Late 1864
From that night in September, all three women stayed in that cabin in the Virginia wilderness. Cassidy and Abigail had their children almost a month apart, both healthy baby girls. Cassidy named her Emma like she'd promised Damon and Abby named hers after Stefan's mom Lillian. They raised the children comfortably in the cabin for about two months until one day, Grace told them shocking news. Grace was the only one that ever left, with her vampire capabilities she was able to get everything they needed and return undetected. While Grace was out and they were alone, the two women held their children while they were sleeping, "Cass, is it bad that I don't hate Stefan? That I want him to be with me more than anything?" The older sister shook her head, "I don't know what's right Abby, we love them both so much despite what's happened," a tear fell from her eye, "They gave us these beautiful little babies."
Abby looked over at her sister, "I wish they were here and could meet them, when are we going to find out news of what happened? Or even return to Mystic Falls?" Cass looked up from her child, "I don't know Abby, who knows when it will be safe to return." "But they killed all the vampires!" Abby exclaimed which made Lily stir in her arms, "The vampires are gone," she whispered. Cass gave her a half-smile, "But who knows what they did to the town." "What about father!" Abby exclaimed, which prompted a glaring look from Cass. "We don't know what's happened to him or anyone for that matter," she whispered. At that moment, Grace came in with supplies.
As she set everything down she turned to the girls and asked, "You two trust me, right?" The sisters looked at each other, "Grace, you've taken care of us, we know you don't want to harm us or our children, you've shown us that not all vampires are evil. Of course, we trust you." Grace looked to the floor, "I have something to tell the both of you, I'd think it'd be best if you put the children in their bassinets, I don't know how you're going to take it." The sisters looked at her with confusion draped over their faces, then at each other. They placed the girls down then stood up with arms crossed, "What's going on?" Abby inquired. "You might want to sit back down," Grace stated matter-of-factly
Grace took a moment to gather herself, "Emily Bennet contacted me and told me something very alarming, it's bad but it's also going to be good news so I'm not sure…" "Spit it out, Grace!" Abby exclaimed, then gathering herself she whispered, "I'm sorry Grace, what's going on, you can tell us." She proceeded to sit down, "Before Katherine came to Mystic Falls officially, she was already there. What I mean to say is that she saw Stefan and Damon before she officially came to town and when she saw them, she knew that she wanted them one way or another. So she made this plan, she figured seducing Stefan would be easier since you two weren't married yet, but when it came to Damon, that'd be more difficult because you two were married and had a child. She didn't want to compel them into it, she wanted to see if she could do it without that and well… Cassidy, I'm so sorry for what I'm about to say." Cassidy squinted her eyes, "What is it Grace?" Grace seemed like she was going to cry, "She made this horrible plan to have it seem like… like your child was gone." There was total silence. "What are you saying Grace? Daniel disappeared, after all this time with no ransom we assumed he...died," she choked on her words.
Grace shook her head, "Katherine wanted me to kidnap your child and take him to an orphanage but I couldn't do it. I was abandoned as a child so instead, I went to Katherine's handmaiden who was a witch. Emily gave me the name of her friend Marta, a witch from Lynchburg. Cass, Daniel is alive and he's with a woman named Marta, living in Lynchburg, waiting for you to come and get him." Total silence. "You're lying! That can't be true, that's not true!" Cassidy cried out, waking the children. Emma started to cry, she went over and picked her up trying to soothe her. Crying, she said, "Grace, please stop this, don't do this to me." "I'm telling you the truth, I swear, I can go get him tonight." Cass couldn't stop crying and sat down holding her child to her chest. Abby said nothing and let tears fall down her face and just looked over to her sister.
"I can go get him right now," Grace pleaded, "I need to lay down," Cass said hoarsely. Abby took Emma from her arms and watched Cass walk into the bedroom. "This is true Grace?" The vampire nodded. "Go. I'll look after the babies." She nodded and left promptly. Grace immediately left for Lynchburg and met up with Marta at her home. She knew there was so much truth to the story she wasn't telling the sisters, but she couldn't have them hate her. They were a genuine family and she cherished being with them too much to risk their relationship. Cass had been in bed for the rest of the day while Abby watched the girls and the early next morning, Grace returned with a freshly one-year-old Daniel and his belongings.
The only person awake was Abigail and as soon as they walked through the door she gasped and covered her mouth. She started to cry, "He's so big! Oh my goodness he's beautiful." Grace gave the boy to his aunt. "He's so big," she said with a big smile all the while crying. She went to wake Cassidy up, and when she sat up she instantly looked defeated. Covering her mouth, all she wanted to do was scream. "Oh, baby I thought I lost you," tears left her eyes as she embraced her baby boy. The cries overcame her body but the boy was unphased. Joyful, she squeezed her baby and rubbed his head softly. "You're so big, how did you get that big sweet boy?" Daniel looked at his mother, "Damon might never know about this Abby," she looked up at her sister, "None of this is fair." Abby got on her knees and put her hands on her sister's legs, "You have your boy back, that's all we should think about." Cass got up and thanked Grace for all she'd done. She proceeded to get Emma and lay down in bed with both of her children. All Abby could do was embrace Lily and look on in amazement.
ONE YEAR LATER
The children were growing up fast and all three women were getting weary of staying in the cabin. Within that year they got news of the Battle of Willowcreek. They found out the men they loved and their father had perished during the night. The grieving period continued on, but it was interrupted by sheer moments of happiness with their babies. After hearing that news, Grace thought it was time to present them with an option. She told them how Katherine had escaped death and was entombed under Fell's Church. They found out that the power of the comet in the next 100 years would give them the power to open the tomb and kill a desiccated Katherine. "If you two want, I can turn you into vampires, I have daylight rings made for you two and your children. When I went to get Daniel I made sure I came back with them. I didn't tell you this news at the time because you were already going through so much," Grace told them.
It took them almost a week deliberating about losing their humanity and eventually their children when they're old enough. The sisters decided they wanted vengeance, Katherine destroyed their lives and took everything from them. Grace turned them and they completed the transition with someone Grace had picked out for them. She taught them everything they needed to know, their motherly instinct was amplified so they were never tempted to hurt their children. They were in the cabin in the Virginia wilderness for a few months adjusting to their new lifestyle. "I want you guys to give your children the best lives, I might have to leave you for a while, but when you all return to Mystic Falls, I'll be there too to finish this," Grace told them. The women protested but they knew it was what was best. They'd all be a family again, they had the rest of eternity too. Grace helped the sisters and three children move up to Maine, she thanked them for being the sisters she never had then told them she'd see them in a century in Mystic Falls, the place where it all began.
Cassidy and Abigail raised the three children together in Maine until they were teenagers. They grew up knowing what their mothers were and that one day they'd turn too. The sisters told their kids many stories of Damon, Stefan, and their lives growing up with them. They knew they died in the Battle of Willowcreek, but knew nothing of the vampires in Mystic Falls or Katherine. They painted a picture that the relationships they had with their fathers were perfect until they died and not ruined by Katherine Pierce. Emma and Lily were turned when they were sixteen and Daniel when he was seventeen. They stayed in Maine for a while after the children were turned and were vampires for over a hundred years before Cassidy and Abigail told them they were going back to Mystic Falls. They traveled and lived in almost every state on the east coast and a little inland before making the trip back to Virginia around 2010.
PRESENT-DAY
"Do you think it's wrong we're not telling the kids about why we're actually going back?" Abby inquired. Cass scoffed lightly, "You mean that we've been waiting over a century to get revenge on the woman who destroyed our families and not just visiting our hometown for nostalgic purposes?" Abby smiled, "Do you think killing her is a worse fate than the one she already has now?" Cass pondered for a minute, "I want her to know that we have everything she ever wanted to take from us," "Except Stefan and Damon," Abby interrupted. Cass nodded, "I want her to know we survived and we were never going to let her win." Abby smiled, "Ah I can't wait to kill that bitch, all we need is for Grace and that witch Marta to meet up with us, the comet appears, witchy mumbo jumbo ensues and boom, we're in the tomb." "And Katherine is as good as gone," Cassidy finished.
It was easy making and saving tons of cash over the past century so the girls had no problem buying a very nice house in the suburbs of Mystic Falls. The two SUVs pulled into the driveway roughly around the same time. "Shit, this place is nice," Daniel remarked while getting out of the car, "Yeah mom, who'd you guys have to compel for this one?" Lily said, smirking. "Shh keep your voice down," Abby replied with a smile. "We bought this place for real, we're thinking it'd be nice to stay in one place for a while," Cassidy said looking at her niece and two children. "Yeah, this town seems nice, I'm so glad we're getting out of the city, too dirty and way too trashy," Emma said while grabbing some things out of the car. Everyone took everything out of the cars and moved it into the living room of the home. The kids went through the house picking out their bedrooms and the sisters did the same. Once all the boxes and suitcases were in the right rooms in the home, which was a matter of no time with enhanced speed, they all sat down on the floor of the living room. "I can't believe we've never come here before," Lily said glancing around the home, "Well, it hasn't seemed like the right time until now," Abby remarked, promoting a quick quip from Daniel, "Especially with our dads dying here and all, not really adding any attraction to coming back." "Daniel, don't be an ass," his sister replied. He looked up at his mom and aunt, "Sorry guys."
"Whose in the mood for a drink and some food?" Abby questioned, "Throw in a pint of bunnies blood and I'm there," Lily responded. The five filed out of the home and went into town. As they sat down to eat, Cass asked, "So what do you guys wanna do to pass the time, school or jobs?" Emma threw her head back, "Oh god, high school again," Lily laughed, "It'll give us a chance to scope out the boys in town," Emma giggled in response. "Please don't make me throw up before we've even gotten a chance to eat," Daniel stated. The two moms laughed, the waitress came by with two shots of Jameson which Abby and Daniel grabbed, "Come on kid, you're like 16," the waitress remarked. "I'm thirty," Daniel said sarcastically while compelling her, "Two more please." The waitress nodded and Emma and Lily laughed, "We're gonna look like kids forever," Emma said. "You two drink like fucking fish," Cass said lightly laughing, her sister smiled and cheered with her nephew then downed the drinks. "It burns so well," Abby said, making the table laugh.
All five made their way home and started unpacking their things. Daniel went into Cass's room, "Mom, I'm thinking of just being like a bartender or something. I really really don't want to go back to high school. I can't stand all the chicks hitting on me 24/7." Cassidy raised her eyebrows and laughed a little, "Baby, you're over a hundred years old. I completely trust your decision-making, whatever you think will make you happy while we're here." Daniel smiled, "You're the best momma," giving her a kiss on the cheek then leaving the room. She smiled, she loved her grown son so much but wished he stayed a little baby sometimes so she could hold him in her arms. She also wished Damon didn't die thinking his son was gone.
They arrived a little after the school year started, but Lily and Emma had no problem getting enrolled in school. They grew up being the best of friends and for the most part, kept to themselves. They were in school and Daniel became a bartender at the Mystic Grill, which combined some of his favorite activities: drinking and flirting. Cassidy and Abigail waited to find their place in Mystic Falls, while the kids were away, they spent most of their days anticipating the comet's arrival. They were also using their mother Cordelia's maiden name, in order to not raise any suspicion among the founding families.
