Febuwhump Day 5: Alternate Prompt 6: Natural Disaster – Virgil
With massive thanks to Sineater for the help with earthquake locations and the title of this fic and the chapter titles. The titles all come from lyrics from Remember The Name by Fort Minor.
Characters: Virgil
Warnings: Earthquake, Explosion
The call-out was routine. Another natural disaster. Virgil hummed to himself as he sat in Two with Alan and Gordon, listening to John filling them, Scott and Kayo in.
A 5.7 earthquake had hit southern San Francisco Bay, not a huge one on the Richter scale, but bad enough to get International Rescue involved.
And for some inexplicable reason Virgil was in a good mood.
By the time Two had arrived at East Alto Palo Scott and Kayo had already begun organising the local services and allocating areas for search teams. Everyone was to work in pairs, just as iR protocol dictated. For a change Alan was paired with Kayo while Scott and Gordon worked together and Virgil stayed in Two and ferried victims to and from the site to the triage centre.
Collapsed buildings, trapped cars, there were several gas and water pipes that had ruptured, but despite all of that, the rescue was going really smoothly. Of course, with John and EOS directing and warning of aftershocks, that really was no surprise.
Several hours later and they had made major headway in the rescue. Most areas had been evacuated, only a couple of places left to evac.
'Virgil, I need you to drop down here and shut off the gas main off, the local services are having issues.'
'FAB, John. You have control of Two.'
Virgil slipped into his exosuit and rappelled down. There was some way to go before he could get to where John was directing him, and he listened to the chatter of his family. John was directing Alan and Kayo into the same building that Scott and Gordon was in, there were a large number of life signs and since they had finished their sector they were better off helping where there was such a concentration.
He wasn't too far away when John shouted, panic clear to hear.
'Get out! Get out of there, guys!'
Virgil whirled on the spot, already jogging towards the building where his family was.
He didn't get far when the building exploded, the force blowing him backwards.
He knew their luck was too good to hold.
