Hello everyone! I am Silvie and this is my first fanfiction I do hope you like it...

This oneshot was born when I was watching the show and I felt there weren't enough moments when hiccup really really messed up and need to ponder upon it..

Hiccup sighed. It had been a long day. The scenery in front of him was peaceful, but the same couldn't be said for the scene in his mind. He wished toothless was here to comfort him. Though the dragon couldn't speak his gestures and eyes speak for themselves. But it was midnight and everyone were asleep. At least he hoped so.

"I don't know what's going on now." He choked out looking at his braced arm and fiddled with his fingers.

They were returning from berk after a peace treaty with the bog burglars, who took their name really seriously. With all the snatching, thieving and the overall Viking anger issues, it was a miracle they were still one piece.

"Glad we're done with that." Stoick huffed.

But Hiccup wasn't listening. The edge was left unguarded and they needed to return back that afternoon. However, the weather wasn't on their side. They could stay one more day, if not for the frequent attacks. the dragon eye was stolen and there was nothing he could do about it. So many dragons were in danger just because of a single mistake. And he'd rather not deal with the aftermath of it. With the dragons all spooked, the huts all damaged and the place completely trashed, it was a headache that consumed a lot of time. They needed to be one step ahead of Viggo, which wasn't possible if you are picking up the shards.

Stoick sensed the young heir's discomfort and seemed to read his thoughts.

"Son are you sure?" he placed his hand on Hiccup's shoulder and turned his son to face him. "Bucket predicts a huge storm. Your safety is much more important to me. To all of us."

He spoke with such concern and sincerity, Hiccup's anxiety skyrocketed.

He took a shaky breath.

"Ye-yeah dad, we'll be fine. It's not like Thor has a grudge on us." He tittered rubbing the back of his neck.

Scratch that. Thor did have a grudge on them.

The first few hours were rather uneventful with an occasional thunder or lightning and slight drizzle. But chaos erupted when the drizzle turned to a full blown hurricane and dragon hunter ships were spotted.

The hunters were thoroughly prepared and shot every arrow with precise aim. They did manage to dodge most of them but things went downhill when a shaft lodged itself into Astrid's thigh.

With an ear-piercing scream she fell straight on the deck. Hiccup panicked to say the least. With the best warrior downed and his old fears resurfacing, he did the first thing he could think of.

Led them all to the ship.

Those hunters were skilled. It was almost as if they knew the dragon riders would be coming.

Fishlegs with undeniable bravery, fought the hunters pretty well. The twins, with their made up battle strategies confused the dragon killers and left them for Snotlout to finish it. Even Astrid was faring with the arrow pointing out of her leg.

Haplessly, Hiccup was having bit of a struggle. He was exhausted from all the chief training and the other tribe's heir wreaking havoc as soon as he turned his head. His back was stiff and his stump ached from the exertion. He was sure he was coming down with something, maybe the flu or a bug.

A hunter took his weakness as an opportunity. He pulled Hiccup's arm and twisted it with an audible snap. The young Viking cried and called for toothless. The dragon let out a plasma blast and signaled the other dragons to do the same.

It took time but finally the low quality dragon proof ship sunk and the dragon riders took off.

The ride back to the base was all hazy and after Fishlegs treated Astrid's wound and his arm, he could make out that Tuffnut and Ruffnut had identical black eyes and Snotlout was relatively unharmed.

They were all sitting in Astrid's hut where she laid unconscious due to blood loss but the gentle Viking assured she would make a complete recovery. Hiccup sat beside her bed, holding her gentle narrow hand. So delicate, but oh so dangerous. His friends decided to give him space and exited.

He wasn't sure how much time had passed but by the time he stood up and walked back to his place. It was in the middle of the night and toothless was asleep. He tried to relax but he just couldn't.

He walked to a cliffside and contemplated its beauty. It was all his fault that his friends were injured. Viggo was gaining on him and he had the dragon eye. The dragon hunters were improving and he had no idea what's going on.

He felt as though he was losing touch with reality.

For the first time, he was tired.

Not like the way you feel after running a mile, but the bone weary one, filled with heart ache that make you want to give up.

Hiccup let his eyelids droop and a few tears rolled on his cheeks.

Why must everything be so complicated?

so that's it...
