Chapter Five
Progress
A week later, Catra attended the funeral of Officer Micah. She let down his daughter, his wife. She has barely gotten to know him, but what had happened still hurt.
It was Wrordak's fault. She just didn't understand it, Wrordak was one of the nicest people she's ever met. Why would he plan the bombing? Why did he do it?
She had no answers. She'll find out later, she had to help Glimmer. Catra walked up to her to give her, her condolences.
"I'm sorry for your loss." Catra said.
Glimmer looked up at her. "Do I know you?" She asked.
"I'm Catra. I was at City Hall when-- Look… I know you don't know me, but I just wanted to say--" Catra was interrupted.
"I know what you're going through." Glimmer muttered.
Catra didn't know how to reply to that.
"That's what you were gonna say, right? Or… 'It all gets easier with time.' Listen. I don't need your pity. Just leave me alone." Glimmer said.
"I was just trying to--" Catra tried to say.
"Trying to help. Well, you don't have to worry about that. I don't need it." Glimmer walked off without saying another word.
Catra couldn't help but blame herself for this. She should've known something bad was gonna happen, but she couldn't do anything to stop it.
Glimmer's mom walked up to Catra. "I'm sorry about that. I don't know what I'm gonna do with her."
Catra was gonna help her. She was going to stop the Beasts.
-
The Magicat tipped off to Mermista that Wrordak was the one behind the bombing, but without evidence, they couldn't do anything about it. She had to find some evidence herself if she was gonna stop him.
Thankfully she was able to track the same truck that left the construction site, and she found a couple Beast goons as well. They were gonna pay.
The Magicat charged at full speed, and drop kicked the closest one, knocking him out. Then she clawed another one, before jumping away from an incoming punch, then she flipped over him and kicked him to another guard.
A goon carrying a sword went straight for her, and started slashing. The Magicat dodged and kicked him, then she grappled onto him and threw him into the wall.
Someone tried sneaking up on her, but she did a backflip and slashed his back before kicking him down. Another guy tried hitting her, but she blocked and scratched his arm before kicking him in the head.
Another one tried rushing into her, but she slid under him then gave him a roundhouse kick to the head. The next guy tried punching her, she kept dodging towards another goon and when the first guy tried punching again, she jumped over the one behind her and kicked him into the first guy.
The Magicat wasn't gonna underestimate the Beasts anymore. The Magicat went into the hideout, and she found nothing that could lead back to Wrordak.
She swore that he wasn't gonna hurt anyone else. It won't happen again, not on her watch.
The Magicat was about to head out, when the unexpected happened. Some guys wearing armor were beating leftover Beasts. Before the situation could get worse, The Magicat stepped in.
"Hey! You're not playing by the rules!" The Magicat yelled.
The new guys turned their attention to her, but before the could do anything, they were knocked out.
"Because this isn't a game, kitty cat." Said the voice of a woman.
The Magicat looked in the direction of the voice, and saw a tall, muscular woman, with light purple skin, and white long hair tied into a ponytail. This was Huntara. Head of an international organization. She's really a big, scary mercenary.
"First, don't call me that. Second, what's someone as terrifying as you, doing here?" The Magicat asked.
"You don't look so terrified." Huntara retorted.
"Don't change the subject." The Magicat said in return.
Huntara's eyes narrowed. To be honest, she admired the vigilante's bravery. It reminded her of when she was young.
"The Mayor hired me to clean up this mess." Huntara said, truthfully.
Right. The Mayor. The Magicat saw him fleeing before the incident. She had other things to worry about.
"Well, let's get one thing straight, we aren't gonna have any problems?" She asked.
"As long as you stay out of my way. Otherwise, I won't show any mercy." Huntara answered.
The Magicat didn't realize how tense she was until she relaxed. She heard stories about Huntara's definition of mercy, and she still didn't want to be on the receiving end of it.
Even as she left, she couldn't believe she survived their encounter.
-
Catra went to F.E.A.S.T once she was finished, and went straight to Madam Razz.
"You doing okay, Granny?" Catra asked.
Madam Razz's face lit up with joy. "Madam Razz is doing just fine! But I could always use more help. Do you know anyone?" She asked.
"I do. Her name is Glimmer." Catra said.
Madam Razz's face twisted into a frown once she heard the name. "Ah, it is indeed, a terrible experience to lose someone you care so much about."
Catra could understand that. It didn't matter if she barely knew her parents. That couldn't make it hurt any less.
"I tried talking to her at the funeral. She's just having a hard time." Catra said.
"You want to help her, don't you kitten?" Madam Razz asked her.
"I think it'd be good for her, if she worked here. It certainly helped me out." Catra admitted.
"Are you sure it wasn't just to see Adora?" Madam Razz questioned.
"Of course it wasn't!" Catra whined. She always hated when Razz would do this.
Adora was always a nice girl. She would come here sometimes, helping those who needed it. When they were little, they would sometimes play hide and seek here, since most places didn't have enough good hiding spaces. Wrordak would smile when he saw them playing around.
Right. Catra didn't want to believe he could do something as terrible as the incident. A man as good as he was, couldn't possibly commit such acts… but he did. She didn't want it to be him. He was like the father she never had. When she was little, he would guide her to Madam Razz, whenever she was lost.
He would play games with her, when there was no one else to play with. He was always nice to her. To everybody. But that day, when she realized what he had done… she'd never felt so betrayed.
"Have you heard anything from Wrordak, since he left?" Catra asked, trying not to sound like she knew anything about what she saw.
"I haven't. He must be working so hard, but Madam Razz is sure he'll make some time to talk." The old lady answered.
Catra couldn't bare to tell her. It's better that she didn't know.
"I better get to work. I'll see you later, Granny." Catra told her, before she walked out.
-
Catra was back at work. It had been a while, but Light Spinner told her that she managed to get the funds to continue their project. She also said that she had improved on it since last time!
But when they started testing, Catra couldn't believe what she saw. Instead of the usual magical arm, Light Spinner's hair raised up, and shadows formed around her. Tendrils waving around in the air, as if they were ready to lash out.
The had frightened Catra. This kind of magic was unknown, and dangerous. Before she knew it, Light Spinner started screaming in pain. She fell down to her knees, as the shadows disappeared.
"Light Spinner! What's happening!?" Catra yelled as she caught her.
"It's more unstable than I thought. I haven't tested it before now, and I've yet to work out the kinks." Light Spinner explained.
"I've never seen anything like that before. Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Catra asked. It was no surprise that she was apprehensive about the spell.
"If it weren't for Prime, I wouldn't have had to resort to this. Even so, it's thanks to him that I've made such a breakthrough. The potential for this spell is virtually limitless." Light Spinner told her.
"I mean, if an octopus is so efficient with its tentacles, how awesome would a human be?" Catra joked.
"I would appreciate it, if you took this seriously, Catra." Light Spinner said, dryly.
"Sorry."
"Besides, I don't care much for seafood." Light Spinner continued.
Catra frowned at this. "Ok, now you're just trying to get on my nerves."
Light Spinner recomposed herself before changing the subject. "If you don't mind, but I have been wondering about your history with the Mayor."
The Mayor. There was always something off about him. She was pretty sure everyone who worked with him felt the same. And on that day, he knew something was gonna happen, but he didn't warn anyone.
"Me and Adora were friends with his brother, Hordak. He used to meet with Wrordak at the shelter." Catra said. "After Hordak introduced us, he acted like we were family and called us 'little sisters'. It still freaks me out."
"I think I'm actually starting to feel sorry for you." Light Spinner joked.
"If you keep acting like this, I think I might rethink my career choices." Catra deadpanned.
"In all seriousness, we must get back to work. Everything depends on this spell." Light Spinner reminded Catra.
"Then let's get to it!" Catra beamed.
-
It took a while, but Catra managed to figure out the problem, which she decided to fix as soon as possible.
"The spell you used earlier, it's actually good for prosthetics. You've really put a lot of thought into it! The problem was that it's currently harmful to the human body, so I came up with an alternative solution." When Catra was finished, she presented her work to Light Spinner.
Her eyes widened, staring at the red jewel that was handed to her. "Of course! The human body does not react well to the spell's power, but if we used this to inhibit the effects of the spell, we could eliminate its drawbacks!" She exclaimed.
"Well, do you wanna give it a go?" Catra asked.
Light Spinner didn't need to be told twice. She held the gem and cast the spell, forming the tendrils once again. This time, Light Spinner didn't feel pain. She felt power.
-
After work, Catra got a text from Adora, asking to meet up at her place. Catra didn't hesitate to do so. When she arrived, she knocked on the door, and waited for Adora to answer.
Adora opened the door and pulled Catra inside. "Catra! You're not gonna believe what happened."
Catra wasn't expecting such a greeting. "Let me guess, you went snooping?" She asked.
"How did you know!?" Adora exclaimed.
"Adora, I know you better than anyone. We practically grew up together, remember?" Catra asked.
"Yeah, I remember. Listen, I found something you're gonna want to hear. The Beasts made a deal with some people, for an armored truck." Adora told her.
"What for?" Catra questioned.
"I don't know, but they're probably gonna use it on their next attack." Adora said.
"Adora, look, if you're gonna keep doing stuff like this, you should be prepared. I could teach you the invisibility spell." Catra offered.
"Really? Why's that?" Adora asked.
"Because, you're so much better at using magic than me." Catra told her.
"But you're the one making spells!" Adora exclaimed.
"That's not what I meant. I meant, you have more magic than anyone I know. I don't know how, but you are gifted in magic." Catra explained.
"Alright. So, are you gonna teach me?" Adora asked her.
"Yes, but I better not catch you using it when you shouldn't." Catra warned.
Adora grinned at her. "Wouldn't that be what the invisibility spell is for?"
"I'm serious!" Catra scowled, hoping for Adora to stop.
"Ok!" Adora giggled.
Catra groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I swear, you are the worst."
"So I was thinking… what if we teamed up?" Adora asked her.
"Adora, I told you, you're gifted at magic, but not that gifted." Catra replied.
"That's not what I meant, Catra."
Catra thought about what she meant. Adora always wanted to help people, it didn't matter how she wanted to help them. But Catra didn't want to put her in danger. She was so lost in thought, she didn't hear the alarm on her phone.
"Hey, Catra! Time to suit up!" Adora told her.
Catra snapped out of her head, and put her suit on. She was about to head out, before Adora stopped her.
"Have I ever told you, I love the new suit?" She asked.
Catra was thankful that her mask covered her face, she didn't care that Adora didn't need to see her blush to know that she was.
"S-shut up!" The Magicat jumped out of the window, heading towards the crime taking place.
