? 1

She thinks that she can avoid us. But she has done far too much. She can say she has left her darkness behind, but no one who was once as horrible as she can truly be clensed of their evil. She cannot escape our justice.

? 2

Yes, and she continues to partake in violence, in the name of good. Like anyone who were truly reformed as she claims to be would still choose to raise a sword. No one who so egregiously opposes peace can be allowed to go unpunished.

? 3

She must be delt with. The true order of good must be restored. Such an unbalance cannot go on unchecked. For this to take place there is only one solution.

? 2

And what of her companion?

? 3

Anyone who would ally with such a vile person, must themselves be unredeamable.

? 1

Then if possible we should deal with that one as well.

? 3

Yes but remember who takes priority. That being said, I believe that we all know on what must happen next then.

? 1

Yes.

? 2

Agreed.

? 3

Very well then. It will be done.

? 1, ? 2, ? 3

Xena must be eliminated.

The morning sun hung in the sky as Gabrielle handed Xena the last folded up blanket to be packed away before they headed back out on the road.

GABRIELLE

You know I still don't get why we always have to get up so early.

XENA

It's not that early, I let you sleep in today.

GABRIELLE

You call this sleeping in?

XENA

Actually yes.

GABRIELLE

Of course you do.

XENA

Maybe you wouldn't mind getting up at this time if you went to bed earlier.

GABRIELLE

I was, but a certain someone kept me up longer than I had planned.

Xena raised an eyebrow.

XENA

You weren't complaining about that last night.

Gabrielle smirked as she shook her head. With everything picked up, they hopped on Argo and rode off. After a while Xena and Gabrielle came to a large field, Xena suddenly had Argo stop.

GABRIELLE

What's wrong?

XENA

Someone's been following us for a while now.

GABRIELLE

Any idea who?

XENA

No, but I intend to find out. Stay here.

Xena got down from Argo and drew her sword. She walked a little back from the way they came. Gabrielle got down from Argo as she watched Xena.

GABRIELLE

Xena?

Xena motioned for Gabrielle to stay put. After taking a moment to inspect their surroundings, Xena walked over to some large rocks. She pointed her sword.

XENA

Alright, I know you're back there. Make it easy on yourself and come out.

A young man slowly walked out from behind the rocks holding up his hands.

YOUNG MAN

Please don't hurt me.

XENA

Why are you following us?

YOUNG MAN

I was told to find you. You are Xena aren't you?

XENA

Yes.

GABRIELLE

If you needed to find Xena, why not just ask, instead of practically stalking us?

Xena gave Gabrielle a slightly annoyed look as Gabrielle walked up beside her for not staying back.

YOUNG MAN

Sorry, I wasn't sure if I should just approach you. You know giving your reputation... no offense.

XENA

Well you're here now, so who sent you?

The young man gave her a nervous look.

YOUNG MAN

Well you see I can't really tell you that. I'm sorry please don't hurt me.

Both Xena and Gabrielle looked at each other, slightly confused. Gabrielle gave the young man a gentle smile.

GABRIELLE

Just take it easy. No one's gonna hurt you, I promise.

XENA

(low voice, only Gabrielle could hear) Well.

Gabrielle nudged her a little.

GABRIELLE

Now what can you tell us.

YOUNG MAN

I was sent to give you a message.

XENA

I'm listening.

The young man explained that he was instructed to tell Xena that she and Gabrielle were invited to Athens for an extremely important meeting.

XENA

I'm assuming that whoever sent you is who I would be meeting.

YOUNG MAN

Yes.

XENA

And I don't suppose you can tell me what this meeting is about.

YOUNG MAN

No. I'm sorry. I actually don't know that. But I was told that your presence was of the utmost importance. And that many lives may be at stake.

Xena thought for a moment. It seemed odd that whoever was requesting to see her wanted to remain anonymous. It could be an enemy trying to lure her into a trap. But I could also be a case of them needing to keep their identity hidden for their own safety and that's why they sent for her in the first place. Plus if what the young man had just said was true, and people were in serious danger, Xena couldn't just ignore this.

XENA

Fine. We'll head there immediately. You're welcome to travel with us back.

YOUNG MAN

Thank you, but I'm actually not going back to Athens just yet. So this will be where we part ways.

The young man thanked Xena and Gabrielle for accepting the meeting request and left.

GABRIELLE

So I guess we're going to Athens.

XENA

Seems that way. Come on let's get moving. I wanna find out what this is all about.

Xena and Gabrielle got back on Argo and headed for Athens. Both of them unaware of the true danger that they would soon find themselves in.

Xena and Gabrielle were on the road in route to Athens. Trying to figure out who could've sent for Xena.

GABRIELLE

Do you know anyone in Athens.

XENA

Probably. But no one in particular comes to mind. It could be that they just happen to be there. Or someone who heard about me.

GABRIELLE

I wonder what they want. It seems odd that they didn't tell their messenger.

XENA

It could just be very sensitive information. Though that paired with the fact that they chose to keep their identity hidden makes this whole thing seem very suspicious.

GABRIELLE

You think it's a trap don't you?

XENA

Something like that.

GABRIELLE

Then why are we still going?

XENA

I wanna find out who's behind this. Not to mention if it is a trap, it's not a very good one. So either their just stupid or there's something else going on here.

They continued on. As they came over the horizon, the city of Athens could be seen in the distance. Being almost there Xena had Argo pick up a little speed. She wanted to find out what all the secrecy was about. As they galloped closer to the city, a huge bolt of lightning crashed to the ground just a few feet in front of them. Xena quickly halted Argo.

GABRIELLE

What was that?!

She looked up, checking for rain clouds. But the sky was clear. Suddenly another bolt crashed down near them.

GABRIELLE

Did we somehow anger Zeus or something?

XENA

No I don't think this is his doing.

GABRIELLE

What makes you think that?

XENA

Just a feeling. If what I'm thinking is right, then this is connected to the mysterious meeting I'm supposed to attend. And that doesn't seem like Zeus.

Another lightning bolt struck the ground right next to them.

XENA

But someone is definitely trying to send a message. Hold on tight.

Xena had Argo get going. As they rode the lightning became more frequent. Striking all around them. Somehow they managed to avoid getting hit. But as the city gates came into sight multiple bolts rained down, they seemed to form almost large wall of lightning in front of them, blocking their path. Leaving them with no choice but to stop.

XENA

Looks like someone doesn't want us getting to Athens.

After a few moments the lightning stopped and the lightning wall faded away. As it did Xena and Gabrielle saw what seemed to be three women standing there in front of them.

GABRIELLE

(Whisper) Who are they?

XENA

(Whisper) Not sure.

? 1, ? 2, ? 3

Hello Xena. Gabrielle.

Both Xena and Gabrielle dismounted Argo.

XENA

If you wanted my attention there are easier ways to do it.

? 1

Your reputation among the God's would prove otherwise. It's well known that you don't respect us.

XENA

It's not that, I just don't think we need to relay on the God's to live our lives. But I doubt my views on the God's are what brought you here.

? 2

You're correct Xena.

? 3

We have far more pressing matters to deal with you.

GABRIELLE

They're God's? I wonder why we don't recognize them.

XENA

Must not be that popular.

? 1

We are known by a great many. Though it doesn't surprise us that people such as you would not know of us.

XENA

Is that so? Then how 'bout you enlighten us. Just who are the three of you?

? 1

I am Dike, the Goddess of justice. Something you would know nothing about Xena.

? 2

I am Eirene, and I am the Goddess of peace. The very thing that you seem to oppse so whole heartedly.

? 3

And I am Eunomia, goddess of good order. Your very being upsets the balance of good and order. Together we are the Horae.

Gabrielle stepped forward.

GABRIELLE

You know for God's you're really uninformed. Xena's good now. She's working hard to try to right her wrongs and make up for what she did. She's fights for justice and good. And while she does technically participate in violence, I think doing that in the name of what's right should be okay. She fights for those who can't and stops far more violent people from hurting others.

DIKE, EIRENE, EUNOMIA

Silence!

The goddesses voices boomed and echoed through the area. Feeling uneasy, Gabrielle slowly backed up.

EIRENE

You are no better Gabrielle.

XENA

Now wait just a minute. How can you even say something like that?

DIKE

Anyone who would willingly ally themselves with the likes of you must mean that they themselves are either evil or are willing to just accept evil. Either way people like her are guilty of opposing justice, peace and good order all the same.

XENA

So it's guilt by association. That hardly seems fair. And seems to go against the very things that you claim to stand for.

DIKE, EIRENE, EUNOMIA

We said Silence!

DIKE

Who are you to question the Horae. You Xena, who has committed numerous atrocities.

EUNOMIA

You do not get to decide what is good and just. Though you may have tried to escape punishment before, now your time has come.

EIRENE

You will pay for your sins. Along with Gabrielle, who continues to stand by and aid you. So to restore justice, order and peace you both shall be eliminated.

With that all three of the Horae began to ready attacks. Xena stood ready to fight.

XENA

I thought one of you were all about peace.

EIRENE

I do not need to explain myself to a mortal. Especially one such as yourself.

XENA

So much for practicing what you preach.

The goddesses began unleashing their godly powes. Xena blocked and dodged the incoming attacks. But knowing that they were out numbered, out matched and out in the open with no cover. Everything about their situation had the odds stacked against them. So Xena quickly decided that a tactical retreat was the best option for the moment. At least until she could come up with a plan to fight back.

XENA

Run Gabrielle. We can't fight them like this.

Xena and Gabrielle began fleeing from the Horae. Xena figured if they could get to Argo, they would have a better chance of escape. She whistled for her trusty mare.

THE HORAE

There is no escape. Accept your punishment and pay for all your misdeeds.

The Horae began to make a loud noise. It was like an echoing omm sound. The sound was so loud, that both Xena and Gabrielle were forced to stop in their tracks. They covered their ears, trying to drowned out the sound. But it was no use. The sound was so overwhelming that it caused them to drop to their knees. After a few moments it stopped. When it did Xena and Gabrielle looked back at the Horae. As they did a bright light radiated from them.

THE HORAE

Accept your fate. For this was made from your own doing. You have chosen your actions, now you must suffer the consequences.

With those words the light intensified. Causing Xena and Gabrielle to have to shut and shield their eyes. Moments later the light faded and they opened their eyes. But what they saw was something that they were not expecting. Still on the ground, they looked around.

GABRIELLE

Xena, where are we?

As Xena scanned the area, she saw that it looked like some sort of swamp-like wasteland. Far from the environment that they had just been in. The whole area looked completely unfamiliar.

XENA

I have no idea.

Xena and gabrielle stood looking around the strange, foreign area that they had found themselves in. Having no clue where they were.

GABRIELLE

Did those Gods do this?

XENA

Seems like like it.

Xena tried to get a sense of where they were, but she had never seen an area like they currently found themselves.

XENA

Come on, let's find a way out of here. But stay close, we don't know what we're dealing with.

Xena lead the way as she and Gabrielle began moving through the swamp-like wasteland. Xena kept her sword ready, sensing the dangerous atmosphere around them. As they walked they could hear the sounds of various creatures. Though they didn't sound like normal animals.

GABRIELLE

Even the sounds here are unfamiliar. What is this place. Everything is so strange.

As they continued, Xena spotted someone up ahead. They were sitting on a large tree stump. They got closer and then Xena recognized that it was one of the Goddesses that had sent them there. Xena scowled as she stormed up to her, with Gabrielle following close behind.

XENA

Alright what do you do? Where are we?

EIRENE

So aggressive. Then again I'm not surprised. You've always been temperamental.

XENA

Spare me the lectures and answer my questions.

The goddess signed as she picked up a small creature and began to pet it. It looked like a strange lizard type thing. Neither Xena or Gabrielle had seen anything like it before.

EIRENE

Do you know what this is?

XENA

Don't change the subject.

EIRENE

These creatures live here, along with many others. Of course this one here is just a young one. The fully grown adults are far bigger. And much more aggressive. You actually have quite a bit in common with them Xena.

Xena was beginning to lose her patience with the goddess going on. Eirene gently put the creature down and it scurried off. Finally she focused her attention on Xena and Gabrielle.

EIRENE

Well I suppose I should fill you in on what exactly is going on. That is why I'm here after all. Now where should I start?

Eirene quietly talked to herself as she thought. Xena crossed her arms as she and Gabrielle waited for the goddess to get to the point. She seemed to be going over everything that had happened. Xena and Gabrielle looked at each other, noticing that Eirene seemed to be either a bit neurotic, slightly dim or both.

GABRIELLE

(Whisper) I wounder if all the gods are such characters or if it just happens to be the ones that we encounter.

XENA

(Whisper/Sarcasm) Who knows. Either way I guess we must just be lucky.

Finally Eirene came to the present.

EIRENE

Okay, so to start I should tell you where we are.

Eirene stood up and motioned all around them.

EIRENE

Welcome ladies to the place we like to call the Abyss.

XENA

So are we still in the normal world or is this somewhere else entirely, cut off from everything we know.

EIRENE

I suppose it's a little bit of both. We are still in the regular world. However this place is a cut off secluded area. This is a place reserved for people like you, to punish them for all the evil they've done. But it's also a haven for creatures deemed to dangerous to be around the average person. With the magic barrier surrounding this place, nothing can get in or out without our aid. So it's a two birds, one stone scenario. It serves as both paradise and a prison.

GABRIELLE

(Sarcasm) Lovely. If this is a paradise I'd hate to see your version of some place awful.

XENA

(Sarcasm) So is there a reason why you've decided to show up, or did you just come to chat and do some sight seeing?

EIRENE

Well aren't you two the snarky pair. But I guess if you don't want to know how you can escape from here, I'll just be on my way then.

Eirene raised her hand preparing to dissappear.

GABRIELLE

Wait a minute what do you mean by how we can escape?

EIRENE

I see I caught your attention with that, didn't I?

The goddesses lowered her hand and smiled.

EIRENE

You see we, the Horae are fair, just and loving God's.

Xena rolled her eyes at the statement. If anything theses God's have already shown that they were anything but. However if it would give her and Gabrielle a chance to get out of there, she decided it would be better to hear Eirene out.

EIRENE

We have decided that instead of simply killing you, we would give you a chance.

GABRIELLE

A chance at what?

EIRENE

Life.

XENA

And what exactly does that mean?

EIRENE

Though this is a place cut off from the normal world, we have made a special little spot somewhere in Abyss just for you. And if you can somehow find and make it to that spot, you will be brought back to the world you know. And if you should escape, we will leave you be. You will be free to go on with your lives and no longer need to fear our judgment.

XENA

Why do this? If you truly believe that we're evil, why not just kill us and get it over with? Instead of giving us a way to escape.

EIRENE

Always with the violence and killing. I would think you'd be thankful for the option of survival in this scenario.

Sensing that Eirene was becoming slightly agitated with Xena, Gabrielle quickly spoke up to try and defuse the situation.

GABRIELLE

We are. Thank you.

EIRENE

Well at least one of you seems to have have some good sense. Very well, I'll leave you to get going than. We'll be watching you and checking in periodically. You know you used to be such a nice girl Gabrielle. It really is a shame that you allowed yourself to be corrupted by someone like Xena. Anyway, good luck. You're gonna need it.

With that warning Eirene, the Goddess of peace disappeared. Leaving Xena and Gabrielle to process what they were just told.

GABRIELLE

You know I'm not sure which one of us should be more insulted by that last part.

XENA

I guess we should get going. If what Eirene said is true, then we need to find that exit.

GABRIELLE

How are we supposed to even begin to know where to look?

XENA

Don't know. But just standing out in the open like this isn't a good idea. Apparently this place is full of dangerous creatures that we know nothing about. So we need to find a relatively safe place to get our barrings and figure out what to do next. Plus it looks like it'll be getting dark soon. The last thing we need right now is to be stumbling around an unfamiliar swamp filled with vicious creatures in the dark.

GABRIELLE

Good point. I'd rather not become some monsters dinner.

So Xena and Gabrielle set out to find shelter for the night. They made sure to stay close together, getting separated right now would certainly make things far more dangerous for them. What ever happened Xena was determined to reach the exit of the Abyss. If it were just her she wouldn't have been as concerned. But once again her past mistakes have put Gabrielle in the crossfire too. But she couldn't think about that right now. Xena had to focus on makng their way through this hellscape. And getting both of them out of the Abyss before it was too late.

The night began to fall as Xena and Gabrielle ventured through the swamp-like place now known as the Abyss. They searched for some sort of shelter for the night. Due to the creatures that were prowling around sleeping outside wasn't an option. Fortunately they had a bit of luck and found a nearby cave. They cautiously ventured inside. Upon inspection they determined that the cave was vacant. So once they found it was a decently safe spot, they got a fire going and made their camp there for the night. They sat beside the campfire as Xena tried to think of an easier way to find a way out other than just wondering around, hoping to stumble across the exit. As she thought, Xena heard a low growing sound. She quickly grabbed her sword, preparing for a fight.

GABRIELLE

What's wrong?

XENA

I don't think we're alone in here. I just heard something growl.

GABRIELLE

I didn't hear anything.

Xena motioned for Gabrielle to be quiet. She then listened and heard it again.

XENA

It's close.

As they listened and heard the sound yet again, Gabrielle sighed as she realized what Xena had heard.

GABRIELLE

Xena I don't think you need your sword right now.

Xena looked at her with a curious expression on her face.

GABRIELLE

That noise was just me. I haven't eaten anything since this morning.

Xena lowered her weapon as they both had a little laugh. Though now that Gabrielle had mentioned it, Xena was getting hungry too.

XENA

Stay here, I'll go see if I can find us something to eat.

GABRIELLE

Is it even safe for us to eat anything here?

XENA

Only one way to find out.

Xena left the cave to try and get them some food. She kept her sword ready as she looked around. On her search Xena came across one of the Goddesses. She cautiously approached her. The goddess Dike noticed that she was alone.

DIKE

Hello Xena. Did you decide that Gabrielle was dead weight and try to make it out on your own.

Xena scowled at the implication that she would just abandon Gabrielle.

XENA

I'm looking for something we can eat. Or is there anything even eateble here at all?

DIKE

Of course there is. It wouldn't really be fair if we didn't give you the fuel you need to attempt your escape now would it.

XENA

(Sarcasm) Oh now you're all about fairness.

DIKE

I think we've been more than fair. That's why you're here and not already dead.

Xena wasn't about to waste her time on trying to make the same argument on Gabrielle's behalf as she did before. She knew that it wouldn't change the Goddesses minds. Instead she just focused on her current mission, finding herself and Gabrielle food.

XENA

You said that you left us the fuel we need.

DIKE

Well it's not as much as we left you food. More like allowed you the option to get your own.

XENA

What do you mean?

DIKE

Just look around you. I'm certain that you've noticed all the creatures that roam around in here.

XENA

Is it actually safe for us too eat them?

DIKE

Indeed. They have no different nutritional value than your standard livestock or wild game that you would normally consume.

XENA

Well that's good to know. At least we won't starve.

Dike chuckled. Xena looked at her, wondering what the goddess found so funny.

DIKE

I simply said it was safe to eat the creatures here. I never said it was safe to try and hunt them. As I'm sure you're aware by now, the creatures are quite aggressive. So actually taking them down is far easier said than done. You're less likely to get a meal than to become one yourselves.

Xena scowled as she began to walk away.

XENA

Just you watch.

Xena left the goddess and began looking for something that she could take down for some food. She began scouting for something that didn't look too difficult to kill. As Xena searched it began to rain..

XENA

(Sarcasm/ thinking to herself) Anything to make this more difficult.

She came across a lone creature that was taking a drink from a small stream. Xena stealthily hid behind some bushes as she tested the water, making sure it was also safe for her and Gabrielle to drink. It was, so she quickly gathered them some water. Then she focused on the creature. It looked like a large cat-like beast. But it had long fangs, horns on its head and large spikes that ran down its back. It looked quite vicious, but Xena didn't see anything else around at the moment. And she needed to get back to Gabrielle soon. So it was this or nothing. Xena readied her chakrum, taking aim for the creature.

XENA

(quietly talking) Here kitty, kitty.

Xena launched her chakrum at the beast. The weapon struck it on one of it's legs. The creature roared as Xena's chakrum returned to her. After the initial shock from the strike wore off the beast began searching for what had attacked it. With the creature now alert, Xena couldn't just change in to finish it off. So she threw her chakrum again. However this time the creature dodged it.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) That things fast.

Xena saw the creature begin to sniff at the air. It was looking for its attacker. Xena realized the danger she was in and began to quietly back away. But the beast had locked on to an unfamiliar scent and identified it's location. The creature beared it's teeth as it growled, walking towards the bushes that Xena was crouched behind. It had found her. Xena knew that she had no choice but to fight it. She slowly stood up and readied her sword.

XENA

Come and get it.

The creature roared as it raced towards Xena. As it got closer it lunged at her. Xena was barely able to dodge it. The creature was even faster than she had initially thought. Just as she turned to face it again the beast was already in midair, coming at her. She moved just enough to avoid being pounced on, but the beast claws caught her. Leaving a large gash in Xena's arm.

XENA

Gah!

Xena quickly backed off slightly. But the creature lunged at her again. Xena went to dodge again, but lost her footing on the slick ground under her. She fell back as the vicious creature pounced on her. It began scratching at Xena, it's claws ripping open her skin. as she tried to get it off of her, while trying to keep it from bitting her. She struggled against the beast. Finally Xena managed to grab a handful of fur on it's head. She held the creature back enough for her to free her sword hand. Then Xena drove her blade deep into the beast neck. The creature stopped it's attack as it struggled and gasped for breath. Moments later it was dead. Xena pushed the creature off of her and sat up. She took a moment to calm herself a little. She looked down seeing that she was covered in blood. Xena wasn't sure how much of it was the creature's and how much was hers. She slowly stood up, put her weapons away and put the creature on her back as she made her way back to the cave where she had left Gabrielle. Though given her injuries and having to carry a large carcass it would be a much slower walk back to the cave. Xena just hoped that Gabrielle was still safe. Because as she had just learned, this place wasn't just dangerous, if they weren't careful it could very well be deadly for the both of them.

Gabrielle was sitting on a rock near the caves entrance as she watched for Xena to return.

GABRIELLE

(Thinking to herself) Xena's been gone for a while, I hope She's okay. Maybe I should go look for her.

Gabrielle got up and grabbed her staff.

XENA

Going somewhere?

Gabrielle turned around and saw Xena walking into the cave.

GABRIELLE

Well now that you're back no. What took so long? I was getting worried. I thought...

Gabrielle stopped when she saw all the blood that practically covered Xena. She rushed over to Xena.

GABRIELLE

God's Xena.

Xena could see Gabrielle's concern as she put the creature down.

XENA

Don't worry it's not as bad as it looks. A lot of it's not mine.

She smiled as she winsed a little bit. Trying not to worry Gabrielle too much.

GABRIELLE

Well that means that some of it is.

Xena sat down as Gabrielle grabbed some cloth, water and bandages. After washing off all the blood and bandaging Xena's wounds, they prepared their food and ate. Xena informed Gabrielle that according to the goddesses the creatures were safe to eat. Afterwards Xena removed her wet clothes and layed them out to dry. Then she got under the covers that Gabrielle had set up while she was out. Gabrielle was already settled in herself. They layed there in the soft glow of the fading campfire. Gabrielle rested her head on Xena's shoulder.

GABRIELLE

We really need to find a way out of here. If only one of the creatures here managed to do that much damage to you, then what happens if we encounter more than one. Or something more dangerous than that. Or if we get separated, I...

Xena gently put her finger on Gabrielle's lips.

XENA

Shhh. Don't worry we'll get out of this. We've been in plenty of bad situations before. We'll be alright.

Gabrielle turned to face Xena.

GABRIELLE

But what about those Gods. Xena with everything we're dealing with here, I don't get how you can be so calm.

XENA

I'm not calm, I'm just not panicking.

GABRIELLE

I fail to see the difference here.

XENA

Panicking makes it more difficult to think and react. And in a situation like this that can be all the difference between weither we survive or not.

GABRIELLE

Oh I think I get it. Then how do you manage to not panic?

Xena shrugged.

XENA

My experience.

GABRIELLE

Well that's great. But unlike you I'm not a hardened warrior. I mean sure since I've been with you I've seen my fair share of difficult things. But I don't think I could ever get used to something like this.

XENA

I think that's probably a good thing. Once things like this stop affecting you is when you really should worry. It's not a matter of not being afraid, it's how you react to that fear. That's what's important.

Xena held Gabrielle close.

XENA

Well make it out of here. I won't let anything happen to you, I promise.

Gabrielle smiled a little. Whenever she was feeling upset or uneasy about things, Xena always seemed to know how to make her feel better. Xena sighed to herself as she thought about how exactly they were going to escape from the Abyss. And how because of her, Gabrielle was yet again in an extremely dangerous situation. Gabrielle could see Xena was deep in thought.

GABRIELLE

You know you really should take your own advice.

XENA

What are you talking about?

GABRIELLE

Come on Xena, like I can't tell when you're worried about something by now. I know you all too well. You're blaming yourself for me getting dragged into another dangerous situation aren't you? But I know full well what being with you means. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Xena sat up.

XENA

How many times are you gonna have to suffer for the things I've done. You had nothing to do with my awful past. And yet you're here being punished as if it were your doing.

Gabrielle sat up too.

GABRIELLE

Those Gods put us here, not you.

XENA

My actions are what really put us here.

Gabrielle leaned her head on Xena's shoulder.

GABRIELLE

Then you're actions are what will get us out.

XENA

Yes they will and I'll make sure of it.

Xena gently stroked Gabrielle's hair as she lightly kissed the top of her head. Gabrielle looked at Xena and smiled.

GABRIELLE

I know you will.

Gabrielle kissed Xena.

XENA

What was that for?

GABRIELLE

I thought it might make feel better. And because I love you.

XENA

(Joking) You know I can think of other things that would make me feel better too.

Gabrielle laughed a little.

GABRIELLE

(sly tone) Hmm and I wonder what exactly might that be.

Gabrielle kissed Xena again. This time with a bit more passion. Xena had only been joking at first, but that kiss began to stir her desire. They passionately kissed. As their desire for one another built, they quickly stripped away their clothes. Afterwards Gabrielle layed back as Xena leaned down and kissed her. Xena's hands slowly traced down Gabrielle's body as she pulled back from the kiss. She smiled down at Gabrielle as she got up to her knees. She positioned herself agienst Gabrielle, taking one of Gabrielle's legs and put it over her shoulder. Xena began to slowly thrust herself against Gabrielle. They both moaned as they felt their pleasure began to build. After a bit Xena began to feel herself getting closer to her climax. She began to move faster. Pushing harder against Gabrielle. Gabrielle grasped the blanket under her as Xena continued moving. She too could feel her own orgasism building. The small cave was soon filled with their cries of extacy as Xena and Gabrielle both found themselves on the edge of release. Xena thrust hard once more and then she felt herself hit her climax. She let out a blissful moan as her orgasism overtook her. After taking a moment to recover, Xena moved back from Gabrielle slightly. Xena smiled at her as she took her hand began rubbing her finger against Gabrielle's most sensitive spot, knowing that Gabrielle hadn't finished yet. Though it didn't take long before Gabrielle could feel himself ready to hit her own climax. Xena spead up, knowing that Gabrielle was close. She continued as Gabrielle rocked her hips against Xena's hand. Until finally she arched her back as a powerful orgasism hit her. Gabrielle cried out in sheer extacy as Xena began to slow down, allowing Gabrielle to ride out the waves of pleasure as they crashed into her. Afterwards Xena layed down next to Gabrielle and covered the two of them with another blanket. She gently kissed Gabrielle as she smiled at her.

GABRIELLE

(Joking) I take it that cheared you up a bit.

XENA

(Joking) You always do find a way to do it.

GABRIELLE

(Joking) Well it that's all it takes...

They both laughed a little. Then the reality of their situation returned to Xena.

XENA

We should go to bed soon. Who knows what we'll be facing when we head back out tomorrow.

Gabrielle agreed as she curled up close next to Xena, as Xena put her arm around her. They got comfortable and began to drift off, when Xena heard another growl.

XENA

Was that your stomach again.

GABRIELLE

No.

XENA

Well so much for getting some sleep.

Xena got up and got dressed. She told Gabrielle to try and get some rest. Saying that there was no need for both of them to go without sleep. At least one of them should get some rest. After some convincing, Gabrielle reluctantly gave in and went to sleep. Meanwhile Xena stayed up all night, keeping watch for anything hostle that might try and attack them. After the long, sleepless night for Xena, morning came. She woke up Gabrielle. After packing up, Xena and Gabrielle headed back out in search of the way out of the Abyss. But little did they know that their journey was only going to become even more difficult than they had already thought.

A thick fog set in as Xena and Gabrielle walked through the swamp. As they carried on, they came to a body of water. With no land in sight connecting to the other side, there was no choice but to go through it. Gabrielle stood at the Watters edge and looked down into the murky water.

GABRIELLE

We don't really have to go through this do we?

XENA

Looks like it.

Xena grabbed Gabrielle's staff and drove it down into the water.

GABRIELLE

Hey! What are you doing?!

XENA

Checking how deep the water is.

GABRIELLE

Well you could've at least asked first.

Xena pulled the staff back out and handed it back to Gabrielle.

XENA

Okay we should be able to walk through this. Just keep an eye out, who knows what's swimming around down there.

They carefully began making their way into the water. It came up to a little past Xena's knees. As they walked up ahead they saw what appeared to be a large creature swimming around. Upon seeing that, Xena decided that walking through wasn't a good idea. So she and Gabrielle quickly turned back and got back on land.

GABRIELLE

Well that's not gonna work. So now how do we get through here?

Xena didn't say anything as she looked around for a moment. Then she began gathering large branches and pieces of vine. Using the vines,, she tied the branches together creating a raft. Once it was done Xena put it in the water to make sure it stayed afloat.

XENA

Alright come on.

Xena stepped onto the raft to keep it in place and held out her hand, helping Gabrielle on. Once they were both seated on the raft, Xena pushed off. They began floating through the water as they forged on to find their way out of the Abyss. Using another branch Xena rowed through the water, hopefully steering them in the right direction. The air was filled with the calls of the various unssen creatures around them. They could see parts of what appeared to be large creatures above the water that were swimming nearby. Gabrielle nervously looked into the water. Xena could sense Gabrielle's anxiety.

XENA

I don't think we need to worry, they don't seem to have much interest in us. So we should be fine as long as we stay out of the water.

GABRIELLE

I hope so.

They continued as Xena pushed them along. As they floated by a large tree, Xena caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of her eye. She rowed them up to the small patch of land that the tree sat on.

XENA

I was wondering when one of you would show up again.

Gabrielle looked and saw the goddess Eunomia standing there, leaning up against the tree

EUNOMIA

I just thought I'd check in and see how things were going.

Xena scowled.

XENA

(Sarcasm) Just wonderful.

Eunomia noticed Xena's bandages.

EUNOMIA

(Sarcasm) Clearly.

GABRIELLE

Can you at least tell us if we're going the right way to get out of here?

EUNOMIA

Now why would I do that?

GABRIELLE

If you had any interest in giving us a fair chance here you would.

EUNOMIA

A fair chance you say. I wonder how many people were denied just that at the hands of Xena.

Even though Gabrielle knew what Xena had done in the past, it still felt like a cheep shot for the goddess to use that so casually. Especially since she knew just how much Xena regretted doing all those terrible things. Xena could see Gabrielle getting angry. She put her hand on Gabrielle's shoulder.

XENA

Don't bother Gabrielle. They're not gonna help us.

GABRIELLE

But I can't just let her say things like that.

EUNOMIA

Why not, it's all true.

Xena stopped Gabrielle from arguing with the goddess. Telling her that it would only be a waste of time. But Gabrielle knew that it was because Xena felt like Eunomia was right.

EUNOMIA

I suppose it's time for me to go. I look forward to seeing if you make it through here. I'll be waiting.

Xena noticed that for a brief moment Eunomia appeared to be looking off in the distance. It was quick, but Xena had a feeling that there was something to it. Then Eunomia disappeared.

XENA

Well at least I think I know which way we should head next.

Xena walked back to the raft. Gabrielle followed.

GABRIELLE

How?

XENA

Just before she left, I noticed Eunomia looking in that direction. And now I think I see why.

Xena pointed to some tall object in the far distance.

GABRIELLE

What is that?

XENA

I'm not sure, but I'm willing to bet it's important for escaping this hell.

GABRIELLE

You think that's our way out of here?

XENA

One way to find out. Either way it's clearly something important.

Xena pushed off as they once again floated through the water. Their sights set on the mysterious tower like object that was barely visible through the distant fog. They were on the move for a little while when they felt something bump their little raft. At first Xena ignored it, figuring something had simply nudged them as it swam by. But then it happened again. This time it was harder.

GABRIELLE

Looks like something doesn't like us floating around here.

XENA

We must've gotten a little too close. Hold on, I'll get us away from it.

Xena began changing their direction slightly, trying to get out of the creatures way. However it seemed to follow them as it ramed into the raft again, hard. The force momentarily tilted the whole side of the raft, causing Gabrielle to nearly fall off. Luckily Xena quickly grabbed her, keeping Gabrielle from falling in.

XENA

Hold on tight.

Xena then took her chakrum and watched the water for movement. Ready to strike before the unknown creature. However she couldn't see it. Then Xena realized why. It was right below them. But that knowledge came to her too late, as the creature quickly shot up through the waters surface. It completely destroyed the the raft. Sending Xena and Gabrielle into the water. They quickly resurfaced. The water in that area was quite deep. Xena saw some land a little ways off. She pointed it out to Gabrielle and they began quickly swimming towards it. They got closer to land with Gabrielle was right behind Xena. Xena glanced back to both check on Gabrielle and see if she could spot the creature that was chasing after them. As she did, Xena saw Gabrielle get pulled under the water.

GABRIELLE

Xe...

XENA

Gabrielle!

Xena quickly dove down, chasing after Gabrielle. She swam as fast as she could, trying to reach her. Throwing her chakrum wouldn't work under water. She had to physically get to the creature as it swam away. Gabrielle tried doing everything she could to free herself, but the lack of air was quickly becoming a problem. Panic began to set in as water began to fill her lungs. Xena could see Gabrielle was running out of time. She pushed herself to go faster. Xena reached out, stretching to grab onto the creatures tail. She just barely managed to grab it. The creature continued to swim with Gabrielle in its clutches. Xena was pulled along with them as she got a better hold on it. Then she took her chakrum and used it to slice the creature. The pain forced the creature to release Gabrielle. As soon as it did, Xena quickly swam to her and got them both up to the surface. Gabrielle coughed up water as gasped, finally able to breathe again. But they were far from being out of the woods just yet. Xena knew she had to get them out of the water, before the creature struck again. Now injured from the creature and unable to swim, Gabrielle held on to Xena. Xena could see the blood pooling around them from Gabrielle's wound. Now they really needed to get back to land. Xena began to swim while holding onto Gabrielle. But her path was cut off by the creature as it swam in front of them. Or so Xena thought. Because when she went to turn, she saw it the one that had been chasing after them was still behind them.

XENA

There's more than one?!

Gabrielle saw them too. She knew they'd never escape if Xena had to both swim and keep her a float.

GABRIELLE

Xena you have to go. Save yourself. You'll never...

XENA

Absolutely not. You're only in this predicament because of me. I'm not leaving you. End of discussion.

Gabrielle didn't bother trying to argue with Xena.

GABRIELLE

Okay.

XENA

Just hang on. Well get through this, somehow.

The deadly creatures circled Xena as she held an injured Gabrielle up in the water. The creatures were clearly drawn to the scent of blood. Xena knew she had to get them out of the water. But the creatures weren't going to let them go without a fight. One of them snapped at Xena, who swung back, trying to get it to back off. But as she did, it chomped down on her arm. Bitting down hard.

XENA

Gah!

GABRIELLE

Xena!

With one arm holding Gabrielle and the other in the creatures mouth, Xena seemed defenseless., as another one began moving in for the kill.

XENA

Come on you bastards!

As it closed in Xena swiftly kicked her foot up, nailing the creature right in the jaw. Causing it to back off a little, as the others continued to circle, ready to strike.

GABRIELLE

You can't keep fighting like this.

XENA

You're right. Gabrielle I'm gonna need you to hold on tight okay.

GABRIELLE

Okay, but what do you plan on doing?

XENA

Getting us out of here.

Gabrielle knew that there was no time for Xena to explain, but she trusted that Xena knew what she was doing. Xena helped Gabrielle get situated on Xena's back. Gabrielle held on to her, freeing Xena's other arm to use. Allowing her to better fight. Xena quickly punched the creature that still had a hold of her arm. It let her go. As it backed up, another one came at them. Gabrielle glanced back and saw yet another one of the creatures coming at them.

GABRIELLE

Xena behind us.

Xena quickly looked around for a way out of the water. She knew that she couldn't keep fighting like this for much longer. A few yards away she saw some vines hanging down from a tree just above the water.

XENA

Quick hold your breath.

Gabrielle took a deep inhale. Then Xena did the same as she took them both under water. This allowed her to quickly swim under and past the creatures that had them cornered. However the creatures refused to give up in their pursuit. Xena resurfaced with Gabrielle and began swimming as fast as she could towards the low hanging vines she saw. But the creatures were right on her heels. As Xena got a few feet away, she felt one of the creatures get a hold of her leg. Thinking fast, she got Gabrielle off her back, sending her towards the vines. Xena watched as Gabrielle floated over and grabbed onto the vines. Gabrielle looked back at Xena, who was trying to fight off the beast that grabbed her.

GABRIELLE

Xena!

Xena momentarily turned her attention to Gabrielle.

XENA

Climb. Don't worry about me, just go!

GABRIELLE

I can't just leave you.

XENA

I said go! Now, hurry!

Reluctantly Gabrielle began to climb up the vine, out of the water. Once she got high enough, she watched from above as Xena fought against the creatures in the water. Xena swung her sword, cutting one of the creatures. As she did, another one lept out of the water behind Xena. It crashed down right on top of her, forcing Xena under. Gabrielle couldn't do anything as she helplessly looked on. She waited anxiously for Xena to resurfaced. But after a few moments when she didn't see any sign of Xena, Gabrielle began to become very worried. She could see bubbles coming from below. Gabrielle knew that Xena must've been running out of air.

GABRIELLE

Xena!

Gabrielle looked down into the water, trying to find Xena. But the color made it impossible to see beneath the surface. Every second that passed felt like an eternity as Gabrielle watched for Xena to resurface. Just hoping that she would come back. Gabrielle waited with baited breath.

GABRIELLE

Come on Xena.

More time passed and there was still no sign of Xena. The fear of her not coming back began to set in for Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE

(thinking to herself) There's no way someone can hold their breath for this long. No Xena.

The water below was still and air around was eerily quiet. Gabrielle closed her eyes as she began to cry.

GABRIELLE

No, she can't be gone. Xena... Xena!

Just as Gabrielle yelled, the water below erupted. Gabrielle looked down, as she felt something grab onto the vine she was holding.

GABRIELLE

Xena!

Xena took a moment to catch her breath as she looked up at Gabrielle.

XENA

What, you weren't worried about me were ya?

GABRIELLE

That's not funny. Are you okay?

XENA

I'm alright.

Xena began climbing up the vine. As she did the creature re-emerged from the waters depths. Lunging up at Xena. She raced to climb higher as the creature opened it's mouth, ready to clamp down on its prey, Xena. The creature snapped its jaws shut, grabbing the vine and just barely missing Xena's foot. As it beggan to fall back into the water, Xena quickly cut the vine just below where she was holding. The last thing they needed was to be pulled back in the water. Gabrielle and Xena watched as the creature crashed back into the water. Both the creatures circled below for a bit, before deciding it wasn't worth the effort to keep pursuing and swam away. Both Xena and Gabrielle breath a sigh of relief as they watched the creatures disappear from sight.

GABRIELLE

That was way too close. We seriously need to get out of here.

XENA

Yeah, no kidding.

GABRIELLE

So now what?

XENA

Well no where to go but up.

Xena and Gabrielle climbed the rest of the way up the vine. They sat up in the large tree as they took a much needed rest. Xena scooted around them, trying to relocate the tower that they had been heading for. Finally she spotted it. Then she sat next to Gabrielle.

XENA

Okay the good news is I found the tower again.

GABRIELLE

Do I wanna know the bad news?

XENA

It looks like we still have a good ways to go until we get there.

GABRIELLE

And just how much is "a good ways"?

XENA

See for yourself.

Gabrielle looked in the direction Xena pointed.

GABRIELLE

Wait what?! It looks like we're barely any closer. How is that possible?

XENA

We must've back tracked while we were dealing with those creatures in the water.

GABRIELLE

Well that's just great. Now what do we do? We're never gonna escape this place.

XENA

Calm down Gabrielle, I promised I'd get us out of here. And that's just what I intend to do.

Xena held Gabrielle as they rested for a while in the tree. Eventually they fell asleep. After some time Xena was awakened by a sound. She opened her eyes and quickly grabbed her sword. Then she saw that it was just the goddess Eirene sitting on another branch of the tree they were in.

EIRENE

Morning.

Xena lowered her sword.

XENA

Come to check in again?

Eirene saw that Xena and Gabrielle looked pretty run down and had clearly sustained some injuries from their time in the Abyss.

EIRENE

Yup. I see you've been having some fun with the creatures here.

Xena scowled at her. But she decided not to respond to that comment. There was something else on Xena's mind that she wanted to discuss.

XENA

You might not believe me, but I was actually hoping to run into you again.

EIRENE

Is that so? I'm surprised to hear that. Especially coming from you.

XENA

Yea me too. But I wanted to talk to you about something I've been thinking about.

EIRENE

And why would that be.

XENA

Because you don't like violence. And I'm assuming you know I've been fighting and killing the creatures here. The creatures that you seem to like.

Eirene got a slightly sad look in her eyes.

EIRENE

Yes I'm aware. Those poor creatures. You just killed them. You and your insatiable need for violence.

XENA

(Annoyed tone) They attacked us. I was left with no choice.

Xena quickly got back on track

XENA

But what I could swear to not harm any more of them.

EIRENE

And why would you do that? Have you accepted your fate?

XENA

Possibly. I want to make a deal.

EIRENE

A deal?

XENA

That's right. I'll give in and stop slaying your precious creatures and take whatever punishment you see fit. One one condition.

EIRENE

And what if I don't care to hear you're proposition?

XENA

I'll make it a point to kill every last creature I see. And you should know based off my track record that I'll have no problem doing it.

EIRENE

You're bluffing.

XENA

Am I?

Xena took her chakrum and aimed it at a small harmless looking creature that was sitting on a rock below. Eirene didn't flinch. Xena shrugged, then she threw her chakrum at the creature, instantly killing it.

EIRENE

No..

Xena looked at Eirene as the chakrum returned to her hand.

XENA

If you still don't believe me I'm sure I can find plenty more little things scurrying around here. I wonder how long it'll take to clear this area of them.

EIRENE

You can't. There's no way you could possibly do that.

XENA

You wanna test that theory? After all I am a woman of many skills. You've seen my work against human opponents who were armed. What do you think I'll be able to do against unarmed non humans. I won't even give it a second thought.

Eirene could tell that Xena was completely serious.

EIRENE

Very well, you win. What's your proposition.

XENA

I'll leave all the creatures alone and spend what ever time I have left here without trying to escape.

EIRENE

And what is it that you want in return?

Xena looked down at Gabrielle, who was fast asleep in her arms.

XENA

All I want is for her to get out of here safely. Please, there's no need to punish her for my wrong doings.

Xena looked back at Eirene.

XENA

That's my deal. You take Gabrielle from this place and let her live out a normal life. And I'll accept your punishment and stay here until I die.

The goddes 0f peace, Eirene stood a bit surprised by Xena's offer.

EIRENE

What is this, some sort of trick? You think if you act selflessly you'll be forgiven and escape your punishment.

Xena looked back down at Gabrielle, who was still asleep.

XENA

No. I mentioned exactly what I said. You allow Gabrielle to leave this place and I wont fight to escape any more. I'll just stay here. As long as Gabrielle's safe, that's all that matters to me.

Eirene heard nothing but sincerity in Xena's voice. She thought to herself for a moment. Then she spoke.

EIRENE

Very well. I accept your offer.

Xena looked at Eirene and thanked her.

EIRENE

Don't thank me just yet. It's not decided that she will be allowed to leave for certain.

XENA

But you just said you'd accept my offer.

EIRENE

I did, yes. But you forget that I am not the only one who oversees such punishments as this. The others must agree to your deal as well.

Xena thought that each of the Horae could make decisions on their own. But was that not the case.

XENA

I didn't know that you had to answer to the other Horae.

EIRENE

(annoyed tone) I answer to no one Xena.

XENA

If that were really true, you wouldn't have to get permission from the other's just to preform what should be a simple task.

EIRENE

You dare question my power.

XENA

I think we both know that I don't take much stock in any gods power. Though it would seem that the other two in your little group underestimate you.

EIRENE

Why do you say that?

XENA

Oh just a thought. Although I have had my fare share of encounters with a number of you gods. So I think I understand how a lot of the gods operate by now. So if they did underestimate you I'd say it's probably because they see your view of peace as weak. I mean how can you really punish anyone who's done so much wrong if you don't give them some real pain? And you don't even like seeing the creatures here get hurt. But the other Horae clearly don't share your affection towards them, do they? Otherwise why would they put me here? Knowing full well that I have the ability to slaughter so many of them. But then again what do I know? I'm sure they respect your views and opinions on plenty.

Eirene was silent. Xena knew that her words had impacted the goddess. And that was just what she wanted. She continued.

XENA

Or do they?

Eirene took a moment to think before she spoke.

EIRENE

I'm certain they do.

Xena heard the uncertainty in Eirene's voice. Her plan was working.

XENA

Are you?

EIRENE

Y-yes.

XENA

Then why don't you prove it? And take my deal.

Eirene thought for a bit then she finally agreed to accept Xena's proposal.

EIRENE

Very well I will take Gabrielle out of the Abyss. But only if you give me your word that you won't harm anything else in here.

XENA

I swear on my, no Gabrielle's life that if she's safe no harm will come to anything that roams theses lands.

EIRENE

Fine. The others are calling me, so I must leave for now. But I'll return in bit to take her. When I come back you are to surrender your weapons and give them to me. Then I will bring Gabrielle safely back to the world she knows. Agreed?

XENA

Yes.

Eirene nodded, confirming their arrangement. She told Xena she'd be back soon. And to make sure Gabrielle was ready to go when she returned. Xena agreed and thanked the goddess. Then Eirene vanished, leaving just Xena and Gabrielle. Xena looked down at Gabrielle. She knew Gabrielle wouldn't be happy with her decision. But she refused to let Gabrielle suffer in the Abyss with her. She didn't even deserve to be there in the first place. She quietly spoke to Gabrielle as she slept.

XENA

At least soon you won't have to worry about all the trouble that comes from being around me. You'll be safe. Just know that I'll never forget you. I will always hold you in my heart. I love you Gabrielle.

Xena gently kissed Gabrielle's forehead. Then she sat quietly watching Gabrielle as she waited for Eirene to come and take her. She didn't bother waking Gabrielle just yet. Xena hoped that Gabrielle would just sleep until she was back to the outside world. She knew if Gabrielle were aware of her plan, she'd never willingly leave Xena to stay there alone for the rest of her life. A sad smile appeared on Xena's face as she thought of all the memories that they shared. And how soon those memories would be all she would have. After some time Eirene reappeared.

EIRENE

It's time.

Xena looked down at Gabrielle for what she felt would be the last time she would ever see her.

XENA

Goodbye Gabrielle.

Xena softly kissed her once more. As she pulled away Gabrielle sleepily opened her eyes. She saw the look of sadness on Xena's face as she looked down at her.

GABRIELLE

Xena?

Xena had wanted to avoid doing this while Gabrielle was awake. But it was too late now.

XENA

I'm sorry, for everything.

Xena looked at Eirene.

XENA

Do it. Quick take her.

GABRIELLE

What are you doing?!

Eirene reached down and placed her hand on Gabrielle's shoulder.

XENA

Goodbye Gabrielle, I love you.

GABRIELLE

Wait what's going on? Xe...

Before Gabrielle could finish Eirene used her powers to take Gabrielle back to the normal world. The both of them vanishing from sight. Leaving Xena sitting there all alone. Xena closed her eyes as she felt the tears begin to well up.

XENA

I'm sorry Gabrielle. I hope someday you can forgive me for leaving you like this. But I know it was the right thing to do. You didn't belong here. But I do.

Gabrielle stood back in the normal world. She turned to Eirene who hadn't left yet. Gabrielle asked her why she brought her back. The goddess told Gabrielle about the deal she made with Xena.

GABRIELLE

No, take me back.

EIRENE

You want to go back in there?

GABRIELLE

No, but I do wanna be wherever Xena is.

EIRENE

You do realize that you don't actually belong there.

GABRIELLE

I belong with Xena. And I don't care where that might put me.

EIRENE

You should know that you being sent there with Xena wasn't my choice. I was out voted.

GABRIELLE

I don't care. Either bring Xena here, or take me back to her.

Eirene got an irritated look on her face.

EIRENE

What is it with the two of you thinking that you can just talk to God's like this?

Gabrielle took a moment to calm herself. She knew that she needed to choose her words more carefully. The last thing she wanted to do right now was some how insult or offend Eirene. The goddess was her only hope of getting back to Xena.

GABRIELLE

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. It's just that Xena means the world to me, and the thought of her spending the rest of her life stuck in that place all by herself. I just can't let that happen to her. I know you don't believe me, but Xena doesn't deserve that.

EIRENE

Do you know all that she has done? If anyone deserves such a punishment, it's her.

GABRIELLE

I'm very aware of Xena's past. But since I've known her, she's been doing as much as she can to try to make up for it. That has to count for something.

EIRENE

While that is admirable, it doesn't erase what she's done.

GABRIELLE

So what you're saying is that no matter how much a person changes for the better they should still be condemned for their past mistakes?

EIRENE

If they've done the sorts of things that Xena has, yes.

GABRIELLE

That's wrong. Then there would be no point in anyone striving to become better. People shouldn't solely be judged on the mistakes they've made. Especially if they've proven time and time again that they're not that person anymore. And Xena isn't still the person you Horae think she is. I mean if she was, why would she have asked you to let me out of that place while she stayed?

EIRENE

That was truly a beautiful and impassioned speech. You clearly think quite highly of Xena, don't you?

GABRIELLE

If you had actually been paying attention to everything she's been doing you'd understand why. Please I can't stand the thought of Xena being punished like this. And never being able to see her again, it's too much. Please don't make Xena do this, I love her.

Eirene was touched by Gabrielle's words. But as the goddess of peace and one of the Horae, she felt as though she had a duty to fulfill.

EIRENE

I'm sorry. I truly am. But it's my job to punish those who have gone against peace. The same goes for Eunomia and Dike. Peace, justice and good order must be preserved. You should consider yourself fortunate that I even let you free. The other's won't be pleased with that, but as I said I don't believe that you should've been sent to the Abyss to begin with.

GABRIELLE

Let me talk to the other Horae, please. There must be some way Xena can return and still satisfyyour need to punish her.

EIRENE

No we discussed her punishment before we even revealed ourselves to you.

GABRIELLE

But...

Eirene was losing patience with Gabrielle's persistence. Her voice boomed and echoed as she stated that the Horae's judgment on Xena was final.

EIRENE

Silence! What's done is done. Xena will stay where she is and suffer the consequences of her actions. We, the Horae have spoken!

With that Eirene raised her hand and vanished. Gabrielle just stood there on the road by herself.

GABRIELLE

(thinking to herself) No. I can't just leave Xena in that awful place. I don't know how, but I'll find a way to free Xena.

Gabrielle looked up into the sky.

GABRIELLE

I'll wait for you Xena. I know you told the Horae you'd willingly stay there, but I know you. And I knew you'll find your way back. You have to.

Meanwhile Xena was still sitting in the same place she was before Eirene left with Gabrielle.

XENA

(sighs) Well now what do I do?

Xena idlely looked off into the distance. She saw the tower that she and Gabrielle were heading for. She wondered if she should still even try to reach the exit.

XENA

I wonder if due to the deal, they closed the portal out of here. I could go just to check.

Xena stood up.

XENA

Either way it beats just sitting here.

Xena looked up into the sky as she thought about Gabrielle.

XENA

Stay safe Gabrielle. Hopefully I can make it to that exit and it still works. I'll escape from here. I just need you to trust me. Just wait for me,

And so Xena set out on her own to reach the tower. Dispite what she told Eirene, Xena hadn't given up on escaping. Now with Gabrielle safe, Xena could put all her focus on what it was going to take to get out. It wasn't going to be easy. But Xena was ready to face the full extent of what this place had in store for her. She was fully prepared to fight her way out of the Abyss or die trying.

Xena marched on towards the tower like structure. It seemed as though the closer she got, the more aggressive the creatures roaming the land appeared to be. She did her best to avoid as many of them as she could. Though she did have to fight off some. As Xena continued she came across a large pit. Xena glanced down, checking just how deep the pit was. She couldn't see the bottom. So she picked up a small rock and dropped it in, waiting for the sound when it hit the ground below. But when she didn't hear anything, it confirmed her suspicions that if she fell into this pit, it would be the end of her. She looked to see if she could spot a way around, but couldn't see one in the general area.

XENA

Guess I gotta figure out a way to get across.

Xena began to survey her surroundings to try and find something that could help her get across. Even with her resourcefulness Xena couldn't find anything that she could use. But Xena wasn't giving up, she was determined to reach the tower. So she walked along side the pit, figuring going around might very well be her only option for the time being. She walked for some time. Then she heard a screeching sound coming from the distance. She looked up ahead and saw some more strange creatures. She could see that there were a couple different types. They appeared to be fighting each other. Among the group Xena noticed that some of the creatures could fly. Upon seeing that, Xena knew how she was not only going to cross the large pit, but make it to the exit of the Abyss.

XENA

Now all I have to do is catch one.

Now with a plan, Xena went over to some trees and gathered some vines. Then she crouched down as she stealthily crept into some tall grass that was close to where the flying creatures were. She made a lasso out of the vines. Then she looked above, inspecting how many creatures there were. Along with the ones on the ground, there were a fairly good amount in that small area. It was clear that actually executing her new plan was going to be even harder than she had initially thought. But this appeared to be her only hope of getting across. So dispite the risk, Xena knew she had to do this.

XENA

It's now or never.

Xena stood up and began purposefully drawing attention to herself. She yelled and waved her arms around making herself a noticeable as possible. After a few moments the flying creatures took notice of her and began coming towards her. Which was exactly what Xena had planned. However she also caught the attention of the other creatures on the ground. And they too began charging for Xena. Xena had already foreseen the likelihood of this happening. So without hesitation she drew her sword and prepared to fight.

XENA

Alright let's go.

As the creatures closed in, Xena took out her chakrum and flung it at them. It hit a couple and took them down. However when it struck one of the creatures, the chakrum got embedded into it's flesh and became unable to return to Xena. So until she could manually retrieve it, Xena's only weapon was now her sword. But she didn't have time to worry about that. For the moment all she could do was keep fighting. And that's exactly what she did. She stashed and carved her way through the creatures that continued to attack. As she fought Xena was scratched, clawed and bitten numerous times, dispite her best efforts to defend herself. But she continued to fight. After taking out a good number of the creatures, Xena noticed that some of them seemed to stopping their attacks. At first she thought it was because they had witnessed her kill a number of them and didn't want to become her next victim. But that theory was short lived when Xena heard a loud deep roar. She looked in the direction of the origin of the sound. Then she saw it. A huge creature that walked up right. It had large fangs, and claws. Even with everything Xena had encountered in the Abyss, this looked like the deadliest thing there. And based on the fact that a good number of the other creatures ran off as it approached, that certainly seemed to be the case. Xena had the feeling that fighting against this thing wasn't a wise decision. She looked up and saw that the flying creatures were still overhead.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) At least they stuck around. Good.

Xena's focus was quickly drawn back to the new creature that had appeared when it let out another roar. She watched as it got down on all fours, clearly ready to charge right for her. Xena knew that she had two options. Try and fight the creature, even though every instint she had was telling her not to. Or make an attempt to run and secure one of the flying creatures to escape. Neither choice seemed to favor Xena. But she couldn't just stand there and do nothing. She had to make a move. And so Xena began running towards some trees. She figured she'd have a better chance of catching an airborne creature if she were higher up. As she ran, she quickly snatched up her chakrum as she went by the dead creature it had been in. Xena could hear the stomping of the large creature's footsteps coming up behind her. She glanced over her shoulder and saw the creature chasing after her. It was quite fast, easily gaining ground as it closed the distance between itself and Xena. Xena pushed herself to run faster. Xena got closer to the tree. But was forced to stop just a few yards short, as the large creature lept through the air and landed in front of her, blocking her route.

XENA

Now aren't you persistent. Fine you have my attention. So come and get me big guy.

The creature roared as if it understood Xena's taunting. It changed at Xena, who dove out of the way, just barely dodging it. She then began heading for the tree again. But she was caught off guard when she was hit from the side as the creature quickly rammed into her. The force sent Xena crashing hard into a large rock nearby.

XENA

GAH!

The impact of both hits did some decent damage. That paired with the injuries she had sustained from the other creatures, Xena was not in good shape. Still she made it back to her feet.

XENA

Is that the best you got.

Xena again began moving towards the tree. But now she was significantly slower due to her current state. She cut down the other remaining creatures that stood in her way. Then again the large creature tackled Xena. This time throwing her right against the tree she had been heading for. She hit hard and then landed face down on the ground. Xena just layed there as the creature slowly approached her, stalking it's prey. Xena slowly raised her head, seeing the creature advance towards her. She tried to stand, but the pain was too much. Xena could barely even move at this point. She managed to get to a sitting position and learned up against the tree as she stared down the creature in front of her. Xena could hear the flying creatures over head. She looked up and saw some of them perched in the tree. This was her chance to get one. But she was gonna have to be quick. She was likely only going to get one shot at this. She got the vine she had with her ready, quickly tying a loop in one end of the vine. As she did the creature on the ground roared again as it began running at her. In a last attempt at survival, Xena dove slightly to the side at the very last second. This caused the creature charging at Xena to slam into the tree. As it did the flying creatures in the tree were startled and began to fly off. Still on the ground, Xena quickly turned and threw the looped end of the vine in the air. It hooked around one of the flying creatures legs. As it did the creature on the ground refocused on Xena and was just about to pounce when Xena was lifted into the air by the creature she had hooked. The grounded creature let out an angery roar as it watched Xena being carried away. Xena let out a small sigh of relief as she looked down from above, knowing that she had just narrowly averted disaster.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) That was another close one. I don't know how many more times I can just barely avoid death like that here. Hopefully I can just fly with this thing the rest of the way to the exit of this hell.

But just as Xena finished that thought, the flying creature that she was attached to began flying erraticly, trying to shake Xena off. Now Xena was in a midair struggle. And based on the hight the creature was flying at. If Xena fell now, she would undoubtedly meet her demise. Xena had no choice but to try and hold on for dear life or else she would be sent falling to her death.

Xena clung tightly to the vine that was looped around the flying creatures leg, as it flew around desperately trying to shake her off of it. Dispite this she began to ascend up the vine to get on the creatures back. She made it up to its claws. She reached up and grabbed onto it, letting go of the vine. Xena began climbing up the creatures leg. But as she climbed, using its other talons the creature began swipping at her. Xena drew her sword as she fended off the creature. As she held on with one hand, she blocked the creature from striking her. She did this for a bit, until she found an opening and went for it. She swung her sword, cutting into the creatures leg. When she did, the creature let out a loud screech and swipped at her again. This time catching her arm. This caused Xena to momentarily lose her grip on the creature. She quickly began to fall. Luckily she was able to regain her grasp just before the vine completely slipped out of reach. Now at the very end of the vine Xena to tried to climb back up. But now the creature was flying too erraticly. Making the vine swing every which way. It was all Xena could do but just to hold on. The creature took Xena on a wild ride through the air. She held on as tight as she could, as the creature tried to throw her off. But Xena refused to let go. Though she was being thrown all around, Xena noticed that the creature did happen to be flying towards the tower she was trying to get to.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) Well at least it's something. Now all I have to do is hol...

Before Xena could finish her thought she heard a ripping sound. She looked up and saw that the vine was beginning to break.

XENA

Oh f...

Before Xena could even utter that last word the vine gave. Snapping and sending Xena plummeting to the ground below. She crashed into a tree. The branches broke as she hit them on her way to the bottom. Though her landing in that tree may very well have been the only thing that saved Xena's life. Hitting those branches slowed down her fall enough so when she hit the ground the impact didn't kill her. Still it was a rough landing. Xena layed there very hurt. She looked up, seeing the creature fly off.

XENA

(Sarcasm/ thinking to herself) Well there goes my ride.

Xena looked around, as she tried to get her barrings. The area she was in now was quite different from the other places she had seen in the Abyss. Clearly the landscape varied quite a bit between areas. Where spot she found herself in now looked desolate. It was dark there were only rocks, a few dead trees and large cliffs on either side in the distance. The whole area gave off an aura of death. Though all of the Abyss had been dangerous and deadly., there was something about this area that sent a cold chill down Xena's spine. She knew that she could not stay there long or something terrible would surely happen. Xena tried to get up. But she could barely even move at all. Everything hurt. Xena could feel herself beginning to slowly fade.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) I'll just rest here for a few minutes. Then I'll get going.

Xena looked to the side and then saw it. There in the near distance stood the tower. Her path to freedom, it was so close now. Xena smiled to herself.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) I actually made it. I can get out of here. I can see Gabrielle again.

She tried again to get up, but still couldn't.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) Once I'm able to actually move.

Xena layed there for a bit as she waited for the pain to dull enough for her to start moving again. She closed her eyes as she tried to rest up as much as she could. However after only a few minutes that plan was thrown right out the window when Xena heard growling. She looked to her other side and saw what appeared to be a pack of wolf-like creatures. Different from the one's that she had seen before.

XENA

(Sarcasm) Just has to go from bad to worse doesn't it?

Xena watched as the creatures slowly began walking towards her. They snarled as they beared their teeth. Clearly not appropriating Xena being there. They began going around her in a big circle. Again Xena tried to get up, but still she was unable to really move.

XENA

So this is how I die. Fine.

Xena took out her sword.

XENA

But don't you think I'm gonna make it easy for ya.

Xena swung her sword, trying to scare them off. Though that threat seemed to have to opposite effect. It only angered the creatures further. One of them lunged at her. Even though her movement was limited, Xena was still able to swing her sword. She cut down the creature and it dropped to the ground next to her. Xena looked at the others.

XENA

The rest of you are gonna have have to do better than that.

The rest of the wolf-ike creatures growled and howled as they began to run in and pounce on Xena. She fought them off as best she could. Getting a slight boost in her mobility due to adrenaline. But she still couldn't get up. Though she did manage to roll to her back, that made it considerably easier for her to fight and defend herself. Xena cut and stabbed everything that came at her. But the creature's numbers were too great. And her injuries were too severe for her to keep up this level of offense for muck longer. But Xena continued to fight. She just kept swinging her sword. Cutting down as many as she could. She raised her arm to swing again, when one of the creatures jumped up and bit into her arm. Xena tried to get free, but when she went to reach with her other hand to pry the creature off, another one latched onto that wrist as well. Xena tried everything she could to get them off of her, but at this point there wasn't anything else she could do. She was far too weak and injured from everything else she had endured up to this point. As the rest of the wolf-ike creatures closed in, Xena stopped struggling.

XENA

I'm sorry Gabrielle. I tried but it looks like I'm not making it out of here.

And so completely exhausted and unable to fight any longer, Xena just closed her eyes and accepted her fate. That this was where she was going to die.

Xena could hear the creatures growling as her eyes were closed, waiting for them to finish her off.

XENA

(Thinking to herself) Would you just get it over with already.

Xena layed there, listening to the creatures as they stalked her. They growled and howled, circling around her ready to strike. As Xena listened she suddenly heard one of the creatures whimper. Then she heard it again. Curious, Xena opened her eyes. And was stunned by what she saw.

XENA

Gabrielle?!

There in fact in front of her stood Gabrielle. She was fighting off the creatures that had Xena in their sights. One by one Gabrielle smacked the creatures away with her staff. Eventually, tired of getting beat on the creatures gave up and ran off. Then Gabrielle turned her attention to Xena. She quickly noticed the serious state Xena was in.

GABRIELLE

God's. Xena what happened?

She knelt down beside Xena as she got a closer look at her injuries.

XENA

I have a better question. What are you doing back here?

GABRIELLE

You didn't seriously think that I would just go on with my life while you were stuck here did you?

XENA

You don't belong in here Gabrielle. You never should've come back.

GABRIELLE

I'm not leaving you here alone. You say I don't deserve to be here. But neither do you. And don't even give me the whole punishment for your past thing. You've been working to overcome that just fine before all of this. So I refuse to let anyone say that you should be here. And that includes you.

Xena knew that there was no fighting Gabrielle on this. So she redirected the conversation.

XENA

How did you even get back anyway?

Gabrielle was about the speak when they heard more howling.

GABRIELLE

I'll explain later. First let's get you somewhere a little safer.

Gabrielle carefully helped Xena stand and they slowly walked to a nearby group of rocks. They were in a circle like formation, so they provided at least a small amount of cover from anything seeing them and attacking. Xena layed against one of the rocks as Gabrielle tried to stop some of the bleeding from Xena's multiple wounds.

XENA

Okay were not out in the open anymore. So now how bout you tell me how you got back.

GABRIELLE

Well let's see...

-FLASH BACK-

Gabrielle paced back and forth on the road as she thought out loud. Eirene had just left after bringing her back from the Abyss a bit ago.

GABRIELLE

I can't believe Xena did this... No actually I can. This is exactly the sort of thing she would do. When I get back, oh she's getting an ear full. But first I have to actually figure out how to get back. You know you'd think that when the goddesses saw that selfless act, that would've proven how much Xena's changed.

Gabrielle stopped.

GABRIELLE

That's it! I'll find those goddesses and I'll make them see who Xena really is... Now I just need to find them.

Gabrielle tried to think of how she was even going to find the Horae. After all they had been the ones who found her and Xena to begin with. Gabrielle replayed everything that happened since the whole ordeal started. Then she got an idea.

GABRIELLE

How this whole thing started. It was probably just a ploy to trap Xena, but that's the only thing I can think of right now. Why would they pick there specificly. I wonder if there's a reason behind it. I think I should at least go check it out. It's better than just standing here doing nothing. Fine off to Athens then.

And so Gabrielle set off for Athens. Hoping to find a way to reach Xena and help her escape from the Abyss. It took a while but Gabrielle made it to Athens. Once there she began asking around for whoever might have sent for Xena. If that wasn't just part of the trap set by the Horae. She asked around, but no one seemed to have any idea of what she was talking about. After a lot of searching and coming up with nothing, Gabrielle was beginning to think that coming to Athens was a lost cause after all. She stood in the middle of the city as she tried thinking of anything that she could do to help Xena. But she had no idea what to do. As she thought a man came up to her.

MAN

Excuse me, are you okay?

Gabrielle gave him a fake smile and said she was fine. Then her expression returned to the serious look she had before the man approached her.

MAN

If you don't mind me saying, you don't seem fine.

GABRIELLE

Sorry I just have some things on my mind.

MAN

Is there anything I can do?

GABRIELLE

Thanks but unless you can summon a trio of extremely judgemental Goddesses or know how to get into a wasteland that's magically cut off from everything. I don't think you can really help me.

MAN

What did you just say?

GABRIELLE

Right, all that probably sounded really crazy. Never mind. I was just thinking out loud. But I appreciate your concern.

MAN

But did you say a trio of judgmental goddesses?

Gabrielle looked at the man.

GABRIELLE

I did.

MAN

You're not by chance talking about the Horae are you?

Gabrielle said she did and asked the man how he knew about them.

MAN

Just a couple weeks ago my brother told me that he had spoken to them.

GABRIELLE

Do you know what about?

MAN

From what my brother said, they talked about some woman that he had encountered a number years ago. Apparently she was some warlord or something. I think he said her name was Re.., Ce... Ze...

GABRIELLE

Xena?

MAN

Yeah that's it, Xena. How'd you know? You've heard of her?

GABRIELLE

You could say that. But you were saying.

MAN

My brother said those goddesses asked all sorts of questions about her.

GABRIELLE

Like what?

MAN

I don't know the details, but I think it was about his experience he had when he encountered her.

GABRIELLE

Do you know what happened to him?

MAN

Not specifically. He doesn't really like to talk about it. Though he said that he was one of the lucky ones that lived. Though he's never been the same sense.

GABRIELLE

I'm sorry that happened.

MAN

Don't be. It's not like you have anything to do with that woman.

GABRIELLE

(Talking quietly to herself) Well not THAT woman.

MAN

Sorry what?

GABRIELLE

What else did your brother say?

MAN

Just that from what he got from their conversation, apparently the Horae had been going around talking to a large number of people who were in some way hurt by that woman. And from everything I heard that's a very long list.

GABRIELLE

I see. Do you know if the goddesses came to him or if it was the other way around?

MAN

I'm pretty sure they came to him. Why do you ask?

GABRIELLE

Just curious. Thanks for your time.

Gabrielle began to walk off. But then she thought of something.

GABRIELLE

Oh one more question. How many goddesses came to see him?

MAN

Two

GABRIELLE

Do you know if one of them was named Eirene?

MAN

I don't think so. I think my brother said their names were Eunomia and Dike.

GABRIELLE

(Thinking to herself) So the Horae were asking around about Xena before we encountered them. And only two of them. Why did they leave the third one out? Though she does seem different from the other two.

Gabrielle continued investigating the Horae's activities before they met up with her and Xena. It took some searching but Gabrielle ended up finding a bunch of people who had the Horae visit and ask about Xena. Though she noticed that they only seemed to be people who had bad experiences with Xena. It was becoming clear that they didn't have any actual interest in any of the good Xena had done.

GABRIELLE

This isn't actually about justice or any of what they were saying. They just wanted to punish Xena. Well at least Eunomia and Dike. But Eirene seems different. If I can find her.

As Gabrielle was talking to herself she noticed a bright flash of light behind her. She turned around and saw Eunomia and Dike standing there.

EUNOMIA

It seems you were correct. Eirene did allowed Gabrielle to go free.

DIKE

We can deal with that later. First things first.

GABRIELLE

You two claim to be about justice and order, but you're both nothing but liers.

DIKE

Who are you to speak to us in such a way?

EUNOMIA

Remember neither she nor Xena have any respect for the gods.

GABRIELLE

That's not true. I just don't like God's like you. You purposefully only talked to people that Xena wronged. You never even bothered looking into any of the good she did.

EUNOMIA

It was unnecessary.

GABRIELLE

You're wrong. If you really wanted true justice you would have actually done through research. Xena's helped so many people. You just wanted punish her no matter what.

EUNOMIA

Silence! You know nothing mortal.

GABRIELLE

I know plenty.

DIKE

It doesn't matter anyway. You will be going back with Xena now.

GABRIELLE

Hey why isn't Eirene with you?

DIKE

That does not concern you.

GABRIELLE

Is it because she let me go free?

EUNOMIA

We said that's none of your business.

GABRIELLE

She's not like you two is she? She actually seems reasonable.

DIKE/ EUNOMIA

Silence!

Thunder cracked through the air as the two goddesses voices boomed.

DIKE

You should count yourself fortunate that we don't eliminate you where you stand.

EUNOMIA

Instead we will take you back to serve out your punishment.

GABRIELLE

Fine I never wanted to leave Xena alone there anyway. So send me back and then both me and Xena will escape from that place together.

The goddesses laughed a little.

DIKE

I seems that they still believe that there's a way out.

GABRIELLE

But I thought...

EUNOMIA

You thought what we wanted you to think. Why would we make a way for you to avoid punishment?

GABRIELLE

So this whole time there's never actually been any option of escaping.

EUNOMIA

No.

DIKE

Now it's time for you to go back.

There was a bright, blinding light and when Gabrielle opened her eyes, she was back in the Abyss. She looked around trying to see if Xena was around. Then off in the distance she saw a group of creatures that appeared to be stalking some prey. Gabrielle was about to leave to search for Xena, when she heard Xena's voice. Gabrielle looked closer at the creatures. Then she noticed that the prey they were stalking was actually Xena.

GABRIELLE

Xena. She's in trouble.

Gabrielle quickly rated over and defended Xena from the creatures.

-PRESENT-

Xena sat quietly as Gabrielle finished telling her what happened while she was gone.

GABRIELLE

So that's pretty much it.

XENA

I see. Honestly I had a feeling that giving us a way to escape was a lie. It didn't make sense if they were so dead set on punishing us. But I couldn't be sure so that's why we were still heading for the tower.

GABRIELLE

But there must be something there. Why else would it be here? Plus you said that one of them looked at it quickly when we talked to them.

XENA

True. That's also why we're still going. It seems important to those Gods for some reason. Now we just need to get there.

GABRIELLE

But how? You can barely move.

XENA

Based on everything you just told me and what I've seen first hand, I think I know how we can beat the Horae and escape from this place for good.

GABRIELLE

Really, how?

XENA

Let's just say that there seems to be an imbalance of power within the group. And I'm willing to bet that a certain one of them isn't too happy with that arrangement. So I think we can use that knowledge to our advantage.

GABRIELLE

What do you plan on doing Xena?

XENA

Simple. We're gonna start a civil war among some God's.

Xena and Gabrielle sat, hunkered down between the rock formation that they had taken shelter in, to prevent anything from spoting and attacking them.

GABRIELLE

How do you plan on turning the Horae against each other?

XENA

We've both witnessed that there appears to be an imbalance of power between the three.

GABRIELLE

Yeah but how does that help us?

XENA

We're just gonna give Eirene a little pep talk and suggest that she stands up for herself. And I have a feeling that the other two might not be too thrilled about that. So once we get things going all we just wait for the group to implode. And if my plan goes right, we'll have ourselves both an ally in this and a way out of here.

GABRIELLE

And if it doesn't go right?

XENA

We'll probably be killed by the goddesses.

GABRIELLE

(Sarcasm) Oh that's comforting.

XENA

But I won't let this plan fail. We're gonna escape from here Gabrielle, I promise.

GABRIELLE

I believe you. So what exactly do we do?

XENA

First we need to get to that tower. Even though there might not be a portal there, we need to find out what is. I have a feeling that we can use what we find to offer advantage.

GABRIELLE

But how, your in no shape to be moving around right now.

XENA

I already thought of that too.

Xena looked outside the rock formation. Seeing a number of different creatures roaming around.

XENA

We're gonna get a ride.

GABRIELLE

You can't be serious right now. Isn't that how you ended up like this in the first place?

XENA

Yeah. But we'll be staying on the ground this time. So crash landing won't be an issue.

GABRIELLE

Okay but how do we even get a creature that's one, not gonna to immediately try and kill us. And two, actually catch it. You can barely move and I'm...

XENA

You're going to be the bait.

GABRIELLE

I'm going to be the bait... wait what?! Now hold on a minute Xena you can't just...

XENA

Come on Gabrielle you should know that I would never intentionally put you in danger. Obviously I have a plan for that too.

GABRIELLE

I know

(Sighs) Fine, what do you need me to do.

XENA

Not much. Just stand around, look appetizing and be ready to run. You know simple stuff.

GABRIELLE

(Sarcasm) Sure sounds real simple.

XENA

(Joking) I thought you'd agree.

Now let's get to work.

Not being able to move much, Xena had Gabrielle stealthily gather a few things she needed for her plan. Once that was done, Xena made a couple of lassos. She had Gabrielle put one around her waist.

XENA

I'll be up in that tree with the other end of the vine. All you need to do is get one of those creatures close enough for me to catch. Then I'll pull you up. I'll keep my chakrum ready if things get too dangerous. If I could run, I'd do this myself.

GABRIELLE

I know. But next time we're going up against blood thirsty creatures you're being the bait.

XENA

Noted. Okay you ready?

GABRIELLE

As I'll ever be.

Xena and Gabrielle waited until the coast was clear and made their way over to the large tree that Xena had pointed out. Dispite her injuries, Xena managed to get up into the tree using the other lasso she made as a pully system. After she was situated in the tree, Xena took off the lasso and kept it ready for use when she would need it. In her hand she held the end of the other lasso, which was attached around Gabrielle's waist, who was standing by the tree on the ground below.

XENA

Okay you can go. Just remember stay calm, I got you.

Gabrielle began walking away from the tree and towards a creature that was walking around.

GABRIELLE

(Sarcasm/ talking to herself) Just stay calm. Right. Easy for her to say. She's not the one being used as live bait.

Gabrielle cautiously ventured closer to the large creature. Xena had pointed out the one for Gabrielle to bait, saying that it was big enough for both of them to ride. It looked similar to a bear and just as intimidating. Gabrielle got behind on rock that was right near the creature. She looked back at Xena, making sure that she was ready. Xena nodded, giving Gabrielle the go ahead. With that Gabrielle took a deep calming breath and ran out into the open, attempting to draw the creatures attention.

GABRIELLE

Hey you! You look hungry. Bet you can't catch me.

The creature took notice of Gabrielle and growled as it began walking towards her.

GABRIELLE

Well that worked quick.

Gabrielle began backing away as she continued to entice the creature. Making sure it kept following her. Then the creature roared and began running at Gabrielle.

XENA

Gabrielle, run!

Gabrielle quickly turned around and began running back towards the tree and Xena. The creature chased right after her. She ran as fast as she could towards the tree. Xena kept close watch and waited for the right moment to act. Gabrielle glanced behind her, seeing the creature closing in.

GABRIELLE

Xena!

Gabrielle got to the tree.

GABRIELLE

Quick, Xena, pull me up.

XENA

Not just yet.

GABRIELLE

Xena it's right behind me.

XENA

It's not close enough yet.

GABRIELLE

What?! I say it's plenty close. Now pull me up.

XENA

Almost.

GABRIELLE

This isn't funny.

Gabrielle turned to see where the creature was. As she did the creature ran and lept through the air, diving streight at Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE

Xena!

Suddenly Gabrielle felt herself being yanked up into the air. As she went up she saw Xena coming down from the tree.

XENA

Hold on to that branch.

Gabrielle did just that as she watched Xena land right on the creatures back. Xena let go of the tether attached to Gabrielle. Then she took the other lasso she had and looped it around the creature's neck and held on tight. The creature roared as it bucked, trying to get Xena off of it's back. Though every movement hurt, Xena kept her grip on the creature. Gabrielle watched as Xena tried to calm the creature or at least ware it down enough where it would stop fighting her. After a bit the creature seemed to give up on trying to knock Xena off. Xena took a few minutes to ride around on the creature, getting a feel for its behavior and how to best control it. Once she was satisfied Xena looked up into the tree at Gabrielle.

XENA

You can come down now.

Gabrielle climbed down and took the lasso off from around her waist. Then she looked at the creature.

GABRIELLE

We're really gonna ride that thing?

XENA

Yup.

GABRIELLE

Well I suppose it beats trying to walk.

Gabrielle cautiously approached the creature. As she did it growled, causing her to jump back. Xena roughly grabbed the creature by the scruff of its neck. She leaned in and talked firmly to it.

XENA

Hey. Be nice.

The creature wined in response. Xena let go and motioned for Gabrielle to get on. Again Gabrielle carefully approached the creature. This time it just stood there and let her climb on its back with Xena. She gently held on to Xena, to not hurt her. Gabrielle knew even Xena was trying not to show it, that Xena was pretty injured.

XENA

Okay let's go. It's well past time to get out of this hell.

Xena got the creature moving. She and Gabrielle rode off towards the tower. Fortunately the creature that they got was an apex predator. So none of the other creatures bothered with them. It was a fairly easy ride the rest of the way to the tower. Finally they made it. Xena stopped the creature and they both got down. Both Xena and Gabrielle stood looking at the tower.

GABRIELLE

So do we just go inside?

XENA

If we're gonna figure out what's up with this tower, we have to. And hopefully once we get in there we'll finally have a way to end this nightmare one way or another.

Xena's arm was draped over Gabrielle's shoulders as Gabrielle helped to hold her up as they stood outside the tower Xena grabbed the handle to the large door and pulled it open.

XENA

Now to see what those Gods are hiding.

Both Xena and Gabrielle looked inside, but saw nothing but darkness.

GABRIELLE

I don't see anything.

XENA

We probably can't from out here. Come on.

Xena drew her sword as she and Gabrielle cautiously walked through the doorway and into the mysterious tower. As they did they were surprised by what they saw. Gabrielle looked around.

GABRIELLE

Where are we now? This doesn't seem like the inside of some old tower.

XENA

Yes. We thought that there was a portal inside the tower. But it looks like the the tower itself is a portal.

GABRIELLE

Yeah, but to where?

As Xena and Gabrielle looked around at their new surroundings, they could see that the place they found themselves in now was a stark difference between the environment of the outside. The new area they found themselves in looked nothing like an abandoned tower inside of a wasteland. But rather a room inside a palace. There was lavish furniture, statues, a bounty of food and all sorts of ritches. It was enough to make even the wealthiest man jealous. As Xena and Gabrielle took in this new area, Gabrielle noticed something about the statues that were decorating the large room.

GABRIELLE

Xena look. Aren't those statues of the Horae?

XENA

Looks like 'em. Maybe this is a temple of theirs.

GABRIELLE

But why would they make a portal that would bring us to one of their temples?

XENA

That's something I would like to know.

GABRIELLE

You think this could be Eirene's doing? I mean you did say that she's different from the other two.

XENA

Possibly. But why would she bring us here?

EUNOMIA

We would also like to know the answer to that question.

Xena and Gabrielle turned to see that the Horae had appeared. Both Dike and Eunomia had very angry looks on their faces as they looked at Eirene. Eirene looked very nervous as she tried to explain her actions to the other goddesses.

EIRENE

Well that was the deal. If they could make it to the portal, they could leave the Abyss. And I thought I'd bringing them here because I knew that you two didn't want them to really go free.

DIKE

So you thought you'd just bring them to our temple?! You knew the plan, so why make a portal at all?!

Eirene spoke quite as she looked down.

EIRENE

It's just that I don't think that we should've lied about that. It didn't seem fair. We were already punishing someone just because she's with Xena. Which seemed very unfair.

DIKE

(Angry tone) Yes and you took it upon yourself to do something about that too now didn't you?

EUNOMIA

I guess this is what we get when we trust someone who's so soft.

Dike and Eunomia looked at Xena and Gabrielle.

EUNOMIA

But we can deal with you later. First we need to decide what we do with these two now.

DIKE

Agreed. Simply sending them back to the Abyss doesn't seem like enough.

EUNOMIA

If I recall wasn't sending them there in the first place Eirene's idea?

DIKE

Yes. Both you and I were simply going to execute them right away.

EIRENE

But that would've been real justice or good order.

Dike glared at Eirene.

DIKE

You do not get to speak right now! We will discuss your punishment for this afterwards.

Eirene meekly stood there as she looked down at the floor.

EIRENE

I'm sorry.

Gabrielle and Xena quietly spoke to each other as the Dike and Eunomia berated Eirene.

GABRIELLE

You were right the other two don't seem to respect her much at all. I kinda feel bad for her. Should we say something?

XENA

Not yet.

GABRIELLE

You're just gonna let this go on? I get that she's a God, but this still feels wrong.

XENA

Don't worry we'll chime in when the times right.

GABRIELLE

What exactly are we waiting for?

XENA

This all going the way I thought it would. Just follow my lead and we should be back in the normal world again soon.

GABRIELLE

(Sighs) Okay. I just hope we don't have to watch this for too much longer.

Xena looked at the expression on Eirene's face. She looked like she was on the brink of tears as Eunomia and Dike continued to scold and talk down to her.

XENA

I don't think we'll be waiting for too long.

After silently watching the goddesses for a bit longer, Xena began to see a slightly different look in Eirene's eyes.

XENA

There it is.

GABRIELLE

There what is?

XENA

Get a good look at Eirene. Up until now she's been meek and timid compared to the other two.

GABRIELLE

What does that mean? She looks the same to me.

XENA

No look at her eyes Gabrielle. There's a fire that wasn't there before. It looks like she's finally tired of being pushed around.

GABRIELLE

Is that what you were waiting for?

XENA

It is.

GABRIELLE

I don't get it, why?

XENA

Talking to her would've worked until she was ready to stand up for herself.

GABRIELLE

So now what?

XENA

We just give her the final push that she needs.

GABRIELLE

How?

Xena motioned for Gabrielle to follow her lead as she walked a little closer to the group of goddesses.

XENA

You know it sounds to me like these two don't seem to take you seriously Eirene. You're just gonna let them talk to you like that? Doesn't seem very godlike to me.

Eirene looked at Xena. Surprised by what she had said.

EIRENE

I...

DIKE

Silence mortal!

EUNOMIA

Who are you to interfere in the matters of the gods.

Xena glanced at Gabrielle, signaling for her to join in.

GABRIELLE

do you let them treat you like this? If anything I think you're probably the strongest one out the three of you.

EIRENE

Really?

Eunomia looked at Eirene.

EUNOMIA

You're not actually listening to these mortals are you?

XENA

What's wrong with that? I mean one of you has to be the strongest. That's just how things work.

DIKE

(Laughing) And you think it's Eirene? She's the goddess of peace. How can she possibly be stronger then either Eunomia or myself?

XENA

So which one of the two of you is it then?

DIKE

Nice try. You must think we're fools. We see what you're doing. You're really trying to turn us against one another?

Gabrielle gave Xena a slight look of concern. Thinking that Xena's plan had failed. But Xena just calmly continued on.

XENA

Not at all. We're not doing anything. I'm simply making an observation. You're the ones who look down on one of your own. I mean you did just say that it was a ridiculous thought that Eirene was the strongest one of you.

Eirene turned to face the other goddesses.

EIRENE

Why is that such an outlandish idea?

Dike and Eunomia looked at each other for a moment.

DIKE

Because it's you.

EIRENE

(annoyed tone) What's that supposed to mean?

DIKE

How could a God of peace possibly be the most powerful? There's no need. It's not as if you do much.

EIRENE

(Annoyed tone) I don't do much?

Xena and Gabrielle could see Eirene becoming more upset and angry as the other Horae continued to overlook her.

GABRIELLE

I don't know. From what I've seen, peace can be very hard to not just achieve, but maintain.

EIRENE

Exactly.

EUNOMIA

Did you just agree with THEM?

DIKE

I always knew that she was the weakest of us, but this is just pathetic. Just like you.

EUNOMIA

I can't believe we're stuck working with you.

DIKE

We really need to do something about your weakness. This is just too far. You're just...

EIRENE

Enough!

Both of the other goddesses stopped speaking and looked at Eirene, stunned by her outburst. Gabrielle looked at Xena who just motioned to watch the Horae.

EIRENE

(Angery tone) I am not weak. And I'm tired of you two treating me as if I'm less than your equal. I'm just as much a part of this group as either of you. And I'm done doing things that I'm not okay with.

DIKE

Like what? What have we supposedly made you do that you're so against?

Eirene pointed to Gabrielle.

EIRENE

Well for starters she shouldn't even be here at all.

EUNOMIA

We already went over this and decided that...

EIRENE

No you decided! Neither of you would even listen to anything I said. And that's how it always is. The two of you make the decisions and I'm supposed to just go along. And when I do make a decision you just overturn it and do what you want anyway. Well I'm done.

DIKE

You're done? What does that mean, you're done?

EIRENE

It means I'm not letting either of you tell me what to do anymore.

Gabrielle whispered to Xena to not draw attention to themselves just yet.

GABRIELLE

It looks like your plan worked.

Dike and Eunomia gave Eirene a disapproving look.

EUNOMIA

I think someone's forgotten their place.

EIRENE

(Annoyed tone) My place?

DIKE

I think a little reminder is in order.

Eunomia and Dike begin to form orbs of power in their hands. Seeing this Eirene began to do the same.

EIRENE

I may be the goddess of peace but for you two I'll make an exception.

Xena grabbed Gabrielle.

XENA

We need to move.

Both she and Gabrielle quickly got behind one of the large statues in the room. And from there they watched as the fight between the God's was about to begin.

The now fractured group of goddesses stood against each other. Due to Eunomia and Dike's treatment of her and with a little "encouragement" from Xena and Gabrielle, Eirene had decided that she was no longer going to allow the other two goddesses to treat her as their lesser. Now all three were preparing to fight. With Eunomia and Dike vs Eirene. Meanwhile Xena and Gabrielle were taking cover behind a large statue that was in the goddesses temple. They looked on as Xena's plan for their escape from the Abyss was now in motion. Dike and Eunomia were preparing to launch their attacks.

DIKE

This is your last chance to stand down Eirene.

ENOMIA

Don't make us hurt you.

EIRENE

Stop talking down to me!

Eirene yelled as she launched the first attack at the other two goddesses. As soon as she did, Eunomia and Dike unleashed their own attacks. All 3 balls of energy collided in the middle of the room. Sending a Shockwave throughout the whole large area. Xena and Gabrielle hunkered down, realizing that this fight was going to be very chaotic.

XENA

We need to make sure we stay low and out of the way.

GABRIELLE

Right.

Dike smirked at Eirene.

EUNOMIA

Wow you actually stopped both of our attacks.

DIKE

I'm almost impressed. But I think we've entertained your little temper tantrum long enough.

Every insulting and condescending comment only made Eirene become madder. But Eunomia and Dike knew this and continued to insult her.

DIKE

(Condescending tone) Oh is someone mad?

EIRENE

I warned you to stop talking down to me. I won't say it again.

EUNOMIA

Why don't you try and make us. Oh wait, you can't.

Dike and Eunomia looked at each other for a moment as if agreeing on what to do next. Then they both held out a hand, aiming at Eirene.

DIKE

Time to put an end to this.

Then both Dike and Eunomia began launching attack after attack at Eirene. They were relentless. It was all Eirene could do but fend off their attacks. As she did the orbs landed all over including just barely missing Xena and Gabrielle. And destroying the building around them.

GABRIELLE

If this keeps up too much longer we're gonna have come this far just to end up getting killed as collateral damage.

XENA

I know. I need to do something.

GABRIELLE

You realize that getting directly involved in this will only get you killed even quicker.

XENA

Oh I'm aware.

Xena took out her chakrum.

GABRIELLE

So what do you plan on doing?

XENA

This!

Xena threw her chakrum at one of the walls. It ricocheted off and came flying towards Dike, who at the last moment saw it and just barely dodged it. But this forced her to stop attacking. And with less incoming fire on her, this allowed Eirene to not only launch a defensive attack against Eunomia's. But an offensive blast that took Eunomia by surprise. The attack hit, sending her flying back and crashing into one of the statues, making it crumble on top of her. Dike looked over at Eunomia in shock as Xena's chakrum came back to Xena.

XENA

That should speed things up.

GABRIELLE

I thought we didn't want the building coming down on us.

XENA

Don't worry they'll destroy each other before then.

GABRIELLE

I hope so.

After a minute Eunomia rose from the rubble. And she did not look happy. All the fighting had stopped for the moment. She walked over to Dike and grabbed her by the shirt.

EUNOMIA

(Angry /annoyed tone) You know you could've just used your other hand to catch or deflect that thing.

DIKE

Sorry. It was in the heat of the moment. I didn't think of that.

Eunomia smacked Dike hard.

EUNOMIA

Are you seriously just as stupid as Eirene.

EIRENE

I can hear you.

The two goddesses looked at Eirene.

DIKE / EUNOMIA

Stay out of this!

Eunomia turned back to Dike.

EUNOMIA

We can finish dealing with her in a moment. But first you.

DIKE

I said I was sorry. And I don't appreciate you smacking me like that.

EUNOMIA

Well I don't appreciate being blasted by little miss peace over there. So keep it together.

Dike glared at Eunomia briefly, before turning her attention back to Eirene. And with that the fighting resumed.

GABRIELLE

I don't think that worked.

XENA

Oh it worked. Just give it a little time.

GABRIELLE

What were you trying to do anyway?

XENA

Exactly what happened.

GABRIELLE

Ooohhh. Now I get it.

Xena and Gabrielle continued to keep watch on the God's battle. Dike and Eunomia continued to face off against Eirene. Who dispite being out numbered was holding her own. This was beginning to seriously annoy Eunomia.

EUNOMIA

Why can't we beat her?

DIKE

I know. She shouldn't be this powerful.

EUNOMIA

Well maybe you should consider trying harder.

DIKE

Are you saying this is my fault?!

EUNOMIA

Well I know I'm putting MY all into this. And if we're going technical, you were the one who insulted Eirene way more than I did.

DIKE

(Sarcasm) Oh so it IS my fault. Then why don't you show me how it's done then.

Dike stopped fighting and backed off as she gestured for Eunomia to show her how she should be facing off against Eirene.

EUNOMIA

What do you think you're doing?! Don't just stand th... ugh!

With Eunomia distracted, Eirene landed a powerful hit on her and knocked Eunomia to the ground.

EIRENE

Not so easy when it's not two on one, is it?

Eunomia got back up. She looked at Dike.

EUNOMIA

What's your problem?! Why'd you stop helping?!

DIKE

(Sarcasm) Oh so I was helping.

EUNOMIA

Oh don't you use that sarcastic tone with me. You know full well what I meant.

DIKE

Give me a break. You know sometimes you're just as bad as Eirene. So winey over the most ridiculous things.

EUNOMIA / EIRENE

What?!

EUNOMIA

I'm nothing like Eirene. Take that back.

DIKE

Make me.

EIRENE

Are you both really going to keep insulting me?

EUNOMIA

I guess I have to knock some sense into both of you. Fine.

Xena and Gabrielle were still watching all of this as it happened. Gabrielle looked at Xena.

GABRIELLE

Wow these goddesses seem really petty, even for gods.

XENA

Well they did send you to be punished just for being associated with me. So I'm not the least bit surprised by this. In fact I was counting on this happening. Now we just wait for the Horae to all destroy each other.

Eunomia, Dike and Eirene had begun to face off in an all out fight. And both Xena and Gabrielle were caught in the middle. The goddesses magic flew all over the room, as they launched an all out assault and deflected each others attacks. The intense battle was causing significant damage to the building around them. But being immortals and jut being to wrapped up in their fight, the Goddesses either didn't notice or just didn't care. But for Xena and Gabrielle this was becoming a serious problem.

GABRIELLE

This is getting out of hand. They're destroying everything.

As Gabrielle spoke a chunk of the ceiling right above them fell. Fortunately Xena noticed it just in time and quickly pulled Gabrielle out of the way. Causing it to just barely miss hitting her. Gabrielle looked back at it for a moment.

GABRIELLE

Thanks. But that proves my point. If this keeps up and we're still here, this fight is gonna kill us. We have to do something.

XENA

I know

Xena looked over at the goddesses as they fought, trying to come up with an idea to get Gabrielle and herself to safety. She looked around and saw the door that they had come in.

XENA

If we can get to that door we can get out of the line of fire. Ironically we're probably safer back out there than if we stay in here right now.

GABRIELLE

What about the portal back home?

XENA

We don't even know if there is one. And we can't really look for it in the middle of all this. So we leave for now until the battles over.

GABRIELLE

I beats being killed in here. Let's go.

Xena and Gabrielle quickly and carefully began making their way to the door. Avoiding any stray attacks or falling rubble. Gabrielle reached the door first and grabbed the handle. But just as she did a ball of energy struck the door and blasted her back.

XENA

Gabrielle!

Xena quickly ran over to her.

GABRIELLE

I'm okay.

Gabrielle slowly sat up.

EUNOMIA

You're not going anywhere. I'll deal with the two of you momentarily.

EIRENE

Did you just try and kill an innocent person?

EUNOMIA

Innocent? Oh please. I thought we went over this. Anyone who would ally themselves with someone like Xena could hardly be called innocent.

EIRENE

And the fact that you don't see anything wrong with that logic says everything. You're sense of order is severely warped. It's the same for Dike's views of justice.

EUNOMIA

Oh and I suppose your thoughts on peace are flawless.

EIRENE

No. I realize now that there are some things worth fighting for. And that's what I'm doing now. GAH!

Suddenly Eirene was hit from behind with a power blast. She dropped to her knees and looked over her shoulder. There she saw Dike with a smug smirk on her face.

EIRENE

That... was a cheep shot.

DIKE

It's not my fault you weren't paying attention.

Dike then launched another attack, striking Eirene again. Then another and another. Soon Eunomia joined in and began pelting Eirene with a barrage of attacks. Figuring taking out Eirene first would make things easier for her later. Xena and Gabrielle looked on at the brutal assult.

GABRIELLE

I can't watch this. We have to do something Xena. I know she's a God but she tried to help us. We can't just let them do this.

XENA

We're not. Stay here.

GABRIELLE

What are you...

Before Gabrielle could finish Xena lept to the side of the room as she let out her battle cry. She winsed as she landed, still very injured. She was running on pure adrenaline. She had been quietly preparing for this. Though she knew with her current state she wouldn't be able to keep it up for long. Maybe a few minutes at most. But hopefully that would be enough. Both Dike and Eunomia stopped attacking as they looked at Xena. Xena smirked at them.

XENA

What, you didn't expect me to join sit on the sidelines did you? I mean we are all here because of me. And now I think it's time for me to get in on all the action.

Xena readied her sword.

XENA

So, who's first.

Eunomia and Dike scowled at Xena. Then they both threw out an attack at her. Xena just managed to dodge. Then both of the goddesses began unleashing multiple attacks. Xena ran a took cover behind a broken pillar. She could see Gabrielle from there. Gabrielle gave her a questioning look, wondering what Xena was doing. Then Xena motioned towards Eirene. Gabrielle shrugged, unsure of what Xena wanted her to do at first. Xena pointed at Gabrielle then to Eirene. Then it clicked with Gabrielle what Xena had in mind. Gabrielle nodded confirming that she understood. Then she stealthily raced towards Eirene. Meanwhile Xena made sure to hold Dike and Eunomia's attention on her. Gabrielle got to Eirene.

GABRIELLE

Come on.

She helped Eirene up and they began walking back to where she and Xena were taking cover.

EIRENE

What are you doing?

GABRIELLE

Helping you.

EIRENE

Why? I'm part of the reason why you've even in this mess.

GABRIELLE

You didn't want any of this to happen. You were just doing what you were told.

EIRENE

But if I had taken a stand earlier.

GABRIELLE

Doesn't matter. You can't change the past. What matters is what you choose to do now.

Eirene glanced over at Xena who was facing off against the other two goddesses.

EIRENE

Something tells me that you've said that sort of thing before.

Gabrielle knew what Eirene meant.

GABRIELLE

Something like that.

EIRENE

I understand now.

Gabrielle got Eirene and herself back behind cover. Then she peaked out to see where Xena was. But just as she did Xena came flying back and smacked into the wall behind them.

GABRIELLE

Xena!

Gabrielle ran over to her. Xena struggled to move at all. All the adrenaline had worn off and she was now back feeling the full effects of all her previous injuries along with the pain of just being thrown into a wall. Gabrielle looked at her.

GABRIELLE

What were you thinking? You knew that you were in no shape to fight. Let alone against two gods. I get that you're an amazing fighter. But even you have your limits Xena.

Xena just smiled at her.

XENA

Everything's fine.I did exactly what I set out to do.

Xena looked over at Eirene.

XENA

I have another proposition for you.

EIRENE

What, I can't just take Gabrielle out of here right now. I'm sorry.

XENA

There'll be time for that later. But what if we make a deal, you let both Gabrielle and myself go free and I'll help you defeat Eunomia and Dike.

GABRIELLE

How are you going to do anything in the state your in? If you try to fight them like this you'll die Xena. You can't do this.

Xena smiled at Gabrielle.

XENA

That's where she comes in.

Xena looked at Eirene.

XENA

So do we have a deal?

Eirene looked at Xena, who could barely even stand at the point. She couldn't imagine what Xena could possibly do in her current state. Meanwhile Dike and Eunomia have resumed their fight. Deciding that Eirene wasn't a threat. So they focused on each other, both figuring they could just finish her off afterwards. Along with Xena and Gabrielle.

XENA

So what do you say?

Eirene looked at the on going battle between her former group. She might not have known what Xena had planned, but she knew that Xena knew what she was doing.

EIRENE

Okay. I'll do it.

XENA

Good. Now let's get started. We don't have much time, I doubt they'll keep each other occupied for long and they'll turn their attention back on us soon.

EIRENE

What do you need me to do?

XENA

Can you heal injuries?

EIRENE

My own no. But I can restore you completely.

XENA

Do it.

EIRENE

Okay.

Eirene put her hands on Xena and preceded to heal all of Xena's injuries. Gabrielle kept watch on the other goddesses as Eirene worked. Before long Xena was completely healed. All of her energy and strength was restored as well. It had been a while since Xena had felt this refreshed. Though she noticed that something felt different. Eirene could see the curious expression on Xena's face.

EIRENE

Don't worry, I merely gave you a small portion of my power. Temporarily of course. You won't have any actual powers, but you're already impressive abilities have been amplified. You're strength, agility, speed, senses are all increased. This should give you a much better chance at defeating Eunomia and Dike. But it won't last for long so we have to get started.

XENA

Understood.

Xena began to turn to face the other goddesses.

XENA

Oh Eirene.

EIRENE

Yes.

XENA

Thank you.

Eirene simply nodded in approval as she and Gabrielle stood beside Xena.

XENA

Gabrielle, I'm afraid you're not going to be able to do much right now.

GABRIELLE

Yeah, yeah I'll go get behind cover. Just be careful Xena. Remember you might have some more power, but you're still mortal.

XENA

I know.

Gabrielle went and ducked behind some fallen pillars and watched everything play out from there. And so Xena and Eirene prepared to fight Dike and Eunomia.

XENA

Hey!

The two goddesses paused their battle and looked at Xena.

XENA

Now don't go leaving us out of all the fun.

EUNOMIA

Silence, we said you'd be delt with shortly.

Using her powers, Eunomia threw large piece of a broken statue at Xena. Xena didn't move. Instead she held out her hand and caught it with ease. Leaving both Eunomia and Dike stunned.

EUNOMIA

How?

Dispite knowing that she had amplified abilities right now, even Xena was a little surprised at just how much more powerful she was. But she didn't have time to be impressed. She only had a short time to with this power and there was no time to waste. Xena dropped the debris and lept over to Dike and Eunomia, landing between them.

XENA

I think it's time to end this.

Before either of the Goddesses could respond, Xena quickly jumped up and kicked both of them, sending them flying back. They crashed to the ground.

DIKE

What in Tartarus?

Eunomia glanced at Eirene who had a satisfying smile on her face.

EUNOMIA

Eirene. She must've giving Xena some power.

Dike gave an annoyed grumble as both goddesses got up.

DIKE

Fine Xena if you really want to die so badly. Prepare yourself.

Dike and Eunomia began launching their attacks at Xena and Eirene. Eirene deflected their attacks, allowing Xena to close in to strike. Which was exactly what Xena did. She jumped in punching Eunomia,, dropping her to the ground. Then she quickly spun around and kicked Dike off her feet as well.

XENA

Not so good against someone who can actually stand up to you are ya?

Neither goddess was pleased with Xena's comment or the whole situation in general.

DIKE

Know you're place mortal!

Dike threw out a ball of energy at Xena, who quickly drew her sword and swung, knocking the attack right back. Dike dove out of the way. But Eunomia didn't react in time and the attack hit. The force sent her crashing into the wall behind them. Dike looked back at her.

DIKE

That was close. Too bad you're so slow Eunomia.

EIRENE

Pay attention!

Before Dike knew what was happening, she was hit with a powerful blast from Eirene.

DIKE

Gah.

Dike was also sent flying back and smacked into the wall, landing next to Eunomia.

XENA

You're out classed. If you're smart you'll just surrender now.

DIKE

I am a god. I will never yield to a mortal. Especially you, Xena!

And so the battle continued. Dike and Eunomia rose back up and continued to fight against Xena and Eirene. But Xena was right, neither of the goddesses stood a chance against them. And soon that fact became abundantly clear to both Eunomia and Dike. The tired goddesses stood before Xena and Eirene.

DIKE

It makes no sense. How can any one mortal best a god?

EUNOMIA

Clearly Xena's reputation doesn't measure up to the real thing.

XENA

Flattery will get you nowhere. Just surrender. You've lost. Now both me and Gabrielle are leaving this place. And Eirene is going to take us back. What you decide to do once we leave is up to you. But I highly recommend that you leave us out of it.

EUNOMIA

Very well Xena, you win.

DIKE

What?! I refuse to...

EUNOMIA

Just stop Dike. It's over. As much as I don't want to agree with her, Xena's right. If we keep this up we're just gonna end up getting killed. Okay Xena both you and Gabrielle are free to go. But be sure that we'll be watching you.

XENA

That's fine.

Gabrielle came out from where she was taking cover. She walked over to Xena.

GABRIELLE

Is it really over? You're finally free to go?

XENA

Guess so.

Gabrielle looked at Eirene.

GABRIELLE

Thank you for helping us Eirene. We couldn't have done this without you.

Eirene smiled as she nodded. Xena looked at Gabrielle.

XENA

Ready to go?

GABRIELLE

Do you really need to ask?

XENA

(Joking) Just making sure.

EIRENE

Okay you two ready for me to take you back?

As Xena, Gabrielle and Eirene spoke for a bit, Dike glared at Eirene.

DIKE

(Thinking to herself) Damn you Eirene. And you Xena. You think you can just defy the God's and do whatever you want. I am the Goddess of justice. And I will make certain that justice is served.

As Xena and Gabrielle spoke with Eirene, Eunomia was standing by, trying to determine what the group of goddesses would do now.

EUNOMIA

(Thinking to herself) Maybe Eirene was right. I suppose both Dike and myself have been a little harsh towards her. And perhaps we should look at how we judge those we punish. I think Xena deserves to be punished for her past misdeeds, but I suppose her judgment can wait until she dies. Given her life style how long can that take. Although it IS Xena. So I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. But in the meantime what do WE do.

She looked up the other goddesses. Wondering what these events meant for the Horae as a whole. We're they no longer a group or could they fix their problems and go back to seeing that justice, order and peace was preserved. As Eunomia thought, she saw Dike begin slowly raising her hand, taking aim at Eirene, who was completely unaware.

DIKE

Damn you Eirene, this is all your fault! No one escapes justice! You hear me, no one! Not even you!

Before Eirene, Xena or Gabrielle knew what was happening, Dike launched a huge ball of energy right at them. Eirene quietly shoved Xena and Gabrielle out of the way.

GABRIELLE

Eirene!

Just as the attack was about to hit, Eirene saw something get between the her and Dike's attack.

EIRENE

Eunomia?

Eunomia just smiled at Eirene as the attack landed. A bright light fleshed and then Dike's attack was gone, as was Eunomia. Eirene watched as only small particles of light came floating towards the ground and faded away. Eunomia, the Goddess of good order was no more.

EIRENE

No, Eunomia!

Xena and Gabrielle saw a look of pure anger in Eirene's eyes as she looked over at Dike. Who was also stunned by what had just transpired.

DIKE

Why did she... Damn it Eunomia.

EIRENE

Dike, why?

XENA

I guess she couldn't accept defeat. And in a rage tried to kill the three of us in one shot. Clearly Eunomia saw the attack coming and wanting to protect you, put herself in its path.

EIRENE

Eunomia did care. No...

Tears begin to fill Eirene's eyes.

DIKE

Well at least this time I won't miss.

Dike launched another attack at Eirene.

GABRIELLE

Eirene look out!

But the goddess didn't move at all. She just looked at the incoming attack.

XENA/ GABRIELLE

Eirene!

Eirene stood in the path of Dike's attack that had just been launched directly at her. Tears still in her eyes after only moments earlier Eunomia had sacrificed herself to stop Dike from killing her. Xena and Gabrielle looked on, unable to do anything to help.

EIRENE

You killing Eunomia. And you don't even seem to care. She sacrificed herself to save me. We were a team. She was my friend. I thought she was yours too. And you killed her.

Xena and Gabrielle saw a look of both sadness and anger in Eirene's eyes as she just stood directly in Dike's attacks path.

GABRIELLE

What's Eirene doing? If she doesn't move she'll be killed.

Gabrielle yelled to Eirene.

GABRIELLE

Eirene run!

Eirene kept looking straight ahead.

EIRENE

No.

Gabrielle looked at Xena.

GABRIELLE

What do we do?

XENA

There's nothing we can do. It's up to Eirene now.

GABRIELLE

But she's just standing there. It's like she lost her will to fight. Or even live.

XENA

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Look.

Gabrielle looked back at Eirene as the goddess put out her hand aiming at the incoming attack.

EIRENE

I never wanted any of this. Stop it now Dike.

DIKE

Oh enough. Theres no escaping this time now that Eunomia's gone. No one's here to protect you. So just shut up and die. Just like Eunomia.

That final comment was the last straw for Eirene. It was clear to her that Dike didn't care about killing her or even really Eunomia. Eirene stared directly at Dike and let out a loud sad yell. And then the large orb of energy paused in mid air for a second.

DIKE

How?

Eirene let out a second yell. And then the attack was launched right back at Dike at a much higher speed. Dike didn't have any time to try to avoid it.

DIKE

Eire...

Before Dike could even finish speaking, the attack hit. Dike instantly disintegrated into small particles of light. Suffering the very same fate that she had caused Eunomia to suffer mere minutes earlier. No trace of the goddess of justice remained. Dike was gone. Eirene was now the last of the Horae that remained. The lone goddess stood there silently for a bit.

GABRIELLE

Should we say something?

XENA

No just give her some space.

After a little while, Eirene walked over to Xena and Gabrielle.

EIRENE

I'm sure the two of you are more than ready to go home.

XENA

That's putting it lightly.

GABRIELLE

We're sorry for your loss.

Eirene gave her a sad smile.

EIRENE

Thank you. I know this might sound ridiculous, but dispite everything I still cared about both of them very much.

GABRIELLE

Makes sense. You were a group for who knows how long.

EIRENE

So long I've lost track. I can barely remember a time when we weren't the Horae. I guess somewhere along the way we lost sense of what we as a group were supposed to be. And that's how we ended up here. If only we had seen it sooner. Maybe then things would have played out differently.

XENA

Well we can't change the past, as much as we might want to. All we can do is learn from the mistakes we've made and do what we can to be better going forward.

EIRENE

I suppose you of all people would know that. But enough idle chatter. I think it's well past time to take the two of you home. Close your eyes.

Xena and Gabrielle did just that as Eirene raised her hand and a bright, blinding light filled the room. A moment later Eirene told them it was safe. As Xena and Gabrielle opened their eyes, they saw that they were back in the normal world. They were just outside of Athens.

XENA

We're really back.

EIRENE

Yes. Both you and Gabrielle are completely free. You'll never have to worry about the Horae again. You know since I'm the only one left.

GABRIELLE

We can't thank you enough Eirene. But what will you do now?

Eirene smiled as she looked out into the distance.

EIRENE

The Horae might be gone. But I'm still the goddess of peace. There's more then plenty for me to do. And thanks to you and Xena I have a much better understanding of what peace can be and how I can better achieve it.

XENA

Based on everything I've seen, you have your work cut out for you.

EIRENE

Guess I better get started then. But I know it'll be a little easier with you two out here helping the people who need it. Keep it up. This world needs more people like you.

Eirene turned towards Xena and Gabrielle.

EIRENE

Guess this is goodbye. Maybe we'll meet again someday.

GABRIELLE

I'd like that.

And so Eirene bid a final farewell to Gabrielle and Xena, and then she vanished.

GABRIELLE

So what do you wanna do now? I don't know about you, but I could use a nice bath, a hot meal and a good night's sleep./p

XENA

Sounds like a plan to me.

And with that Xena and Gabrielle made their way into Athens. They were finally free once more. And had not only survived some of the repercussions of Xena's past. But put a stop to the vengeful gods bent on destroying the both of them. And found their way out of their prison. A place known as the Abyss.

THE END ❤
