"Well, you have a quirk," the doctor said, looking at me.

"What is it?" I asked.

"That's the strange part," he said.

"What do you mean?" my mom asked.

"We've done every test and you have a quirk, it's just that we can't figure it out yet," the doctor said.

"What do you mean?" my mom asked.

"His quirk seems to be locked and we can't tell what it is until he unlocks it. As of right now, he's basically quirkless. On the registry it will show he has a quirk, it'll just be labeled unknown," the doctor explained.

My vision shrank and I dropped my All Might figure. I don't remember most of the car ride home but I went to the computer before bed and started watching All Might like always.

"Izuku," my mom said, walking in.

"C-can I-I b-be a h-hero?" I cried.

"I'm so sorry," she said, giving me a hug.

For the next six years I would try to make my quirk appear as much as possible, even doing a couple of dangerous(for a kid) things. One day my mom caught me holding my breath underwater for too long and told me to stop. That night I went to bed early. I woke up the next day and while getting ready for school(read torture) my mom stopped me.

"Izuku dear, why don't we try something different? Why don't you try picking up a hobby like playing music and then you might unlock your quirk," she said.

"Alright," I said.

"Tomorrow I can drop you off somewhere where a woman is teaching any instrument you would want to learn," she said.

So you decided for me, I thought. "Alright, I think I'll start with piano," I said.

"All right, I'll be sure to let her know."

I then went to school and dealt with Kacchan and his friends telling me that I can't do anything and that I was a Deku. I then went home and started to write about what heroes I saw and their quirks. The next day I got dressed and my mom drove me to the house of my new music teacher.

"Hello, you must be Izuku," a woman with glasses, purple hair, and jacks on her earlobes said. "I'm Mika Jirou, I'll be teaching you any instrument you want to learn."

"Th-thank you, um, can I-I l-learn p-piano?" I asked.

"Of course, let's go to the studio," Mrs. Jirou said, guiding me to a room with a bunch of instruments and equipment. She walked over to a piano on the side and sat on the bench with enough room for me to also sit. "So, we'll start simple and I'll teach you which key is which note," she said.(warning, I've never played piano, I play tuba and electric bass)

She showed me that there were seven notes that were called naturals and were labeled A-G and that they were the white keys. She then said that the black keys were partials or flats and sharps and that they were in between the notes. She then went into explaining about chords and how there are many notes that sound good together. She then played a group of notes going up and then down and said that it was called the B flat scale and that there were many more. I then put my hands where hers were and played the notes as I remembered.

"Wow, I've never seen someone pick up a scale just from seeing and hearing it," she said. "You must have a knack for music."

"Th-thanks, I've always l-loved listening to m-music," I said.

"You're one of my best students I've ever had that doesn't have a music quirk," she said. "So, why don't I see if you can pick up an easy song?" she asked. Her fingers hit only three notes but I could tell that it was a melody. "Try playing that."

I put my fingers closer to where I was and started hitting the keys and while the order matched the lengths didn't. I then tried it again and matched the lengths. I kept doing this song until Mrs. Jirou started playing as well and then she changed to chords. I kept playing and then I heard the song get quieter. I looked down at my hands to see that I was playing the song by myself perfectly.

"W-what?" I asked, stopping.

"Music must run in your blood. I've never seen a person start playing at such a level. I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the year you'd be at my daughter's level and ready to learn a new instrument," she said.

"Y-you're just s-saying that," I said, scratching the back of my neck.

"No, you're an amazing musician, trust me."

"Thanks," I said.

"Well, it's been an hour so why don't we take a quick break. Would you like something to drink?"

"Some water would be fine," I said.

When she came back we continued the lesson. For the next year every Saturday I would go to my music lessons and then one day things changed.

"Alright, so do you want to start learning a new instrument?" Mrs. Jirou asked.

"Do you think I can?" I asked.

"You got the basics of music down so I don't see why not, you don't have to."

"Alright, um, can you teach me the violin?"

"Oh, why that instrument out of curiosity?" she asked, seemingly looking for a violin.

"I've always loved classical music and sea shanties and the violin is in both," I said.

"Alright, well it would seem my daughter took the violin to her room so I'll see if she'll bring it down," she said, walking to the door and opening it. "Kyoka, please bring the violin to the studio," she called out.

"Why do you need the violin?" a girl around my age with short purple hair and jacks like her mother asked, walking in with a case.

"Kyoka, meet Izuku Midoriya, he's been taking lessons from me for a year and decided to learn violin," Mrs. Jirou said.

"Um, h-hi," I stuttered.

"Wow, a year of lessons and moving to violin, must be either talented or your parents complain about you playing the same song over and over on one instrument. However looking at you I'd guess the former," she said. "Here's the violin," she added, walking out.

"Sorry about that, she's annoyed that I teach music to other people. Now, let's get started," she said, taking the violin out.

She taught me the basics(I have no clue about the violin) and by the end of the day I could play a B flat scale. After a month I could do most of the major scales, and it took me a year to be able to play a song. Jirou and I never interacted until one day when Kacchan and his friends decided to attack me in the park.

"Deku, when will you learn you can't do anything?" Kacchan asked.

"I-I can do stuff, I-I'm l-learning m-music," I said.

"Ha, like anyone would teach a quirkless loser like you."

"I-I have a q-quirk, I-I just can't u-use it y-yet," I said.

"I said you don't so you don't, or are you calling me a liar?" he sneered.

"N-no, y-your f-facts just a-aren't f-fully r-right."

"Hey, there you are Midoriya," a voice called out.

"J-Jirou?"

"The fuck are you?" Kacchan asked.

"His friend, we were going to meet up to talk about possibly playing a song together," she lied.

"Well, I'm teaching him something so get out of my way."

"Looks like you're beating him up, since he won't stop you I will," she said.

"Oh yeah, with what pathetic quirk?"

"This one," she said, stabbing him with her jacks causing him to fall to the ground yelling in pain. "Let's go," she said, grabbing my hand and running off. She pulled me through the park and down some streets to a dinky cafe called Le Blanc. She nodded to the owner who just looked at her and got started on what I was guessing was a coffee for her.

"Want anything kid?" the old man asked.

"Um, just a cup of black coffee please," I said.

"Alright."

"So," Jirou asked, pulling me into a booth. "Why were you letting those guys beat you up?"

"Th-they were j-just p-playing," I said.

"Wrong, I can hear when a person lies because their heart increases. Why?"

"Because, if I stand up then it just gets worse," I said.

"Are you really quirkless?" she asked, her tone switching from serious to curious.

"No, I have a quirk, it just hasn't been activated yet," I said.

"Hmm, never heard about stuff like that," Jirou said, leaning back.

"Here you go," the man said, setting two coffees down in front of each of us. I quickly gave him some yen for both of us.

"Hey, I pay for my own," Jirou said.

"Think of it as a thanks for helping me out," I said.

"Alright, but I did want to ask, do you want to hang out Saturday after your lesson?" she asked.

"Sure," I said. It will give me some time between lessons and the park so it's for the best.

Next week we sat down and I asked her about what she could play to which she answered with every instrument there is. We then started to hang out after my lessons for what started as a few minutes but eventually became an hour or two.

"Hey Jirou?" I asked as we were watching a movie called the Princess Bride but I wasn't paying too much attention.

"Yeah Midoriya?"

"Do you think I could be a hero if I learned to fence with a sword?" I asked.

"Possibly, but then I would have to call you Farm Boy," she joked.

"As you wish," I said, remembering the beginning where I was barely paying attention.

"D-don't say s-stuff l-like that," she said, hiding her face.

What did I say wrong?

Later that day I asked my mom if I could learn and she got me enrolled at a place in the city.

During the week after school I would go practice swords and on Saturdays I would practice music. Jirou and I decided to learn a song called Bink's Brew where it was either upbeat and happy or slow and sad. For the next two years this would go on til that day. I was attacked by a slime villain and was saved by All Might, and after hitching a ride and asking him my question.

"No, I don't think you can be a hero without your quirk being active," the shriveled hero said.

He sounded like he was going to say something else but I ran through the roof access door and ran down the street. I then ran home as fast as I could and pulled out my phone calling Jirou.

"Hey, what do you need, Farm Boy?" Jirou asked.

"Jirou, in all seriousness do you think I can be a hero without my quirk?"

"I-why are you asking?"

"Just, please tell me," I begged.

"I-I'm sorry, b-but I d-don't," she started.

"That's what I thought," I said, hanging the phone up.

I grabbed the two letters I wrote a few months ago and put them on my desk with a sticky note. I grabbed my bag with the rope I bought years ago and went out my window. I walked to the nearby woods. I looked in it and back then headed in singing:

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Gather up all of the crew!

It's time to ship out Bink's brew!

Sea wind blows. To where?

Who knows?

The waves will be our guide!

O'er across the ocean's tide,

Rays of sunshine far and wide,

Birds they sing of cheerful things, in circles passing by!

Bid farewell to weaver's town!

Say so long to port renowned!

Sing a song, it won't be long, before we're casting off!

Cross the gold and silver seas

The salty spray puts us at ease!

Day and night to our delight,

The voyage never ends!

Gather up all of the crew!

It's time to ship out Bink's brew!

Pirates we, eternally are challenging the sea!

With the waves to rest our heads,

ship beneath us as our beds!

Hoisted high upon the mast our Jolly Roger flies!

Somewhere in the endless sky,

Stormy winds are blowin' by!

Waves are dancing, evening comes,

It's time to sound the drums!

But steady men may never fear!

Tomorrow's skies are always clear!

So pound your feet and clap your hands till sunny days return!

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Gather up all of the crew!

It's time to ship out Bink's brew!

Wave good-bye, but don't you cry

Our memories remain.

Our days are but a passing dream, everlasting though they seem

'neath the moon we'll meet again, the wind's our lullaby!

Gather up all of the crew!

It's time to ship out Bink's brew!

Sing a song and play along

For all the ocean's wide!

After all is said and done,

you'll end up a skeleton!

So spread your tale, from dawn till dusk, upon these foamy seas!

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho,

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hoho-ho.

I found a good tree and tied the rope finishing the song. Hope you understand why, Mom, J-Kyoka. I thought. The last thing I heard was a SNAP.

Kyoka POV-

"Midoriya? Izuku?!" I yelled, looking at my phone to see the call dropped. No, nonono. I need to go fix this now! "Mom! Where does Izuku live?!" I asked, running down the stairs.

"Oh, why do you need to know this?" my mom asked.

"I said something to him and I need to fix it now and he won't answer me," I said.

"Here, I can drive you there," she said, grabbing her keys. We got in the car and as we pulled up she told me the apartment number. I ran up and knocked on the door.

"Kyoka, why are you here dear?" Inko asked.

"I need to talk to Izuku, where is he?" I asked.

"He should be in his room, I haven't seen him leave."

I ran to his room and opened the door to see the lights off and no one was there. I looked on the desk and saw two letters with a sticky note on them. I immediately knew what they were and looked at them.

The first is for my mom

The second is for Kyoka Jirou

It read. I picked them up and walked out and set them on the table for Inko to see. I couldn't hold it together any more and fell to the ground crying.

The next week went by like a blur. I went to the wake and sat with Inko for a bit until a boy started yelling.

"Get out here Deku! You can't hide in there!" he yelled. I realized he was the boy who was beating Izuku up.

"Bakugou, this is a wake you can't yell," another boy said.

"Get out and fight me like a real man Deku!"

"Let's go," a third boy said as the two dragged Bakugou away.

I decided to leave before I caused a scene by making that boy regret even showing up. I walked home and laid on my bed crying. I never got to tell you how I felt.

AN-

So, I tried writing this fic before, hated it, and now I'm giving it a second go. I will admit that the Princess Bride thing wasn't my idea but I don't remember what fic I read it on. The wake comes from Yu Yu Hakisho which I highly recommend to everyone! The ship won't fully be IzuJirou. There will be a hint but it won't be the true ship. I'm going between IzuSet and IzuMina but I'm leaning towards the former.
