Prompt: Holiday/Night (2021)
"You just had to go and be born on Christmas Eve. Do you know how annoying that is?" Ritsu said to Masamune with a huff.
Masamune snorted and rolled his eyes. "So sorry that my birth is an inconvenience to you." He said before taking a bite of the dinner he had made for the two of them. He and Ritsu had moved in together not too terribly long after Ritsu's official confession. Ritsu had briefly worried that they were moving too fast, but it seemed silly to continue being next door neighbors when they had been in love with one another for so long. Now, the two of them were discussing what they should do for Masamune's birthday.
"It just feels like no matter what we do it won't be enough and your birthday will end up getting combined with Christmas and that's not fair." Ritsu said. Masamune's birthday and the holiday were coming up next week, meaning that there was little time left to plan. It wasn't like Ritsu hadn't tried to discuss it before, but Masamune was barely any help.
Masamune shrugged. "I mean, my birthday hasn't been a big deal to me in a while." He said.
"We have to do something." Ritsu insisted.
"I just want to be with you." Masamune said.
"You're always with me." Ritsu said with a roll of his eyes.
"Okay? And?" Masamune said.
"It should be more special than that."
"Every day is special with you."
Ritsu scoffed and rolled his eyes again, gently kicking Masamune under the table, not in any real effort to do damage. Still, he couldn't hide the way his face burst into red.
"That's cheesy. I expect better from a shoujo expert." Ritsu said.
Masamune smiled in amusement, turning the half-assed kick from Ritsu into a game of footsie, making Ritsu pull his legs away in retreat.
"Cheesy or not, I'm serious. We can just stay in, maybe get a cake if we're feeling crazy, watch a few Christmas movies."
"You don't like Christmas movies."
"But you do. And I don't dislike them, I just think they're stupid."
"And the difference is...?"
"Well, you think shoujo manga is stupid." Masamune pointed out.
"I do not!" Ritsu denied instinctively.
"Come on, we both know you do. But it's fine cause you can still like it even if you think it's stupid. Not everything has to be the peak of art to be enjoyed." Masamune said.
"I guess so..." Ritsu conceded. "And you said cake? You don't really like sweets either." Ritsu pointed out. It didn't sound like anything involved in this little celebration was for Masamune.
Masamune shrugged. "I mean, what else do you eat to celebrate your birthday?" He asked.
"You can eat anything. But it should at least be something you'll be excited to eat." Ritsu said.
Masamune thought it over, playing with the food currently on his plate. "I don't know, I don't want to do anything complicated." He said. "We could just get takeout. Everyone wins that way. I don't have to cook on my birthday and I also don't have to treat whatever burns you give yourself in an attempt to make dinner."
"It was one time..." Ritsu huffed under his breath.
"Better safe than sorry, right?" Masamune smirked. "But seriously, I just want to sleep in till noon and then spend the rest of the day with you." He said.
"You really are getting old, aren't you? No bar hopping? No wild partying?" Ritsu teased.
Masamune snorted and rolled his eyes. "That's for your sake. I can still drink you under the table." He said. "And before you tell me to prove it, I'd rather not drag home a drunk-Ritsu on my birthday. Doesn't sound super fun."
Ritsu huffed. "You don't want to at least have some friends over or something?"
"I don't know if you noticed due to our total lack of company at all times, but we don't have a lot of friends." Masamune chuckled. "Our only friends are our exes."
"Anchan is not my ex." Ritsu said and Masamune just shrugged. "But, fine." Ritsu conceded. "If you really just want to hang out with me all day, then I can do that."
"And you have to let me be more insufferable than usual without complaint as my birthday present." Masamune added.
"Exactly how insufferable?" Ritsu asked.
"Like, you'll probably want to break up with me for being too clingy levels of insufferable." Masamune said, straight faced and completely serious in tone, but Ritsu could recognize the mirth behind his eyes.
"You mean you can get even clingier?" Ritsu asked, feigning disbelief and annoyance.
"Oh, yeah, definitely." Masamune answered without missing a beat.
Ritsu couldn't help but to let a laugh escape him. "Alright, I guess it's the least I can do for you on your birthday." He said, unable to stop himself from smiling.
"Exactly." Masamune said, Ritsu's smile making his heart feel like it was lighting up.
Masamune was going to have a good birthday, he was sure of it.
Masamune woke up at six in the morning on December 24th. Not by choice, nor by alarm, rather it was because it was-unfortunately-the routine his body had become accustomed to. Normally he'd be annoyed, but it gave him the chance to look at Ritsu as he still slept.
Ritsu's hair was a total mess and he was drooling a little, his face squished against a pillow. It certainly wasn't a pretty sight, but Masamune still smiled affectionately, gently carding his fingers through Ritsu's hair in an attempt to fix it just a little bit. Masamune then caressed downward, his finger tips brushing against Ritsu's neck, making Ritsu stir at the tickling sensation.
"Go back t'sleep." Ritsu slurred out, not even opening his eyes as he turned over so that his back was to Masamune.
Masamune scooted closer, wrapping an arm around Ritsu's waist and pulling him against his chest. "You're not even gonna say happy birthday?" He asked, pressing a kiss to the back of Ritsu's head.
"Later." Ritsu said. "Sh."
Masamune chuckled, but settled comfortably into bed once more as he kept Ritsu close.
Masamune slept for a few more hours before he woke up again, this time to Ritsu shifting beside him and trying to sneakily escape Masamune's arms.
Masamune's instinct was to frown and hold on to him tighter, which made Ritsu freeze.
"You awake?" Ritsu whispered.
"Mhm. G'morning."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up." Ritsu said, turning in his spot to face Masamune.
Instead of responding, Masamune leaned in to kiss him, but it was short lived as Ritsu pulled away and put a hand between them.
"I haven't even brushed my teeth yet." Ritsu protested.
"But it's my birthdaaaay." Masamune complained.
"You want to kiss me with morning breath for your birthday?"
"I want to kiss you under any and all circumstances and not just on my birthday, but now you have to let me because it's my birthday." Masamune said.
Ritsu rolled his eyes. "Let the insufferableness begin." He said before pecking Masamune's lips. "Happy birthday."
Masamune smiled. "Thank you."
Well, Masamune had been honest when he said he was going to be even clingier. He hardly let Ritsu get further than arms length from him throughout the day, this clinginess following him well into the evening.
"Masamune."
"Mm?"
"I need to get up to get the food."
The two of them were currently on the couch, trying to decide what movie to watch to start the Christmas movie marathon when there was a knock on the door. Ritsu assumed it was the take out they had ordered earlier and someone needed to answer it.
However, Masamune was currently laying down with his head on Ritsu's lap and did not appear like he would be moving anytime soon.
"Mmmmmmmm, no." Masamune said.
"You're so annoying." Ritsu flicked his forehead before pushing Masamune with all his strength to force him to sit up. Masamune certainly didn't help, basically becoming dead weight.
"Abusing me on my birthday." Masamune accused.
"You're not allowed to have birthdays anymore." Ritsu said, getting up from the couch and moving away from it quickly before Masamune could attempt to grab him.
Ritsu answered the door, thanking the person and taking the food before returning to the living room, still giving Masamune a wide berth so he couldn't be grabbed as he set the food down. He then left the living room once more instead of sitting back down, making Masamune frown.
"Where are you going?" Masamune called out. "I wanna start the movie." He complained.
"You can start it, just stay there!" Ritsu said. Masamune did not bother playing the movie even though he had permission, wanting to wait for Ritsu. There was a little bit of fumbling in the kitchen before Ritsu reappeared, carrying a small cake, big enough for two with a candle on top. Ritsu had wanted to wait till after they ate dinner to get the cake out, but he didn't know if Masamune would let him back up once he sat down.
"When did you get that and where were you hiding it?" Masamune asked, genuinely a little surprised as he hadn't seen the cake in the kitchen earlier.
"I have my ways. It's coffee flavored." Ritsu said as he set the cake down carefully before sitting beside him. "Happy birthday." He said.
Masamune smiled. "Thank you." He said before leaning forward to blow out the candle. He then brought Ritsu into a kiss.
Ritsu tensed instinctively, his face turning pink, but he kissed back as his heart stuttered in his chest. He was the one to break it, of course, hoping to distract Masamune as he exclaimed, "Let's eat!"
The food slowly diminished as the night went on and if Masamune wasn't basically on top of Ritsu during the multiple movies they watched, then Masamune was pulling Ritsu to be on top of him, but Ritsu endured the lack of personal space without complaint because it was Masamune's birthday after all.
Masamune was trying to decide on a fourth movie, his head back in Ritsu's lap while Ritsu yawned and pulled out his phone to check the time.
"Merry Christmas." Ritsu said, showing his screen to Masamune so he could see it was 12:37 in the morning.
"Merry Christmas." Masamune said back with a smile.
"And it's no longer your birthday soooo," Ritsu started to push him off again. "Get the hell off of me."
"You're gonna be mean to me on Christmas?"
"You're impossible." Ritsu said as he started to gather any left overs.
"Wait, don't do all that yet, let's watch one more." Masamune said.
"I'm tired." Ritsu complained. "I'm not gonna want to do it later."
"Then I'll do it." Masamune said. "Sit back down."
Ritsu didn't fight as Masamune reached out to grab his hand and pull him back on to the couch.
"You can't be mad if I fall asleep during the movie." Ritsu said.
"Okay." Masamune agreed.
"And you can't complain about how heavy I am if you have to carry me to bed." Ritsu added.
"Now that's asking too much." Masamune said.
Ritsu elected to ignore that comment, too tired to keep up with the back and forth. Instead he settled into Masamune's side as Masamune wrapped an arm around him and started another movie.
"I hope it snows." Ritsu idly commented as it snowed on screen. They were about twenty minutes into the movie.
"Me too." Masamune replied.
That was the last thing Ritsu remembered before falling asleep on Masamune's shoulder.
Masamune had thought that maybe Ritsu could have lasted a little longer, but alas he was proven wrong. And Ritsu called him old. Ritsu could barely even make it to one in the morning (when he wasn't being fueled by work, that is).
Masamune carefully picked his boyfriend up, somehow not disturbing him out of his sleep and carried him to their room, laying him down and tucking him under the covers. He then returned to the living room, cleaning up and turning off the TV before getting into bed with Ritsu.
Of course it wasn't literally being picked up that woke Ritsu up, rather it was Masamune joining him to sleep.
"Sorry, didn't mean t'fall'sleep." Ritsu slurred, arguably only half awake.
Masamune wrapped an arm around him and pulled him close, kissing his forehead. "It's okay. Good night, Ritsu."
"G'night. Happy birthday. Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas."
