Day 2: Failed Rescue Attempt. Kayo

Characters: John, Kayo, Penny, Parker

It was a dispirited crew that flew home in Two later that day, John having remotely flown One home.

There were no clues as to where their missing brothers were, or how they had managed to get them out of the building before the collapse, but they clearly had tech on their side. There was no one else in that building, despite the fact that Five had picked up enough to warrant sending in Alan and Kayo.

Grandma had ordered them home so that they could rest, ready to take on a rescue, and they agreed. She'd asked John to come down, but he had refused, he could work better from Five to track down exactly what had happened. Virgil had bound Kayo's ankle, thankfully it was only minorly injured.

It was EOS who found them. A minute before the explosion, when their signals disappeared, there was an area of shielding…that moved. A shielded van. By following the blank spots they managed to track them to a warehouse several miles away.

'Gear up.'

Virgil didn't need telling twice, but John wasn't talking to him and he stopped him before he reached his chute.

'Not you, Virgil. Not yet, anyway. Kayo, Penny and Parker will meet you there.'

'FAB, John.'

'But John…'

'I didn't say you couldn't go, Virgil, but you need to give them a head start. It's not like you can hide Two from approach and we don't want to give away the fact that we know where they are.'

'Bring them home, Kayo.' She nodded at Virgil before disappearing.

He huffed, but John was right. Even though Shadow and FAB1 would be there quite a while before Two, but he needed to give them time to affect a rescue. It didn't stop him taking his chute down to his ship and making sure she was ready.

Kayo thanked Brains for the stealth mode Thunderbird Shadow had, and thanked Scott for agreeing it was needed for her job. She parked a couple of buildings down and met an equally stealthy FAB1.

The warehouse was quiet, and Parker made short work of the security system. There was no one around inside the large empty space, and they silently made their way to the back where the offices were.

They heard the noises before reaching them. Rhythmic thuds and groans, and as they reached the door they could hear Scott shouting. The sound made Kayo's blood freeze.

They crept around the room to make sure that there were no other entrances, thankful that there was only the one, but it would make taking down whoever was inside just that little bit more difficult.

There was no lock on the door, and Kayo carefully and slowly opened it a crack, enough to see three men and Gordon, curled up on the floor. She couldn't see Scott, but she assumed that he was behind the door.

She held up her fingers – three – and Penny and Parker nodded as she pointed to where they were in the room. 'On three' she mouthed and they nodded.

One

Two

Three

Kayo flung the door open and the men froze, giving them time take them out with minimal fuss. She left Penny seeing to Gordon and Parker tying up the men so that she could help Scott.

But when she turned around there was no Scott.

All there was was a TV screen. Scott was sat there, bound to a chair and eyes wide. Behind him was a masked man, hands on her brother's shoulders.

Kayo winced as the man squeezed and it became obvious that Scott's shoulder was damaged somehow as he gasped. Her heart filled with pain for her brothers. She took as step towards the screen and the man smiled.

'Well done for rescuing one of them. Unfortunately, you failed to rescue this one. Good luck finding him.'

And the screen went blank.

Just as Two's engines became audible.

She'd failed the rescue.

She'd failed to bring them both back home.

The pain was overwhelming.
