LEG 12: Part 9

The shed is a small, weathered building painted a dusty blue with a red wooden door. On it is a sign with our names and a nameplate with four locations.

Buchhandlung

Baan Teelanka

Munttoren

Kanda Myojin

They're not cities we visited but individual venues.

Edward points to the last one. "This was Japan."

"We were there for LEGs one and two," I say, flipping open my notebook. "It was the shrine. LEG 1!"

"Okay, let's go back to the top," Edward says, squinting at the long word. "I think this is German."

I'm preoccupied as Tanya and Jake take their place at a shed a few paces over. "Shit," I hiss. "Okay, Germany was LEG five, but I don't see this anywhere in my notes."

Edward snaps his fingers. "Remember that German newspaper?"

"Yes, Africa!" I flip the pages until I see my Namibia notes. "That's LEGs seven and eight." I scroll through the notes, turning the page as I move on to LEG 8. "Here it is!"

"Fuck yes," Edward whispers before calling out the next word. "I believe this is Thai."

"Okay." I flip more pages, going back to near the front of my little notebook. "That's LEGs three and four."

"The Upside Down House!" I exclaim, and Edward immediately shushes me. Both of the other teams are working on their clues, and I've given them an answer. "Sorry," I whisper, shrugging. "It was LEG 3."

"Last one," Edward murmurs. "Munttoren. That's definitely from a European country."

"We only did Germany, Monaco, Netherlands, and France."

"Oh, try the Netherlands," he urges, bending over my shoulder to help me scour the notes. "That's it." He jabs a finger onto the page. "The tower in Amsterdam!"

I flip back a page, remembering to keep my voice low. "LEG 9!"

We have the combination, but when I look around, I realize Emmett and Rose are already inputting theirs. "Hurry!" I yell, the tension of the moment getting the better of me. "Rose and Emmett have caught up."

Edward flashes his eyes toward them before narrowing them back on the lock. With the deft fingers of a surgeon, he sets the numbers—8-3-9-1—and pulls on the lock. I hold my breath for the millisecond it takes to click open.

At the same time we're cheering, Rose is chewing Emmett's ass for his "clumsy fingers" and Tanya is telling Jake "I told you so" after entering the wrong LEG number for one of the clues.

Edward has our door open in a flash, and I can feel the heat from the other teams as they breathe down our necks. Their chatter is louder now, but I ignore it in favor of helping Edward look through the wooden hangers, each holding an image, inside the shed.

"We need the first selfie," he says, shuffling by images too fast for me to help. "Got it."

He grabs the picture and moves out the door. We run to the rear of the shed where our world map is located, and he slaps that puppy on. I'm back inside the shed first, so he stands by while I locate the second image.

"Here's our second Japan selfie," I call, bringing it out and handing it to him. He takes it and runs while I look for the next image. "Oh shit," I say, noticing an image from the plane. I snag it from the wooden rack. "This one is on the plane to Thailand."

"I thought it was just Pit Stop selfies?" Edward pauses, questioning whether we should include it. "They're intentionally trying to trip us up."

"You think?" I don't know if he's right or not. "What if they aren't and we lose because of it?"

"Okay, fine." He waves his hands for me to pass it over. "I'll mark these, so if they're wrong, we can tear them down in a flash."

"Perfect." I give him a thumbs up, and while he goes to lay it on the map, I look for the next selfie we took.

All in all, there are over twenty-five images, and all three teams are now working on our maps. None of us can see the other team's world map to keep it as fair as possible.

As soon as I hand Edward the final image, I race with him as he places it on the map. "Done!"
