TW: gang related issues, miscarriage mention. and heartache.
Please read and review. Cheers :)
Day later.
"We have an unnamed male. Approximately 16/17. He's been stabbed in the abdomen with a kitchen knife. Knife pulled out at scene by someone else, probably the stabber." Comfort and Iain burst through the doors to the ED with the trauma team in tow. "Given 10 of morphine but he refused anything else. Gang related so police are with us and will be staying outside Resus." Comfort speaks giving the low down for the team. "Sats at 10 BP of 110 over 60. Has said he's now allergic to anything." They spin the trolley around to the hospital bed. "On my count… 1…2…3." They lift the male over onto the hospital bed hooking everything up to the hospital supply. "Someone does keep ringing his phone, might be a friend or something." She hands over the bloody phone in her gloved hand. David, one of the nurses takes it from with a look of slight disgust.
"Thank you, Comfort." Dylan, the doctor in charge replies nodding to Comfort and Iain before turning his back ordering the team around on what to do. Comfort and Iain leave Resus. Comfort pulls her gloves off chucking them into the bin in Resus as she leaves. She ignores the police officers that were outside as they watch her leave. Iain turns his head looking to them seeing the look they give Comfort as she turns around. He looks back around to Comfort raising his eyebrows a little bit. He waits until they're outside and back at the ambulance and in the cab.
"What was that look for to them coppers?" He looks at her pulling his seatbelt on. Comfort slams her door slammed as he looks at her raising his eyebrows at the door being slammed. Comfort turns the engine on, driving off to get back to the depot.
"Put it this way…" Comfort checks the road, pulling out to make the way back to the depot. "When a copper hears the name Comfort Jones, they all know who I am. Doesn't matter that I do this job… I've been in trouble, my dad is inside for various things and my ex husband is also inside for many things. You get tarred with the same brush even if you're not the same." Comfort drives along, running her tongue along her teeth breathing in, pulling into the depot parking up in a space. She turns the engine off taking the keys out shoving them in her pocket climbing out of the cab. Iain looks at her his eyebrows raised, he looks down opening the door climbing out. Closing his door he walks around to the back of the ambulance where Comfort was opening the doors. He looks to Comfort who takes a deep breath in he'd clearly hit a bit of a nerve mentioning the police. He looks inside the ambulance to the mess it was in, blood, packets, padding and other stuff strewn all over the floor. He licks his lips a bit looking over to Comfort who stares at it all. She shakes her head a bit, turning around letting her hand slide off the door walking off heading to the hose pipe and buckets. Iain looks at her, he pouts a bit knowing there was more to it than she was letting on.
Comfort comes back with the buckets and other stuff along with the hosepipe to refill the buckets up. Iain climbs in beginning to pick everything up chucking them into a hazardous waste bag. Comfort stands watching him, wasn't much she could do until he'd done that. She reaches over for the kit bag deciding to wipe that down, taking everything out wiping it over disinfecting everything. She goes into a trance wiping everything down, listening to the words to the song that was on the radio, which Iain had turned on. All alone, I watch you watch her. Like she's the only girl you've ever seen. You don't care, you never did. You don't give a damn about me. She continues wiping…
Iain hums along to the song picking everything up before starting to wipe the cupboards down. He glances to Comfort to see what she was doing. He looks back to what he's doing. He hums along for a bit longer before turning around to Comfort again realising he'd not heard the bag being moved or anything. He looks down to her seeing she was wiping the same thing as she had already done. He looks down at her as she stares into the ambulance but not actually looking at anything. He holds the blue paper in his hand, he looks at her then shifts over to her. "Comf…?" He looks at her chewing his lip before shifting the kit bag off the chair in front of Comfort. He puts it on the floor noticing she doesn't even realise. He sits down on the chair in front of her, leaning down to her waving his hand in her face a little. "Comfort." He looks at her again. He looks at her before putting his hands on hers softly, taking the bit off kit she's wiping away from her. He looks to her seeing her blinking, slowly coming back to reality. She swallows looking down to her hands seeing the stuff had gone from them and replaced by Iain's hands. she shakes her hands away from him, pulling her gloves off chucking them down walking off. Iain whips his gloves off quickly, jumping out of the ambulance. He rushes behind Comfort, grabbing her hand softly pulling her back. "No, come on." He speaks sternly but gently. "Comfort… I know you didn't go out drinking other night with your mates… you stayed in didn't you? And just got totally bladdered."
"That sounds about for Comfort." A female voice appears. Iain frowns, he turns around looking around seeing one of the officers from Resus appear. He looks at the female officer, she had short blonde hair, slim build. He feels Comfort's hand tense in his hand, he looks down to it even forgetting it was holding it. He looks to her hand then around to the officer again. "Still never change do you? Always the drink." The officer walks over a bit more.
Iain raises an eyebrow. "Alright I don't need input from an officer who obviously just doesn't like Comfort's past, thanks." He looks at the officer frowning.
"Oh… I think I know Comfort a bit more, don't I, Comfort?" She stands there.
"Oh aye, how so?" Iain raises an eyebrow at her.
Comfort swallows she slowly turns around looking to the officer. "Because she's my ex wife." Comfort looks to the female officer. Iain does a double take at Comfort who just stares at the officer. He stands in between them both, he didn't know what to do… or say. He feels Comfort shaking his hand of hers. "Get out of my station Kathleen. I don't want you here. I don't want to see you or speak to you." Comfort stares at the female officer, who stands with her hands in her body armour. Kathleen, looks at Comfort a little slight annoying smile on her face.
"Nice to see you too, Comfort." She stands there. "I'm surprised that lad being stabbed ain't got something to do with you." She see's Comfort glaring at her. Iain steps back slightly not wanting to be in the way but he sort off wanted to back Comfort up… protect her in a way.
"I said get out of my station." Comfort replies back to her, not saying anything else. Kathleen looks at her slipping her hands out of her body armour slipping them into her trouser pockets.
"Ahh wait… I forgot…it's the anniversary of your mums death isn't it? That's why you'll be going off the rails. Makes sense." She nods a bit. She looks to Iain. "I hope you're not the new boyfriend? I'd stay away from Comfort if I was you… she's bad news." Kathleen looks at him, Iain raises his eyebrows at her. He could see some more of the team had come out from the staff room.
"Alright, I think you've made your point, now I suggest you do as she says and leave, yeah?" He looks at Kathleen, deciding to step in.
Kathleen smiles. "Oh you've trained him well." She looks around Iain to Comfort who looks up at her. She smirks slightly at her looking back to Iain. "I'd all keep away from her if I was you. She's bad news. She'll turn you insane. Why I had to divorce her." Iain looks at Kathleen chewing his lip a bit, glancing to Comfort who walks over to her slowly.
"The only bad news between us was that I lost our baby and that was my fault according to you. No one made you go and sleep with your ex whilst I was miscarrying." Comfort looks at her licking her lips. "I did everything to keep us together… and yet our marriage… our marriage meant fuck all to you." Comfort steps back from her. Iain swallows putting his head down hearing what Comfort was saying. "To me… to me you meant everything to me and you knew that… but you decided I was nothing, like everyone else always does." Comfort looks at her, her hand goes onto her stomach. "All I wanted was a family that I never had… and I couldn't give us that… but it seemed it was only me that ever wanted that… because you…" Comfort stops her voice breaking. "Because you certainly didn't want that. Now run along to that perfect life of yours… with your new wife and get out of my station." Comfort looks at her then turns around walking off, she brushes past Iain, walking past the team into the staffroom and off to her office. Kathleen remains stood there watching Comfort walk off. She goes to speak.
Iain shakes his head. "I… and this team don't wanna hear it." He looks at her. "She's not told any of us about your relationship but from what we've just heard we don't need to hear anymore. She's our boss and we like her. I don't want… no, I don't need to hear your side. It's very obvious you're a nasty piece of work who clearly didn't deserve Comfort. Now I suggest, like she's said you leave this station and let us get on with our jobs." He looks at her going to turn around. "Oh and until you lose someone close to you… you have no idea how it effects you. Mock her for drinking on the anniversary of her mums death all you want but clearly you have no idea how it grief feels, even after 25 years." He looks at her then walks off, the team all stay by the staffroom doors staring to Kathleen. He gets to the doors and the team he turns looking at her. Kathleen breathes in before turning around walking off.
They watch her walk off before glancing to one another. Iain watches her walk off before turning around walking into the staffroom down the corridor to Comfort's office. He walks down seeing the door was pushed too. He hesitates before pushing it open softly seeing Comfort sat her desk, her head in her hands staring down to her desk. He could hear the soft little sobs from her. He looks at her not sure whether to go over to her or not. He glances outside into the corridor seeing the team were still all stood still not entirely sure what to do. One of them takes charge and goes and starts cleaning the ambulance Comfort and Iain were in. He watches them for a second as the team all rally around getting it sorted. He looks back into the office to Comfort, he slips in closing the door to walking over to the desk. He walks around to the side of comfort, leaning back against the desk. He then very gently puts his hand on her shoulder, using his thumb to stroke her shoulder softly. He looks down to her he hated seeing anyone upset least of all though his friends. And that includes the boss. He gently spins her chair around making her move her arms off the desk. He shuffles in front of her before throwing his arms around her, hugging her tightly. He didn't expect Comfort to do anything but to his surprise Comfort turns properly to face him burying her face into his chest. She keeps her hands up to her face for a few seconds before resting them on his chest ever so slightly gripping his green shirt.
Iain looks down at her crying into his shirt. He holds his arms around her a little tighter holding her to him. He knew how she was feeling. It had only been a year since he'd tried to end things after loosing someone close to him that he blamed on himself. He was wondering whether Comfort had had any help with things. He was lucky that he'd had the help from his friends and had been to counselling. He got the impression though that Comfort just got on with it even though it was clear it was tearing her apart. He holds her close to him, pressing his lips together breathing in. He rests his chin on her head softly remaining where he was perched on the edge of the desk.
They remain sat as they are. Iain sits listening to Comfort's sobs, he closes his eyes wishing he could do something. He keeps his arms around her tightly, hoping it made her feel safe. Comfort's hands shift a bit holding onto his shirt a little more. This had been building for some months and now it had gotten too much for her. She hadn't wanted to break down at work especially not in front of one her team but even she could only manage so much.
The team all clean up the ambulance Comfort and Iain had been in. They look over to the office seeing Iain sat with Comfort who was clearly sobbing her heart out. They all stand watching for a bit before speaking to control, telling them to stand them both down. a flood of calls come through. The blue lights fill the depot up, the echoes of the sirens fill the area up. The ambulances soon file down until there's one left. Comfort and Iain's. They remain sat in the office, in silence. Besides the little sobs from Comfort.
