think it would be that quickly. He smiled at the fact she could radio him so quickly "Good means the radios are working fine." He thought to himself as he pulled the giant robot back into the shed.
Turning everything off, so that the robot doesn't run out of power David looked at the clock another time, six-thirty. Once he got everything off David stopped at the front door and dusted his. boots off, then walked forward. As he walked in David looked into the kitchen, which looked as though supper was ready, then turned his head and saw his wife sitting underneath all the screens. "Anything been happening today?" David asked as they were both heading towards the kitchen. "No, same as most days. When everybody isn't working on the robots there using the robots to help with the farm." Mary said as she sat down for supper. "Watse of gas." David said. "Non of them want to do it the old way, they can't do it the same as me where they walk to move cattle and use a tractor to pick the corn." David finished his thought before taking the first bite of the meal his wife had prepared. "Well." Started Mary. "Not everybody was taught the way you were David. plus we have plenty of corn to fuel the tanks, they've never ran dry and they won't anytime soon." This mad David frown. "I know they havnt ran dry, but that doesn't mean they can't. We could run out of corn any day. Mbay a disease could take all the crops out. But anyway we need to save the gas." David said, as he took a sip of water. "I'm not arguing with you. I agree we need to conserve the gas. But sometimes it's just easier to drive the robots there then it is to walk. It's about working smarter and not harder David." David shook is head in agreement. He didn't want to, but he knew he couldn't win this argument.
They spent the rest of supper talking about eachothers days, David explained his process of moving cattle while on horseback, and Mary told him what everybody had been doing most of the day. once supper was done. David went straight to cleaning the dishes while Mary went and got ready for bed. once David finished he went to the bedroom as well. Nine o'clock David quickly got into bed ready for the little sleep he knew he would get tonight.
"David.. Please try and sleep tonight. you really need to." Mary said right before she fell asleep herself. "I'll try Mary I'll try." David rolled over turned the lamp off and fell asleep himself.
Out in the cattle pasture most of the cows were asleep, many were still chewing on grass. One cow decided to walk towards the fence. The closer he got the warmer the cow felt almost like the fence was letting off its own heat source. Before the cow could get close enough to touch the fence a thick black arm shoved its way through the fence. No body could be seen on the other side, but the cow knew that the arm meant that they had found a weak point, all the cows had seen them before. Many cows had died from them before. Once the arm started to pull itself through the fence the cow hurried away. Knowing... Knowing that the demons would soon be back.
Hi guys, so this is the first story I've ever thought about righting. Honestly I had a dram about it then woke up the next morning and decided to try to write about it. I would love for people to read this, because I belive it could become really good, and leave a comment. Every comment helps, if you have any pointers I'd love to hear them. Thanks for reading. I'll try to have chapter 2 done soon.
