When I See You Smile

There was always the small moments that Mihawk always looked for. He had known Red-Haired Shanks for a while by this point. Spending more time with him. Getting involved into duels that rang loudly throughout the sea. There was one thing Mihawk knew for sure.

He was beautiful.

The way his eyes would light up. His hair would move in the wind that he would have to hold onto his straw hat to keep it on his head. His power was just an upside. Mihawk wouldn't even have cared if he was a pirate. There was something about him that just drew him in.

It was always those small moments that Shanks never seemed to notice that he was looking that Mihawk basked in. Seeing how happy he was. A large smile on his face. Eyes glittering whenever the light would hit them just right.

It was like Shanks was lighting up his world for him within seconds.

Mihawk would sit there. Just listening to Shanks talk about anything and everything. He could just keep going. There were sometimes when he was just quiet, instead just waiting in the quiet. Others when it was like this and all he did was speak. Sometimes there was no in between.

Shanks had looked at him, pausing for a second but his smile was still there. "What are you looking at?" Shanks questioned.

Without a second thought, Mihawk replied with, "Your smile."

The red head's face immediately heated over. His face burning bright red as his eyes widened. "My… smile?" Shanks muttered, lifting his hand towards his face that had Mihawk reaching out immediately. Stopping him from blocking his view of it.

"Getting bashful now?" Mihawk teased.

That only caused Shanks' face to get even redder as he shook his head, "Of course not!"

The Swordsman let his own smile come to his face as he reached out, using his finger to force Shanks to look at him again, "Smile for me."

"People don't just smile on command." Shanks laughed in disbelief, either way that smile came back to his face.

Mihawk leaned in, pressing their lips together for a brief moment before he was pulling away. "I have to go."

Shanks laughed, slipping his fingers into Mihawk's, and stepping forward, "I'll see you on the Grand Line when I have a crew with me."

Mihawk hummed, "Maybe sooner."

"Someone starstruck with me?" Shanks questioned, tilting his head, and letting his smile grace his face.

"If you keep smiling at me like that," Mihawk paused, sliding his thumb over Shanks' bottom lip, "Yes."

He would marry him if it meant seeing that smile more.

The next time Mihawk had seen Shanks again, had oddly been sooner than he thought it would be. They were still in the East Blue, but it had been almost two months since they had seen each other last. What he didn't expect to see was Shanks kneeling on the ground, bracing himself up with another. Standing across from Shanks were a few men. Weak compared to Mihawk, but looked like criminals, nonetheless. There was another man, much taller than Shanks kneeling next to him like he was checking him over.

"Red-Hair?" Mihawk questioned, frowning as he took a step forward.

The second Shanks turned his head to look at him, Mihawk immediately saw red.

Shanks' lip was busted open, but he was rubbing at his eye. There was no smile on his face. One that he would get the second he saw Mihawk. Instead, there were tears in his eyes.

"Hawkeyes?" Shanks' voice had cracked.

Mihawk growled as he reached behind him, grabbing the grip of his sword, and pulling it out. He gritted his teeth as he walked forward, eyes locked to the men just before Shanks. With a quick survey of the scene, there was a piece of broken wood nearby. Blood on it from the glance that he had given to it. The three started to cower immediately, raising their hands up. "Hawkeyes? As in the Swordsman?"

"Oh, his eyes are on us, man. We have to go." Another exclaimed.

"What did you do?" Mihawk growled, walking right past Shanks and the other man.

"Nothing!" One immediately pleaded.

"I don't want to die like this, man! C'mon, let's just run!"

"We swear!" The third shouted, "It happened all too quickly!"

Mihawk snarled as he went to move his sword, bringing it completely in front of him. He could feel the bloodlust. Shanks was hurt. Someone hurt Shanks and he would cut down whoever did it. These three looked guilty.

"Mihawk! Wait!" Shanks suddenly shouted. Mihawk ignored him. Shanks would just gave him the same saying that he was fine and to leave the men alone. Shanks had blood on his face. Tears in his eyes. His smile was gone. These men were clearly not trying to help and were the same kind of people Shanks would probably have an altercation with.

"You hurt him." Mihawk hissed, going to move, letting the haki come to his blade.

"Mihawk!" Shanks yelled again, "Stop!" Arms wrapped around his torso, hands laying flat on his chest that had him freezing in place.

"Shanks." Mihawk growled, "You can't keep letting people do this to you."

"They didn't!" Shanks exclaimed. His arms tightening around Mihawk's torso, his head settling between their shoulder blades. "I… my sandal broke and I kinda… fell They are just bystanders!"

Mihawk blinked.

What?

He turned his head enough to look down, seeing that Shanks was in fact only wearing one intact sandal. Mihawk gritted his teeth, tightening his hand around the grip of his sword, "Then why are you crying?"

Shanks gave out a nervous laugh, "When I was trying to catch myself. I may have accidentally caught myself with my face."

"You broke your fall…" Mihawk muttered, "With your face?"

Shanks pulled away, hiding his eyes under his hat but it didn't stop the fact that his face flushed over. "I didn't mean to."

"So, the tears—"

"I hit my nose. That shit will do that to a person." Shanks muttered.

Well, this was awkward.

Mihawk sighed, sheathing his sword back into place as he looked back at the three men. "My apologies. I didn't realize my fiancé was such a moron."

He heard the choked sound from behind him from Shanks for a second, but Mihawk brushed it off. The three gave him looks for a second, "We are just gonna…" They started, pointing away, "Go. Before you change your mind." With that, they were taking off.

The Swordsman exhaled, looking back at Shanks to see a glimmer in his eye, peering underneath the brim of his hat. "Fiancé?" Mihawk froze for a second. Not even realizing he had said that. "Something you aren't telling me, Hawkeyes? I didn't realize I had one."

He had to think of a way out of this.

He looked down, noticing that Shanks was standing in the dirt with only one shoe. The idea coming to him that had him grabbing Shanks' wrist before another arm was moving under his legs, scooping him off the ground.

"Hawkeyes!?" Shanks exclaimed. "What are you doing?"

"Fixing your problem with the broken sandal. It's disgusting to walk on the dirty ground without proper footwear. You could injure your foot. If you injure your foot, I can't fight you." Mihawk explained.

"Yeah, that is totally why. Are you seriously not going to answer—" Shanks was cut off by Mihawk adding,

"Let's go get you some new shoes."

As they walked towards the docks, Mihawk paused as he noticed the man from before walking behind them with Shanks' bag hooked on his arm. "Who are you?" Mihawk questioned. He finally got a better look at him now. He was definitely tall. Taller than both Mihawk and Shanks. His black hair pulled back in a loose ponytail. A cigarette hanging between his lips.

The man smirked, "Your apparent fiancé's First Mate." He stated, reaching out with one hand, "Benn Beckman. Shanks has told me about you."

Mihawk moved, shaking his hand despite the fact that Shanks was in his arms. It was easy enough. Shanks was light to him. "Dracule Mihawk."

Benn nodded, motioning towards the docks, "The boat is over there." Mihawk looked over, sure enough, Shanks' familiar small boat was there. "He just bought some new shoes on the last island."

"You know I'm literally right here, right?!" Shanks grumbled.

"Shush, the adults are talking."

Mihawk chuckled at the huff that he got from Shanks. With them at the docks, he placed Shanks back down in the grass as Benn moved over to the boat, stepping in and going towards the cabin. Benn reemerged a few seconds later without Shanks' bag and a pair of sandals.

"Here." Benn said, handing them off to Shanks, "I'm running back into town to get the last of the supplies we need. I'll leave you two alone."

"Thanks, Benny Boo!" Shanks exclaimed as Benn walked off.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, Little Red!" Benn threw his arm over his head, making a grumbling sound. Mihawk cocked his eyebrow looking back at Shanks. Shanks noticed, a second later, he was howling in laughter, throwing his head back before he was kneeling over and slipping his new set of sandals on.

"Benny boo?" Mihawk questioned, the amusement in his voice as he crossed his arms. "Something you need to tell me, Shanks?"

Shanks peeked up at him, making sure his sandals were secure on his feet before a smile came onto his face. Mihawk's stomach immediately twisted, making Mihawk's face pull into a smile. "Yeah, it was a random thing. We had just met, and this guy wouldn't leave me alone. I ended up seeing Benn and I remembered hearing the bartender call him Benn. So, I yelled out the first thing that came to mind." He stated, "Benn caught on that this guy was being a creep and called me Little Red. End of story. It just kinda stuck."

Shanks stood back up to his full height as Mihawk hummed. "So, he's your First Mate?"

The red head nodded, "Yeah, we've been sailing together for like a month now. I can rely on him."

"Good." Mihawk muttered.

Suddenly, Shanks was in front of him again, "You're avoiding."

"Am not." Mihawk shot back.

"Are too."

Mihawk sighed, "It was a slip of the tongue."

"A slip?" Shanks replied, sounding like he wasn't believing a thing Mihawk was telling him.

The Swordsman exhaled. Shanks was never going to drop this now. "I guess it was just a thought that was on my mind as of recently." He stated.

Shanks smiled again, leaning against Mihawk's front. His arms looping around his shoulders, "I kinda liked the sound of it. Are you sure you would want to be stuck with someone like me? You have your whole life ahead of you."

Mihawk leaned back against Shanks' boat, his own smile gracing his face, "So do you." Mihawk said back.

"I know." Shanks whispered. "What I don't get… is why you reacted like that."

"I realized something. The second I saw tears in your eyes. No smile on your face…" Mihawk's sentence trailed off, the pad of his thumb moving over the split in Shanks' lip. "When I thought someone hurt you, I was prepared to fight anyone who dared lay a hand on you."

"I'm a pirate. It's going to happen." Shanks stated, "I can also take care of myself."

Mihawk smirked, "I know you can. Just the thought. I realized; I want this for the long haul."

Shanks laughed softly, shaking his head, "Is it me you want or my smile?"

Mihawk's arm curled around Shanks' waist, pulling him closer, "Your smile lights up even the darkest of nights." He muttered, "But it's who the smile belongs too."

The red head shuffled on his feet, looking up at Mihawk with a soft gaze. "Ask me."

"What?" Mihawk questioned, the shock coming to him a second later. Blinking as Shanks just smiled at him.

"Ask me."

It clicked.

Mihawk grinned, "Shanks, will you marry me?"

Shanks' face immediately broke out into a bigger grin. "Yes." He whispered.

Mihawk shook his head, his own smile still staying on his face before he leaned in and captured Shanks' lips with his own. He stood up, pulling Shanks off of the ground for a second before settling him back on the ground. He pulled away, letting his forehead settle against the red head's.

"Just promise me something." Mihawk muttered.

"What?" Shanks questioned, twirling his fingers over the underside of Mihawk's hair.

"Never lose your smile." The older pirate whispered.

Shanks laughed, nodding, as he leaned in and pressed his lips to Mihawk's for a second.

When they pulled away, Mihawk's gaze narrowed on Shanks' lip. "Does that hurt?" He questioned, pulling his handkerchief from his pocket, and dabbing at it, pulling off some of the dried blood from it.

Shanks shook his head. "No, but I hurt my pride a little bit."

Mihawk snorted. "Understandable."

"Though," Shanks muttered, "I got a fiancé out of it."

Mihawk laughed, working at the wound of the younger pirate's lip, cleaning it off completely, "Maybe it was a good thing your dumbass tripped over his own broken sandal." He hummed for a second, pulling away as he completed his work, "Maybe, try not aiming for your face. Your smile looks better without blood on it."

Shanks rolled his eyes, "You really do just want to marry me for my smile." He huffed for a second, crossing his arms.

Mihawk shook his head, "No, it's just a bright side. I love everything about you."

That pink tint came back to Shanks' face. One that Mihawk loved making him get on his face. "I love you." The red head whispered. Mihawk couldn't help but lean in again, pressing another quick kiss to his lips before he was standing up.

"Let's go." Mihawk stated, wrapping his arm around Shanks' shoulders.

"Where?"

"To get your dumbass a ring."
