Will their fated partnership end in a capture or a kiss?

Fire Trap

Chat hated getting shot. Even though the suit was bullet proof it still hurt like hell and unless it was a small caliber bullet, they more often than not bruised the heck out of him. Pissed Chats claws extended, grinding into the concrete as he peered up from his prone position to find the idiot that had just shot him.

"That's going to leave a mark." Plagg growled "Two shooters, take the one to the right, Marinette will take the other."

Chat didn't bother to ask how Plagg knew Marinette would take out the other man. She should still be up on the perch where he left her, but something told him that she had probably started moving the moment the cage came down. Talking with the pudgy, now dead man had given her ample time to get into a helpful position and even if she hadn't the suit would protect his back. The one shooter who had hit him was in his sights as he popped up on all fours and Chat simply shot through the gap in the bars barreling towards the shooter that had clipped him. Bullets scored the ground around him but Chat didn't bother dodging. The shooters aim was total crap and Chat slammed into him riding him into the ground. The guys head cracked sharply against the concrete and he went totally limp beneath him the gun clattering off into the darkness. Popping back to his feet and off the man Chat checked the shooter and found him unconscious. Hearing a yelp behind him Chat turned to see the second shooter dangling a few feet from the ground, their arms wrapped in Marinette's chain. Marinette was braced on the shelving units above and Chat wondered how in the hell she had managed to hook him like that. Swiftly Chat moved to the entangled man grinning slightly as he struggled to free himself.

"You killed your own man." Chat hummed gripping the guys shirt and getting right in his face.

"He was snitching!" The man snapped looking furious and terrified at the same time.

Chat raised his clawed hand up and drew a light white line down the man's cheek. "Oh I don't know… I like to think I'm good at getting people to talk…" The man's fury dissolved into total terror as his face drained of color. "So… do you know where Chloe is currently being held?"

"No… no I don't… they had her here one night and took her somewhere else. We are just supposed to be a trap for anyone who gets on the right case!" the man supplied in terror although having Chats claws near his eyes helped with his sudden talkative mood.

"Any particular names of those meant to be caught in this trap?"

"A-A detective chick! The scary one that roams with the Whisperers at her back…"

Chat growled making the man shudder and he was about to start demanding more information when Marinette hissed "Chat incoming!"

"Dammit." Chat snarled driving a right uppercut into the mans jaws. He hit a little too hard feeling the crunch of bone and causing the man to jerk up in the chains making Marinette nearly lose her balance. Either way the man folded over Chats shoulder as he ripped Marinette's chain off the dudes arms.

"A little warning next time?!" Marinette snapped as Chat leaped up the shelving with the dude still over his shoulder.

"Sorry I didn't feel like getting shot again and I'm assuming your incoming guys all have guns." Chat hissed back as they both moved down the top of the shelves in an attempt to avoid the people coming at them. Unfortunately there was no way to be stealthy running down the shelves and it was obvious where they were even without talking. The warehouse around them was coming to life with the same fury as a kicked over ant pile and it made Chat grit his teeth.

"You got shot?!" Marinette gasped the alarm in her voice making something warm and squishy fill his chest.

"Bulletproof suit My Lady." Chat answered swiftly then cursed as bullets strafed the side of the shelves they were on.

"That's not the point! We need to get out of here. Is that guy important?!" Marinette demanded coming to a halt and crouching low as bullets whizzed through the air just above their heads.

"Nope!" Chat replied throwing him in the direction of the firing bullets.

"What the-" then a thump with several cries of pain were heard and Chat lunged forward scooping Marinette into his arms as he bolted down the shelves before leaping to the next set.

"I can run!" Marinette protested as bullets flew past them pinging as they struck metal above their heads making her duck further into the safety of his arms.

At least one hit Chat by his annoyed hiss and Marinette felt her heart squeeze in worry. She had already given him stitches once, she did not want to add digging a bullet out to the list of medical things she could do to a person. Seeing her grimace and her face contort with worry at his hiss Chat didn't have to imagine what had her so concerned.

"I'm alright Marinette and besides not even you can clear the amount of space I just did. I don't care how fast you are." Chat huffed skidding to a stop several jumps later as he realized they were out of shelves. "Dammit I should have gone back for the window."

"We would have been filled with bullet holes had you done that. The space is too small to escape from easily and it would have been like shooting fish in a barrel. We need to get out of here now before they call the reinforcements down on us." Marinette returned twisting in his arms to get the lay of the building. "There is a rolling door over there. Can your Cataclysm handle the thinner metal?"

"Yes. Where?" Chat demanded ducking instinctively as a bullet whistled past his head. Just because his suit was bullet proof didn't make Chat think his head was.

"They're out of shelves get them!" a masculine voice screeched as Marinette pointed Chat in the direction he needed to go.

Leaping to the ground Chat dropped Marinette's legs and practically tossed her towards the door. "Go!"

For a brief second he wasn't sure that Marinette would do as he demanded especially when her eyes narrowed dangerously but all the sudden she simply turned and ran.

"Please don't get shot…" Chat pleaded to no one in particular and grabbed hold of the shelving unit that he had just jumped off of.

People were running down the aisle towards him shooting in his general direction and Chat wasn't sure if they knew what he was attempting to do or if they were just trying to hit him while he was somewhat standing still. Either way the sound of missed bullets pinging around his head was obnoxious and gripping the one bar he poured all his strength into trying to shove it over. To his surprise the whole thing shook violently at his first thrust, shifting fairly easily at his second, and Chat only had to rock it twice more before the whole shelving array came crashing down. Screams rent the air and Chat bolted on all fours away from the toppled shelves while bullets pinged off them far too close for his liking. Closing the gap swiftly, Marinette was just before him when his ears picked up the sound of pounding feet from other men trying to catch up to them.

"How many of these idiots are there?!" Chat snarled to himself coming upright as Marinette slid on a patch of oil nearly hitting the ground as she wind milled her arms.

He was at her back in a moment shoving her into an upright position so she didn't hit the ground when all the sudden a man yelled "Stop running or we will shoot to kill!"

"So they have been missing on purpose this whole time?" Marinette gasped covering her nose even as she slid to a stop.

Chat wanted to yank her off her feet and keep running. After all, the door was right there in front of them, even if it was closed and locked. It was a far better option than the men with guns approaching from the back and it would be easy to shatter it with cataclysm before escaping with Marinette into the night. However there was a chance for snipers out there especially since Hawkmoth had hired one to take him out once before and if he got injured, he knew Marinette wouldn't leave him even if it meant her capture or death. Fumes burned Chats nose as the two of them came to a complete halt still trying to decide on what to do and glancing down he realized the patch of oil Marinette had slid on was actually part of a large trail that led to the closest stack of shelves. It smelled like a mix of gas and oil so either they were storing leaking equipment or they were storing flammables for other, probably more insidious purposes. Busting out the door with bullets flying everywhere at them should only be a last resort, Chat decided as he looked up into Marinettes eyes. No matter how he carried her there was a good chance of her getting hit or grazed by a bullet out there and his chances of not getting hit in the head weren't much better. Knowing he didn't have a choice Chat turned to face the approaching men nudging Marinette further behind him even though he could sense her eagerness to fight. A metal girder was beside them and seeming to realize Chat wasn't about to let her fight or run when she could easily get shot she tapped Chats shoulder to get his attention. One of his ears swiveled in her direction but that was the only inclination that he was paying attention to her at all.

"There is oil or gas under our feet. Can your claws make sparks?" Marinette asked hating the idea but if he could get a fire burning it would definitely give them time to escape. Right now their chances of getting out with no injuries were swiftly dwindling especially since more men were heading in their direction weapons drawn.

"Do you have any idea how bad of an idea this is?" Chat growled his question directed at both Marinette and the men closing in on them.

"My jacket is fire resistant." Marinette quipped and Chat could hear her moving back towards the sealed doors even as the men before him laughed.

Chat gritted his teeth even as one of the thugs answered thinking Chats question had been directed only at them "You are trapped pussy cat and your cute little handler isn't bullet proof. The two of you will pay for injuring our buddies then both of you will make an excellent gift for Hawkmoth. Although I don't think he needs you alive… we could just give him your corpse and then he can still collect the lovely bounty for the mayors daughter."

"So do you know why Hawkmoth ordered her to be taken?" Chat hissed raising one clawed hand into the light.

The thugs cocked their weapons nervously as the man who spoke first answered. "Pretty sure he was just going to ask for the ransom but with the bounty it's not needed anymore although a double payday would be pretty sweet. The chick was easy prey just like you. Although I'm sure she is being treated far better than you ever will be."

"I am no one's prey." Chat hissed his tone deadly and before the men could move he slashed his claws down the metal sending a cascade of sparks flying towards the ground.

One thug cursed as flames erupted while the other two screamed like frightened children. Chat ignored the flames his suit and boots protecting his legs momentarily. Without delay he called "Cataclysm!" as he raced towards a stock-still Marinette standing just outside the pool of flames and the steel corrugated door. Somehow she knew what was coming, leaping lightly into his one armed embrace before he slammed his one palm into the thin steel door. A resounding crack echoed as the shutter door shattered outwards shards turning to dust as they flew. Chat barely lost his stride in the collusion although Marinette clung a tad tighter to him in the rain of shattered metal that fell in their wake. Fresh air curled around them as Chat sprinted away from the now burning building. He wasn't on fire and neither was Marinette so he didn't dare stop to put her down since she wasn't raising a fuss. Instead Marinette was clinging to him in a way that would allow him use his own arms better, when he finally decided to let her go that is.

"Move faster Chat the buildings going to blow!" Marinette called her eyes on the flames that were growing worse by the second. The open rolling door was allowing massive amounts of fresh air to circulate and the building couldn't have been up to any sort of safety codes since Marinette could literally see the flames running up the walls faster than what should have been possible. They were bolting across the street through open ground and thankfully no snipers or other guns were firing on them. Although Marinette had a sneaky suspicion that anyone on or in the building were simply trying to find a way out at this point.

"Hang on!" Chat replied tersely and suddenly they were airborne.

Marinette withheld her yelp until the building behind them was engulfed in a boom of light and sound. Closing her eyes Marinette ducked her head into Chats neck holding on with her legs as she blocked Chats ears with her hands. The concussive wave caught them but they were already over the roof of the building and Chat managed to land on his feet ducking down below the upper portion of the wall while hoping they were far enough that any debris wouldn't reach them. At some point Chats arms had come down around Marinette curling her impossibly closer to him and they stayed like that for several moments waiting for any other explosions to light up the night. Several pops and muffled booms echoed out from behind them but no debris fell there way.

"Are your ears ok?" Marinette asked removing her hands from his soft cat ears. Her own ears were ringing slightly from the initial sound blast but she knew that the blast, while uncomfortable for her would have been very painful to him.

"My ears are fine thanks to you." Chat replied his tone telling her that he wasn't pleased with her actions but that he was thankful. "Are you ok? No burns or any other wounds?"

Marinette shook her head hearing the concern lacing his tone and wondered when she had started being able to read him so well. "Ears are ringing, clothes probably smell like gas, but I'll be fine. I managed to get out of the pool of before you lit it up so no flames touched me. If you are ok we should really get out of here. The cops will definitely be on their way and neither of us could or should explain our presence here. Unfortunately I won't be able to say that Chloe was out here at one point now. Although thanks to you we do have another clue."

Chat preened as he rose to his feet allowing Marinette to regain hers and the two of them turned to look at the damage that they had caused. The warehouse they had busted out of was in complete flames and the one next to it was starting to catch as well.

Marinette winced. "Something within that building had to have been an explosive of some kind since gas or oil alone shouldn't have blown up so viciously. I don't think anyone made it out of there before the building went up…"

Chat shook his head in agreement. "There wasn't anyone in that building worth saving. Besides we almost didn't make it to a safe distance with my speed. Anyone that close couldn't have survived unless they hid in a basement or something."

"I hope not. They will be slow cooked and then the floor would probably come down on them." Marinette whispered a shiver running through her frame before she abruptly turned away. "Come on Chat. We need to go if we don't want to get caught and I still have to work tomorrow."

Moving to the other edge on the far side of the roof she raised an arm to toss out her manriki but Chat caught her arm before she released. Before she could complain or demand why he stopped her Chat jerked a thumb at himself.

"You know it will be faster if I give you a ride. Besides I have more information to share with you." Chat stated turning his back to her so she could climb on.

Marinette almost ignored him since she knew she could move plenty fast on her own but then off in the distance the first siren wailed into life. "Fine." Marinette grumped hopping lightly onto Chats back.

"How did you get out here?" Chat asked knowing that Marinette had a better way off this island rather than running full tilt down the bridge or across the upper girders.

"Its low tide. These older bridges have wider cement pylons where I can hook and swing from my Manriki. They also have thin paths running under the bridges for maintenance reasons. I used both to get over here without being seen. How did you get out here?" Marinette retorted as Chat took off making Marinette's breath catch in her throat as he cleared a jump no human could make even on their best day.

"I ninjaed my way across the top of the bridge but I have a feeling the tops of the bridges are going to be watched so we should probably use your way." Sticking to the shadows Chat moved practically without sound going to a full sprint since they wanted to vacate the area quickly. All of the people the two of them had ducked to get out here had either run away or towards the rapidly growing fire behind them.

The trip across the water was nerve wracking since Marinette could see even less under the bridge now than before and by the time they hit the bank the first cop car was arriving to try and cordon off the bridge. Chat slipped past the man with an ease that had Marinette wondering how long he had been at this and then they were in the shadows of the main buildings. Taking to the rooftops Chat made excellent time and he explained what the one chubby man had told him before his companions killed him. Marinette asked multiple questions and double checked the address Chat gave her. Both of them wondered if they should make a run over to the area tonight but with cop cars racing past them every so often neither of them felt that it would do any good. After all with the island burning the Hawkmoth gang would be on high alert and it didn't help that both of them were tired since it was starting to get late. A few times Chat paused in shadows watching as cop cars flew past and Marinette checked her phone continuously in case Jackady called on her. They could tell fire trucks had already been dispatched to the fire from the sirens but none passed them as Chat made his way towards Marinette's home.

"I don't think they are looking for anyone just yet and they definitely won't be looking out this far. No normal human can move as fast as you." Marinette murmured as they stopped on a rooftop having made it into the city properly. Sliding off Chats back she looked out away from the city lights and into the night sky able to spot the telltale glow of a fire burning in the distance. "What a mess. I wonder if Gabriel is back in town yet…"

Chat flinched having forgotten all about pleasing his father with his presence when he gotten the call from Marinette. He sincerely hoped that his father hadn't arrived yet otherwise there would be hell to pay. "A friend of yours this Gabriel?" he asked keeping his voice nonchalant as they moved side by side through the night.

"My boss. Last I heard he was delayed but he should be returning to Paris tonight which means I am almost definitely going to be in his office tomorrow." Marinette sighed "I'm going to have to pull my other jacket out since this one smells like that warehouse. I suppose you don't have that problem though."

Chat grinned at her "Magic does have its uses. Do you want me to bring you the rest of the way home?"

Marinette shook her head as they dropped down to street level using his baton. "No I need to stop by and talk with Stormy. If I can get a few Whisperers watching the area Chloes supposedly is in we might get a hit and will be able to pull her out that much quicker. Plus I can make it on my own from here."

Chat pouted at her but secretly he was relieved since now he didn't need an excuse to leave her side. He had to get back to the train station like now. "Meowch My Lady are you telling me to scat?"

"Basically." Marinette said with a smile turning to face him.

He returned the grin and was truly startled when she stepped forwards wrapping her arms around him in a hug that he instinctively returned a purr vibrating in his chest.

Marinette jerked back looking surprised then a sly grin grew on her face "Are you… did you… you really do purr! I mean I thought I had heard it a few times but…"

Chat felt himself flush red and he broke contact. "Uh… yeah… it's a cat thing and don't you have to go? Sorry I do goodnight!"

He fled to Marinette's laughing and he knew that she probably wasn't going to let him live this down anytime soon.
