(Sequel to Road Trip)
After a brush with death early on in the day, Jaune counted his blessings as he took a bite of his smore. While he undoubtedly couldn't escape allowing Ruby to drive forever, he was now awarded the chance to help her work on the basics at one point in the future. After all, they were in this relationship thing for the long haul.
His face reddened as he thought of the prospect of marriage coming into play one day, and heck, maybe even little Rubys and Jaunes at one point or another. He'd always dreamed of having the kind of relationship his parents had. Happy, goofy, and by all means fertile based on him and his overabundance of sisters.
He stole a glance from the corner of his eye at the girl, watching as she licked the gooey leftovers of her own smore from her hands. The idea of them procreating a family would have to wait until they were sure that's what they wanted. Of course, he was open to the idea, but he had never asked her. Perhaps she would be against it? Again, questions for a time down the road, after all they were still kids themselves.
Jaune moved to the pack of crackers as the thought left his mind. He dug through the wrapper, retrieving the next two delicious victims to house his chocolate and marshmallow. It wasn't often he was awarded the opportunity to take full advantage of the snacks with no interference barring Ruby herself. Yang and Blake had just left for the cabin a few moments earlier, as well as the rest of Jaune's team and Weiss prior to that. Now, the new couple was left all alone for the first time since they arrived.
"Hey Jaune, can I ask you something?" Ruby questioned, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, go ahead Rubes." He replied, still fixing his sandwich.
"Well," She coughed. "What do you think of being a dad one day?"
"I think it's a– WHAT?!" He nearly exclaimed.
The echo of the boy's voice carried into the woods, reverberating over the next few seconds as he nearly fell over the log he was occupying. The shock on his face remained even moments later as the silence continued. Ruby remained focused on the fire, but based on her fidgeting, Jaune could see she was uneasy about what she had asked.
He tried his best to regain some composure as he fixed his slackjaw and sat back up to a proper position. To say that was unexpected would be the understatement of the century. He had to give it to her, it was a direct question, and she deserved a direct answer. He just hoped it was the one she was looking for.
"That's–"
"I'm sorry!" She blurted out.
"W-What?"
"I'm sorry! Don't worry about it!" She replied speedily. "It was dumb to just… Ugh, I'm so embarrassed!"
The girl groaned audibly, discomfit evident throughout. She tried her best to avoid his gaze, even hiding her face in her hands for a moment.
"Hey, don't be sorry!" He answered, trying to ease her abashment. "It's… well we…" he trailed.
"I want kids!"
Jaune blinked at the girl's statement. Even as she tried to hide her face, he could see her eyes peeking out at him between the cracks of her fingers. He didn't have to see her whole face to know how much that comment took out of her. After all, if it was razzling him as much as it was, it had to be worse for her.
Still, he once again had to admire her just blatantly advertising her emotions. Perhaps if more people wore their feelings on their sleeve like she did, the world might be a better place.
The blonde's mouth curved into a warm smile as his thoughts continued. Here she was, taking the lead again just like when they were in school or in the field. Granted, it was rather abrupt, almost like a sneak attack, but how was she supposed to bring this up? It's not like it was a usual topic of conversation.
It was also worth mentioning, the timing of her thoughts along with his own was slightly… hair-raising, to say the least.
Jaune stood up from his seat, dropping his would-be-sandwich to the ground. He strolled over to the short redhead, who still tried her best to hide her face as he approached. He took his time, sitting down beside her, watching the fire for a moment, listening to the crackle of the wood.
"I… want kids too." He said plainly.
"Y-You do?" She asked, slowly removing her hands. "You really do?"
He turned to face her, focusing on the moment. He took notice of her rosy cheeks and her eyes that were glistering brightly in the moonlight above. In return, she stared back at his face, noting his serious look.
"Yeah. I haven't given it a ton of thought, but… if it's with y-you, I think I would like to."
Ruby squirmed slightly as he mentioned it being her specifically. Her heart raced in her chest slightly, as she tried to slow her breathing so as to not lose her composure. She wasn't sure why she had finally asked him this question now, out of nowhere, but Weiss's interrogation on whether they had the same serious intentions was most likely to blame.
"You," She began. "You think I would be a good mom?"
"Absolutely." He answered without a second thought. "I think you'd be an amazing mom."
Ruby's poor heart only continued pounding as she began to shake with nervousness in her appendages. She also wasn't used to having such serious talks when it came to life, but she couldn't help but enjoy what he was saying. Sure, every girl had thoughts of one day carrying a child, but up until recently, again thanks to Weiss, she was having it more and more often.
Maybe now that they had graduated and had been dating for a while… was it too early to… try?
"I think you'd be a really good dad too, Jaune." She replied finally with a smile. The boy blinked once or twice before returning it himself, noticeably flustered.
"You think so?"
"Yep! Though you are kind of a dork."
"Hey!" He replied in feigned distress. "You're the dork!"
"Nope. It's definitely you." She chuckled into her hand.
"Whatever!" He stated in exasperation. "Got you, didn't I?"
She leaned over precipitously, catching him off guard before capturing his lips. His eyes widened in response before meeting it. It was slow, but deep. Passionate, but somewhat… lustful? They remained that way for a few moments, the smacking of their oral cavities the only noise filling the air.
Ruby ended the kiss shortly after, licking her lips as she pulled away, as if enjoying the last tastes of leftover smore from Jaune's mouth. She stood up thereafter, watching as Jaune remained there, his lips still formed into an "o" shape, as if not ready for it to end. She stepped behind the log they shared, stretching out as his eyes remained locked on her.
"Why don't you clean up and meet me back at our room?" She asked in a suggestive tone, something he picked up immediately before nodding his head in silence.
She grinned to herself as she walked off toward the cabin, leaving Jaune to his own machinations. Within moments, she had escaped his vision. Once he was alone, his eyes shifted back to the moon above, as he arched his back. Today had been quite the day to say the least. From near-death experiences to talks of children.
"She definitely knows how to get my heart racing…"
