Disclaimer: I don't own Sailor Moon!
Usagi sat with her family in the living room of their house, watching some mindless programs that she did not care about enough to pay attention to. She stared at the stormy outside through the nearby window, yet saw nothing. She was too engrossed with her thoughts.
The peace she and her friends fought for was over. She knew it was only temporary when it began but that knowledge did not stop her from hoping. And now, with the destruction of peace, things were more complicated than ever. For starters, the youma were noticeably stronger, she noted, remember the trouble she and Sailor Mars had the night before.
She touched her brooch as she thought of her second problem. While Beryl and her minions were building strength, Usagi's own strength remain stagnate. She practiced with Kana constantly but she still had trouble controlling the powers of the Silver Crystal and with it, her new powers as Sailor Moon. Could things get any worse?
Usagi let out an audible groan and buried her head into her hands, attracting the attention of her family. Ikuko looked at her daughter with a look of concern. "Usagi? Is everything okay?"
Usagi sat up and pasted on a same smile she wore whenever hiding things from her mother. "Yeah," she said sweetly, "Everything's fine. I just feel a headache coming. Nothing serious."
Ikuko opened her mouth to say something to be interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. The housewife stood and walked to the door. She opened it with a smile. "Hello."
Yuri stood on the porch with a sheepish and shaken look on her face. "I-is Tsukino Usagi here?"
Ikuko nodded and turned inside. "Usagi! There is someone at the door for you."
Usagi silently walked over to the door. She felt her stomach drop. She found her answer. Yes. Things could definitely get worse and it did. She still pasted her smile. "Thanks, Mom."
Ikuko smiled back and returned into the house. Usagi's smile faded as she closed the door behind her. "What are you doing here?"
"I need your help," Yuri let her tears fall freely. "Beryl is back. She's going to kill me!"
"So?"
Yuri felt her heart racing. She had to get Usagi to help her if she wanted even so much of a small chance against Beryl. "Please. You can't be serious. She's going to kill me! You're my only hope. I need your help. I need Sailor Moon's help."
Usagi crossed her arms. "Why should I help you? How do I know this isn't a trick to kill me?"
Yuri gulped and shrugged. "I-I don't know how to convince you but I honestly need your help. When I didn't kill you a year ago, she was fed up. When I didn't manage to steal the Silver Crystal, my fate was sealed." She sighed. "Usagi, I know I did some really awful things to you and if I were you, I'd hold a grudge too but... But now please, I'm begging you save my life."
Usagi bit her bottom lip. She hated the girl in front of her. She want nothing more than to see Yuri at the mercy of Beryl and for the girl's last moments to be taken up by her feelings of remorse for destroying friendships with the only people in the world with the power and the hearts to save her. She wanted to see Yuri suffer.
But she couldn't, she admitted to herself with a sigh. No matter Yuri did in the past, she needed help now and Usagi could never forgive herself if something preventable happened. "Fine," she mumbled. "Pack your things tonight. You can stay here starting tomorrow. I'll keep you safe."
Yuri's tears became ones of joy. She cried her relief. "Thank you, Usagi. Thank you so much."
Usagi nodded. "But you get one chance. If you do so much as sneeze too hard, you're on your own. Got it?"
Yuri nodded. "Yes. I understand." She rushed to capture Usagi in a hug. "Thank you."
Later that day, the storm continued its merciless assault. The air was cold. Rain poured in sheets. The wind was unforgiving. The thunder was loud. The lightning was bright. It was truly a day when everyone should be inside sleeping or enjoying a hot drink in front of a fireplace. Yet, the grocery store still managed to draw a crowd, among it, Usagi and Mamoru.
Mamoru pushed his basket through an aisle. "What should we get?"
Usagi immediately went to work, filling the basket with various foods. "You know, I was looking for a reason to get out of the house but I'm curious. Why the sudden urge to go grocery shopping?"
"The empty kitchen was really bothering my mom," Mamoru explained. "I don't think she approved of my ramen diet very much. She demanded that I go to the store and buy some 'real food' immediately."
Usagi laughed. "That certainly sounds like something a mom would do. How are you handling it?"
"It's great," Mamoru replied. "It's great to have parents."
Usagi smiled softly. She could see in his face just how much having his parents back meant to him. "So have you decided if you're going to tell them yet?"
"About Tuxedo Kamen?" She nodded. Mamoru shrugged. "I don't really know how to tell them. I think I can finally understand why you keep the secret from your family. It's not something that is easy to say."
"If it helps, they already know about my powers."
"Yes. And they think I don't know about your powers. Like I said, it's complicated."
The couple moved down the aisle and piled the basket with more food. "Hey, Mamoru. Where are we going for our anniversary dinner tomorrow?"
"Do you have any preferences?"
Usagi shook her head. "Just not anywhere too fancy."
Mamoru frowned. "Why not?"
"Because the last time we went to a fancy restaurant, I got cake thrown in my face. Remember?"
"That was a year ago!"
"Yet, I remember the hours it took to get all that icing out of my hair like it was yesterday. Let's just have Motoki put something together at Crown."
"I do enjoy the coffee there. Crown it is!"
Usagi smiled. "Great." They continued shop, dodging the store's other patrons and talking about miscellaneous things along the way.
"It doesn't make sense," Ayaka cried, shutting her diary closed.
"What?" Motoharu mumbled, not looking up from the soccer game he was watching.
"My diary," she explained. "It stops the day before Mamoru's sixth birthday. And it doesn't mention any plan of us leaving or plans for our six year old son. I write everything in my diary. That is definitely something I would have mentioned. Do you know what that means?"
"Not particularly."
"It means," Ayaka started to explain, "we didn't plan to leave. Motoharu, I think Usagi and Mamoru are hiding something from us. I'm starting to think that the reason we're not in Mamoru's life is because something bad happened to us."
Before Motoharu could respond, the front door of the apartment and Mamoru carried bags of groceries into the room and closed the door behind them. "Here's your chance, Ayaka," Motoharu said. "Mamoru, why aren't we in your life anymore?"
"Motoharu!"
"I'll go put away the groceries," Usagi announced, eager to slide herself out of the conversation. She took the bags from Mamoru's hands, ignoring the glare he shot her and dashed into the kitchen.
"I'll get her later," he muttered under his breath. He cleared his throat and smiled his signature smile. "I don't know," he lied through his teeth. "I lost my memory, remember?"
"You were at an orphanage, right?" Ayaka asked. "They never told you when and why you were dropped off?"
"They didn't talk about our pasts," Mamoru said. He didn't have to lie about that. "They said our parents in the past didn't matter anymore. The goal was to look to the future and get adopted by new parents. As a result, I didn't know anything about you."
Ayaka stood silent, absorbing the information her son gave her. "I see," she said softly.
"Everything's okay now, right?" Motoharu broke the awkward silence that hung over them. "We're a family now. The best thing to do is to spend the time we have together."
Mamoru smiled. "Yeah."
Yuri stuffed the last of her things inside her already overcrowded suitcase. She didn't know how long she'd be staying with Usagi and she doubted that she would get the chance to come back home before Beryl's defeat. There was a knock at her bedroom door. "Come in."
The door opened and a small boy walked in. "What are you doing, Sis?"
"I'm going to stay...with a friend for a while," she explained.
"You're packing lots of stuff," the little boy said.
"I'm not coming back. Not for a long time."
"Oh," the little boy mumbled. He looked at his big sister with wide eyes. "Can I come, too?"
Yuri smiled, ruffled his hair and shook her head. "I'm afraid you can't. Right now, it's safer if you're not with me." She zipped up the suitcase and stood up. "I'm going now. Be good for Mom, okay?"
The boy smiled, nodded and gave his sister a hug. "I will! Have fun, okay?"
Yuri held her smile until the little boy ran out of the room. Once he was gone, she sighed. "So cute," a voice hissed. Yuri felt her stomach drop. She knew that voice.
The lights of her room flashed and then dimmed. Her bedroom door closed. A dark cloud appeared and out step a red headed queen. She had her purple stained lip upturned into a smirk. "I sure would hate for him to get hurt."
Yuri felt helpless against the evil queen. "Please," she struggled to say, her mouth suddenly feeling dry. "Leave him out of this. It's me you want."
Beryl crossed her arms and let out a humph. "To sacrifice yourself so easily," she mumbled, "You really don't care about your well-being, do you? Well, this just got interesting."
"What do you want?" Yuri demanded.
"A lot of things," Beryl said with a shrug. She stalked across the room and picked up a picture of Yuri's brother. "I want the Silver Crystal. I want Prince Endymion. Most of all, I want Sailor Moon dead." Yuri flinched at the third request. "And if you want your brother to stay alive, you're going to get me all the things I want."
"How?" Yuri demanded. "I don't have my powers anymore."
"I'm giving you another chance," Beryl said simply. She waved her hand and a black cloud surrounded Yuri. When the cloud disappeared, Sailor Oblivion stood in her place. "Don't mess it up, child. If you do, your brother will suffer the consequences." Before Yuri could respond, Beryl disappeared as quickly as she came.
Yuri walked to her cracked mirror and look at herself. Her make-up was darker. Where Sailor Moon's fuku was white, her was black. Her skirt, gloves, and boots were purple. She felt her supernatural strength returning. She was truly Sailor Oblivion once again.
She choked at the realization. She saw her reflection blur from her tears. What would she do? What could she do?
Usagi and the Chibas watched a movie from Mamoru's living room. She reached for the popcorn and stuffed some in her mouth. The phone rang. "I'll get it!" Usagi exclaimed. She jumped out of her seat and walked to the telephone. She answered it, "Hello?"
"Usagi," the person on the other line said.
"Shingo?" Usagi exclaimed in a hushed tone. She glanced at the Chiba family to make sure that she wasn't speaking to loudly. "How did you get this number, you little twerp?"
"You shouldn't write everything in your diary," Shingo responded. "Anyway, I called to let you know that your friend just came. She's in the guest room asking where you are."
"Oh," Usagi quieted her voice at the mention of Yuri. She was early. "Tell her I'll be there soon. Offer her some cookies or something." Usagi hung up the phone and returned to her seat.
"Who was that?" Mamoru questioned her as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"My brother reminding me to find a better hiding place for my diary," she replied. Mamoru chuckled. "Little siblings suck."
"You don't mean that," Mamoru said with a smile.
The couple earn shushes from the other two still trying to watch the movie. "Take it outside, you two," Ayaka demanded.
Usagi smiled. She had forgotten. While she and Mamoru had seen Monster House multiple times, it was entirely new to Motoharu and Ayaka. She stood and took Mamoru's hand in her. "Come on."
Mamoru nodded and followed Usagi to the kitchen. "Coffee?" he asked out of courtesy, already knowing Usagi's answer.
She shook her head and watched as Mamoru prepared black coffee for himself. "I have the perfect date planned for tomorrow."
"Oh?" Usagi asked with a raised eyebrow. "You went to not having a place to eat to a full plan in a matter of two hours?"
"It's a gift," Mamoru replied with a grin. "Try to imagine, Usako. First, we'll go to Crown and pick up our food." Usagi smiled and nodded, encouraging him to continue. "Then, we'll walk to the park. We'll ride the carousel. Then, we'll take a boat out on the lake. After that, we'll go to our spot," he spoke of the park's secluded rose garden, "and have an evening picnic. Just you and me. No interruptions. No cake."
Usagi laughed. "It sounds perfect. I can't wait."
Sometime during the movie, the storm settled. Usagi decided that it was time to go home. She smiled and gave her goodbyes to the Chiba and went home. She slipped through the front door of her house. "I'm home!"
Yuri responded immediately by greeting her from the stairs. "Hello," she said softly.
"Hi," Usagi said. She noticed how tightly Yuri gripped the stair rail. "You're early."
"I know," Yuri said. "I didn't feel safe there. I hope I didn't cause too much trouble."
"You didn't," Usagi said. She slipped out of her shoes and turned back to Yuri. "I just wasn't expecting you, is all. I would have been home to greet you if I knew."
Usagi's words were nice but her tone was crisp and untrusting. It unnerved Yuri. Did she know that Beryl had visited her? Did she know want Beryl wanted. "I wasn't expecting a welcome party," Yuri said and managed a weak smile. "Thanks for letting me stay here."
"No problem," Usagi said. "Just remember. You're on thin ice." The blonde picked up her shoes and walked upstairs. Yuri caught her breath as Usagi passed her.
Yuri followed her closely. This is for my brother, she told herself. She silently summoned a ball of dark energy and readied to strike Usagi in the back. Yuri shook her head and let her power simmer out. Just the day before, she could not stand the name of the Usagi in front of her, yet she could not do it. She could not kill the girl that offered her home and protection. Her brother would suffer for that weakness.
And that's the chapter! A lot happened, right? What should Yuri do? Will Mamoru's parents find out his secret? What should happen next? I'm contemplating whether or not to bring in Chibiusa. Should I? Tell me in a review!
