Chapter One

End of an Era

In the city of Brightmoon, lived a seemingly normal magicat. However, most of its residents never knew about her second life. For years, she has been known as The Magicat. All that they knew about her, was that her powers came from a Runestone.

-

Yes, she is a great hero, but it's late morning!

Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

Our great hero, Catra, finally woke up, to the vibrating alarm of her phone. She grabbed it, and answered. She stared at the screen, and listened.

"All units, level four mobilization. Location‐- Lashor Tower." The Police Dispatch had said.

This news made Catra sit, in surprise.

"Lashor?"

She quickly got out of bed, put two slices of bread into the toaster, grabbed her super suit, and sniffed it.

"Ugh"

Still gotta wash it. She prepared her gear, and as her breakfast was ready, she grabbed it before it could land. She grabbed her mask, which had a pair of yellow lenses, to hide her heterochromia eyes.

She was ready. Before she could go out, a knock came on the door, before a note slid under. Her bills were past due. That, she was not ready for.

"SWAT is 10-84 at Lashor Tower. All units standby, warrant is en route."

Deciding that she couldn't pay, anyway. She jumped out the window of her apartment, to join up with the Police.

She headed straight to Lashor Tower. Tung Lashor was one of the biggest criminals, she has been waiting to take down.

-

Halfway to Lashor Tower, the Police were being held up. Bullets were flying, cars were on fire. They couldn't move in yet, with the mercenaries keeping them at bay.

"We need more backup!" One Officer, yelled.

"10-32. Officers under fire!!" Another, radioed in.

One mercenary signaled the rest, to stop firing, and pressed into his earpiece.

"Bring in the hammer." He ordered. The rest of the mercenaries backed off. Which caused the Police, to ready their weapons. Completely, unaware of the speeding truck, heading towards their side.

They finally noticed, at the last second, and jumped out of the way. The truck, collided with their vehicles, and exploded.

The mercenaries, moved in.

But before they could get rid of the downed Officers, their weapons were sliced in half!

The Magicat arrived!

"Get her!"

"Morning boys! Now, which one of you wants to get a beating, first?" The Magicat asked, before dodging the first hit.

"We have a winner! Or, a loser, technically." She kicked him in the head, knocking him out cold. Then she moved on, to the next thug.

None of them, stood a chance, because of her quick reflexes. Not a minute later, every single thug was knocked out.

"Next time, you wanna fight me, just don't!" The Magicat ran towards her original destination, once she knew everyone was ok.

-

Lieutenant Mermista, was held up at the entrance. And the situation was worse than before. Not a single cop, could get through. Not without help.

"Get more backup! And lock down the airspace!" Mermista yelled into her radio. Just as The Magicat jumped down, right behind her.

"Mermista, you ok?" The Magicat asked first.

"If he makes it out of that building, we're gonna lose him." Mermista told her.

"I'm gonna go, uh…" The Magicat pointed to the gunfire.

Mermista looked back, and saw, her men were pinned down.

"Do your thing."

"Yes!" The Magicat ran through the cross fire. Dodging every bullet, aimed at her.

"Today's the day, Lashor." The Magicat found a lone thug, and closed in on him. He realized, she was coming for him, and he made a break for it.

"Hey, where you going?" She jumped on him, and they broke through the doors. With him, out of commission, she went for the next thug she saw.

"I'll clear a path, follow me!" She told the Cops behind her.

She would first, get rid of their weapons, before knocking out her opponents. She was obviously skilled, after many years of fighting people like this. Soon enough, the area was clear.

The Police Officers moved to an elevator, and pressed on the button next to it.

"C'mon, C'mon!"

An Officer noticed, the elevator light went off.

"They shut the elevators down! Take the stairs!" They went through the stairway, while The Magicat stayed behind.

"I prefer a more direct approach." The Magicat grabbed the doors, and pulled them apart. Once she was in, she scaled the wall, until she reached the vents.

She got in, and made her way through the ventilation system. When she found her destination: the server room. She went in, and began to fight.

And what do you know? She won! Not really much of a challenge. To be honest. She went to the computer, and started her magic.

"I don't know the first thing about hacking, but, is this cheating?" She asked herself.

Her magic was known to make her stronger, and faster than the average magicat, but it also, could be applied to other things.

The monitors in front of her showed an image of Tung Lashor.

"Hiding in the server room?" His voiced boomed through the speakers.

"Cowardly… Even for you." Tung Lashor stated.

"Says the guy frantically erasing his search history." The Magicat jabbed back.

"After all these years, you're still an ignorant child." Tung Lashor said.

"True. But that's part of my charm, isn't it?" The Magicat asked, as she finished downloading the evidence. Angering Tung Lashor.

"Damn you. Get that door down now!" He ordered his men.

Once the doors were open, they quickly moved in on The Magicat. Despite their chances.

"Look. You're job is to slow me down, not stop me. Even so, you suck at it!" The Magicat chuckled. Dodging each blow, and giving ones, almost twice as hard. She was having one heck of a morning!

She cleared the room, and moved out. Heading higher up the tower. Suddenly. Explosions! Gotta make it quick. She met up with more Police Officers.

"Hey guys, I guess bombs are part of Lashor's getaway plan." The Magicat guessed.

There was another explosion, but this time, someone called for-

"Help!"

"Sounds like they're trapped…" She noted.

"You go after them. We'll look for the bombs." The Bomb Squad Officer told her.

She wasted no time, running to the screams for help. Each civilian she came across, she told to get out. She reached someone, who was trapped under debris.

The Magicat grabbed under the debris, and lifted it up, as hard as she could. She slowly pushed it up, giving everything she got. She held up the debris, with all her might. I'm repeating myself… Yeah.

"Go! I got this!" Famous last words.

After they were safe, The Magicat pushed the debris, and jumped out of the way.

What was next? Fighting more goons? Didn't she already do that, like, three times? Whatever. Punching is always fun. A couple dodges, a couple hits. That actually got old, this morning. The higher up she gets, the closer she'll be to taking down Tung Lashor.

She went through another door, and ran into more Police Officers.

"You guys alright?" She asked.

"We were just about to call for backup." The Officer answered.

"I think I'm it." She reasoned.

"Lead the way. We'll be right behind you." She just might be getting on their good side.

"Heads up, boss." She heard a gun click.

Scratch that. These guys ended up on her bad side. Before he could fire, she jumped over him, and sliced his gun in half, and kicked his face.

These guys definitely aren't getting a raise. Nor will Tung Lashor pay them.

For this, The Magicat decided to give them, a lot worse bruising than usual. She evaded their gunfire, with precise reflexes, and hit them with magical strength enhancing punches.

Corrupt Cops are no better at fighting than paid thugs. Who knew.

Finally. After all that punching, she reached the door to Tung Lashor. She opened the doors to find him waiting.

"Really? You couldn't at least, try to hide? You're no fun when it comes to games." She bantered.

"Get the chopper ready. I won't be long." Tung Lashor called in.

"I'm surprised you made it this far. But your foolishness… ends now." Tung Lashor pressed a remote button, and a glass wall closed. Shielding him from The Magicat.

"Uh. You do know, I can still see you, right?" The Magicat said.

"Eight years of this insolence…" Tung Lashor murmured.

The columns on both of her sides revealed military grade turrets. Aiming right at her. But what difference would that make?

"Aw. For me? You shouldn't have!" She jumped out of the firing range, before she could get hit.

Ok, maybe they were a little faster than those mercenaries, but she could still handle it. When they needed to warm up, she sliced one off, and threw it at the glass wall.

When she threw the second turret, the wall gave in, and shattered.

"How is this happening!?" Tung Lashor exclaimed.

He ran towards his desk, and threw it, straight at The Magicat. Who threw right back, but this time, it hit.

The Magicat would have to watch out. Unlike his goons, Tung Lashor could actually throw a punch. And he was almost as strong as The Magicat.

Even though she was fast, Tung Lashor managed to grab her, and he ran her through the wall, before he rammed her against a pipe.

The Magicat dodged his next blows, but he grabbed onto her again, and threw her into another wall.

"You are everything that's wrong with this city!" He yelled.

"Huh." The Magicat pulled herself up.

"I was gonna say the same to you."

"You know what to do, men." Lashor ordered.

Seriously? Honestly, their fight was pretty fair, but why does he have backup? Well. Her odds are still pretty good. She just had to stay out of their way, while at the same time, stay out of his.

Again, Tung Lashor got ahold of her, and they broke through the floor. After they landed, Tung Lashor tried attacking her again. But she managed to get the upper hand, and then, they started falling again!

She got a few good hits in, before they landed. Finally, Tung Lashor was down for the count.

He was finally going to jail.

-

Tung Lashor walked in shame. Hands cuffed behind his back, Police Officers to his sides. He was-

"Finally off to prison, huh? You know, I think you've got more enemies in there than I do!" The Magicat joked.

"If you think this will be more than a minor inconvenience--"

"Whoop—Gotta go. Hey! Good luck, Lashor. I have a feeling, you're gonna need it." The Magicat ran off.

"Idiot. I'm the one who kept order in this city!" The Police Officers led him into the truck.

"One month! In one month, you'll wish you had me back!" The doors were shut. He was going to pay for his crimes.

-

"The lizard is heading to prison. End of an era." The Magicat said.

She got another call, and it was from work. So, she decided to head over, and fast.

The Magicat handled the crime, in Brightmoon. But Catra had to pay the rent! She worked as a spellmaker: a person who creates new spells that'll help the public.

And she was working on something ground breaking.

-

Catra walked through the door, and into the lab.

"Sorry I'm late, I--"

Catra stopped her explanation, as soon as she saw her boss. In the shadows, stood a woman. Dressed in a crimson uniform. She had long, black hair. And her skin was pale.

This was Light Spinner. And she was testing a new spell. A prosthesis spell. A missing limb would be replaced with magic. Since she had all of her limbs intact, an arm was formed next to her real one.

"You started without me-- !" Catra exclaimed.

"The grant committee's director will be here soon." Light Spinner explained.

But that didn't make Catra feel any better.

"It's fine, Catra. I created this spell. I think I can handle it." Light Spinner tried to convince Catra, who couldn't help, but worry herself.

The spell started to burn out, causing sudden bursts of flashes.

"The power dampening spell! It's out!" Catra said, as she tried to even out the magic, before it could cause any more damage.

"Oh man…" Catra thought to cancel out the prosthesis spell completely.

"Uh… maybe we should abort!?" Catra suggested, while she was still trying to fix things.

"Not yet--" Light Spinner instructed.

But it was too late. The spell backfired, and Light Spinner screamed in pain. Catra quickly shut down the spell completely.

"Light Spinner! Are you ok?" Catra asked, as she held up her boss.

"Another setback." Light Spinner told her.

"But we're close." She said, with pride.

The Committee Director, as well as two others, walked into the room, And noticed the smoke.

"Is anyone hurt?" She asked first.

"No. But it was all my faul--" Catra tried shifting the blame on herself, before Light Spinner interrupted.

"The energy levels exceeded our expectations. From a certain viewpoint, it's a very positive development."

"It doesn't smell very positive."

"I assure you, in the next phase --"

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves." The Committee Director interrupted. Then started to fan the smoke out of her face.

"Is there somewhere else we can discuss this?"

"Perhaps you should take the rest of the day off, Catra." Light Spinner suggested.

"But--"

We'll continue this later." Light Spinner gave the last word.

Catra decided that, this was the perfect chance for patrol.

-

The Magicat received a message from Mermista, telling her to meet up. So, she headed straight to her precinct.

She found Mermista on the roof, chewing on gum.

"Ever since you quit smoking, what do you tell people when you come up here?" The Magicat asked.

"That I need a break from their crap." Was Mermista's sour answer.

"Fair enough. So why'd you call? Need a date to the Policeman's Ball?"

"You got a black and white suit?"

"Uhh…" Was she serious?

"No Ball this year anyway. We spent too much integrating Hordecorp's surveillance tech." So, that was the problem?

"It was worth it though, right?" The Magicat asked.

"It was… until an hour ago. The whole system went down. Citywide."

"How?"

"They tell me someone sabotaged the central server, and now all the towers are offline."

"Hm. Inside job?" The Magicat speculated.

"Maybe. I'll figure that out later. Right now we need to get these towers back online. Fast."

"And you called me? Aw, that's sweet." The Magicat clasped her hands together, to her cheek.

"I called someone I can trust. Plus the signals are scrambled and we have no idea how to fix it." Mermista headed back in.

"Ooh. I love a challenge."

"You break it, you buy it." Mermista warned.

"I thought you trusted me!" The Magicat yelled.

Alright. Operation: Magical hacking, is a go. It didn't really take much to restore, but The Magicat received intel from the tower. Showing a crime taking place, nearby.

She headed over to the pinpointed area, and found a group of thugs, breaking and entering. Easy pickings.

Next one, she found someone being ganged up. So, she took them by surprise. Beating them down, without any problems. Once she was done with them, she checked up on the victim.

"All clear, miss." The Magicat told her.

"I knew Frosta was wrong about you. You're a little weird, but you got a good heart." The girl said.

"Have you got somewhere to go?" The Magicat asked.

"I can take care of myself." The stranger defended her pride.

"I'm sure you can. But just in case, there's a place called the F.E.A.S.T. Cente. --"

"Seen it. I don't want charity." The stranger said.

"They got the best berry pies in the city. Hands down." The Magicat told her.

This got the strangers attention.

"Mom used to make those. Haven't had any… in a long time." The stranger considered.

I'll check it out. Thanks, Cat girl." The stranger walked away.

"It's Magicat…"

The Magicat looked at her suit. It was battle damaged, from her fight with Tung Lashor.

"Not good. Can't keep patroling with a ruined super suit."

She went back to the lab, to fix it up.

-

The suit was layed out, on a table. With holes big enough for a good stitching. Not to mention, she was gonna have to wash it.

Unexpectedly. Light Spinner! She walked in, carrying bags of food, no doubt planning for a late night research.

"Catra?" The sorceress asked.

"Miss Light Spinner! I – uh… Whatcha got there?" Catra asked, completely surprised by Light Spinner's arrival.

"It's food. If I knew you would be here I would've—" Light Spinner noticed the suit, from behind Catra.

"What are you working on?" Light Spinner asked her assistant.

"Uh, just a side project." Catra lied.

Light Spinner got a closer look of the suit, realizing what it was. It all made sense!

"Of course. It's you."

"I—I don't know what…" Catra stuttered. No idea how to explain this situation.

"Oh please, Catra. It's obvious." Light Spinner actually knew.

"Let me explain."

"I only wish you had told me sooner."

There was no way getting out of this one.

"I wanted to. But I was afraid that if word got out, my family might be in danger." Catra told her. She had to.

"Hm, yes. I suppose if you are teaching her, you're bound to be a target too."

"Yeah." Wait. What!?

"I mean… Yeah." Did she really not know?

"Don't worry. Your secret's safe." Light Spinner promised.

"Well. I leave you to your work." Light Spinner grabbed her food, and walked out the door.

Catra began fixing her suit.

That was weird.
