Part 4: Revival and Summoning
"So you're a Master now, huh..." Kenji Asahina mused as he walked down the hallway with Haruhi. "You know, your servant self seemed to be rather friendly with me... not in THAT way, I mean, but..."
"I get it," Haruhi cut him off. "I have her memories, remember? But yeah, your personality does kinda remind me of Mikuru a bit..."
"You're not the first one to say that," Kenji mused. "But, you know, I've never seen any pictures of her or anything..."
"Oh, well here," Haruhi took out her mobile device and started going through her picture collection. "Where is it... ah-ha! Here you go!" She showed a picture of herself and Mikuru Asahina in their school uniforms, Haruhi grabbing the other woman in a light, friendly headlock and making a peace sign, Mikuru smiling nervously.
"Wow, she's cute," Kenji observed. "Like a little sister that I wanna protect, almost..."
"...You don't say?" Haruhi smiled knowingly as she put her phone away. "Anyway, Da Vinci's working on my uniform-slash-mystic code now, when it's ready I'll do the ceremony and make it official."
"So how come Smith isn't with you?" Kenji asked, looking around a bit.
"Eh, the guys from the Clock Tower wanted to check on the corpses of the other forty-seven Masters that got blown to hell by your mole," Haruhi replied. "Something about crests..."
"The Magic Crests are what they're after," Kenji stated. "Especially the former A-team's, those'd be really valuable to them, or so I hear..."
*Speaking of which...*
"Would you care to explain this to us, employee?" one of the mages inquired critically, indicating the seven empty coffins that should have held the remains of the A-team.
"I have no idea, I swear," Kyon put his hands up. "We haven't touched them since the bombing..."
"What about your alien friend?" another mage turned a critical eye to Yuki.
"You are mistaken, Lord Mage," Yuki said in response. "These coffins were empty before I arrived. Also, while their Magic Crests may be valuable to you, they cannot advance the Integrated Sentient Data Entity's evolution, and so are of no use to us. In other words, I have no motive to remove their corpses."
"Maybe Lev Lainur took them," Kyon suggested. "After all, he wouldn't want any survivors to get their hands on such powerful crests either... maybe we should get Holmes to look into this."
"Even though your fiancee doesn't believe in him?" the first mage raised an eyebrow.
"For what it's worth, I would have agreed with her not too long ago, before I came here," Kyon shrugged. "But hey, now's the chance to prove he really is the great detective he says he is, right?" There was a general murmur of agreement.
"Excuse me," Yuki suddenly spoke up, the group turning to see her standing next to another coffin. "This one shows faint signs of life."
"What? Another survivor?!" the second mage gasped in shock.
"I thought Da Vinci said there was nothing we could do for them," Kyon pointed out.
"That is correct. There is nothing the surviving staff could do to resuscitate them," Yuki agreed. "Even I cannot bring the dead back to life. But I may be able to restore this one. However, there is a risk."
"What risk would that be?" the first mage inquired.
"I cannot vouch for her mental state when she awakens," Yuki explained. "She is nearly braindead now, and may have a psychotic breakdown upon awakening after restoration, in which case she would have to be... humanely euthanized. Do you still wish to proceed?"
The Clock Tower group exchanged looks. "...very well, do as you propose, alien," the first mage spoke for them.
"Excuse me," Kyon cut in, "my friend has a name, and I would appreciate it if you addressed her properly. Need I remind you that she could delete you with a snap of her fingers?"
"Ah... ahem. Yes, of course. My sincerest apologies," the mage nodded. "Please, Miss Nagato, proceed when you are ready."
"Understood," Yuki nodded, promptly turning and placing her hands on the coffin, which soon lit up with several specks of small squares rising up and dissipating. Which such visual effects were unnecessary, Haruhi had stressed that some people felt better if they could see that something was happening. "...Done," she said after a few seconds. "Opening coffin..."
The small crowd waited with bated breath as the lid swung open, revealing a young girl with orange-red hair done up in a small side ponytail, dressed in the same uniform that Ritsuka usually wore. Said girl then began to stir, groaning and stretching her arms, yawning loudly. Her eyelids opened, revealing irises the same color as her hair... "Oh, good morning! Wow, feels like I slept forever!" she spoke up, getting out of the coffin. "So, uh, what happened to the rayshift? And where's Olga Marie?"
"Uh..." Kyon stammered. "Um, there's no rayshift right now... actually..." he heaved a sigh. "Don't be too alarmed, but... there was a bombing, and... most of your fellow Masters... they didn't make it."
"...Oh." the girl blinked a few times, shoving her hands into her pockets. "Well, that sucks. No time travel, no going back to Fuyuki in 2004. Bet Olga was upset..."
"Um, yeah, she didn't make it either," Kyon said with a shake of his head.
"Geez! Did everyone just up and die?!" the girl yelled in apparent exasperation. "What about the bomber?"
"We got him. He's dead," Kyon replied. "Actually, you were in pretty bad shape yourself, until Nagato-san here fixed you up..." He pointed to Yuki. "By the way, what's your name?"
"Gudako. Riyo Gudako," the girl replied. "So, how did this girl fix me, if no one else could?"
"I repaired your damaged data," Yuki stated. "It seems your mental condition is stable, thankfully."
"Damaged data...?" Gudako tilted her head curiously, before something occurred to her. "AAAAAHHHH! I'm in the Matrix! Nothing is real and computers are feeding off our life force, and only The One can save us! Neo save me!" She wailed, falling to her knees and spreading her arms in overdramatic despair.
"Um, no, this is reality, I promise," Kyon sighed. "Nagato-san here is actually an interface for an alien supercomputer..."
"Aliens?!" Gudako jumped back to her feet. "So, what, we're just little pieces of data that you analyze and mess with at your whim?!"
"I... used to think that way," Yuki admitted. "But after spending so much time on Earth with John Smith and his friends, my perspective has changed drastically. You could say that I was assimilated into human culture... like the Borg from Star Trek, only in reverse." A few of the mages started murmuring at this.
"So you're... the opposite of the Borg...?" Gudako put a hand to her chin. "Oh! So, that means you're no threat!"
"Yes," Yuki nodded, managing a tiny smile. "My only objective now is to assist my friend with his work here at Chaldea, within reason."
"Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?" the redhead sighed and shook her head. "Could've avoided a lot of this drama, you know!"
"Yare yare," Kyon facepalmed, "this one's gonna be a handful..." It was a good thing he had so much experience dealing with unreasonable women.
*A short while later...*
Haruhi stood before the Summoning Chamber, now clad in a uniform almost exactly like the revived Gudako's. Despite her powers, she couldn't help but feel a little nervous, looking back at the other people gathered behind her...
"Afraid you're going to embarrass yourself?" Kyon snarked.
"You'll do just fine, Suzumiya-san," Koizumi assured her. "I have faith in you."
"You know I hate it when you say that, Koizumi-kun," Haruhi sighed and shook her head lightly.
"It's not as if I'm equating you with a deity," Koizumi shrugged, his smile unwavering.
"Right, right," Haruhi muttered, turning back to the chamber. "Okay, let's do this."
"Yeah! Then there'll be two girls to one boy! Girl power!" Gudako called out, causing laughter from a few, Ritsuka shaking his head with a smile.
"Please quiet down, Riyo-san," Yuki spoke up. "Suzumiya-san needs to focus."
"Okay, Miss Alien."
"Her name is Nagato," Kyon sighed with his head bowed.
"Alright, everyone please settle down," Da Vinci gently ordered. "Whenever you're ready, Haruhi."
"Okay," Haruhi nodded, the banter having settled her nerves a bit. Raising her right hand and spreading her fingers, she heard a hum as the system activated in response...
Please heed my words,
My hope creates your bodies,
And your aid creates my destiny.
Together, let us heal the future of humanity!
When all seems dim, we shall help each other!
I hereby swear, That I shall be all the good in the world!
That I shall defeat all evil in the world!
Seventh heaven clad, And the great words of power,
Gift me the power to help the Guardians of the Scales!
Pain shot up her arm and centralized in her hand, but she held firm. A bright light emanated from the back of her hand, the pain subsiding as said light formed into three command seals, the design slightly different from Ritsuka's or Gudako's. "Wow..." she couldn't help but stare at them in awe.
"Whoo-hoo!" Gudako jumped up in excitement. "We're the Terrific Trio now! The enemies of humanity won't stand a chance against the likes of us!" There was some mild applause from the Clock Tower mages and Chaldea employees.
"Um, thanks," Haruhi felt her face heating up. (And here I was, trying not to be center of attention here...)
"Well, now that that's done, shall we proceed with your first summoning?" Da Vinci stepped forward with staff in hand.
"HOLD IT!" Gudako cried. "Hold it, hold it, hooooold it! Aren't you forgetting something?!"
"Um, what?" Haruhi was somewhat put off by the redhead's sudden objection, while Da Vinci merely looked mildly annoyed.
"Me! I haven't summoned yet, either!" Waggling her finger, Gudako continued, "After all, I came before she did! She's #49, I'm #47! It's simple logic!"
"Oh, come on! Seriously?!" Haruhi protested.
"Haruhi," Kyon raised his voice, "it's not worth arguing over. Just let her go first."
Haruhi made a sound between a scoff and a sigh, before relenting and stepping away. "Oh, fine..."
"See? Your boyfriend knows what's what!" Gudako smiled. "Shall we, Leonardo?"
"I prefer being addressed as Da Vinci-chan," the genius shook her head as she loaded three saint quartz into the chamber. "Anyway, pull the lever when you're ready. And don't be disappointed if you get spicy mapo tofu or something..."
"Well, I do like mapo tofu, but I would prefer a servant!" Gudako said with a shrug, before pulling the lever... the system whirred to life, a ring of rainbow orbs appearing... "Whoo-hoo! Jackpot on the first try!"
"Well, I'll be..." Da Vinci muttered as as the orbs collapsed into a beam of prana shooting into the ceiling, several of the Clock Tower mages putting their hands up to shield their eyes from the light... Soon, a humanoid shape took form, with long hair and a sizable bust...
"Wowww... I got a sexy one!" Gudako grinned as the light faded, revealing the woman to be elegantly clothed in a fancy black dress, with brown hair and yellow eyes, also possessing tapered ears. "Hmmm... I'm thinking Caster, or Assassin..."
"Servant, Assassin-class," the newly summoned servant spoke. "My name is Semiramis. Now then... first, you must prepare a throne for me. Then, we shall talk. If you do not have one, then YOU will have to serve as my chair."
"Oooh, I'll let you sit on me, Your Majesty!" Gudako exclaimed giddily, causing Semiramis to raise an eyebrow curiously.
"Greetings, Queen Semiramis of Assyria," Yuki spoke up as she stepped forward. "Welcome to Finis Chaldea. This facility is not as grand as your palace, but there are several facilities that should serve you well."
"Thank you," Semiramis nodded. "See, contractor, this is how you treat someone of my station. Take note."
"Yes, Your Majesty!" Gudako agreed, still smiling.
"Alright, if you two could please move aside, so Haruhi can perform her summoning," Da Vinci instructed. The two woman did so, Haruhi stepping in to take their place. "Alright, let me get the saint quartz installed, and then we'll be ready."
"Okay," Haruhi nodded. Once the chamber was ready, Haruhi flipped the lever...
But she wasn't expecting the item that popped out. "Giant black keys...?!"
"Congratulations, Suzumiya," Ritsuka sighed. "Now you know how I feel a lot of the time..." Several of the regular employees chuckled at this.
"These seem to pop up all the time," Da Vinci shrugged. Setting the black keys aside, she mused, "Well, shall we try again? I have enough quartz for one more spin..."
"Well, of course. I want a servant, too!" Haruhi said fairly. So Da Vinci loaded the last three quartz into the chamber... (Okay, give me a servant this time, I don't care who!) Haruhi thought to herself, closing her eyes as she grasped the lever... while she had better control of her powers, actually invoking them seemed to require her to be 'unaware' on at least some level... closing her eyes usually did the trick. So she pulled the lever, keeping her eyes closed as the system whirred to life once more, not opening them until she heard the telltale blast of prana that signified a successful summoning.
But as she opened her eyes, the form that took shape seemed familiar somehow... an armored form, that was difficult to tell if they were male or female at first... but as the light faded, certain details became clear.
Blonde hair...
Pale skin...
Dark-purple armor...
And a black sword with a red double-helix pattern...
(No...) Haruhi's eyes went wide in recognition. (No no no no no no NO...)
"Greetings. I am servant Saber," the woman opened her eyes, the irises a pale, unnatural gold in color with pinprick pupils. "I ask of you... are you the one who is to be my Master?"
Several of the employees were muttering in disbelief, as this servant should have become a memorial essence... even Da Vinci had a look of shock on her face.
"I ask again, are you my Master?" the newly-summoned Saber Alter repeated insistently.
"Y... yes..." Haruhi managed to get out, her left eye twitching slightly.
However, in her mind she was screaming... and the Celestials in the newly-formed Closed Space screamed as well.
"Oh dear," Koizumi muttered under his breath, "and she'd been doing so well, too..." He then raised his voice, "Ah, if you'll excuse me, I have a sudden urge to use the restroom..." The crowd parted to let him through, only stopping to share a knowing glance with Kyon.
"Artoria Pendragon," Yuki spoke up once more. "On behalf of my friend, I welcome you to Finis Chaldea. I must warn you, however, that another incarnation of you resides in this facility..."
"Is that so?" Artoria Alter raised an eyebrow. "Then you will take me to meet this other me at once. Is that clear?"
"I'll, uh, go find her for you," Kyon said quickly, turning and running off. (If only so I can give her a heads up before all hell breaks loose...)
*To be continued...*
