Ok, this fic requires a bit of an explanation. The day after the finale aired, and Anon sent me on Tumblr an ask about how the ending would affect my Angel of Death Anne AU.

And, and this i swear to God, i answered by writing the shortest fic i have ever wrote, in the shortest time ever. It was a totally new experience for me, since i usually take way longer to finish a fic and have it go through several versions.

This one is the polished version of that fic, with a bit of an added scene at the beginning to explain what was happening. The original fic started with the dialogue.

Anyway, i hope you enjoy this!

The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.

—William Shakespeare, "As you like it"

Anne was surprised. No, scratch that. Surprised was when your friends throw a secret birthday party for you or when you find your favorite show got renewed for a new season.

The last thing Anne remembered, she was dying. The moon, possessed by the self-called immortal Core was heading fast towards Amphibia. Anne was set to remind that jerk of the true meaning of Death. Unfortunately, she was beaten. Her Reaper half was fine, but the human half had taken a toll in the battle against Andrias. Sasha and Marcy offered to help, but the stones that gave them power weakened them fast.

No. It was Anne's job to defeat the Core. She sent Sasha and Marcy back to Amphibia, promising to return. Lying to them.

Anne could take out the Core by herself. Really! It was essentially just a big-ass ghost, and she was an expert exorcist. But her human half was too weary to deal with the number of souls inside that beast.

So she did what she had to. She gave herself away. Even as she got her full Reaper powers back on Earth, she was never at her prime. There was always a wall. A dam, separating her human and reaper half, keeping the Void that was DEATH from overtaking her. It allowed both parts to coexist, let Anne be Anne. And she could always 'open the faucet' and let some of that eternal pool of power into herself. But what she was about to do now didn't have a name.

She'll have to wreck-ball that dam.

So she lifted the barrier and darkness covered her. She remembers little of her battle with the Core, as her sense of self slowly disappeared as her human half gave way to the Reaper. Was absorbed into it. The last thing she remembered was the Core's red eye, staring up at her.

Fear. For the first time in a thousand years, they felt fear of Death. Anne had won, even if she wasn't Anne anymore.

The next part is harder to explain. Apparently, the Stone Deity summoned Anne from the abyss her not-so-self had retired to, brought her to its own dimension, and restored her human half. And now she was offering Anne the job —the duty, of being the new Deity. Also, it had taken Domino's form to make it easier for Anne to handle the process the whole thing.

It didn't help. Like I said, 'surprised' doesn't even begin to describe this. Anne was absolutely 'flabbergasted'.

"Just consider it Anne," Said the Deity, in the shape of Domino. "You are already in possession of one of the greater powers in the Universe. You have mastered Death. Because you're partially mortal, you're not bound by the rules the old Death has. You are free to choose who lives and who dies if you wanted to. But you don't. Because you are responsible.

"Why not make it more, then?" proceeded the Deity as it licked her paw. "You have power over Death, Life, and the In-Between. Space, Time, and Energy, or as you know them, Strenght, Wit, and Heart, are pretty tame by comparison. And tell me, who is better to call the shots than the mortal who has power over death but doesn't use it?"

Anne considered the Deity's words seriously. She had made a few good calls as Angel of Death. However...

"Sorry, but I'll have to pass," she said.

The Deity was astounded. "What?! Why?!"

"Because it's too much," said Anne. "You're right. I think, as a Reaper, I did some pretty good deeds. But for every one of them, I also did something messy and wrong." She shrugged. "Besides, I'm still learning to balance me being human with me being Reaper. You said I'm the first mortal to be responsible enough to deserve this power. If I take your offer, how much human will be left of me?"

The Deity threw a fit, pounding the ground. Which, considering she had the shape of Domino, just made everything much funnier.

"No no no! You're the only qualified for this job," the Deity whined. "It's so frustrating and lonely here. All the power in the Multiverse, but you can't use it cause it would be... it would... be..."

"Irresponsible?" Anne added.

The Deity blinked several times. "You remind me why I made the stones in the first place. You're right. Power or not, some things are just not for you to meddle with. I gave the choice to the mortals. Guess that was just a big disappointment."

Anne silently agreed. "Now what? I'm stuck here with you, or..."

"Oh no! No no, I restored your human half. Plus, I'm not a warden," the Deity rolled their eyes. "You're as you were before you merged with Azrael."

"Azrael?" Anne asked. "Oh, you mean the Reaper that does the collection stuff? The one who made me?"

"Accidentally made you," clarified the Deity. "But yeah. Gloomy fellow. Taciturn. ALWAYS TALKS LIKE THIS. I like you better."

"You seem pretty cool too, Deity."

"Please," said the Deity, "Call me D. Anyway, when I repaired your human half I had to separate you two. He must be at work now. Don't worry too much about it Seriously. He may seem scary but he's a pretty boring guy."

With everything said, Anne summoned her scythe and opened a hole into reality. A portal leading to Amphibia.

"So, can I come and go as I want?" asked Anne. "Earth, Amphibia, all that?"

D shrugged. "Your powers, your call. I for one won't be giving more all-powerful stones to mortals for a while. It gets too... complicated."

Anne couldn't agree more. "What if it happens again? What if I need to tap into my full Reaper self and got absorbed into this Azrael guy? Or worse, what if he wants to retire too and wants me to take the full-time job?"

"As I said before, I believe you would be a good Full-Time Reaper slash Deity. But don't worry. He's just too career-oriented to quit his job," D reassured her. "But I suspect he'll contact you. Soon. Get ready. There's no reason why YOU can't absorb him."

"Just something for you to mull about," added D with a wink.

Anne took her words to heart and hopped into the portal. Back to Wartwood. Back home.

In the following years, and for the rest of her human life, Anne would find herself opening a portal to D's home dimension; always with a tabletop game or console or just her laptop brimming with movies. Did you know time doesn't pass in D's home? Crazy.

And well, Anne figured that, whoever had the gentleness of offering her a job, and take it so well when she rejected the offer, couldn't be a jerk at all.

We all need friends, after all.

So thats it. I know, its VERY different from what i usually write, because the way i wrote it was very different.

However, i do like how it turned out! And Amphibia ending ties up actually pretty well with this AU, except in this one, Anne and the girls can come and gone from Amphibia to Earth as they want it.

So i hope you guys like it. As usual, you can read my other stuff at my tumblr (wolfinshipclothing) and twitter.

And as usual, comment if you liked it!
