RRTAB: Read, Review, and Tell A Buddy!
Mamoru leaned against the wooden fence that stood a block from Usagi's house. Today was the day. Starting today, Mamoru was going to start his attempt to woo Usagi. With two strikes already against him—she saw him as a sparring partner rather than a man and now, she hated his alter ego as well—he had his work cut out for him. That wouldn't stop him from trying, though. Usagi was worth the effort. She was strong willed and beautiful. She was truly his princess. He peeked around the corner. And she was running his way.
He stepped out just in time to run into her. Usagi gasped and stopped her quick stride just in time to avoid hitting him. "Mamoru-baka! You're such a dork, coming out of nowhere like that!"
"Sorry, Usagi," Mamoru said. "I didn't mean to startle you."
Usagi was caught by surprise by his sudden diplomacy. "Oh… Okay, then. E-excuse me. I have to get to school. Sierra left me this morning so I'm super late!"
"Oh, how about I walk you there?" Mamoru asked. "Maybe your teacher would go easier on you if I explained that I was the reason you were late today."
Usagi scoffed. "My teacher actively looks for ways to put me in detention. I don't think you coming with me is going to change a thing."
Mamoru chuckled. "I can be extremely convincing," he assured. "Come on. What's the harm in trying?"
Usagi looked at him in surprise again. Mamoru going out on a limb for her sake? What was the occasion? She nodded slowly and started to walk with him. She glanced at him. "So," she said in an awkward effort to make conversation. "Have you spoke to Tuxedo Kamen lately?"
"No," Mamoru said quicker than he meant to. "I mean, let's not talk about him. He was rude to you, wasn't he?"
"Yeah," Usagi mumbled. "I thought he'd be a nicer guy than that. I mean, what kind of person kisses a girl right before rejecting her? It was just…cruel…"
Mamoru sighed, her words unknowingly piercing through his heart. He never meant to hurt her. He hoped she would one day realize that. "I know," he said. "And I'm sure one day-," like today, he thought. "—he'll realize just how stupid he was to let you go. Any guy would be lucky to have you, Usagi."
Usagi smiled a half-smile. "Thanks, Mamoru," she said. "I know it took a lot for you to say such a kind thing to someone like me."
Little did she know, it was effortless for him to say each word. He meant it so expressing it came easily. He would say everything on his mind if he thought it was enough to make her smile again. He glanced ahead. Her school was not too far off. If he was going to do this, he would have to do it now. "Tell you what," he said. "To get that jerk, Tuxedo Kamen, off of your mind, why don't we do something together after school? There's this new virtual reality laser tag game that I've been wanting to try. I'm sure it'll be even more fun if you were there with me, Usagi."
Usagi stopped in her tracks and looked at him as if he grew a second head. An apology, a compliment, and now this. "Are you… are you asking me out on a date?" she asked in clarification.
Mamoru stopped along with her and tilted his head. "Would it be inappropriate if I said that I was?
A blush started to cover Usagi's face. "N-no, I guess it wouldn't be," she said, looking away. "In fact, I think I'd say yes."
Mamoru smiled. "Great," he said. "Then I'll pick you up here at three." He looked at his watch. "And by the looks of it, I won't have to escort you in after all. In fact, you're actually about five minutes early."
Usagi gasped and grabbed his arm to look at his watch. "What!? Really!? No way!"
Mamoru laughed at the blonde's antics. "You should get going. You won't have that head start for long and you have something to do after school now! You can't get detention!"
"Oh, right!" Usagi said. She gave a little wave and ran to the school's entrance. "Bye, Mamoru! See you at three!"
Meanwhile, An watched the end of Usagi's and Mamoru's conversation from the window of the classroom. She narrowed her eyes. They seemed close. A little too close, in fact. It seemed like her dear friend Usagi was starting to mess with what was hers. That was a problem. "A problem that can easily be solved," she whispered under her breath. "After all, I'm still hungry and there's nothing like killing two birds with one stone."
She pulled a cardigan out of her pocket and looked at it. "All I have to do is get Ail to activate you and everything else will fall into place. You were always my favorite cardigan, after all."
She turned from the window to looked at her brother. He was busily talking with Usagi's cousin. Again. She rolled her eyes. The longer they stayed on Earth, the more he fell head over heel for Sierra like a lovesick puppy. With him like that, the hardest part of her mission was getting him to pull away from his little girlfriend long enough to activate the stupid cardigan!
She walked over to his desk and smiled sweetly at Sierra. "Hey, do you mind if I steal Ail away from a little while? I have to show him something in the hall. It'll only take a few seconds."
"Can it wait until lunch?" Sierra asked. "Class is about to start and I don't want you two to get in trouble for not being in the classroom when the bell rings.
An's eyes narrowed again. If this girl kept interfering, she'd be lunch! "Right…," she said. "Lunchtime, then."
Usagi stepped inside the classroom just as the bell rang with a sigh of relief. All the students sat in their assigned seat as Mrs. Haruna stepped in the classroom and began to teach.
Usagi smiled dreamily, not even attempting to pay attention to Mrs. Haruna horribly boring science lesson. She had a date! A real date with a real boy! Albeit, Mamoru-baka, but if he behavior that morning was any indicator of what was to come, she could easily find herself falling for the tall, dark-haired man.
Her smile faltered a little. Was it wrong that she was moving on from Tuxedo Kamen so quickly? She shook her head. No. He was the one to treat her wrongly. There was no point of sulking and staying stagnate for him. Not when someone else that she could possibly have a spark with was ready and willing to take her on a date! Her smile returned.
An glanced over to Usagi every so often throughout the class session. She huffed every time she saw that goofy smile the blonde wore. Something must have gone really well between her and Mamoru that morning. Whatever it was, she could not let it continue. Mamoru was to be hers and she certainly would not let that ditzy blonde stand in her way. With thoughts of hunger-driven revenge on her mind, she stayed quiet during the class, simply waiting to lunchtime to arrive.
Eventually, much to An's relief, the bell rang and the students began to file out of the classroom to go to lunch, laughing and talking along the way. She watched with tired eyes as Sierra and Usagi did the same. She stood from her own seat and walked over to her brother's, who was patiently organizing his books.
She slammed the cardigan on top of his book, immediately getting his attention. "This one," she said. "Activate it. Now."
Ail frowned. "You seem a little touchy, An…"
An growled. "I'm hungry," she hissed. "Cut the conversation and activate it."
Ail looked at his sister in concern. She was clear livid, to the point where it was actually making her irritable. Well, more irritable than usual, that is. He pulled out his flute. "Fine," he said. He closed his eyes and played a beautiful tune on his instrument. The cardigan began to glow with power. He opened his eyes and once enough of his magic poured into it, he stopped. He looked at An again. "It'll activate when you go outside."
An nodded. She walked out of the classroom without another word.
Ail sighed and watched her go. He could only hope that a nice meal was all she needed to calm a little. Perhaps she could even learn to enjoy life on Earth like he did. He stood and walked to the cafeteria to join his friends for lunch.
An stood in the hallway alone. She looked around to make sure that the hall was deserted and smiled when it was. She opened a window and threw the glowing card out of the window. She smirked as the glowing grew stronger and brighter. The card changed shape to match the picture it once displayed, a tall hawk-like creature with glaring eyes and sharp talons.
An smirked. "Shema," she said to it. "You know your mission. Don't fail me." Shema screeched out and flew out, biding her time until she was ready to attack. An watched the beast fly away and closed the window once she was done. That would teach that pest, Usagi, to mess with what was hers.
An was much more upbeat for the rest of the day. She answered questions with ease. She spoke to the other kids in class. She laughed at jokes and smiled a lot more.
Ail smiled at the sight. The cardigan must have done wonders to change his sister's personality so much in such a short amount of time.
The bell eventually rang and the students packed their things and practically raced out of the classroom. Usagi collected her books and stuffed them in her bag. She stood.
"Usagi!" Sierra called after her as she packed up as well. "Did you want to go to the arcade with Naru and me?"
Usagi gave an apologetic smile. "I'll have to pass…," she said with a shrug. "I already promised to meet someone here in about ten minutes. Think you can have a good time without me?"
Sierra laughed. "I think we can manage," she assured. She walked with Naru out of the classroom and the population of students dwindled until only Usagi remained.
She looked at her watch. 2:57. She picked up her bag and started outside to meet Mamoru.
Mamoru breathed heavily as he ran down the street. He finally had something to do after class, he finally had someone worth meeting with and his class ran late. "Why today of all days?" he complained with a groan. She'd be waiting for him.
Keeping up his pace, he looked down at his watch. "2:59. I'm only a block away. Hopefully she won't wait long!" He let out a sigh of relief once the school was in sight. He made a final sprint towards the building.
When he stood in front of the school, he took a few seconds to catch his breath. He looked at his clock. "Made it… And only three minutes late…" He looked around and frowned. "But where's Usagi?"
Did she get detention after all? He looked up at the classroom windows. No lights were on and he was there to see that she was on time today. Detention seemed to be a far off possibility at best. Perhaps she just got a bit preoccupied at her locker and was running late because of it. She did have quite a history for being late.
He sat on the steps of the school. There was no harm in waiting a few minutes for her to come out. A girl like Usagi was well worth the wait.
Mamoru glanced at his watch. 3:35. Alright, even with the stretched possibility of detention, Usagi should have been free to go by now. He stood. Something was seriously wrong. Did she forget? Was she simply being nice when she said yes and really had no intention of coming? No… She was a sincere girl. If she said she would meet him, then she would. It was in her nature. "Right?" Mamoru questioned aloud.
He pulled out his phone and dialed Sierra. "Hello?" she answered.
"Sierra," Mamoru said nonchalantly. "Is Usagi with you?"
"No," Sierra replied. "She said she was meeting someone after school so she stayed behind."
Mamoru felt his stomach drop. Although he knew it was a far- fetched possibility that she left without him, he still preferred it to his alternative thought: something had happened to Usagi.
