Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar: the Last Airbender.

Aang stepped out of the Airship and started walking towards the palace, tears stinging his eyes. He didn't want to snap at Katara but his emotions were all jumbled up right now. He wanted to be left alone to figure things out.

It seemed like ever since the Ember Island play, he kept messing up over and over again. He didn't want to hurt any of his friends, so making a difficult but a very much needed decision, he decided to leave, atleast for a while, to sort his thoughts out.

The airbender walked inside the palace, careful not to be seen. The last thing he wanted right now was to talk to people. He started looking around for ink and paper. After a few minutes of searching, he finally found some in one of the empty rooms.

He didn't want to keep snapping at his friends. They didn't deserve any of this. It wasn't their fault that he killed the Firelord. It wasn't their fault that he failed to end things right. They shouldn't have to deal with his mess. They've already had enough problems to deal with for a lifetime. Also, he needed some time to himself, to come in terms with what he had done and heal from it. He has to leave and go somewhere. By himself.

Besides, its not like they're going to miss him too much. They've all got homes to go to, they've got their families waiting for them to return home. They'll forget about him eventually and move on with their lives. Maybe its better that way..

The airbender finished writing the letter. Placing it on top of the big wooden table, in the corner of the room. After he was done, he slowly started walking towards the stables where Appa was resting, choking back a sob.

Once he was on Appa's back, The grief that he had been holding back struck him full force and he felt consumed by it. He started sobbing loudly, one hand gripping his chest tight, the other supporting his weight. All the while, the Fire Nation disappeared in the background, as Appa flew higher into the sky.

It's better this way.

oOo

Katara sat at the dining table with her friends. Everyone but Aang, were there eating food that the cooks had prepared for them. They were talking about the war and their final battles. Everyone but Katara. She couldn't stop thinking about her fight with Aang.

She sighed and played absetmindedly with her food, not feeling hungry in the slightest. She couldn't believe she lost her temper like that, Aang was hurt and needed her comfort. But instead of helping him, she started shouting at him. She scoffed bitterly. What am i doing?

When she thought about how broken and hurt Aang had looked a new wave of determination ran through the waterbender. He's hurting, He shouldn't be going through this alone.

"Hey, does anyone know where Aang is?" She jumped in, when their conversation had died down.

Sokka looked up from his food that he was devouring and paused, eyebrows scrunched up in thought.

"No. Actually now that you mention it i don't think i've seen him at all, ever since we arrived here" He finished, shooting a worried glance at the group.

Zuko leaned back in his chair and sighed, running a hand through his messy hair "No one has seen him since then. I asked the servants, a few hours ago if they had seen Aang. I wanted to talk to him about my Father. But they haven't seen him once" He added, looking down at his hands.

Katara's breathing quickened and she fought a rising panic, she looked at Suki and Toph, her eyes pleading for some information.

But to Katara's disappointment they both shook their heads, equal amounts of confusion and worry.

Katara started panicking slightly, she tried to calm her heart. It's fine he probably just went for a walk to clear his head, he'll be back soon. She kept repeating the same words in her head, trying to convince herself.

Just as she had slightly calmed down, a servant approached Zuko, holding a letter in her hands.

"Firelord Zuko, I'm sorry for interrupting, but one of our workers found this letter in one of the rooms. It says on the letter that it is addressed for Firelord Zuko and the gaang?" The servant stated, bowing, and face showing a hint of confusion at the last part.

Katara's head whipped up so fast, she almost got whiplash. Her stomach clenched. She's got a feeling that she wasn't going to like whatever was in that letter.

Holding her breath, she watched as Zuko opened the letter eyebrows furrowed. The firebender's eyes skimmed through the letter. Once he was done, his eyes were wide and his mouth was slightly open in shock.

He glanced at the group, swallowing hard and clearing his throat, before speaking

"Um, guys this is from Aang" He paused before continuing. "He's gone, he left the Fire Nation" He finished, looking down at his lap, and for the first time ever since they met the Firebender, his voice was sounded small, weak and unsure.

There was an eerie silence in the dining room, all of them staring at eachother in shock. Toph was the first one to recover.

"Aang left?" Toph repeated voice breaking slightly, and gripping the arm of the chair.

A cold chill ran down Katara's spine, she stood up and before Zuko could even glance in her direction, the letter he was holding was ripped off of his hands.

Katara read the letter aloud, tears streaming down her face as she read it, making her vision blurry, her hands were shaking so hard, reading it was nearly impossible, when she finished the letter, she felt like she had been hit in the stomach.

She fell to the ground, before anyone could catch her, and started sobbing into her hands, her whole body shaking in anguish, while the rest of the group that were frozen in their seats also shed a tear or two, Sokka's jaw clenched and anger crashed through him as he saw the state Katara was in. The warrior swore that he would never forgive Aang for doing this to his sister. Never.

Hey, everyone Its me Aang.

I'm sorry for not saying this to you guys face to face, but i just couldn't face anyone in my state of mind. I know you guys will probably hate me for this, or not i don't know, i hope not. But what i do know is that i couldn't drag you guys down with me.

I want you guys to go back to your families and enjoy the peace that we brought to this world together. The truth is, if i had stayed, you would've had to deal with my problems, and my mistakes, instead of having fun and celebrating, that's not fair to any of you.

Sokka, remember when right after i had finished my fight with Ozai, you asked me if i was okay? I answered that yes i was fine. I lied, the truth is that i'm most certainly not fine, far from it. But i will be in due time, however for now, this is something that i have to deal with on my own.

I'll be back as soon as i've got my emotions under control.

Ending the war wouldn't have been possible without your help, i want all of you to give yourself as much credit as you give me. Or atleast 15% of it, heh- sorry i know, terrible timing for a joke, i would've erased it if i could.

Anyways, i promise you guys, i'll be back at some point. I won't be gone forever. But untill then i want you guys to celebrate the end of the war together, and be happy. You deserve it.

I love you guys

-Aang
