Haley stormed out of the school that afternoon, looking so frustrated and grumpy that Jake almost found it funny.

"You look pleasant," he commented.

Haley glared at him and huffed. "Not in the mood, Jake." She continued walking on, not bothering to wait for Jake to stand up.

"What's the matter?"

"Olivia Mears is the matter."

"Oh, her again?"

"Today she tripped me during ballet class. Three times! I was so angry that I couldn't focus and I…I…" she pursed her lips, trying to form the words.

"You….?" Jake encouraged.

"I got a B on my math test! A B, Jake!"

Jake feigned shock and gasped. "Oh no! Not a B! Anything but that! Can you stand? Do you need me to call a doctor?"

Haley scowled at her brother and kicked him lightly in the leg. "It's not funny, Jake! I don't get Bs! I get As!"

"I get Bs sometimes. And Cs. And Ds. An F here or there," he said nonchalantly.

"What am I going to tell mom and dad?"

"Uh, that you got a B? You gotta chill, Hales. It's not the end of the world."

Haley went silent and stared at her shoes as they walked. She seemed genuinely upset, like she could just burst into tears at any moment.

Jake sighed and grabbed her arm. "Alright, come on. You need ice cream."

"Wha—? Ice cream? But I can't!"

"Uh, yeah you can. Come on."

"But I haven't even had dinner yet! It'll ruin my appetite."

"Soooo, let your appetite be ruined for once. Can't be worse than getting a B right?"

"And I have to meet Sun in 10 minutes for my dragon training! I can't be late unless it's an emergency!"

"Says who? Quit freaking out, Hales. I'll go with you and apologize for making you late."

Haley grumbled something under her breath that Jake didn't even bother trying to decipher. He continued dragging her along, despite her protests. When they arrived at the little ice cream shop, Jake ordered a large caramel and chocolate milkshake for himself, and nudged Haley to place her order.

"Jake, I told you, I—"

"—She'll have the same thing I'm having," Jake interrupted.

The two sat down at a small table near a window as they got their shakes, and Jake began sipping happily on his.

Haley took a small sip, and although she tried to hide it, Jake noticed the slight widening of her eyes. "Good, huh?"

"Very good," she said, taking another sip.

"See, don't you feel better now? Nothing is quite as bad with a milkshake."

Haley said nothing, and only focused on downing her shake as quickly as possible to get to her dragon training on time.

"You know, Haley," Jake said after a minute or so of silence. "Once Brad was giving me a hard time—dude literally wanted to beat me up—and you know what I did?"

"What?"

"Made an evil doppelgänger clone to beat him up for me. You could try that with Olivia." He smirked.

Once again, Haley let the sarcasm of his tone fly right over her head and she gasped. "What?! You can't be serious!"

"Maybe I am. Or not. Who knows?"

"Hmph."

"In all seriousness, though," he said. "Just don't let her get to you. She isn't worth it." He flashed her a smile. "If you ask me, you're way cooler than her anyway. But don't tell anyone I said that."

Haley glanced up at him, reading his face to tell if he was joking or not. She smiled. "Thanks."

The two finished their treats, and headed off to go meet Sun, who seemed worried when they arrived.

"Haley! You're ten minutes late, is everything okay?"

"Well, I—"

"—It's my fault, Sun. Sorry," Jake chimed in. "I made her stop and get some ice cream with me on the way here."

Sun's expression softened. "Well, as long as everything's okay. Shall we begin?" She smiled and took Haley's hand, leading her off to the training area. Haley looked back, giving her brother a small smile and a wave. "Thanks for the ice cream."

Jake nodded and waved back before heading off to his own dragon training, where Lao Shi wasn't quite as understanding about his tardiness as Sun had been.
