A/N: Sorry, Guys, this is a short chapter. I have so much going on right now, I'm having a problem finding time to write! Please bear with me.
"I really have to learn how to duck… you're REEEAAALLLYYYY hot." Kara was high on pain killers, and everything looked kinda shiny and amazing.
"How is it that we keep ending up in this situation," Alex asked. "One or the other of us high as kites with some kind of damaged body part? It's like someone is writing us in a damn action story!" She stopped then, hands on her hips. "I'm mad at you, Kara Zorel! You could have been killed jumping in front of that fucking bullet!"
The blonde pouted, bottom lip poking out. "But… I love you," she replied, as if that answered ALL questions EVER.
Which it kinda did.
Alex sighed. "I apparently can't stay mad for long."
"Good, because I need kisses," Kara said seriously. "Like copious numbers of kisses." She blinked. "Why are you not kissing me?"
The brunette pinched the bridge of her nose trying to hold back tears. "I'm just really upset right now, Babe."
"Alex," Kara said, trying to focus more, in light of this new piece of horrendous information. "C'mere." She patted the edge of the bed. "Please?" She winced a little as she scooted over to make room. Alex sat on the bed, lifted her legs up and leaned back on the pillows, careful not to jostle her girlfriend's bandaged shoulder. "Listen to me, Sweetheart. I just reacted. I saw the gun, saw where it was pointed, and just reacted. You would have done the same thing."
"I know," Alex breathed. "It's just... I don't want to lose you, Kara."
"I've been shot before," the blonde stated suddenly. "It's why I can't have children."
The brunette lieutenant shook her head, totally blindsided. "Wh-what?"
Kara looked down and put her hand on her stomach. "I was engaged to a really great guy. I was a probie, not long in the job, and my firehouse was called out to help the victim of a gang shooting but... everything went sideways. Turned out the shooter was still on the scene, and he started firing randomly at us. I was hit, in the abdomen. The bullet badly damaged my uterus and..." She shrugged. "The surgeon had no choice but to remove it." She closed her eyes and rubbed her stomach a little. "To make things worse, we were two months pregnant, but John and I didn't even know. It... what happened... destroyed us and we broke up six months later."
Kara's eyes were far away... lost in another time... another place but, when Alex's arms closed gently around her, she came back and leaned against her. "I can't even imagine how that must have felt, Kara. I'm so sorry."
"Shit, I wanted to do that over several bottles of wine," the blonde replied with a small chuckle. "I've always wanted kids, Alex, but the timing back then..." She shook her head. "I just sometimes wish I could have the choice now."
"Did you ever consider adopting?"
"I did," Kara nodded. "I even filled out the paperwork... but I didn't submit it." She looked at Alex then. "I think I was waiting for someone to adopt with." She laced their fingers together. "We haven't been together that long, but I love you and I can see us having kids together in the future."
"Are you sure you're not just saying that because you're high and hallucinating?" Alex asked with a teasing smile.
Kara closed her eyes and rested more comfortably against her. "Nah. I love you just as much when I'm sober."
That wasn't quite what Alex had meant, but she just chuckled and kissed the younger woman's temple. "I love you too."

Captain Jones and Captain Williams were standing together in the parking lot outside the NCFD Headquarters building. The investigator was very interested in what Jonn had to say about the suspect being a woman.
"Jonn, what if she's the wife or partner of a firefighter?"
Jonn rolled his eyes. "Then, Paul, the pool of suspects is just getting bigger, not smaller."
Williams nodded, pinching the bridge of his nose tiredly. He looked like he hadn't slept in days. "I feel like we need to set a trap."
"A trap?" the big captain replied in surprise. "Of what kind?"
"We can't predict when she's going to show up so maybe we just be prepared at each of Danvers' calls, in case she DOES show up."
"You're... suggesting we use Alex as bait?" Jones asked. "Kara will never go for that," he added in a mutter to himself.
"What choice do we have, Jonn?" Williams said, exasperated. He shook his head. "Look, I get it. Zorel doesn't want her girlfriend hurt. None of us do. But we're no closer to figuring out who this is. Besides..." He chuckled then. "Zorel is out of commission for a while. What she doesn't know... and all that."
Jones frowned. "Think about what you just said... and then replace Alex with yourself and Kara with your wife."
"Yeah, I kinda heard how stupid that was, as it was coming out of my mouth. Sorry," Williams winced. "Listen, let's just talk to Danvers and Zorel. See what their take is."
Captain Jones sighed heavily. "Alex will say yes, Kara will get mad... but then agree anyway because Alex will want to do it."
"We'll talk to them, Jonn, and I promise I'll go with whatever they want to do."
"Ok... I'll meet you at the hospital in an hour. We can talk to them IF Kara is up to it."

Mores and Lane were chatting as they washed the engine with warm, soapy water.
"It's weird without Kara and Alex here, isn't I?" Lane commented. "Much quieter."
Mores chuckled softly. "Sure is. They bring a lot of life to this house."
"I feel really bad for them," Lucy went on. "Whoever wants to hurt Alex is a psycho and it's really taking an emotional toll on them. Bones and flesh heal... but the scars are going to run deeper."
"Speaking of scars," Mores said softly. "That one Kara has on her stomach... do you get the impression this isn't the first time she's been shot? I've seen enough bullet wounds over my career to make me wonder."
Lane shrugged. "Maybe. I dunno. She doesn't talk about shit like that. Although," she added. "A bullet would probably bounce off her abs. SO fucking hot."
Megan laughed and threw a wet rag at her friend. "Seriously?"
"Come on," Lucy shrugged, throwing it back. "I have eyes."
"Yeah..." Mores eyes fixed on her friend's. "Yeah... you do."
Lane felt a little thrill run through her, but she cleared her throat and went back to washing the engine. "So... wanna get a drink later?"
Megan smiled a little. "I thought we weren't going to do that again, Luce."
Lucy wouldn't make eye contact this time. "It's just a drink, Meg."
Mores stepped closer to her, lowering her voice. "Last time you said that, you ended up coming around my fingers a couple times. If that's what you want, Lucy, just ask."
Lane looked around furtively. "I can't, Megan... James..."
Mores just shrugged and tossed her rag into the bucket of soapy water. Then she hopped down off the engine and headed for the stairs. "I need coffee, want some?"
"God, yes, please."
It gave Lucy a moment to breathe, to think without Megan's gorgeous brown eyes pinning her brain into a lustful holding pattern. She didn't know what she wanted. But she was starting to think... maybe it wasn't James.

Alex came out of her office and ambled into the kitchen to take a seat at the table. The team was there eating lunch, and they all looked expectantly at her as she blew out a long breath. "She's doing a lot better today. She sends her love and says to tell you all to not get soft while she's gone."
A round of eyerolls circled the table. "Of course she did," Winn laughed. "Jesus."
Alex's face sobered then. "So," she said. "I need to talk to you all about something."
"Go ahead," Vasquez nodded.
"I was approached by Captain Williams, the NCFD investigator. They still don't have a clue who's behind these attacks on me... on us... and they want me to basically be bait in a plan to set a trap for them. Kara and I talked about it and she's mad that I want to say yes, and that's another issue, but, the way I see it is... this person is after me, but this plan potentially puts us all in the line of fire and I don't want to say yes for sure without getting your agreement."
"What's the plan?" Brainy asked.
"Pretty simple actually," the lieutenant replied. "We carry on as usual except we'll be discreetly tailed by a police unit on every call. So, if our friend does show up, they'll be there to catch her and hopefully get this done and over with."
"Sounds simple enough," Brainy said. "I estimate a forty-five percent chance of succeeding."
Dark brows lifted and Alex looked around the table. "So, what do you think?"
Lane chuckled. "I don't think anyone at this table is going to say no to helping catch this son of a bitch."
Heads nodded and Alex felt something in her chest that made tears well in her eyes. "Thank you, Guys. Thank you so much."

It was Saturday. A month had passed but nothing had happened. Alex couldn't understand why. Kara was pacing back and forth in front of the couch, shoulder still bandaged and sling keeping her arm immobile.
"I'm going back to work," she stated.
Alex nodded, eyes still on the reports she had to review. "Sure, happy to have you back... as long as your surgeon signs off." She peeked up at her girlfriend.
Kara scowled.
Alex smirked. "Oh... sorry... you thought I'd just say yes baby? Sure, Baby?" She shook her head. "Nope."
"I hate you," Kara stated. Then she shook her head. "That's a big, fat lie."
"I know," the brunette chuckled. "Look, Kara, I know you're frustrated and bored and all the other things you've been complaining about for the last four weeks..."
Kara scowled again. "Huh."
"But Jonn is not going to let you come back until you get that sign-off." She got up then and went to her girlfriend, taking her by the hand and bringing her to the couch to sit down. "I'd really like to make out with you, rather than watch you pacing. Would that be ok?"
Kara's scowl disappeared, replaced by a grin. "Can THAT be my job from now on?"
"Oh hell yeah," Alex replied as she cupped her girlfriend's cheek and playfully ran the tip of her tongue along the seam of her lips. The blonde surged forward and kissed Alex passionately, starting a playful tongue duel that ended up making them laugh and hug each other close. Then they just traded lazy kisses until breathing became a little labored and the mood between them changed to something charged with electricity.
Alex shifted a little, smiling as her girlfriend tried to unbutton her shirt, but only having one hand made it difficult, so she helped a little. A black lace bra cupped her breasts and the blonde leaned closer to kiss the swell of them and down into her cleavage. "I love how soft your skin is," Kara murmured, eyes closed as she nuzzled between the brunette's breasts. "So gorgeous."
Alex stroked her fingers through soft, blonde hair. "You make me feel so special," she replied.
Blue eyes looked up at her, shining with joy. "You are." Kara said simply. Then she lowered her head again and nibbled her way across flimsy lace. "And I REALLY like this bra."
"Mmm... me too," the brunette replied on an uneven breath as her girlfriend's tongue ran over her nipple.
"Bed?"
"Are you sure?" Alex asked softly. They hadn't been intimate with each other since Kara had been shot, her injury and pain greatly limiting her range of motion. "I don't want to hurt you."
Kara chuckled softly. "I'm more than sure, Alex."
Hand in hand, they moved to the bedroom and the blonde sat on the bed, eyes glued to her lover as she slowly undressed, and grinning like a fiend when Alex tossed her bra at her. She rubbed the lace between her fingers and then set it aside as her girlfriend straddled her lap and pressed against her. Kara's hand slowly caressed down her back.
"How do you want to do this?" the brunette asked gently.
Kara leaned forward to rasp into her ear as she moved her good hand between Alex's thighs to stroke her. "Put your arms around me. We'll figure it out."
Alex laughed softly. "Yeah..." She wrapped Kara up in a hug and kissed her, loving how gentle her girlfriend was but then she sucked in a deep breath as seeking fingers pressed deftly to her clit. Kara's touch was firm and sure, and the brunette closed her eyes, slowly rocking against her.
"I love how wet you are for me."
Alex exhaled against her lover's neck as two fingers slipped inside her. "That feels so good."
"Touch yourself," Kara whispered. "I'm down a paw."
Alex groaned and gripped one hand into Kara's hair as her other roamed down her body, caressing her breasts and stomach and then down between her own legs to rub her clit. They found a rhythm and it didn't take long for the brunette to stiffen and then groan through an intense and deep orgasm. She bit down on Kara's neck as she shuddered hard and then, as it eased and released her, just rested her head on her shoulder.
They didn't say anything. Nothing needed to be said. They were in a cocoon of love that just left them with a feeling of contentment... until it didn't, and Alex lifted her head to gaze into her lover's eyes. "Lie back," she said, eyes half-lidded with desire as she got up. "I want to taste you."
Kara swallowed and then scooted back on the bed. The brunette crawled up her body and then slowly opened her jeans, smiling as the blonde lifted her hips to let her shimmy them down and off. "Drawer," Kara said shakily. "Can you...?"
Alex smiled sexily. "I definitely can..." She opened the drawer of the nightstand and took out a harness and toy, spending a few moments to secure the straps around her hips before moving to lie between Kara's legs and duck her head to tease and kiss her intimately. "Oh God," the blonde moaned. Alex's tongue was everywhere, and her hand came down to grasp into dark hair as she lifted her hips. The brunette's hands reached up under Kara's shirt and shoved up her bra to grab her breasts and squeeze.
The blonde lieutenant shuddered and bit her bottom lip, breathing ragged. Alex knew she was close and quickly crawled higher and rubbed the toy through her girlfriend's wetness before pushing deep inside her.
"Oh… fuck…" Kara gasped, eyes widening and then slamming shut again as Alex began moving inside her with a fast, sharp rhythm. She was on fire… so close that she could see stars forming behind her eyelids. And then the brunette was slowing down… a smile on her face as she drew her hips back… waited a beat and then pushed in again. Kara's eyes rolled back, and she groaned loudly. "You are killing me," she managed to get out.
"Ooohhh…" Alex deadpanned. "I can just stop if…"
"Don't you dare!" the blonde exclaimed, then grinned as her girlfriend kissed her teasingly and picked up her pace again.
Xx
"Only having one good hand sucks," Kara said softly as she caressed Alex's bare back.
"A couple more weeks and you'll be able to start physical therapy," the brunette lieutenant replied, propping her chin up on Kara's chest and looking up at her. "Just focus on the milestones, Honey."
"I know," the blonde nodded. "But you know how patient I am."
"As in not at all? Sure!" Alex cheerfully teased. She looked at her watch then. "I'm hungry. Want to help me make dinner?"
"Mmmm…" Kara agreed. "That would be awesome."
"Then I really need to finish looking those reports over."
Kara chuckled. "Sorry I distracted you from them."
Alex laughed softly, shaking her head as she got out of bed and slipped into sweatpants and a t-shirt. "I'm not sorry." She helped her girlfriend into shorts and a t-shirt and then led her into the kitchen to sit at the island. Being down a hand, Kara really couldn't be too much of a help, so Alex set about chopping and rinsing and mixing while the blonde poured them glasses of wine.
Then the doorbell rang, and Kara kissed Alex gently on the lips. "I'll get it."
She padded to the door and opened it, still smiling over her shoulder at her girlfriend.
In the kitchen, Alex was humming softly, not paying too much attention to what was happening in the hallway but then, she looked up to find Kara backing into the room, her one good hand raised.
"Babe, what are you…?" the brunette began, but she froze then as another figure, dressed all in black and pointing a gun, stepped into view.
"She's doing what she's told," the masked figure said. "And very wisely." The figure indicated that Kara should take a seat at the island, and she did as she was told without comment. Then the figure pointed their gun at Alex. "Hello, Alex Danvers. It's good to finally come face to face with the person who killed my son."
Alex just blinked as the figure slowly pulled their mask off. "No," she whispered. "No."
