Looking around the depot and station, Iain looks for Comfort. He knew she was in as her car was parked up but no one had actually seen her. He stands still, hands in his trouser pockets. Maybe she'd gone to a meeting? He thinks to himself looking around again slowly walking around. He breathes in. Her perfume was in the air along with the smell of her vape. He breathes in deeply seeing where the perfume ends and the smell of strawberries from her vape. He turns around heading out of the depot and the ambulance bay, looking around. He frowns to him, pursing his lips. He looks around checking the coast was clear heading around the corner.
Walking around he finally smells the strawberry scent of Comforts vape.
"Ahh so this is where you're hiding." He keeps his hands in his trouser pockets. Comfort jumps looking around hearing Iain.
"Jesus! Don't do that." She looks at him pushing herself off the wall. Iain looks at her a little cheeky smile on his face.
"Ahh you can't hide from me I'm afraid. I'm stealthy." He raises an eyebrow, looking to her. Comfort gives him a look as if to say please stop. Iain laughs walking over leaning against the wall looking to her leaning on his arm. "Have you been out here all this time?"
Comfort nods looking away from him now he was next to her. Inhaling one her vape she lets out a slight yawn as she does so. Iain looks at her stepping in front of her into the smoke. He smirks. "Someone has been out and they're hungover." He looks down at her, Comfort just looks up at him not impressed. "Ohhh the boss is hungover. Brilliant!"
"Alright alright! Keep your voice down." She tuts a bit rubbing her head with her other hand. Iain stands there smirking he leans back against the wall on his arm looking at her. "I thought it be alright apparently the extra shots weren't a good idea." He looks at her little smug look on his face. "Needless to say I got in early had a nap then came out to hide from everyone. Thought everyone would think I'd be at a meeting."
"Oh they do." Iain shifts on his feet looking at her. "I did but then I could smell your vape. I've guessed this is your hiding spot so thought I'd come and have a look. And I was right." He looks at her breathing in.
Comf looks at him. "Do you want a medal?" She licks her lips looking to him.
"A good star wouldn't go a miss." He smirks a bit looking to her. Comfort looks at him.
"Gold stars are only awarded to the staff I like." She looks at him Iain gasps. Comf looks at him a little smirk on her lips.
Iain looks at her narrowing his eyes. "I thought I was your favourite. After all the shifts we've worked as well together." Iain pouts at her.
Comfort looks at him raising her eyebrows at him inhaling on her vape. "Well when you go against my orders all the time it puts you down the list."
Iain looks at her gasping putting his hands on his chest. "Wounded!" Comfort looks at him shaking her head smiling though as she did so. "What do I do to get back up the list?"
Comfort looks at him as she inhales her vape. Did she be normal with this answer or did she see how far Iain could take a joke. She looks at him debating on her answer. Iain raises his eyebrows at her awaiting her answer. She licks her lips deciding to see how far she could push it. Been as Iain was ex forces she hoped he'd kept his sense of humour. "End of the day… clean out the ambulance we're in… in just your boxers… or your tighty whites… not discriminating." She looks at him. Iain looks at her, pushing himself off the wall he holds his hand out.
"Deal." He looks at her, he could tell she thought he wouldn't do it. Comfort shakes his hand as she goes to walk off, she then stops making him lean down a bit.
"Stop following me behind the station… people will start talking." She looks at him before walking off. Iain looks down at her, a little side smirk appearing on his lips. He keeps his head tilted downwards, he pouts watching her walk off having to have a quick little look, checking her out. She wasn't his usual type, for one she was covered in tattoos, or her arms were anyway. He imagined the rest of her was and if it wasn't he'd be surprised. Her dark hair set off her mixed race skin tone and her dark brown eyes. She was good looking even Iain couldn't deny it, not that he ever said anything when the other fella's were all talking about her. He was more interested in getting to know her. He watches her vanish around the corner, giving it a few minutes before reappearing. Just as he appears the radio goes off, he answers it as Comfort comes back out of the kitchen, literally spinning around not even doing what she needed to do. He walks over to the ambulance looking to Comfort to see if she was hearing to the drivers side, which she wasn't. He diverts walking around to the drivers sides climbing in at the same time as her. Comfort looks to the onboard computer seeing what the call was she hadn't really listened. Iain sets off leaving the lights and sirens off as it wasn't a category 1 call.
He glances to Comfort who closes her eyes. He smiles to himself driving a long, he liked the fact that even Comfort, the boss, got herself hammered. So if she ever complained at them all, Iain would remind her of today. He drives along wondering what the call could actually be. All it said was difficulty breathing but it had been labelled as panic attack. Either control had got it wrong or it was a frequent caller.
They pull up outside of the location. It was on the main high street. A club. They look to one another a bit confused. The clubs weren't open yet. Undoing their seatbelts climbing out of the cab, comfort heads to the door of the club knocking on it before pressing the door bell. Iain grabs the medicos bag walking over standing behind Comfort. He steps back looking around, looking up to the windows above seeing one open. Comfort looks behind her to him seeing him looking above. She shakes her head. He looks at her as she raises her eyebrows at him, he steps back behind her giving her a look to say I'm doing nothing. She turns back to the door pressing the intercom again.
"Hello?" Someone finally answers.
"Hello paramedics. We got a call to this address?" Comfort replies her strong Liverpudlian accent coming through. Iain looks at her a bit shocked he hadn't realised her accent was so strong, she'd been hiding it all these weeks!
"Yes yes!" A buzz appears as the door opens. Comfort pushes it open slowly walking in slowly a bit cautious. Worried it was a trap. Since her first shift she wasn't sure about anything nowadays. A male appears from a doorway. Iain closes the door behind them turning around seeing the male. He raises his eyebrows slightly as he rummages in his jacket pocket for some gloves. He glances to Comfort who licks her lips breathing in. "This way my loves." Comfort nods beginning to walk she glances behind to Iain who looks at her, he shakes his head pressing his lips together keeping quiet. They walk through into the main club walking down the stairs towards the stage where a load of other people were. "Paramedics are here!" The male calls out as everyone on the stage turns around. Most of them were males all dressed in drag. Some of the others were half dressed clearly getting ready for the day ahead. Comfort and Iain walk up the stairs onto the stage.
"I'm Comfort this is Iain." She starts of with a smile. "Alright, what we got?" Comfort speaks as she looks to the male in the floor.
"Peachy, she was in the middle of her routine then she just fell to the floor and couldn't breathe." One of the males who was knelt on the floor, next to "Peachy". Comfort nods as her and Iain stand by them all. Peachy, looks up at them.
"I told them I was fine but they panicked."
Comfort smiles kneeling down. "Well me and my colleague will just do some quick checks, check everything is alright and then we'll decide what we're gonna do, alright?"
Peachy nods before swivelling her eyes over to Iain. "He can check me out any day." She winks at him. Iain looks at her smiling before looking o Comfort who looks down smiling as she looks at her watch checking Peachy's pulse. Peachy looks at him batting her eyelashes before looking at Comfort. "Although you're quite cute to. But your colleague is more my type."
Comfort looks up at Peachy after finishing the pulse check.
"Oh don't worry, Iain is everyone's type. I'm not offended don't worry." She smiles looking to Iain who looks at her with a look as if to say don't encourage her. "Let's do an ECG make sure everything is alright that side of things." Iain nods getting the equipment out. "I've got to ask for our notes so please don't be offended… what's your real name?" She looks at Peachy as Iain starts placing the electrodes onto Peachy.
Peachy looks at Comfort shaking her head. "None taken. My real names Brandon Smith." He smiles coming out of character. Comfort nods typing it up on the notes. "Date of birth 27 June 1981." Comfort nods again letting Iain run the 12 lead ECG. She takes an address along with medical notes, allergies. Previous visits to hospital or the doctors and any history of being out of breath before. She types it all on the iPad, glancing to Iain every now and then. Iain watches the tracing a bit then looks around. "Feel free to pay us a visit anytime." Brandon looks at Iain, who looks to him. "You can bring your colleague here as well. I bet you're fantastic on the dance floor." He looks to Comfort. Comfort looks up from the iPad.
Iain looks to Comfort then to Brandon. "Wouldn't know, she doesn't come out with us." Iain looks at comfort raising his eyebrows. Comfort tilts her head looking at him. Brandon gasps as do the others. "Being boss you see she doesn't feel like she can hang out with us. She's too big for us." Comfort looks at Iain she licks her lips as she stands up getting a numb foot from leaning on it more than the other.
"Looks like you won't have a job much longer." Brandon laughs, Iain laughs looking to him then up to Comfort.
"Nah, she's new aren't you Comf?" Comfort nods to him. "She doesn't wanna hang out with us weirdos just yet. I don't blame her." He smiles to Brandon then looks down to the tracing which had now finished. He rips it off holding it up to Comfort. Comfort takes it looking through it chewing her lip slightly as she did so. Iain stands looks to the stats then back to Comfort. "Weird to think me and her are the same age yet she's a senior paramedic compared to me. It's weird." Brandon looks at Iain surprised.
"She doesn't look a day over 18." He looks at Iain winking which makes Iain laugh.
"Now that…" Comfort looks up from the results. "Is how you complement your boss. You listening?" She looks at Iain who smiles although he was hiding a bit of a smirk behind there. "Right… nothing to worry about however I want to take you in just so the cardio doctors can take a look. I think there's a possible flutter in one of the lines on this paper. It could be nothing but I'd rather they checked it out and we were on the safe side. That sound OK?" She looks to Brandon who nods.
"If the professional says we need to go to hospital then it shall be." He smiles to Comfort. Comfort folds the results up into her pocket, before helping Brandon up off the floor with Iain to stand up. "I can walk don't worry." He kicks his heels off. "Easier without them." He begins to walk after Comfort and Iain grab the kit. "So you're telling me you've never seen her in heels or anything out of uniform?" He looks at Iain. Iain shakes his head.
"Nope, not a thing." He looks at Brandon then licks his lips realising how… dodgy that sounded. Brandon looks to Iain then to Comfort raising an eyebrow smiling. Comfort looks to Brandon then to Iain.
"Not here Iain… of all places to start thinking of your boss naked." She tuts a bit having to hold her smile back. Brandon laughs looking to them both as Iain gives her a little cheeky smile. They head outside to the ambulance, getting Brandon in. Comfort climbs in the front leaving Iain and Brandon to sit and chat. She drives off heading to the hospital humming a bit to herself as she did so. She zones into the conversation in the back every now and then smiling to herself as she drives along. Pulling up outside of the hospital ten minutes later, she parks up climbing out. She walks around the back opening the doors as she stands with a wheelchair. Iain climbs out holding his hand out for Brandon who was a bit wobbly, the shock was starting to kick in. They turn and head into the hospital where they hand over to one of the doctors booking him in. They wave and say bye before heading back out to the hospital.
Iain looks over to comfort as he sits behind the wheel. "Now the question is… if you were unclothed, would your body be as tattooed as your arms?" He looks at her raising an eyebrow. Comfort very slowly turns her head to him as she hears what he says. She licks her lips, now quite sure if he was being serious or not. Iain looks at her before driving off back to the station around the corner. They sit in silence for the moment until they're there and parked up. He looks back to Comfort as they take their seatbelts off. "Serious question boss. It's on everyone's minds trust me." Comfort looks at him as she climbs out of the cab, Iain follows behind closing his door. Comfort walks around looking to him holding the iPad. She looks at him then leans in. He leans down a bit to her.
"You'll all have to ponder a bit longer cos no one will find out…" She looks at him raising an eyebrow, smirking slightly against his ear. "You might do though." She smirks against his ear, turning around and simply walking off. Iain is left standing there, he looks to the floor realising what she'd just said. He closes his mouth which fallen open at what she had said. He stands up straight, clearing his throat a bit. He looks in front watching Comfort walk through the kitchen and down the corridor to her office. He licks his lips, swallowing before looking around the station. It was dead. There was no one in. Not even Jeff! He looks around then looks back towards the office. Had Comfort really said that to him? What did she mean? He looks around again shaking his head walking to the staff room making himself a coffee. Taking it back out he sorts the ambulance out humming along to the radio whilst Comfort did some paperwork in the quiet time they had.
A few hours pass and the end of shift nears. Walking out of the office, Comfort had been sorting her paperwork out in between calls. She'd left Iain to clean the ambulance out ready for the night crew. She walks out to see how he's getting on. Letting out a yawn she looks around the station had a few more ambulances in although most of the paramedics had already gone and the night lot had come in. She walks over to the ambulance her and Iain has been using just as Iain steps out. She raises an eyebrow before wolf whistling to him. He looks up pouting before posing.
He had a little pink maids outfit on that just about covered him for modesty. He stands with the mop in one hand looking at her. "I didn't expect a dress up." She laughs walking over.
"Ahh well, I don't do things by halves." He grins climbing into the ambulance backwards. "I mean we've gotta have some fun, ain't we?" He turns around.
"Woahhh!" Comfort does a double take as he turns around, baring all. "I… woah!" She looks away beginning to laugh. "I didn't say you had to commando." She leans against the ambulance laughing looking back to iain who looks over his shoulder to her.
"I thought about it…" he walks to the edge. "Then thought my black boxers would ruin the look so ditched them." He looks down at her smiling, seeing her still laughing. Comfort looks up at him shaking her head laughing.
"Brightened my day up this has." She laughs looking at him she pulls her phone out taking a photo of him letting him pose. "I will say though I didn't know you had a tattoo." She looks at him having noticed the massive wings tattoo on his shoulder blades at the top. "Impressive paramedic Dean. Impressive." She looks up at him, Iain looks down to her.
"I try. I know something else that is impressive to." He looks down at her, Comfort gasps.
"Iain!" She swats him with her clipboard ok his leg softly. Iain smirks down at her an eyebrow raised. "I think you need to go get dressed, I think the breeze around your skin is doing things to you." She laughs as she speaks pushing herself off the ambulance. Iain walks down the step closing the ambulance up. "Go get dressed and get down that pub with everyone." She smiles to him. Iain picks everything up putting it away as Comfort heads back to the office. Iain catches up with her.
"And will you be joining us at the pub?" He looks at her leaning over holding the door open to the staff room. Comfort looks at him. "Alright then. Everytime you don't come to the pub you've gotta show me another tattoo. I know you've got more." He looks at her. "You've seen mine now show me yours."
Comfort turns around looking to him. "No." She licks her lips, looking at him. Iain narrows his eyes giving her the evils. He looks to her then walks off going and getting changed into his shirt and jeans and trainers. Comfort sorts some stuff out in the office before going and getting changed into a baggy shirt and skinny jeans paired with some jeans. She walks out heading towards her car thinking Iain had already left.
"Alright what about…" he walks up behind her. Comfort looks up turning around looking to him. "Show me one that is similar to mine." She looks at him licking her lips. "You're not telling me you've not got one like mine."
Comfort looks to him holding her car keys. She wiggles her finger to him to follow her as she walks around the side of the station. There was safety lights down the side so it was all lit up. He follows her around glancing around then looks at her. She lifts her shirt up a bit at the back before pulling it up. Iain's eyes widen at the massive angel wings she had that spanned her back. He stares at them. He wanted to touch them, to trace the outline. They were amazing.
"Wow." He looks at them then to Comfort who lets her shirt down. She turns around looking to him. "You'll have to wait to see the rest." She pouts a little bit.
"Is there a story behind them?" He looks at her. Comfort looks at him she swallows before nodding.
"Yeah there is… I've had them since I was 16…" she breathes in then sighs. "You know with Courtney the other day? With her mum and gangs?" Iain nods. "Yeah well… once upon a time that was me." She shifts a bit. "I lost my mum when I was young, even younger than her. I got these wings in memory of her."
Iain nods then realises. "Ahhh wait… the little angels…" he looks at her as she nods. It made more sense now as to why Comfort has taken that call to heart.
"Yeah… I know how Courtney feels. Going through that without your mum… it's hard. But angels were my mums thing and that's why I got them. I used to make them come alive so to speak to my daughter when she was younger. She loved it. Made her think her Nan was with her, replying to her. I wished she was but it made me happy to know she was happy." Comfort shrugs a bit looking up to Iain who was looking at her. "Like I said you'll find out my history soon enough I'm sure someone will be digging into my life for you all to know." She smiles a bit walking back out towards her car Iain follows behind her nodding a little. He had been asking around but he'd stopped the other day. He wasn't too sure he'd wanted to know her past unless she'd told him and now he was sure he only wanted to know anything if Comfort told him. "Have a good night." She smiles to him rubbing her head a little bit as she opens her car door. Iain nods.
"Yeah you to… don't get too hungover bo… Comf." He smiles. Comfort looks at him smiling before climbing in her car. She sorts herself out before driving off. Iain watches her before signing a little to himself heading out to the pub meeting everyone up. He didn't stay for long. Deciding to go back home and chill. He goes onto Facebook seeing Comfort had accepted his request. He refreshes his feed. A post comes up from Comfort.
"To mam.
Your 25th anniversary of being an angel. I hope you have a party up there. I am down here. I'm by myself but nothing a vodka can't help.
I hope I'm making you happy and that you're looking after Carmina wherever she is in the world.
Until we meet again.
Love you.
Your precious Comfel. Xx"
Iain reads the post then looks to the photo of Comfort on her own, bottle of vodka in hand as she cheers to the stars. He licks his lips breathing in before sighing. A wash of sadness comes over him realising what she'd said about being out last night with friends and extra shots had been a lie. He looks to the post then puts his phone down looking to the photo of him and his sister. He was beginning to realise that, Comfort was pretty much by herself. That she didn't get close to anyone in the fear of losing them. He knew that feeling a bit himself but he had the team, his friends that he knew he could turn to. But Comfort… she'd come from somewhere totally different left her team behind and come in somewhere new. Around the same time as her mum had died. It must be hard. But what saddened him the most was that she's clearly got black out drunk last night because it was the anniversary of her mothers death… and not one single person at the station knew. She's been joking and messing around and no one knew that deep down Comfort had probably wanted to just cry. He sighs looking back to his phone and the post again, he now wondered what Comfort was doing tonight. He could message her but he wasn't sure how she'd react to it. He fiddles with his phone a bit before chucking it down turning TV on. He decides against it. He'd soon find out on shift as to what had been going on.
