Chapter Three
The Beasts
It was a peaceful night in the city of Brightmoon. Well, in most parts. The city's beloved superhero, The Magicat, had to deal with the crimes that happen, every so often.
The current crime, being a robbery. The current criminal, being Grizzlor. One of the supervillains that The Magicat runs into, from time to time.
The heroine herself, perched onto a lamppost, and greeted the grumpy Grizzlor.
"Hi, Grizz-bore."
"Seriously? Grr…"
The newly dubbed Grizz-bore leapt from the area, trying to escape from The Magicat, who leapt after him. The chase was on.
Grizzlor, who was a brute, was surprisingly quick on his feet, quick enough that The Magicat had to put in a good effort to catch up. Why did these supervillains have to be so difficult?
"Grizzly! What's the rush!? You're usually up for a good fight!" The Magicat yelled after him.
"I'm not taking any chances tonight!" Grizzlor answered, while picking up the paste.
"What made you choose to think with your feet, and not your fists!? Are you scared, that I might scratch you!?" The Magicat asked.
"Just leave me alone, kitten!" The grizzly man roared.
"Kitten!!?" Sounds like Grizzlor wanted to get scratched.
The Magicat leapt onto the beast of a man, and they both rolled over, with The Magicat pinning him down afterwards.
"Gotcha. Now let's talk--" She ordered.
"Don't tell me what to do, kitten!" Grizzlor threw her off, and proceeded to run.
"Stop calling me that!!" The Magicat followed suit.
Grizzlor may have been fast, but he still couldn't outrun the hero of Brightmoon, who jumped onto him again.
But this time, before he could throw her off again, she dodged and countered.
She flipped over him, and kicked the back of his head, throwing off his balance. Giving her the chance to hit him again. This time, she hit him in the face, foot colliding with jaw.
He was out.
"I may be younger than you, but you do not refer to me as a child!" The Magicat exclaimed.
-
With Grizzlor unconscious, the Police were able to arrest him.
"Good work, Magicat. Did you learn anything about his motive?" Lieutenant Mermista asked.
"I tried. Grizzly's not the kind to rob and tell, though. Also, he hates me." The Magicat admitted.
"You have that effect on a lot of people."
"But you love me, right Mermista?" Magicat asked, with hope.
"I tolerate you." Mermista answered.
"Wow." The Magicat said in surprise. "That might be the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
With her job done, The Magicat headed over to F.E.A.S.T to get some answers.
-
Wrordak was busy writing, but a knock caught his attention.
"Catra! What can I do for you?" He asked.
"Sorry to bother you, Wrordak. I have a friend, Adora Grayskull, she's a reporter. She's doing a story about art imports, and she found this piece… And she wanted an expert opinion on it, and I know you have a degree--"
"And this might be the first time I get to use it." Wrordak interrupted.
"Let's see what you have."
Catra pulled the mask she took, from one of the masked goons.
"Interesting." Wrordak inspected the headwear. "Where did she find it?"
"Uh… I'm not sure. Why, what is it?" Catra asked.
"It seems to resemble the face of a monster. There's similarities to a skull, but not human. This mask was worn by the beasts of old." Wrordak told her.
"Beasts?"
"Men wore these to protect themselves against the monsters that lived in the Whispering Woods." Wrordak continued.
"Catra, that mask could be connected to dangerous people. Your friend might want to find a different story." He warned.
"You think she's in trouble?" Catra asked.
"I don't know." Wrordak sighed.
"Why take the risk?" He asked.
Catra decided to head to work, with more questions on her mind.
Why did those… Beasts want that file?
-
Back at the lab, Light Spinner was testing out the spell, with a volunteer. The spell had already been implemented into a gem, which is how they can be used by people who can't use magic.
"How does it work?" The volunteer asked, hesitantly.
"Just like a natural arm." Light Spinner simply replied.
"You think of what you want it to do, and…" She gestured to the cup in front of him.
An arm, constructed by magic, reached for the cup. And when it was in reach, he grasped onto it. It worked.
He was holding a cup, with his missing arm.
Both, Light Spinner, and Catra laughed with joy.
Their joy was shortlived, when the door opened. Men came in, to confiscate their equipment.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?" Catra approached one of the city workers.
"This site's been declared a safety hazard." They informed.
The men grabbed the equipment without care.
"Stop that right now! This is highly sensitive equipment." Light Spinner stopped on of the workers.
"That's it. I'm calling the Mayor's office directly." She threatened
"Little sister!" A voice called out.
It was Horde Prime. The Mayor of Brightmoon City.
"It is good to see you." The Mayor greeted in delightment.
"It's you." Light Spinner hissed.
"Mr. Prime, what --" Catra started.
"Oh please. How long have we known each other? It's Mr. Mayor." Horde Prime joked.
"It's Prime, little sister."
"Prime, what do you think you're doing?" Light Spinner questioned.
"The grant agreement you signed has strict safety provisions. This isn't your first violation." Horde Prime informed her.
"Those were excused --" Light Spinner told him.
"By me. We should have confiscated this equipment long ago." The Mayor admitted.
"But, but I've had a breakthrough --" Light Spinner defended. Gesturing to the amputee volunteer.
The Mayor shook his working arm. "Thank you for your service to these lands. These men will escort you to Hordecorp Robotics, where you'll receive the latest in prosthetics, no charge." He promised.
"This isn't about safety infractions, is it?" Light Spinner questioned.
"I'm trying to help you, Light Spinner. You're free to continue your work… in a secure environment."
"At Hordecorp."
"You were always the smartest woman in the room." The Mayor confessed.
"You haven't changed a bit." Light Spinner spat.
"Neither have you." The Mayor replied, before turning his head to Catra.
"Little sister, Hordak will be coming back from his trip soon. Perhaps you can finally start that business you were always talking about." Horde Prime considered. "This is opportunity knocking."
With that, they left. Catra, and Light Spinner had little to work with. Their progress had been, greatly set back.
"They didn't take everything. Maybe we can start over--" Catra hoped.
"Catra. There's no 'we'. Without the grant from the city, I can no longer pay you."
She was right. Catra had nothing to say about this. Things just don't go her way, and she was starting to think that, it never will.
"I need some time to think." Light Spinner said.
"If I were you… I'd look for a new job."
-
Catra decided to do her other job, protecting Brightmoon. The pay's non-existent, she meets a lot of people, and she's pretty good at it. It'll do for now.
As it turns out, Grizzlor's escaped. That's a new record. The Magicat decided to ruin his day for the second time. She found him robbing a bank, which is very cliché.
"Grizzlor! Haven't seen you since the last time I threw you in jail! When's that been? Five? Six hours?"
The Magicat quickly kicked him into the vault behind him. While he was dazed, she quickly closed the door, trapping bot of them. The best she could do is stall for time. The worst, make a mess out of everything.
"Listen, Grizzly. We're stuck in here for the foreseeable future, so…"
Grizzlor gave her no time to finish, and he slammed her through the vault door. Super durability or not, it still hurts very much.
"The future comes a lot faster these days, doesn't it?" The Magicat asked no one in particular.
"Listen kitty, I don't have time for games." Grizzlor growled in his grumpy tone.
"Let's make a deal. I'll let that slide, only if you surrender quietly." She bargained.
"Quiet is not in my vocabulary." Grizzlor said, while trying to hit her.
"I thought vocabulary wasn't in your vocabulary." The Magicat joked.
She had the advantage, seeing as he couldn't simply just run away this time. But that meant more property damage. Thank goodness she wasn't paying for it.
The Magicat ducked under his swings, and punched his gut, having little effect. Her kicks were harder, but she couldn't find an opening. When Grizzlor was able to find a blind spot, he didn't hesitate to send her flying.
The Magicat quickly got back up, and continued to fight. She wasn't gonna win this fight. Not unless she was resourceful. Right! Her new yarn thingies! Now that she thought of it, using yarn to restrain villains was dumb.
"Get a taste of this!" She threw the device onto him, entangling him in strings.
"That was easy."
The Magicat overestimated the use of her yarn trap. It was easy for him to get out.
"Why are you so difficult to work with!?" The Magicat exclaimed.
Grizzlor rammed into her, knocking her out of the way. When she got back up, he was gone.
"I hate it when that happens!"
-
"Well, that could have gone worse." The Magicat said.
After failing to put Grizzlor back in his cell, The Magicat called up Lieutenant Mermista, who gave her a lead on Lashor's men. Guess they were still up to no good. Beforehand, The Magicat was told that she would have backup.
Yes!
The Magicat went to the warehouse, where she found Lashor's men. She'd feel better if she had help.
But for now, she was going to have to deal with some goons. Seeing as how there was no one guarding the inside, and their backup won't come until later, The Magicat chose to beat everyone up.
She pounced onto a nameless goon, catching everyone's attention. "Goon inspection!"
The guard she jumped on was already unconscious, but that was just one out of two dozen.
"He failed! Is anyone next?"
She dodged incoming fire, and sliced the guard's gun, then kicked his head. The next one, she jumped over and tripped. She picked up another, and threw him to his fellow goon.
"Why do you guys even try? It's not like you're gonna get lucky!"
Slam!*
Someone snuck up on her.
"That doesn't count. You just gave me a bad headache!" The Magicat kicked him away, and proceeded to fight.
She ran to her closest target, and flipped him over. Then she dodged another round of fire, before giving the next guy a roundhouse kick. One of the guards closest to her tried to hit her, only to hit the guy behind her.
She threw a goon to the wall, knocking him out. Then she backflipped, kicking someone else.
"That's half of you down already, so I'd appreciate it if the rest of you surrendered!" The Magicat said.
She continued to slice their weapons, making them resort to their fists. Not that it'll do much.
The Magicat swung her fist, connecting with her oppenent's jaw, then she kick-flipped another guard. She heard someone approach her from behind, she swiftly kicked them away.
She grabbed onto someone, then she rolled back and threw him against the wall. And then she jumped onto someone's shoulders, spinning him around, then she twisted and kicked him into the ground.
The next guy, she pushed him onto his back, then she jumped and slammed into his body. Before a goon could punch her, she slid under him and wrapped her legs around his neck, then she pulled him over, and slammed him into the ground.
"You've obviously failed. If you weren't slacking off, you might have lasted longer!"
Blaring lights caught her attention. It was a Police car, her backup has arrived! She rarely partnered up with the Police, and every time she did, she made sure to be on their good side.
The Officer stepped out of the car, a man with graying hair, tied into a bun, and a beard. And a sorcerer? Ok, she'd better show her manners, 'cuz sorcerers were well respected amongst the Police.
"Not only is vigilantes trespassing and doing searches frowned upon, it's also illegal."
'You're already doing bad, Magicat.' She thought to herself.
"Well, uh… I was waiting for you?"
"It's fine, as long as we do this legally." The Officer held up a warrant.
"I like the sound of that. What's you're name?" The Magicat asked.
"Micah. And you?" Officer Micah replied.
"Uh…"
"Just messing with you. My daughter's a big fan." He told her.
"So. Do you mind if I scratch down that door?" The Magicat asked.
"Actually I do. Do you mind finding another way in?" Officer Micah said.
"That's fine with me."
The Magicat proceeded to head over the backside of the warehouse. Once she was there, she slipped into the vents, and open the doors from the inside. It was simple, she just overloaded the electric box with her magic.
Officer Micah walked in, with a look of surprise. "So, how much spells do you know?"
"Well, I don't use magic that much during work, but I know a couple spells." She answered.
"Work?" The Cop asked.
"Vigilantism's a job right?" The Magicat asked.
"Not really." He answered.
"Figures, I guess that's why I never got paid." She said.
"You were expecting money, for being a vigilante?" Officer Micah asked.
"Vigilante seems abased. I prefer Superhero, and no, I'd rather see smiles over money, but it definitely wouldn't hurt."
The both of them continued to investigate the warehouse, and found its contents to be very fishy. Pun intended. But what caught their attention was the masked men that arrived. The Beasts.
Both crime fighters chose to work together. The Magicat and Police Officer Micah! Defenders of Brightmoon City!
Being a talented sorcerer, Officer Micah was able to keep up with The Magicat. Either, he has a Runestone, or he's just very good with magic.
In the end, the Beasts decided to run. But The Magicat wasn't going to let them off the hook so easily.
She went on all fours, and chased after them. Micah was gonna have to find his own way.
The Beasts drove through the streets, with The Magicat following behind. When she saw her chance, she jumped onto the top of the truck, the Beast's reaction was to shoot at her, only to be thrown off.
Surprisingly, there was minimal damage. And it was best to keep it that way. And in order to do that, she had to stop the truck from hitting the bus ahead!
The Magicat swiftly moved near the tires, and used her claws to make them flat. And for good measure, she went to the front, and did her best to hold it back.
The truck ceased moving, just in time, as she was almost crushed between both vehicles. Stopping the truck was tiring enough for The Magicat to lose focus.
When a Beast goon attacked her, she didn't have enough time to react. Before he could hit her again-
Blam!*
-Officer Micah had blasted him away. The Cop walked towards The Magicat, and helped her up.
They were victorious!
-
While everything was being wrapped up, a certain blonde was trying to reach Officer Micah.
"Have you come to hear about how I bested the Beasts?"
Adora turned to find The Magicat, who was trying to stay out of sight.
"Beasts?" Adora asked.
"Those masked goons. Wrordak told me about the mask, and I came up with a name." The Magicat explained.
"Sounds like they're dangerous." Adora said.
"They are." The Magicat informed.
"I like a challenge."
The Magicat always hated this side of Adora. Then again, she liked it as much as she hated it.
"Is that why you went out with me?" She asked.
"Actually, I went out with you 'cause you were nice. The real challenge was handling your cooking." Adora joked.
"You wound me!" The Magicat exclaimed.
"Anyway, do you think you can get Officer Micah's attention?" Adora asked.
"I think he's married." The Magicat jested
"You know what I mean!"
The Magicat chuckled.
Micah was about to enter his car, only to be interrupted by a blonde, with a hair poof.
"Officer Micah? Adora Grayskull, Daily Frost." She greeted.
"No comment." Micah replied.
"Officer Micah, I know you told those reporters everything, but Adora's different."
Micah turned to The Magicat. "Is she?" He asked.
"I'd tell her what I know, but the Frost is not a big fan of mine."
Micah considered her words, and gave his answer. "Alright, Miss Adora. What do you wanna talk about?"
-
It was actually easy to write the fight scenes in this chapter. So what did you think? The only trouble I'm having is trying to figure out what to make different from the game, 'cause you know. Copyrights and stuff. If there's anything you want me to add to this story, I'll consider it, but I do have my own plans for later on.
I must warn you though, it's a limited time offer.
