From that day, Aurora forced herself to shove people away. Clearly she couldn't let people get close to her. Honestly, she didn't even know why she thought that it would be different. Alice tried to talk to her everyday, but the redhead just ignored her. She was better off by herself, so that no one could get hurt. It would be better that way.
Her mother was worried about her, but Aurora just acted like everything was okay. She started to pour her focus into her school work, and tried to make sure that she would do okay. Sure, there were times where she cried herself to sleep, but she was okay.
Right? And as for her gift?
She figured out if she tried to not give into her emotions, she wouldn't have another episode. Of course, there were times where she would cause a sudden windstorm when she fell into a depressive episode, but for the most part everything was under control. At least under control enough. There were times where there would be a freak rainstorm that would last around a half hour before she got a hold of her emotions.
She was sick of it.
Why couldn't she be normal?
The school years blended into each other, as she went into her sophomore year and into the summer before senior year. She had to admit, the small town had grown on her. Aurora now loved winter, often finding herself walking through the town, taking in all of the sights to see.
The Cullen's still caught her attention, especially Jasper. She could see concern and worry in his eyes whenever he looked at her. Whenever she was around him, she felt calm, and okay for once. They never talked but she knew that if she needed to, he would listen to her.
She was glad that she would only have a short time left before she went off to college. Thankfully senior year would go by fast.
She began to take note of them, from the ungodly good looks, the eye color and how they disappeared whenever the weather got nice and sunny. Aurora knew that there was no way they were human, absolutely no way in hell.
Letting out a breath, she turned her car into the driveway, returning home from another long day at work. She worked at the bookstore in town, working weekends and would start working after school when classes started back up in August. It was an easy job for the most part and she was one of the highest paid employees there.
Her mother was still at work, as Aurora let herself into the house, shutting the door softly behind her. Slipping her shoes off and placing them by the door, she blew out a sigh as she walked to the kitchen.
After pouring herself a glass of water, she took it upstairs with her. Letting her bedroom door shut with a snap, she flopped down onto her bed. She had homework that she could get done the next day, which left the afternoon to herself. Grabbing her bag, she reached for the books she bought that afternoon. Four books were brought about the supernatural, and old myths and legends.
She was determined to figure out what the Cullen's were.
There was no way in hell that they were human. [Aurora Thompson Journal entry #1- August th 2004]
The school year soon started, and rumors spread on the fact that the Chiefs daughter, Isabella Swan was going to be starting in January.
Aurora kept to herself, and that weekend, she found herself absolutely determined to figure out what the Cullen's were.
Grabbing her notebook, she drew herself a list.
-they weren't human
-unnaturally good looking
-they were all "adopted" but they looked so similar
-edward always looked at her, like he could read her mind
-she was always calm around jasper- its was like he could sense her emotions
-they didn't eat at lunch, just messed around with their food
-whenever it was sunny, they weren't at school.
-they stuck to themselves, only talking when needed to in class.
Tapping her pen against her chin, Aurora reached for her glass of water and grabbed her remote for her TV and turned it on, letting some show run for background noise. Aurora grabbed the top book from the stack. She flipped to the first myth; fairies. Snorting out a laugh, she couldn't help but imagine the big burly guy, Emmett flying with sparkly wings. Shaking her head, she flipped to the table of contents, her eyes skimming over all the different myths.
Vampires was chapter four, and she flipped silently through the pages. The book alone by itself interested her.
Pale skin…..unnaturally beautiful….some vampires could have gifts… human drinkers have red eyes, vampires that feed on animals have golden color eyes. Both kinds of vampires' eyes get darker the longer it has been since they fed.
She had gotten the book from a Quileute bookshop on the Reservation. It was a small community but they had welcomed her in with open arms. She would for sure be coming back to that place. If not for the company then easily for the amount of books that they had.
It slowly started to click into place.
Their beauty
How she always felt calm around Jasper.
How Edward would always smirk just as soon as she had a funny thought or remark.
The eyes.
Fucking hell.
The Cullens were vampires.
That Monday, it was safe to say that things were awkward. She found herself shielding herself away from them further. In history, Jasper kept glancing over at her, and Aurora hid behind her hair as she worked on the assignment they were given. She had spent several hours the previous day thinking about it all.
She couldn't bring herself to talk to them.
She just couldn't.
How could she? Go up to one of them be like 'i know what you are'?
Moving through her day, she sat at a table by herself at lunch, not having sat with Jessica and her group for months. The Cullen's, they were all looking over at her.
'Get out of my head!' she all but yelled in her head, and she could see Edward flinch.
That proved the theory about him reading her mind.
But the theory about blood? It wasn't like she could accidentally cut herself.
She bit into her apple, running her finger along the side of the tray. She didn't even realize she snagged the tip of her finger on a sharp edge. Pulling her finger back, she saw blood slowly build up before falling onto the tray.
Well, her day was going amazing.
And that sorted the blood situation.
Her head snapped up, and she could see Jasper, eyes dark locked with hers. She reached for her napkin, pressing it to the wound. She muttered an apology under her breath towards him.
'Well that settles it, you, Edward and your family are vampires.' she thought out, and let out a laugh, seeing his head snap towards her. His lips started moving fastly, most likely conversing to his family, as she picked her tray up and took it to dump it, before heading out of the cafeteria. The volume of the room was causing her head to hurt.
She replaced her bag on her shoulder as she stopped at her locker, reaching for the container of bandaids she kept there. After tending to herself, she grabbed the books that she would need that afternoon and let her locker shut with a slam.
It didn't take a moment sooner for her to be slammed to the lockers by her shoulders, books falling from her arms as she stared into black eyes.
"How did you find out?" Edwards voice came out in a growl as he blocked her way out. His hands pressed tightly into her shoulders and she bit into her lip to stop the sound of pain escaping.
"Well hello to you too asshat." She spoke. "I'm just observant, you're not really that subtle you know? Now please move." He didn't make any sign of moving, instead, his grip tightened even further on her shoulders. Aurora took in a deep breath, willing herself to calm down.
"Move, and leave me the fuck alone. Trust me, you don't have to worry about me spilling your secret. Not like I have anyone to tell."
Aurora realized by that point, Emmett had pulled the man away from her and Jasper and the others were watching them closely.
She pushed him away from her, moving quickly to her next class of the day.
From there on, she ignored the Cullens at all costs. She couldn't get Jasper out of her head however. Aurora tried to keep her life as normal as possible.
But that soon changed.
It changed the day Isabella Swan started at Forks High.
