Chapter 1: Medusa's Gorgon
It was a lovely sunny afternoon in the city of Magnolia. The residents were roaming the streets, doing their everyday tasks like running errands and visiting their neighbors with friendly hellos. In the Fairy Tail Guild, the atmosphere was just as uplifting as the city—minus the recklessness they would usually engage in.
Ariella was sitting at a table, humming softly as she was crafting a flower crown out of white daisies she had collected in a field the previous day. She was sure she would love it once she would complete it and try it on for herself. Aside from the daisies, Ari had also collected oak leaves that she would plan to use to make a crown for her beloved, Freed.
All of a sudden, she jolted at a crashing sound that came from nearby. She rose up from the table to witness Natsu and Gray wrestling on the floor, exchanging insults at one another as they were rolling around. Lucy was watching them from nearby, chastising them to stop. Unfortunately for the celestial wizard, her warnings fell on deaf ears as the two continued to argue.
"You're nothing more than an ice pop to me and I'll melt you with my fire!"
"Oh, yeah!? Well, I'll put you on ice to shut you up, you fire-breathing volcano!"
"Ice Princess!"
"Flame Brain!"
"ICE BOY!"
"Why, you—DON'T CALL ME ICE BOY!"
"Natsu! Gray!" a voice called out to them, forcing the two male wizards to put their squabbling to a halt.
That came from no other than Erza, the scarlet-haired S-Class mage who would settle Natsu and Gray each time they would get into a fight. She had been doing so since the three of them were children.
"That's enough from both of you. Your shouting is disrupting Ariella of her work," she chastised them in a stern tone of voice. Her leering brown eyes were intimidating both of them, as they hated having to face her wrath when they would squabble.
"S-Sorry, Erza…," Natsu and Gray stammered, their bodies trembling with fear.
"Seriously, why can't you two just get along?" Lucy asked them with a sigh. "Your arguments are one of a few reasons why our reward money goes down the drain when we go out on jobs. And it's another reason why I'm struggling to pay my rent!"
Ariella shook her head, as because they can't help but engage in their silly arguments and end up facing Erza's fury. She was glad Erza was there to deal with them, since it was her job and Ari would not take that from her.
Erza clearly means it when she glares at them, she thought. Although, I do feel bad for Lucy for her finances…
Just when Ari was about to resume her work, another crashing sound was heard. This time, it came from nearby the bar, where Juno was getting into a tiff with Bickslow and Lisanna was trying to mediate them, but to no avail.
Oh, dear, what has she done now? Ari wondered with a sigh.
Juno and Bickslow were at each other's throats as they exchanged insults at one another, their bodies wrangling on the floor. Drinks were spilled on the floor, and next to the spills were two mugs where the drinks were from.
"You're an oversized, bad-mouthing oaf who cares about nothing but your silly dolls and my best friend!"
"You're a little weed who doesn't keep growing in height, and with your kiddish attitude!"
"KID?! I'm a tomboyish lady!"
"You're no lady! You're still a kid even though you've aged seven years later!"
Lisanna was sadly stuck in the middle, as a result of the fight having just broken out. She attempted to coax them into talking over it peacefully; however, that didn't work and she resorted to begging them to stop.
"Come on, you two! Please, stop this fighting!" she pleaded.
"STAY OUT OF THIS!" both Mages shouted, startling the Animal Soul Mage.
"Don't you talk to my girlfriend like that, you monkey!"
"Well, don't YOU talk to my best friend like that, Bick-smelly!"
As they continue to argue and wrestle with each other, Lisanna quietly stepped away from them, as she had run out of options and she did all she could to stop them from fighting.
"What's going on here, Lisanna?" Ariella asked her.
"Oh, Ari. Thank goodness you're here," Lisanna said, sighing in relief. "I've tried everything to settle Juno and Bickslow down, but they just keep bickering. Can you put a stop to them, please?"
"Of course."
Bickslow and Juno were now up from the floor and their foreheads were pressing against one another, their glares remaining on their faces. In the midst of their growling, Ariella stepped in between them and carefully separated them by pushing them aside.
"Stop it!" she chided them.
Bickslow and Juno turned to Ari, having had just stopped their quarreling because of her. They were staring at her with perplexed expressions on their faces, wondering what she was doing here and why.
"Who started all of this commotion?" she asked them, her hands placed on her hips.
Bickslow and Juno immediately pointed their fingers at one another, as they said all at once:
"Her!"
"Him!"
Realizing that they had blamed it on each another at the same time, they glared once again as sparks began to fly from their eyes.
"Me?! You're the one who started it!" they both shouted altogether.
Lisanna and Ari both sighed, frustrated about the blame game Bickslow and Juno were playing. So much for trying to resolve it peacefully…
"Now what do we do?" Lisanna asked her.
"We can't give up. There has to be a way for them to put an end to this fighting, and have them make up," Ari said to her.
Just then, they heard a familiar voice ask them, along with footsteps coming from the entrance to the guild.
"What seems to be the problem here?"
It turned out to be Laxus, who had returned from an intense day of training. Along with him were two of his teammates, Freed and Evergreen.
"Laxus!" Lisanna and Ariella exclaimed.
Bickslow and Juno turned to see Laxus, having just stopped their squabbling. They would soon be in for an intimidating questioning session with him, by the looks of his unamused frown and his muscular arms folded like a sergeant.
"Oi, boss. Welcome back," the Seith Possession Mage said to him. "How was your training?"
"Tense, as I always prefer," he answered. His grey eyes leered at the two Mages as he inquired them sternly:
"Tell me who started this ridiculous fight, and don't play the blame game on each other."
Almost immediately, Bickslow and Juno pointed their fingers at one another once more, earning dismayed groans from Ari and Lisanna.
"Ugh…," Laxus groaned, slapping a hand onto his forehead as he shook his head.
"I swear, these two are fighting constantly like a pair of immature children," Evergreen grimaced, as she waved her fan in front of her face.
"Indeed," Freed said to her, nodding in concord.
"Alright, Lisanna. Tell me what caused them to start fighting," Laxus inquired Lisanna.
"Uh… Bickslow and Juno were arguing over how much Juno has changed over the past seven years," Lisanna answered him, sounding apprehensive.
"Seriously?" the Lightning Dragon Slayer grimaced. He turned to Juno and Bickslow and hoisted them up by the backs of their tops, and he gave them an icy stare that would bring chills up their spines.
"If you two can't stop fighting over little things, I will have to mash your heads… or zap you both to a crisp," he snarled. "Understood?"
"Y-Yes, boss," Bickslow answered with a gulp.
"W-Whatever you say," Juno replied, also gulping.
Laxus released them from his grasp, dropping them to the floor. He could hear them groan in pain from being dropped, and to him, perhaps they would learn to get along as long as he were here to mediate them.
Master Makarov made his way through the crowd of Fairy Tail members, holding a job request in his hand. His appearance was enough to grab everyone's attention, including Juno and Bickslow.
"What's going on now, Gramps?" Laxus asked his grandfather. "Another job?"
"Oooh, we've been busy with work since winning the Grand Magic Games!" Evergreen exclaimed. "It feels so good for our guild to bask in the former glory!"
"Yes, indeed," Freed said with a nod.
"We have an incoming request coming from Oak Town, and it's urgent," Makarov said in a blunt tone of voice.
"A job request from Oak Town?" Ari wondered aloud. "What do they want us to do for them?"
"There is dark guild that's under the control of Tartaros, and it is called Medusa's Gorgon," Makarov explained to the Mages. "Over the course of three days, they have committed robberies in three of Oak Town's businesses and homicides of five women, all of which are wizards. It is your job to put a stop to them before they continue to commit more of these heinous crimes."
"Bringing these dark guilds to justice is what we do best!" Bickslow boasted with a confident grin.
"We're on it, Gramps," Laxus said, taking the request from his grandfather. "We'll make sure to take down Medusa's Gorgon as soon as we find them."
The job request's details sparked Ariella's curiosity, and she wished to learn more of the Medusa's Gorgon guild and its motives behind their latest schemes.
I wonder why this guild has murdered five female wizards over the past three days, she thought to herself. It is unfortunate of these women to have lost their lives to them, and as a Fairy Tail wizard, I will make sure to make Medusa's Gorgon regret their actions.
"Master," she spoke up to Makarov. "Allow me to go with them. I need to find out the reason why Medusa's Gorgon killed these five female mages."
"Count me in too!" Juno added, raising her hand. "I'm gonna kick their butts so hard, they won't know what hit them."
Ohh, great. Now the pesky kid wants to go too?! Bickslow thought, his lips forming into an unamused frown. He shook his head and muttered lowly of her, dismayed by Juno's decision to tag along.
"Don't get too cocky, brat," Laxus reminded the tomboy, making her frown. "They might look easy for us to beat, but they might have some strong wizards, so it's best to not let your guard down."
"Laxus is right," Freed said with a nod. "We need to analyze their strengths and weaknesses first before taking them on."
"And recklessly charging at them won't work," Evergreen added, leering at Juno.
"I'll take you along with us, Juno, but on one condition," Ariella said to her sister. "You must not start any fights with Bickslow. At all."
"You heard her," Bickslow crooned with a mischievous grin. "You gotta listen to your big sister if you want to keep going on jobs with us."
"Listen, listen," his babies parroted, hovering around their owner.
Juno pouted, her arms folded across her chest. She had always refused to obey others' orders since joining the guild, as she would rather do her own thing.
Ariella sighed lowly and shook her head once more, disbelieved by her sister's obstinate nature.
There has to be a way to get Juno to listen, or she'll be banned from going on jobs with Laxus and his team! she thought. We'll have to figure this out when we partake on this job.
Makarov cleared his throat, before handing out a written list to his grandson. It contained the three businesses that had been burglarized by Medusa's Gorgon, and they were: a jewelry shop called Minette Jewelers; a luxury goods shop known as Grier & Bosworth; and a shoe shop named Zakuro Shoe Warehouse.
"Very well, then. Here's the list of businesses that have been robbed. Go directly to the owners and get information on Medusa's Gorgon. A train will be waiting for you in one hour, so have your belongings ready and be on time."
"Yes, sir!" all six mages said to him, and with that, they headed out to prepare themselves for what could be a tough job, but they were confident that they would succeed.
Meanwhile, somewhere near Shirotsume, a grand fortress built of stone was standing tall as the fog was rolling by on a moonlit night. A sign at the front of the entrance had "MEDUSA'S GORGON" in large purple letters, and two statues of a Medusa were on each side of a cobblestone path that would lead to the doors. There was a sign on one of the doors that read "MEN ONLY" and the words were printed in red letters. Out of all the dark guilds across Earthland, Medusa's Gorgon was Fiore's sole male-only dark guild and it had a horrid reputation for targeting female mages and murdering them. It was simply because they despised them, and they believed that male wizards ranked superior in magic power and strength compared to the females.
A large group of men were gathered around in a throne room, where their master was sitting like a king on his throne, which was carved out of obsidian stone in the shape of a snake's mouth. The master was a muscular, middle-aged brute with tan skin, powder blue hair that was tied in a high spiky ponytail, amber eyes that would resemble those of a snake, and a sinister smile that would terrify those who look directly at him. His name was Viper, and he held the title of "The Iron Python" for a perilous reason: his remarkable physical strength and his silver gauntlets he always wore on his hands.
Amongst the male members was Viper's son, a twenty something man with tan skin, spiky powder blue hair and the same amber eyes as his father's. His name was Fang, also known was "The Sharptooth" for a tooth necklace he would wear on a regular basis. That tooth of his was made out of a sabertooth's actual fang, and it had been his most prized possession since he first received it when he was initiated as a member of Medusa's Gorgon.
"Gentlemen," Viper announced, rising up from his throne. "Our robberies in Oak Town were a success, and I could not be any prouder of you for stealing the finest jewels and luxuries the town has! Not only that, but I would also like to congratulate my son, Fang, for massacring the five female wizards we have targeted over the past three days."
"Thank you, Father," Fang said, a sinister smile forming on his face. "It feels so good to take the lives of women who use Magic… and I can't wait to claim more of them."
"You will, very soon," Viper assumed, his lips forming into a devious smirk. "We have just received word that a guild called Fairy Tail has taken a job request and they are after us. But we will not let them crush us so easily, after having heard of their recent victory at the Grand Magic Games."
He then clenched his right fist and rose it upward as he declared:
"We will move forward and destroy those Fairies, one by one!"
Cheers broke out from his men, albeit Fang did not say a single word. He then moved through the crowd, holding his head up high with devious pride, and thus, looking forward to claim his next female victim….
And so the adventure begins for Laxus, the Thunder Legion and the two Maxwell sisters. What will await them in Oak Town? Find out in the next chapter!
