So I recently watched Greys, and absolutely fell inlove with Denny Duquette, I truly honestly dont understand why they had such a strong character, that went through so much, to get the girl, get a happy ending, and then just rip it right out from under us, so I decided to go back into fanfiction, and make it right. This will definitely be an alternate universe, where Denny is ALIVE woop woop! I hope you enjoy, I just kinda bring these stories out as they pop into my head, so please R&R and love, follow, and all that jazz.
Hope you enjoy~
Afterdeath
Seattle Grace Hospital, a place where the people who are broken come to be mended, where those with a life changing prognosis come to get cured, and for those that want to make the world a better place through the magic of Medicine.
That's probably why Isobel Stevens decided to join as a surgical intern, 4 years of med school, all paid off thanks to that short modelling career, and here now, standing in the OR with the other interns, her colleagues, her competition, she understood. This is what it will feel like every day for the next year.
Rounds
Izzie, George, Meredith, Cristina and Alex stood around the nurse station as they began debating what resident they were going to have as their attending for this year.
'I think it will be McSteamy'
Cristina chimed while the others barfed in the air for that terrible nickname.
'Plastic surgery? Really?'
'Yeah thats no fun'
'How about Dr Burke?'
'We also have Dr Shepard'
Izzie looked around the group and smiled as she realised that this would be her people for the next year, their ups and downs, they will experience together.
'Are you my lot?'
The voice of a male caught her attention as each intern turned to see who their resident would be, Izzie noted the tall, dark haired, gruff looking man who seemed to have an incredibly infectious smile.
'Hi, Im Dr Denny Duquette from Cardiology'
He held his hand out for each intern to shake, turning to Izzie, he shook her hand last and in that moment Izzie could not help but feel the lightning bolt burn her finger tips, it appeared that Dr Duquette experienced the same thing as he looked at his fingers in wonder, before clearing his throat and walking away, ushering for the rest to follow.
'Ok guys, so I'll give you an idea of who I am, I like to be called Denny, unless I dont like you. I had a heart transplant when I was younger and that pushed me into wanting to become a heart surgeon and a hop, skip and a jump away, here we are'
They arrived at the first room where a patient was waiting inside for their daily check. Denny looked at each intern as he decided who would take the lead with the daily update, he looked to Meredith, realising who she was and handed her the patients file.
'Your up Dr Grey'
Izzie watched Denny intenly, how he was very calm and caring to each patient, how he was kind to every person he met, be it patients, family, nurses or doctors. He was a catch and Izzie could not seem to take her eyes off of him, which was starting to drive her a little nuts.
Lunch
To Izzies dismay, the other interns were too busy watching a surgery to eat with her, so she sat on the outside table with her hotdog, in complete silence, that was until Dr Duquette decided to join her.
'Iz, you on your own here?'
Iz? Who the heck is Iz? She found her inner monologue asking as she watched the happy go lucky doctor take a seat accross from her with his fries and soda.
'Yes Dr Duquette, the others are watching Dr Burkes surgery and I was too hungry to pass up food'
She smiled sheepishly and took a bite from her hot dog. Denny nodded and smiled as he ate a fry.
'Food is definitely more important, if we had a trauma come in then the others would have no energy to assist me, so thankfully I have one sane intern that knows the importance of good nutrition, and its Denny'
He winked at her, a gesture that caused Izzie to blush, she nodded her head and finished her hot dog quickly, feeling hot under the collar as she could feel Dennys gaze and infectious smile plague her body into an oblivion that she could not enter without losing herself.
She stood quickly, dusted the crumbs from her scrubs and said her goodbye, leaving quickly before Dr Duquette could even blink.
TRAUMA
Almost as if he had predicted the future, a trauma came in, someone that had suffered a Myocardial infraction - a heart attack.
Denny moved quickly and swiftly as he ushered the paramedics into the room, called out to Izzie to assist with prepping the ECG to monitor the patients condition before moving down to prep the OR.
Izzie found it had all gone into slow motion, yet Denny, he was moving as fast as speed would allow, he had managed to prep the OR,get all the staff ready and came back up to the room to prep the patient, all in the span of 2 minutes, Izzie moved instinctively, taking the bed that the patient was on to the elevator with Denny holding the other side, pressing the button to head down to the OR and finding a moment to catch her breath, all while observing the patients stats.
'You ok Iz?'
Dennys voice snapped Izzie from her daze, she looked at him, eyes wide like a deer in headlights. He smiled as he realised that she was in shock and took a moment to calm her.
'Deep breaths now Iz, your gonna scrub in and help me save this mans life, if we manage to cut out that clot thats developed then he will have you to thank'
Izzie nodded in understanding, the elevator dinged and they rushed to 'operating room 2'
OR2
Izzie had managed to get her scrubs on, gloves on and was now standing slightly behind Denny, watching as he opened up the patients chest to show the heart, she was mesmerised, how such a small organ could control so much, how that organ was the only organ needed to keep all the other organs working, it was mesmerising.
'Dr Stevens, would you like a closer look?'
Denny asked, he was still staring into the chest cavity, awating Izzies reply. She stood forward slowly and let out a small, almost a whisper.
'Yes..'
He moved slightly for Izzie to wedge herself between him and the surgical instruments so she could get a better look and smiled under his mask as he noted the unshed tears in her eyes.
'Would you like to touch it?'
Izzie looked at him, shocked and then looked back to the chest cavity, wondering where exactly she could touch that wouldnt cause any damage.
'Here..'
He took her hand and guided it to an area where she could wrap her hand gently around the heart, feeling it pump under her skin, she laughed, a short gasping laugh, the kind of laugh where its not funny, its amazing, its experiencing something that you would usually never experience, it was holding someones life in your hands kind of laugh.
Denny smiled and gently guided her hand back out.
'Alright people, lets close it up'
Izzie was confused as she looked at Denny beginning to suture, had she missed something?
'You're done?'
Denny chuckled as he replied.
'Yeah, I just noticed that you were really curious so.. your welcome'
Izzie watched him, the cocky and confident aura that he radiates when hes in the OR is mesmerising, she couldnt watch his hands as he sutured as she was too caught up with watching his expression from under his mask as he ensured to leave as little of a scar as possible. This man was amazing.
Jealousy
'I see someone is sleeping with their attending..'
Alex Karev, the wannabe doctor that doesnt do well with failure commented as Izzie walked into the locker room.
Izzie frowned and went to her locker, choosing to ignore the comment.
'Well I think its obvious, I mean ofcourse he would choose the blonde bimbo with the big rack'
Cristina's comment caused Izzie to look down to her chest, feeling subconsious, she grabbed her bottle, took a sip and left the locker room, deciding she needed some time away from her so-called colleagues.
'Hey Iz, where's the fire'
Denny, the last man she wanted to bump in to at this point, strolling over, with that annoyingly perfect and cute smile of his. Izzie stopped and forced a smile as she tried to forget Cristinas words that were ringing through her mind.
'Dr Duquette, I just needed to go and..'
She sighed, running her hand through her hair and pulling it free from the hair tie
'I just need some air'
Denny looked at her, concern riding his brow and nodded, he held his arm out, allowing her to leave, she nodded her thanks and rushed away.
Denny walked past the locker room and couldnt help but over-hear the conversation between his other interns.
'I mean she is a looker'
The voice of George O'Malley
'Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've seen her in a magazine somewhere, perfect rack'
Alex Karevs annoying little voice spoke up.
'He's definitely going to give all the surgeries to her, I have a Phd from Berkley and an M.D. from Stanford, but yeah sure.. give the bimbo the heart transplant'
Cristina Yang chirped up.
Denny frowned as he debated on entering the locker room, and decided to stand there a while, he leant against the wall as he thought of how best to tackle the situation.
'Jealousy..'
He whispered under his breath and sighed, what on Earth can he do about this?
Izzie found herself outside, she stopped amongst the trees and closed her eyes
You'll be fine, they're just being mean, you can handle mean, you've dealt with mean, this is nothing, you can do this! Her voice reverberatted in her mind as she took a moment to prevent the tears from falling.
'Dr Stevens'
Denny approached her from behind, walking slowly up to her, she turned and sighed, allowing herself to smile as she figured that at least he would be kind to her, Denny is just kind.
'I want you to head down the pit'
Izzie found herself blinking in response as she thought of what that meant
'The pit?'
Denny nodded, he placed a hand on the back of his neck and avoided meeting her eyes as he carried on
'Yeah I need you to do sutures down there and help with any orthopaedics'
He nodded his head to her and then turned on his heel to leave.
Great, now even the kind doctor wants rid. She allowed herself to take a shaky breath and began walking to the ER.
Great first day.
