Jesse & Olivia centered fic. Random one shot that I've been thinking about for a while and wanted to write. I just needed to get this off of my chest, honestly. Olivia and Amanda have been married for the last couple of years and Noah and Jesse are teens.

Olivia wasn't sure what she had done wrong but she knew she had done something. The past few months she felt a lot of distance between her daughter and herself. The moment that really sealed the deal for her is when Jesse introduced her to one of her friends that she had over.

"Hey, honey. Hi, I'm Olivia." Olivia, who had just gotten home, said while greeting her daughter and introducing herself to her daughter's friend who was sitting on the couch in their living room. "Mama should be home in a few minutes and Noah won't be home until later but I'm going to start dinner. Your friend is welcome to stay."

"Melissa, this is my step mom, Olivia." Jesse said.

Olivia felt her heart constrict at that statement. Even though that's technically who she was, Jesse had never called her that. It was always just mom. Of course, not counting when she was Aunt Liv before she and Amanda became a couple.

"It's nice to meet you. Thanks for the offer but I should be getting home now actually." Melissa said as she began to gather her stuff.

"Okay." Olivia said. "Honey, do you need a ride home?"

"No, it's only a five minute walk from here but thanks anyways." Melissa said, walking out of the house, closing the front door behind her.

"I'm going to go to my room. I'll probably just skip dinner. I'm not really hungry." Jesse said, gathering up her stuff as quickly as she could. Olivia could see that she didn't want to be left alone with her.

"Okay, sweetie." Olivia whispered, watching her daughter walk away.

Olivia couldn't even bring herself to head to the kitchen and start cooking. All she wanted to do was follow the fifteen year old and demand she tell her what was wrong but she knew that wouldn't help. She was still lost in thought when her wife got home.

"Hey, babe." Amanda said as she took off her jacket and hung it on the coat rack. Heading over to where her wife was sitting on the couch, she leaned in to give her a quick kiss. She could tell immediately that something was wrong. "Are you okay, Liv?"

"I'm fine…I just, uh…" Olivia sighed heavily. "It's silly."

"It's not silly if you're upset. What's wrong?"

"Jesse called me her step mom. She's never done that before. I've always been just her other mom. I don't know why it bothered me so much." Olivia said tearfully.

"Your feelings are valid, my love. Do you want me to go and talk to her?"

"No. I don't want her to think she's in trouble or anything because she's not. I haven't felt that connected to her in a few months honestly. Any time I try to talk to her or spend time with her she kind of just…shuts down. I haven't wanted to push her or upset her."

"She has seemed a little quiet lately at dinner but I haven't thought too much of it. She seems fine when it's just me and her but I guess now I understand where you're coming from. Normally, I would just blame it on her being a teenager but if it's been months like you said, there's probably something bothering her. Why didn't you tell me what was going on with you two?" Amanda asked, gently running her hand through her wife's hair.

"Honestly, it was avoidance. I thought it would pass. I really did. I don't know if I did or said something that upset her but I'm going to go and talk to her. I know you just got home, but would you mind starting dinner?" The older woman asked sheepishly, hoping her wife wouldn't be upset.

"Of course, I don't. Go talk to your daughter." Amanda pressed a quick kiss to her wife's temple.

Olivia stood up from her sitting position on the couch and headed for the stairs. A few moments later, she was knocking on Jesse's door. She opened the door slowly after hearing a quiet "come in" from the young blonde.

"Hey, sweetie. Do you mind if we talk for a few minutes? Just me and you?"

"I'm sure you're going to force me to talk even if I say no, so sure. Come on in." Jesse mumbled.

Olivia entered the room and closed the door, trying not to let Jesse's reaction to her wanting to talk discourage her from wanting to fix whatever was broken between them. Olivia sat gently on the bed next to her daughter.

"Jess, you know how much I love you, right? Did I do something or say something to upset you? Because, honey, if I did I will apologize. Whatever I did, I am willing to fix it. Just tell me what to do." Olivia pleaded with her daughter.

"You didn't do anything, I guess. It's just that Mama adopted Noah but you never adopted me. I've just been thinking for a while that I'm not really your kid, you know? I'm just the kid you got stuck with when you married my mom." Jesse whispered.

"Whoa, Jesse, that is not true. I love you. You're my child, just as much as Noah is. My not adopting you had nothing to do with you. Declan wouldn't sign his rights over. We've told you that."

"Yeah, but did you even fight for me? Or did you guys just give up as soon as he said no?"

Olivia was immediately ashamed because that's exactly what she did. Once, Declan refused to sign over his rights, Amanda and Olivia both just chalked it up to a loss. She was definitely now regretting letting Amanda adopt Noah without her adopting Jesse. It seemed like Jesse was okay with that when she was younger but the Captain was now realizing just how not okay she was.

"You always said that it didn't matter. Being legally adopted didn't matter because you still loved me regardless. If it didn't matter then how come Mama still adopted Noah? How was that fair to me?" Jesse said while standing up from the bed. The teen began pacing back and forth. Olivia could see her visibly become more and more upset.

"It's not. It's not fair to you. I'm so sorry. We shouldn't have let it happen like that. We messed up. I messed up, Jesse. You're my child and I let you down. But you have to know how much I love you. You're my everything, baby girl. You are my world."

"That's my problem, Liv. I used to think you loved me and now I'm not so sure. Can you please just leave me alone?" Jesse said, tears falling down her face.

"I don't want to leave you along when you're this upset." Said Olivia, while she reached out to hug her daughter. Her arms fell to her sides when Jesse stepped back before she could touch her.

"Please. I just want to be left alone." The young blonde said as she sat down on her bed and brought her knees up to her chest.

"Okay, baby." The captain whispered as she left the room.

As the older woman walked downstairs to head back into the kitchen, she couldn't remember a time where she had ever felt like such a bad mother. "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." She thought grimly.

"How'd it go?" Amanda said when she saw her wife walk back into the kitchen.

Olivia couldn't stop the sobs that left her body once she made it into the kitchen. Amanda immediately walked over to her and wife and wrapped her arms around her.

"We went about all of this the wrong way, Amanda. That poor girl doesn't think I love her. I love her so much and she doubts that. You adopting Noah and my not adopting her really did a number on her and we didn't see it. We never thought how it could affect her later on." Olivia said, holding on to her wife while she tried to stop crying. "I'll be okay. Just go check on her, please. She was crying when I left." Olivia whispered as she pulled away.

As she watched Amanda walk away to go and check on Jesse, Olivia felt lost. She just hoped the damage to her and Jesse's relationship wasn't broken beyond repair.

"If you're going to yell at me for hurting her feelings I would appreciate it if you would wait until tomorrow." Jesse, who was curled up in a fetal position on her bed, said sadly when her mother walked into her room.

"Baby, I would never yell at you for your feelings." Amanda replied, a little hurt that her daughter thought she came up here for that. "Do you want to tell me what's going on?" The detective asked as she sat down on the bed, gently running her hands through her daughter's hair.

"It's hard to explain." Jesse mumbled.

"Can you try for me? I can't help you if I don't know what's wrong."

"You can't really help anyways, Mama. Can you just lay down with me please?" Jesse asked tearfully.

Amanda didn't even verbally answer. She just laid down next to her daughter, wrapping her arms around the younger blonde from behind.

"I got you, baby. I love you. Mom and I both love you. When you're ready to talk more, we'll be here." Amanda said gently while pressing kisses to her daughter's head.

Jesse didn't say anything. She just relished the feeling of being in her Mama's arms. The only parent who she knew truly loved her.
