As he was about to enter Shank's office, he heard Shanks' voice from outside saying, "C'mon Mihawk, it's been so long, let's have a drink and talk!" He entered the classroom. In it was Shanks, with an empty bottle of sake, and a man dressed in black with orange Hawk-like eyes, a thin moustache and goatee. A had a hat that looked a bit like the guy on the white horse, except it was black. He was like a darker version of the horse guy.
"Oh, hey Luffy!" Shanks smiled. "This is Mihawk." he told him, indicating the man "He teaches swordsmanship and Spanish class." Luffy looked at the sword on his back. 'His name sounds too difficult…I'll just call him The Sword guy.' He thought.
"Ok. Hi, Sword guy!" He grinned. Mihawk frowned but didn't complain.
"I heard about your new Haki lessons." Shanks smirked at Luffy "Soon you'll be almost as half as strong as me,"
"Yeah, right!" Luffy shot back. "I'll be even stronger!"
"You'll have to train for 10 more years to reach me!" Shanks laughed.
"I don't care! I'm gonna be even stronger than you!" Luffy yelled. "And be the King of the Pirates!" Mihawk raised his eyebrows.
"He seemed just like he was" He noted. Shanks nodded.
"Who's he?" Luffy asked.
"Well, I'll show you to your common room and dorm" Shanks said, changing the subject. He led Luffy to a room with a drawing of a lion that looked like it was done by a 5-year-old.
"You like my art?" Shanks asked.
"That's yours?" Luffy asked incredulous. "I thought some kid drew it."
"Shut up!" Shanks complained. "Like your drawing skills are any better!" Luffy had to admit, Shanks had a point. Shanks opened the door and Luffy entered it to see another fight between Zoro and Sanji. Shanks walked away, ignoring their fight, and closed the door.
"Zoro! Sanji! You two are still fighting?" Luffy asked. The two noticed him and stopped their struggle.
"Sorry, Luffy. This dartboard brow was being his usual stupid self."
"Says the one who spilled his sake on my cooking ingredients"
"They were in the way! What the hell do you need cooking ingredients anyway! We get served food!"
"I don't wanna eat some crappy food some random guy made! Who know how much hairs in it? And I'm not wasting food, so I cook my own! I even requested the cooking teacher that I borrow his oven when I make food!"
"Lucky Roo said he only put his sweat, blood and tears into it," Luffy remembered. Zoro looked disgusted, but Sanji just facepalmed.
"Luffy, that's a figure of speech that some cooks make when they put hard work into cooking food."
"Oh…" Luffy said. "what's a figure of speech?" Sanji stopped in though, not knowing how to explain.
"It's something that you say but you don't mean it literally," said a voice that sounded like his big brother. Luffy turned and saw Ace. Standing next to him was a tall boy with brown hair and white clothes.
"Hey, Ace!"
"Hello, Luffy. I see you've made some new friends too. This is Thatch. I've told him all about you." Thatch waved at Luffy and smiled. Luffy smiled back.
"These are my friends, Ace!" He indicated Zoro and Sanji. "Their names are Zoro and Sanji!"
"Oh? It's not Mosshead and Curly brow? That's all I heard them call each other!" Luffy laughed.
"They're both stupid so they always fight and call each other that." Luffy then received a punch from Zoro and Sanji.
"Like you can talk!" Zoro yelled.
"Only you and Mosshead are the stupid ones!" Sanji glared.
"What was that Curly brow?"
"You got a hearing problem, Mosshead?" The two were at it again. Luffy laughed as they fought, and a cloud of dust formed around them.
"Oh, yeah Ace. I have 3 other friends! I don't know where they are though…Sanji, do you know where Nami and Rebecca are?" He asked loudly. Sanji didn't hear him over his fighting and yelling. "Ah c'mon. He's always interested in them, so I figured he knew." He told Ace.
"Excuse me?" a girl's voice asked. Luffy, Ace and Thatch turned to see who it was. Sanji immediately stopped fighting, somehow hearing the girl's voice. The girl had blue hair, gold earrings and wore a white dress.
"You're Luffy right?" Luffy nodded. Sanji groaned and handed over a note to a smirking Zoro. The girl smiled at Luffy.
I'm Vivi. I'm Rebecca's best friend. We met before we went to this school. I just came over to thank you for what you did earlier today."
"Don't mention it! Those jerks asked for it! Do you know where Rebecca is?" Sanji got up.
"Oh! Nami-san and Rebecca-chan went to the girls dormitory to do some work."
"I asked you before and you didn't say anything." Luffy accused.
"You should have asked louder."
"I did!"
"Well, sorry. I only hear the voices of a beautiful lady." He looked at Vivi, and his eyes turned into love hearts said.
"Ok… I'll go say hello to Nami and Rebecca." Luffy got up and walked towards the girls dorm.
"Wait!" Vivi said. He kept on going.
"That idiot…" Zoro and Sanji muttered at the same time. Luffy threw the door open.
"Hey! Nami! Rebecca!" He looked around a saw a wooden sword smack him in the face throwing him back out of the door. It didn't hurt, but it shocked him. He looked up and saw the black-haired girl that had stopped Zoro and Sanji's first fight.
"GET OUT OF THE GIRL'S DORM! YOU PERVERT!" She slammed the door, hard.
"What the hell was that?" Luffy asked.
"You can't just barge into the girl's dorm!" Vivi admonished.
"That's disrespectful to the ladies!" Sanji added.
"It's called the girl's dorm for a reason, idiot!" Zoro told him.
"You're meant to sneak in," Ace advised.
"Yeah!" Sanji agreed.
"Wait what?!" Vivi was shocked.
"Uh…just kidding!" Sanji chuckled.
"Liar." Zoro muttered.
"What does pervert mean?" Luffy asked.
"Go ask the one standing right here," Zoro said, indicating Sanji. The two began fighting again.
"Do they do this all the time?" Vivi asked. Luffy nodded.
"They're idiots," he said more quietly, so they couldn't hear him this time.
"I'm going to go back to the girl's dorm, now" Vivi walked over to the girls dorm. "Bye, Luffy!" Luffy waved. She entered in.
"YOU'RE BACK HUH?! Oh- sorry Vivi, I thought it was that weirdo again." Luffy went back to talking with Ace while watching Zoro and Sanji fight. Eventually, they all got tired and went to the boy's dorm to get some sleep. There were bunk beds. Luffy chose a bottom one and drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Luffy got up. There were more people in his dorm now. Luffy recognised Chopper. He also saw A boy with a long nose he hadn't seen before.
"Hey!" He shouted at the boy. The boy jumped up in shock.
"Huh?! Stay back! I have 8 thousand men under my command!" Luffy laughed.
"Shihshishi! You're funny! What's your name?" The boy raised his head into the air, sticking up his long nose.
"My name's Usopp! I'm a brave warrior of the sea… well, um- that's what I'm trying to be." He said the last part quietly. Luffy grinned.
"That sounds cool! I'm gonna be King of the Pirates! Wanna be friends?!"
"You gonna do this crap to everyone you meet!" Sanji cut in, having just woken up.
"Nope! Just the people I like!" Luffy replied. Sanji smiled, a tiny bit, but quickly covered it up.
"Well, I'm gonna go make my breakfast. I'll see you later." At the mention of food, Luffy perked up.
"Ooh, can I have some?"
"No way! How am I supposed to eat if you eat it all?!" Luffy pouted at him. Chopper began to stir as well.
"Hey, Chopper! I didn't introduce you to my other friends, did I?" Luffy began. Chopper, who had just woken up had a shock to see Luffy right in his face.
"AAH!"
"Guys, this is Chopper," Luffy announced. "Chopper, this is Sanji, Zoro and Usopp," He indicated them, but then realised one of them was missing.
"Wait…where's Zoro?"
"Still sleeping," Sanji frowned. "Hope he stays like that."
"He'll miss breakfast, though!"
"Who cares?"
"We should wake him up either way," Luffy said firmly. Sanji sighed.
"ZORO!" He yelled in Zoro's ear. No response. "ZORO!" Sanji kicked Zoro's butt out of the bed.
"Get up, you lazy piece of crap!" He growled. Zoro stayed asleep. "Didn't work either."
"I got an idea!" Usopp jumped up. He got out a slingshot and pointed it at Zoro's open mouth. "Tabasco star!" He shot a red projectile at Zoro's mouth. Flames burst from his mouth, but he remained asleep. "What?! That's my spiciest one!"
"It's no use," Chopper told them. "His brain is in a state of unconsciousness."
"Meaning he's dead?!" Luffy asked in panic. Sanji's face lit up.
"No." Sanji's face fell. "He's basically in a coma, but a short one. He'll take a while to wake up, but we can't force him awake."
"Well, guess we leave him." Sanji walked out the room.
"Let's go get our breakfast then." Luffy, Usopp and Chopper left the room, not noticing a pink haired boy glaring at the back of them.
As the three were on their way to the cafeteria, they met Shanks.
"Hey, Shanks!" Luffy called.
"Hey, Luffy. I was just talking to Garp about you!"
"To Grandpa?" Luffy hoped Shanks hadn't said anything bad about him. Or…
"I was telling him about your lunch money situation. He came up with a solution. He pays us directly for your lunch. So, you don't have to go around begging us for free food. Or…" He smirked. "Getting your friends to buy it for you."
"I didn't ask Rebecca to!" Luffy complained. "It was nice of her, though. Wonder where she and Nami are?"
"They got up hours before you lazy guys. They were studying in the library." Studying sounded boring. Luffy didn't know why Nami and Rebecca did it so much.
"So, what about your other friends? The two that are always fighting."
"Sanji went to make his own breakfast, because he doesn't want to eat hairs, and Zoro's asleep still. Chopper said he goes into a coma when he sleeps. I don't know what that means, but we can't wake him up." Shanks laughed.
"Ha-ha! Quite the sleeper, huh?" Luffy nodded. "Well hopefully he wakes up before his first lesson. Or Queen's gonna be real mad."
"Queen's stupid, though," Luffy pointed out.
"True," Shanks said quietly. "But he's still gonna be mad. Especially if he finds out on how I "punish" the students he sends to me." Shanks laughed at his own words and walked off.
"So, you're friends with him?" Usopp asked incredulously as they ate their breakfast. "How did you too meet?"
"Yeah. Me and Shanks met when I was just a kid. I wanted to join his pirate crew, but he told me I couldn't because I was too young, and I couldn't swim. Then I made things worse for myself by eating the Gum-Gum fruit, which stops me from being able to swim forever." He pulled at his cheeks, stretching them, to elaborate his point on his fruit. "Then some stupid bandit came in asking for sake. Shanks and his crew had already drunk it all, so he got mad and hit Shanks spilling all his sake everywhere!"
"Did Shanks beat them up?" Usopp asked excitedly. Chopper was interested, too. Too interested to notice Luffy stealing some of their food.
"No. He just asked the bar lady for a mop to clean up the mess."
"What?!" Chopper and Usopp were shocked. Shocked enough for Luffy to snag more food.
"That's what I thought. But Shanks and his crew just laughed it all off." Usopp and Chopper looked confused.
"But then," Luffy continued. "The bandit came back. I confronted him, telling him to apologise to Shanks." Usopp and Chopper looked at him with awe. Luffy rubbed the back of his head. "I don't know what I was thinking back then, I guess I was pretty stupid as a kid."
"Well, you haven't changed much!" Came Sanji's voice. He had finished making his breakfast and seemed to have been listening.
"Sanji! When did you get here?" Luffy asked.
"I heard the words "lady"," he said as if that explained everything. 'Which' Luffy thought 'it kind of did'
"Anyway, the bar lady, Makino, tried to stop me, but like I said, I was pretty stupid back then. I tried to fight the bandits, but they were too much for me. They couldn't beat me up, because I'm rubber, and physical attacks won't work. So, they tried cutting me instead."
"W-what did you do?" Chopper asked, terrified.
"Nothing. Shanks and his crew came and saved me. One of the bandits tried to threaten Shanks with a gun, then Lucky Roo shot him!"
"Wow," Sanji muttered. "Didn't think that fat guy was really a fighter."
"Then Benn used the butt of his gun and sent all the other ones flying!"
"Wow! Strong!" Usopp and Chopper's eyes were stars.
"The bandit leader used a smoke bomb to sneak away with me, though" Usopp and Chopper's shocked faces were back. "He tried to throw me into the sea, but a Sea King showed up and ate him!"
"Cool!" Usopp exclaimed. "A Sea King?!"
"Yeah. But after that he went for me." Chopper gasped. Usopp looked worried and even Sanji looked intrigued about what would happen next.
"But then…" Luffy still felt sad about what had happened that day, what Shanks had sacrificed for him. He felt tears in his eyes and fought them off. "Shanks saved me… at the cost of his arm!" All three of them were in shock.
"What?" Usopp gasped.
"So that's why he only has one arm?" Chopper squealed.
"I thought he lost it in a fight or something." Sanji remarked. Luffy smiled.
"Later on, Shanks was ready to leave the village. This time I didn't ask him to take him with me. Instead, I told him I would make a crew even stronger than his and be King of the Pirates!" Usopp, Chopper, and even Sanji smiled. "Shanks gave me this hat" He indicated the straw hat on his head. "And told me to return it to him when he became a strong pirate"
"So, you have a foolish dream just like mine," Sanji muttered.
"What's yours?" Luffy asked, interested. Sanji didn't answer.
"Wait!" Usopp interrupted. "If you knew Shanks' crew. Then did you know my… my father?"
"Yasopp?" Luffy asked. Usopp's face lit up.
"You do!"
"I could tell you were his son! He would always tell me stories about you when I was a kid. The same stories all the time. I still remember them!" He told Usopp all about his father's tales about him. Usopp's face was alit with joy.
"I wonder how he's doing," Luffy said.
"Yeah, me too!" Usopp agreed. "I haven't seen him in years! What about your fathers?" He asked the other three.
"I don't think I have one" Luffy replied.
"I did, but my family rejected me, because of my blue nose." Chopper said sadly. Luffy and the other two felt horrible for him.
"I'd prefer not to talk about mine," Sanji stared down. "What about mothers?" He said, trying to change the conversation slightly.
"Mine died of sickness," Usopp responded.
"Same here." Sanji regretting changing the conversation to this.
"I don't know about my mother either," Luffy added. Chopper remained silent.
"Both my parents died when I was young." Said a boy with pink hair and round glasses.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!" All 4 of them yelled at the uninvited guest.
"I'm Coby! You guys have some nerve. We share the same dorm, and you didn't even talk to me!"
"We share the same dorm?" Luffy asked confused. "Did any of you guys notice him?" They all shook their heads, except Chopper.
"I saw him sleeping there, but I didn't want to disturb him."
"It was a test," Coby smirked. "To see if you cared,"
"Well, we don't," Sanji answered. "So go find someone else to annoy." At that point the bell rung for lesson one of the days.
"Let's go!" Luffy shot up. "What lesson do you guys have? I got Science with Caesar!" He announced, reading his timetable.
"Same!" Chopper answered.
"Me too!" Usopp grinned. The three of them walked to their lesson with their arms over each other's shoulders (Chopper in the air).
