The Light, The Shadow, and The Grey

Disclaimer: All Mario characters belong to Nintendo. Since this is a poem, there will be no author's notes at the end. This is my first poem after all (well, being posted on this site to be more precise since I had made poems before this.). With that said, enjoy!

If you closed your eyes and begin to dream, what do you see?

Clear blue skies? A tropical island? Mouth-watering food? Or even the gorgeous, sparkling sea?

But if you honestly say that you see nothing, then you'd be right.

For you need light to see, sunshine is needed for your sight.

But what if all you see is nothing but darkness?

All those dreams for fun in the sun is clouded in the murkiness.

Where did this darkness come from?

Did it come from you? Me? The locals? The trees?

Because it certainly did not come from the sun.

But alas, despite us all from seeing it, the shadow had come to silence your pleas.

What a sad fate. Trapped within the darkness with no hope to escape or help to come.

The only things that you have with you are your wits, your strength, your skills, your resolve, and your squirting gun.

With faith in your heart and determination in your spirit, you set off to find the light.

Battling the darkness left and right,

cleaning up the mess and helping others like you and me,

but who will be the one to set you free?

Like a child who is lost and confused, you don't know what to do,

and like a mischievous, little shadow, life mocks and laughs at you.

Where's a life when you need one?

Where's a break when you need some fun?

This is supposed to be a fun vacation where the light and the sun smiles at you.

But now look at you. Working hard to clean up the mess and the goo.

The darkness thrives in madness and in sadness. The grief. The anger.

So, is it not time to give up and surrender?

What? No? It's not; you say?

Well, good luck then. Because in this life, there is no such thing as "play".

Go ahead. Keep on working. Because the darkness will keep making it hard for you.

The shadow will be devious and play dirty tricks on you, but you already knew.

You won't be played like the fool. You will get things done and bring back the sun.

The bright light will return, and you will have your fun.

The more you toil, the more you work, you begin to realize how much fun it is to squirt.

Something that you had noticed during your travels is that this machine has all the answers.

It is a weapon for battle, an aid for travel, a cleaning device that can be used to wash the dirt,

and a friend that gives you company amongst a crowd of doubters.

Luckily enough, you find a clue that you can use in your travels,

and that clue will be useful when the mystery of the shadow unravels.

Fortunately, for you, your hunches were correct for the cause of this darkness is...the grey.

But wait! You also carry a little piece of grey yourself! A little machine that is grey, yellow, and blue!

Then what should you do?!

Should you be angry at your friend just because its associate is the one responsible for ruining your day?!

Heavens no! Don't be absurd!

Because the grey can be wonderful! Soothing! Convenient really! It's even used to make curd!

It's not just what we create that gives solutions to everyone.

It's how we use it.

Likewise, it's not just how we make use of the problems before us,

but how we create even more problems because of it is what makes us quit.

There always will be shadows; there always will be light; and there always will be the grey.

But how to use them in the right way one can't say.

All you can do now is bring back the light through the grey.

It won't be easy. But someone must do it for all those who are innocent.

Just like how you are innocent and want to relax and play.

But don't worry. There will be a day for you to play and have a good moment.

Because as we all know, that at the end of all the hard work and at the end of the dark tunnel,

the bright, shining light will return, and all the joy in the world will come into you like a funnel.
