Surprise!
Frisk, Tina and Felicity learn to swim and Papyrus, along with Frisk's friends and family, set up her party. Papyrus ends up realizing singing the birthday song in Frozen Fever may just jinx you with shenanigans.
...
Frisk sighed happily, floating on the water just as Undyne had taught her. The water lapped softly around her, deliciously cool and comforting, and she was reassured knowing that if she struggled with floating, she could easily touch the bottom of the pool.
Next to her, Tina and Felicity happily treaded water, wearing their pink and cyan floaties as Undyne showed them how to get her arms in the right position. Little Benji sat on the side of the pool next to Alphys, the green haired skeleton boy wearing a set of green floaties, though seeming content to just dip his toes in the water as he watched his adoptive mother teach the girls to swim. After having drowned when he was still human, he was understandably wary of the water, and Undyne was letting him slowly get comfortable with it without pressuring him to swim before he was ready.
"You guys are doing great!" Undyne encouraged them. "So now that we've got floating and treading down, how about I show you some kicks?"
The three girls nodded and Frisk moved from her floating position so they could head to the side of the pool. Undyne had them hang onto the sides, showing them how to kick to keep above the water, and then showed them how to stroke with their arms and how to turn their heads to keep breathing.
And when Frisk made her first lap from one side of the pool to the other, swimming on her own for the first time with her sisters swimming beside her, she felt incredibly proud.
...
Papyrus too felt the same way as he stood on a ladder in the rec center, hanging the carefully cut out letters for his Happy Birthday Frisk banner. "I'm making today a perfect day for you! I'm making today a blast if it's the last thing I do! For everything you are to me and all you've been through... I'm making today a perfect day for you!" he sang to himself, making sure all the letters were in perfect alignment. His beloved girlfriend deserved the best after all.
And then from his vantage point, he spotted something horrifying. Jerry was stalking his way towards the beautiful, triple layer Victorian sponge cake Muffet had baked, about to stick his cheese puff and saliva covered little fingers into the cream.
"JERRY! LEAVE THE CAKE ALONE! IT'S FOR FRISK!" he yelled, causing all the monsters and humans who were helping decorate to look over towards him. Jerry just ignored him and reached for the cake.
Fortunately, Muffet, who was already standing by the dessert table, was quicker, and the next second Jerry was wrapped in a thick cocoon of spider web.
"Ahuhuhu, think you can just stick your grubby little fingers into my beautiful cake?~" Muffet asked tauntingly as she moved closer. "Come, my pet, I'll show you what we do with thieves~"
A massive monster that looked like a muffin with spider legs charged out of the kitchen door at Muffet's call, and Papyrus gasped in horror, not wanting anyone to get hurt. He started to climb down the ladder and was about to call for them to stop when Toriel and Asgore came running over and thankfully interceded, telling Muffet to stand down and Jerry to leave. Muffet reluctantly untied Jerry, and with a glare from Toriel, Jerry ran.
Right into Papyrus's ladder.
Papyrus yelped as the ladder tipped and he started to fall. Instinctively, he grabbed the first thing he could reach, the banner. But it couldn't hold his weight and he tumbled down.
But instead of hitting the ground, he landed in someone's arms, and the ladder stopped in midair before it could hit either of them. Papyrus opened his sockets to realize Aaron had caught him and Sans had caught the ladder.
"You okay, dude?" Aaron asked as Sans floated the ladder back up.
"I AM. THANKS, AARON. THANKS, SANS." Papyrus sighed in relief, then noticed his banner letters scattered all over the ground. "SADLY MY BANNER IS NOT." he groaned.
"Don't worry, we'll fix it!" a little Vulkin child, one of the many monsters who offered to help decorate for Frisk's party, called out cheerfully. With that, they, along with some of their friends, gathered up the letters and happily put the banner back together.
Aaron glared at the door where Jerry had ran out in the confusion. "I don't know whose dumb idea it was to invite Jerry."
"Probably Mettaton's. He got overexcited about the party and invited pretty much the whole Underground." Sans pointed out.
"I THINK IT WAS NICE OF HIM TO BE INCLUSIVE." Papyrus soothed with a smile. "IT'S NOT HIS FAULT JERRY FORGOT HIS GOOD PARTY MANNERS."
"Saying Jerry forgot implies that he actually had them." Aaron grumbled but changed the subject. "But let's forget about him. How much longer do we have before Undyne and Alphys bring Frisk?"
"ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF." Papyrus told him, checking his watch.
"Oh good, that's plenty of time. Can't wait to see Frisk's face when she comes in and sees all this." Aaron grinned.
"ME TOO!"
"Mr. Papyrus, the banner's finished!" the little Vulkin child called out happily. Papyrus, Aaron, and Sans turned to look.
But unfortunately it appeared the Vulkins, much like Olaf from Frozen, couldn't read or spell as instead of HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRISK!" the banner now read, BARD HAPPY FRISKY HIT! in now very slightly scorched letters.
The guys looked at each other, then burst out laughing. It was like it came straight out of Frozen Fever.
"Wow, you must really like it!" the little Vulkin cheered.
"It's great," Aaron grinned.
"IT WAS VERY NICE OF YOU TO FIX THE BANNER. THANK YOU!" Papyrus told them happily, though was secretly wondering how he would be able to fix it without hurting their feelings.
Aaron winked and mouthed, "I'll distract them," to Papyrus when the Vulkins weren't looking before asking. "Hey guys, wanna come help me with the balloons? Frisk is gonna be here soon."
"Yeah!" the Vulkins cheered and Aaron led them off. Grinning and feeling much more relaxed than before, Papyrus went to work fixing the banner, but not before taking a picture of it to show Frisk after the party.
Even if things had went a bit wrong, it'd be a funny story to tell later.
Frisk loved Frozen Fever after all.
...
Back at the pool a while later, Frisk was feeling refreshed from her swim. Undyne had taught her several strokes and she knew now if she ever fell in water again she would no longer be helpless. It was a great feeling. When it was time to go, she almost didn't want to leave the pool.
But surprisingly, Tina and Felicity, who never wanted to leave fun things, jumped right out and seemed to get even more excited than before. They got dried and dressed in record time and watched her expectantly as she pulled her purple ruffle shirt and black shorts on, bouncing a bit though it looked like they were stifling it.
When they left the changing room, Frisk noticed Benji was just as excited, bouncing from one foot to the other as they walked to the car.
"Hey, how about we hit the rec center and shoot some hoops before we head home?" Undyne asked casually. "What do you guys think?"
"Yeah!" all three kids cheered at once and Alphys nodded with a smile. Then they all looked expectantly at Frisk.
"Sure, sounds good." Frisk said with a smile though was inwardly confused and more than a bit suspicious. Somehow, she felt like they were hiding something. Just like everyone else in town had seemed to in the last couple weeks.
Though she had the feeling she was going to find out very quickly, watching her siblings and Benji bounce all the way to the rec center and Undyne and Alphys smile and share significant looks when they thought Frisk wasn't looking.
And as they pulled into the rec center parking lot, she knew exactly what it was.
The parking lot was packed with cars and monsters, many carrying gifts. They all smiled when they saw her. Colorful balloons were hanging from the door. Eyes wide with awe, she looked to Undyne and Alphys.
Undyne grinned. "C'mon punk, everyone's waiting for you."
Frisk didn't even have time to reply as Tina and Felicity grabbed her hands and literally dragged her to the door. She stumbled through it and the sight that met her eyes took her breath away.
The ceiling was covered in blue and pink streamers and a lovely banner, spelling out HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRISK! in Papyrus's beautiful handwriting hung delicately on the wall over the most gorgeous cake Frisk had ever seen. A huge buffet filled a long table, covered with a massive assortment of foods, and the rows of tables had a rainbow of balloons tied to the chair and bouquets of fresh flowers from Asgore's garden as their centerpieces.
And even more importantly, standing there in that huge room was all the people she loved, her family, her friends, and many of the monsters she, Chara, Asriel, and Tina had helped and the humans who had befriended them. They had all set up this huge birthday party for her. It was the first party she'd ever had. The first time anyone besides Tina had acknowledged her birthday.
She covered her mouth, tears coming to her eyes as everyone called out, "Surprise! Happy birthday, Frisk!"
Frisk tried to answer, to thank everyone, but she was so overwhelmed and happy that all that came out was a sob. Immediately, Papyrus and her family were at her side, looking worried.
"Frisk? You okay? Is this too much?" Chara asked worriedly.
"Maybe it is too much." Asriel said quietly.
Papyrus hugged her close, stroking her back soothingly. "Do you not like it? Is it the decorations? The food? Is there too many people?"
"I KNEW we should have used more pink!" Mettaton gasped.
"Do you need to sit down?" Toriel asked worriedly.
"I am very sorry, sweetheart. We should have asked you if you wanted a party..." Asgore started.
Frisk shook her head violently. "I'm not upset!" she cried out. "I'm just...I'm just so happy!" She smiled widely, tears still streaming down her face. "This is the best birthday I've ever had! Thank you guys so much! This...This is all so perfect! I love it." She kissed Papyrus passionately, then hugged her family, bouncing happily. "I-I never had a birthday party before..."
Papyrus tenderly wiped her tears away, then kissed her again. "WELL, FOR THIS AND EVERY YEAR, YOU SHALL HAVE A PARTY, AS LONG AS YOU WANT THEM," he promised. "I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL MAKE SURE OF THAT! BECAUSE WE ALL LOVE YOU, FRISK!" He then softened his voice, looking at her lovingly. "And I love you."
Frisk beamed and she hugged him tightly. "I love you too, Papyrus."
He nuzzled the top of her head. "Happy birthday, Frisk."
...
Next up, the party!
