Five-year old Narcissa was standing next to her mother in their little cottage helping her make bread. Or rather Lydia was making bread while Narcissa ended up slightly covered in flour much to Lydia's amusement. Their laughter however, was interrupted by knock at the door. The two females froze.

"Narcissa, if you hear anything bad get out and run," her mother hissed as she grabbed a dagger and went to answer the door while Narcissa moved towards the back door. She waited with baited breath and then she heard a gasp come from her mother and a voice outside say,

"Did ye miss me Lyddie?" Narcissa knew that voice. Seconds later her father came around the corner and she barreled his arms. He caught her and lifted her up.

"Daddy!" she cried with excitement as she hugged him tight inhaling the salty smell of the sea on his jacket. His beard and hair scratched against her cheek but she didn't care. Her father was home.

"Hello Treasure," he said sitting down in a chair and setting her on his lap.

"She's missed you. It's all I can do to stop her running down to the docks every day," her mother said with a smile.

"I'm not surprised. She has the sea in her blood," answered her father.

"Not to mention trouble from your side," her mother teased.

"Well that goes without saying," smirked her father Narcissa reached up for her father's large feathered hat. He swept it off his head and placed it on hers. As it was too big it slipped down over here eyes. She pushed it up slightly so she could look up into her father's blue eyes and smiling face.

*End of Flashback*

Narcissa found herself staring into those same eyes on an older face. She was leaning on the edge of the crow's nest and he had come to join her.

"How are ye feeling?" he asked gently.

"Nervous, worried, scared." Narcissa had done her best to keep a strong face in front of the other pirates but now in the dark, under a starry sky with nobody but her father to see she letter herself become vulnerable.

"Well, I'd think ye a fool if you weren't at least a little scared," her father replied.

"It's not so much for myself, although I certainly don't want to die, I worry but you and Elizabeth. The people dearest to me are now going to be fighting for their lives. On top of that I'm 23 and about to lead a hoard of pirates against the entire East India Trading Company's armada. I'm leading a fight not just for life but for freedom, and...I'm not sure I'm ready." she glanced at him and saw his blue eyes soften as they always did with her.

"Not long ago I might have thought the same. That while brave ye were too green for a fight like this. But I know different now. You handled those soldiers in Singapore better than many a pirate I've seen and ye held your own at the Court against pirates twice your age and experience. I can't say for sure if we'll win tomorrow. But with you leading us we'll certainly have a fighting chance."

"Thank you, daddy," Narcissa said softly reverting to the diminutive form she rarely used since entering adulthood.

"Of course, treasure," he replied. Narcissa glanced down at her mother's ring.

"Do you think mother would be proud of me?" she asked softly. Her father chuckled.

"I doubt she could have predicted you becoming pirate King but she'd certainly be pleased with how you turned out. I notice ye took her name." his tone was curious rather than accusatory. Narcissa sighed.

"I first took on Davis to fit in and hide. When you died, I took your name as a way to honor you and carry on your legacy. Now you're back and I'm starting to make somewhat of a reputation I want to stand on my own feet. I don't want to be known just for being the daughter of a notorious pirate. I want to be seen as one myself. That said I'll always be a Barbossa at heart," she added leaning against him.

"Aye that you will be lass."

"Besides it could get confusing having two Captain Barbossa's sailing the seas," she added jokingly and her father laughed.

"That be true!"

They remained quiet for a while after that the father and daughter simply enjoying being together for what very well could be the last time. However, Narcissa at last retired to bed in an attempt to gains some sleep.

Hector watched her go. With her sharp wit and underlying fierceness, he was becoming more reminded of her mother than ever. He could still clearly remember the day he met Lydia Davis.

*Flashback*

As was the habit of most pirates when reaching land Hector had made his way to the local tavern. He was sitting at the bar drinking his rum when a commotion nearby caught his attention.

One of the more drunk pirates made to grab a barmaid. She was undoubtably pretty with ash-blond hair and a lithe figure. The shock came with her reaction. Swift as a fox the woman had a dagger against the throat of the man.

"Keep your hands to yourself if you want to live," she hissed pressing the dagger closer so it drew the slightest amount of blood her brown eyes flashing. The man who was wide eyed gave her a tiny nod. She straightened and glanced around at the dead silent tavern.

"The same goes for the rest of you lecherous bastards! If you want a whore you can head down the street." She slipped the dagger back up her sleeve and walked back to the bar which soon became noisy again.

"Quite the show you put on there," commented Hector. The woman glanced at him.

"Most women here fall into two categories lambs or lions. I've learned its far better to be seen as the latter if you want to maintain your dignity."

"Well, I doubt those lads will be trying that again for fear of being bitten," replied Hector with a smirk.

"So much the better. I sell beer not my body. Don't think you'll be an exception," she replied wiping the counter.

"I don't suppose you'd let me at least buy you a drink?" she looked over at him again.

"I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request." Hector considered himself a fairly well read man for a pirate but her words did somewhat confuse him. Clearly this showed on his face because she gave him an amused smirk.

"It means no."

Hector was becoming more intrigued with this woman by the moment.

"That's fair, we haven't been properly introduced. Hector Barbossa." The woman regarded him for a moment before finally saying.

"Lydia Davis."

"That would have a Greek origin, wouldn't it?" said Hector. Lydia raised an eyebrow.

"Quite. The same could be said for you. Hector the great hero of the Trojan war."

"Aye, though I hope to meet a less gruesome end," he replied with a chuckle.

"A wise goal," replied Lydia who's smirk had become a small smile. "You've read Homer." Hector shrugged.

"There are many lonely nights on a ship when things aren't going to hell." Lydia leaned closer curiosity in her eyes.

"You know Hector, I may let you buy me that drink after all."

*End Flashback*

It had only been one drink that night but the following day Hector returned. They would speak for hours into the night once her shift ended, their talks moving from the tavern to strolls along the docks and more country area of Port Raphale.

By the time they finally shared a night together, on his final night there, he had well and truly fallen for her. His departure back to see was a bittersweet one as it meant leaving the woman, he loved but he would return many times bringing back trinkets from his travels. Most notably the opal ring. They weren't married in the technical sense but it represented something similar between the two of them.

Then there came a day a few years later when she gave him news that would change his life.

*flashback*

Hector was lying with Lydia the pair looking up at the stars after a particularly passionate night of lovemaking. She was curled into him with her head on his chest. Her blond hair flowing free.

"Hector,"

"Yes, me dear?" he asked.

"I have something to tell you. But I'm not sure how you'll react." she said looking up at him with worry in her eyes.

"Now you have me worried Lyddie. Surely it can't be that bad."

"I'm pregnant with our child," she said softly. Of all the things she might have said this was the last one he had been expecting.

"Are ye sure?" he asked. She nodded.

"Positive" Hector was speechless.

"I don't expect you to give up piracy and stay with us. But I do want our child to know you. I want you to be a part of her life."

"You want her to know her pirate father?" he asked raising an eyebrow.

"You are much more than just a pirate my love. Would you be willing to do that much at least?" Hector gazed down at her. Truly the idea of fatherhood was actually a rather intimidating one.

"I'm not sure I'd be that wonderful a father." he said.

"We'll just have to see. I certainly have faith in you," said Lydia with a shrug. Hector tilted her chin up and pressed his lips to hers.

"As you wish Lyddie."

*End of Flashback*

Well, he'd certainly done the best he could although a better man would likely have been willing to give up piracy and stay with his family. But then that hadn't been the man Lydia Davis had fallen in love with. Hector figured Narcissa hadn't turned out for the worse for having him as a father. Although some credit likely went to Weatherby Swann's care for her.

Now their daughter was about to engage in the fight of her life and he could very well lose her as he lost Lydia. But then it had partially been Lydia's fierceness that had helped Narcissa get as far as she had. Hopefully it would help her survive tomorrow. Hector wasn't a god fearing man. But he sent a prayer up to Lydia in the hopes that she would help him watch over their daughter.

Author's note: So I was thinking more about what sort of person would manage to make Hector fall in love and this chapter ended up turning into mostly a series of flashbacks. I hope you all liked learning a bit more about Lydia. There was a note about me thinking it makes more sense for Narcissa to have the piece of eight. If Elizabeth really had been Calypso in human form then her body would have disappeared as happened with the actual Calypso leaving the court one pirate short for any future endeavors. So having Narcissa a regular person become the pirate lord made more sense in my eyes. I also always got the feeling that Elizabeth became a pirate out of necessity rather than a true desire to BE one herself. She was damn good at it but it wasn't the life she wanted. Anyway two chapters to go my friends!
