The darkness of clouds pull away to make room for a beautiful and enormous full moon. A beautiful moonlit night on the mountain. Cold wind swept across the mountain and the trees danced their midnight ballet. The pale white glow of the moon shone brightly and that light reflected off the snow covered ground. The shadows could vividly be seen mimicking the dances of the trees. Not a creature stirred in the dense forest of that mountain, or was there?

The moon's light shone on a house built in a clearing in the dense forest. It was a modest little place. It wasn't fancy nor was it old and rotting. It was a well built and sturdy enough shelter for the family that lived inside it. The song of the cold wind lulled them to sleep, however, three members of this particular family were still awake. Completely UN-charmed by the wind's soft lullaby.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Said the mother, "It's not too late to change your mind, Tori."

"Our family was almost devoured by a demon! Twice!" Replied Tori, "I want our family to be safe. To

grow and prosper. That means I'll be doing whatever I can to make sure that no demons come this way.

I want the little ones to have a chance at life."

The mother looked at her eldest daughter with concern and turned to her husband. The husband was plagued with an incurable illness and looked as if he hadn't much longer to live. Yet, he didn't have any kind of emotional outbursts. He smiled at his eldest daughter, but he expressed his concern to her.

"You don't have to do this you know." The father responded, "You can just keep living an ordinary life

right here with us. You don't have to go around chasing demons, Tori."

"I do want to live an ordinary life here with you, but that's just not possible with the demons around.

I'm not taking anymore chances now. I don't want the little ones to feel the same pain I went through,

when that first demon attacked." Tori continued, "I don't want to see them hurt. Much worse killed

before they even had a chance at life. I want the little ones to at least have a future."

The parents listened to Tori's words and they found that she wasn't going to change her mind. They both agreed to support her in her decision. They watched her pack a few necessities in a small backpack. She also packed hair ties so she could put her hair up during her missions. When she was ready, she put on her backpack and turned to her parents.

"Looks like you're not changing your mind. You have a noble wish, Tori." Her father praised, "I'm

proud of you for it. I know you'll do great out there and I believe you will discover your unique breath

style. Just know that you can come home anytime you want. This house will always be your home. We

love you Tori and that will never change. You will always be a member of the 'Kamado' family."

"Thank you, father. I know that I may not be here when you pass away, but I'll be thinking of you

always. That goes for you too, mother."

Tori hugged her parents and then she turned to her sleeping siblings. She started from youngest to oldest. She looked to see that Rokuta was sleeping with Tanjiro that night. She decided to wait and do the two of them last. She went to Shigeru first. She said her goodbyes and moved on to Hanako. Once more she said goodbye and moved on to the next sibling. This continued until she got to Nezuko. She had more to say to Nezuko than the other three.

"Nezuko, my beloved little sister, I want you to help mother as much as you can with the younger ones.

I won't be here to do that for her so you must take my place and help out with the chores. I'll miss you

so much. I wish I didn't have to leave this burden on you, but I'm going off to help keep the family

safe. So please help mother in my place. You're old enough that you can handle the work I did here. I

love you, Nezuko. That will never change. Be strong for the rest of the family." Tori whispered, "I'll

see you again someday."

She then made her way to Tanjiro's bed. She looked at Tanjiro and tears streamed down her face. She remembered when he was born. Tanjiro bonded with Tori right away. She was there for him in every moment of his life. Now she was leaving and she didn't know when she would see her family again. She first addressed Rokuta. She put his stuffed toy in his arms and gave him a kiss on his forehead. She whispered her farewell to Rokuta. Now came the hard part. Saying goodbye to Tanjiro. Tears continued to stream down her face. She questioned, Why is saying goodbye so hard?! But then her worst fears were realized, Tanjiro woke up.

"Nee-chan, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" Tanjiro asked innocently, "Why are you sad, Nee-

chan?

"Tanjiro, my dear little brother, I wish you had stayed asleep. It would've made this a little easier." Tori

sobbed, "Tanjiro, I'm leaving."

"But why are you leaving?! Where are you going?!" Tanjiro questioned, "Will you come back?!"

"I wish I could explain this all to you, Tanjiro. But the time I have left with you is short. I have to leave.

I don't know when I'll be able to come back, if I come back at all." Tori explained, "As for where I'm

going, I really don't know. Listen, Tanjiro, I want you to be strong for me. Don't ever let the younger

ones catch you with a sad face. Don't ever lose that kind smile that I love so much. I may be leaving

you, but I'll be looking out for our family always. I love you with everything I have, little brother.

Never ever forget that. No matter how things may same to change, never forget that you'll always be

my little brother. Never forget who you are. Don't follow after me, Tanjiro. I'd rather you not fight the

battle I'm fighting. But if something happens and you follow in my footsteps, I won't stop you. Stay

with our family, Tanjiro. They need you more than you need me. I have to go now. Goodbye, Tanjiro. I

love you."

She stood up and walked over to her parents. Nezuko woke up wondering what was going on. She looked over and saw Tori hugging their parents and she heard Tori say 'goodbye' to them. Then Tori headed for the doorway. A raven landed on the front porch. Tori nodded to the raven in understanding and she continued forward. Tanjiro got out of bed and followed, but only to see her off. He accepted the fact that she was leaving and hoped to one day understand why. Nezuko, on the other hand, wanted to know what was going on. She ran up to the edge of the porch.

"Nee-san!" Nezuko called out, "Where are you going?!"

Tori stopped walking and just paused there. Her head was down and she clenched her fists. There was a long silence between them. Tori was starting to have second thoughts, but she dismissed them. She reminded herself of why she was doing this. She turned to her siblings and she looked at them with tears streaming down her face.

"Tanjiro, Nezuko." She started, "I hope that one day you can forgive me for leaving you without an

explanation. I'm sorry."

She gritted her teeth, clenched her fits, inhaled sharply, and she turned around and she ran. Her feet crunched loudly on the snow covered ground. Nezuko with tears streaming down her face. Watched her sister runaway from them and she didn't understand why. She tried to run after her, but Tanjiro held her back.

"Nee-san! Nee-san! Come back, Nee-san! Don't leave us, Nee-san!" Nezuko screamed, "Nee-san!"

Tori heard Nezuko screaming out for her. She couldn't bare to her Nezuko scream, but she didn't turn back. She continued to follow the raven to town. She ran all the way down the mountain, but she stopped a long the way to take a break once in awhile. She reached town the by sunrise. There, two figures waited for her. She ran up to them out of breath. She took a moment to catch her breath and she looked up at them.

"Rengoku-san, Iguro-san. I'm ready to become a demon slayer." Tori announced, "I'm willing to go

wherever the master sends me."

"Good because you'll be coming back to headquarters with us!" Rengoku replied, "So try and keep up,

my dear. Although, I'm willing to carry you if you need it."

"Have you been crying, Kamado-kun? Your eyes are puffy." Iguro asked, "Also, you have tear stains on

your eyes."

"My apologies. Saying goodbye to my family wasn't an easy thing to do." She explained, "Especially

my siblings. Tanjiro was awake when I said goodbye to him. Nezuko woke up later, but she was

screaming and crying as I was leaving. I'm glad none of my other siblings were awake. I think Tanjiro

understands why I left, but Nezuko probably doesn't understand. Still it wasn't easy."

"I'm sure it wasn't. It must be really heartbreaking for you." The flame pillar sympathized, "I hope

you'll be okay with being away from them."

"It will be an adjustment, but I'm doing this for my family. To protect my siblings and give them a

future. I'll gather what solace I can from that." Tori responded, "Besides, I'll be protecting more than

just them, but hundreds of people from demons. So there's another thing I can look forward to."

"That's the spirit! You'll make a great demon slayer, Tori-kun." Iguro exclaimed, "Now let's get

going."

And just like that, Tori Kamado began her journey to become a demon slayer. What challenges wait her, only time will tell. She has albeit one goal in mind: Protect her family. Tori was determined to make sure that she succeeds in becoming a demon slayer so her family could have a chance to thrive.

Author's note:

So this is my first Kimetsu no Yaiba story. I mostly do pokemon stories. Please go easy on me as this is my first time writing double-spaced dialogue. My other stories don't have this. I'm just trying this out to see if I like it. If I get positive feedback about the double-spaced dialogue, I'll continue to use it. Note that this story is just starting out so please don't complain about it being bad until more chapters come out.

Fun facts:

"Tori" translates to "Bird" in Japanese. I used this to signify her breathing style. Her breathing style will be revealed in an upcoming chapter.

Tori has a bunch of scars on the right side of her body from when she was attacked by a demon. The full story of the attack will be explained in upcoming chapters.

Tori is almost exactly like Tanjiro. The only difference between the two is that she inherited her mother's eyes instead of her father's and she's taller than he is.

Final Thoughts:

I love the demon slayer franchise and I hope to see more. I hope you enjoyed this first chapter of my story. Any suggestion of improvement is welcome. Destructive criticism is not welcome. If you don't like it then don't read it. Please cut me some slack though. This is the first time I've written something meant to target a higher audience then I'm used to writing about.
