When Jonathan was sick, he felt the Scarecrow take over his body, as if trying to protect him while Jonathan was weak. Grandma Keeny never understood what was happening, she had tried to attack Jonathan more than once when he was with a fever, bedridden, more than once the Scarecrow had defended him. A son of the devil, Granny had called him, but for a long time, The Scarecrow had been Jonathan's only friend. He couldn't say his situation was any different now, but maybe there were people who cared about him.

"No one but me cares about you, Jonny" The Scarecrow told him. "We only have each other."

Jonathan was fighting a fever, while Scarecrow kept watch. At least at the moment he wasn't having a panic attack, frequent when he had to procrastinate on some of his tasks. Jonathan had never liked losing his organization, his control, even to unforeseen causes.

"I'm sure they're throwing us out on the street now. Think about it, Jonny, they were there before you. You're sick. Who do you think Gordon is going to choose? You're causing too many problems. Make an effort, don't show your weakness."

Jonathan knew deep down that Scarecrow was right, so he had tried to ignore his aching muscles and headaches, his general feeling of weakness. Until he got dizzy, threw up and passed out. He was now bedridden in his room, seeing everything through the Scarecrow's eyes. The three girls seemed worried about him, taking turns watching him. Bridgit was lying on her bed, Ivy was playing on the computer, the turn had fallen to Selina who had mysteriously returned to live with Gordon, that was weeks ago. No one knows what they talked about, she hadn't said anything to anyone, but everyone was glad to have her back. Jonathan admitted that he had missed her, something that The Scarecrow scoffed at. "I'm sure she would be happy if you had left." The Scarecrow said. "That way I'd have more room for her."

Sometimes it was hard to argue with the Scarecrow, because most of the time he was his voice of reason, sometimes he was scared that he might leave him, because he was the only constant in his life and Jonathan was never good at making friends.

"You scared us," Gordon said. He hadn't heard him arrive. The painkillers made him drowsy. -When you feel bad, tell one of us. You are trying too hard. You need to rest.

- I don't want to be a bother.-Jonathan said. Gordon smiled warmly.

- You're not a bother, Jonathan.

"And Scarecrow." He wanted to add the Scarecrow. "Or am I a nuisance, Gordon?"

He doesn't know you yet. Jonathan told him mentally. He doesn't know you exist, I'm sure if he knew they would accept you well.

"Do you really believe that, Jonny?" asked Scarecrow wryly. "Is that what you tell yourself at night so you're not afraid of being thrown out?"

Gordon was very different from Grandma Keeny, that's why he liked him and although he knew that he might not fully understand Scarecrow, Jonathan would know that he couldn't hide the secret indefinitely. He hoped that Gordon would be as compassionate to him as he was to the girls. It had taken time for him, but Jonathan was beginning to trust the kind of family they had created.

"Everything is very nice until it collapses." Scarecrow said.

Gordon was taking care of him, the best part is that he didn't force him to pray or bring the vicar to exorcise him. At least that's something, Jonathan said.

"Do you need anything, Jonathan?" Gordon asked. "Anything to eat, for your comfort?"

- I would like to see a horror movie.- Jonathan replied trying to get up.- They are my favorites.

"Don't get up," Gordon said, pointing to the television that was in front of him and that he hadn't seen. "Bridgit has helped me bring it, so you'll be more comfortable. I thought I'd go on Monday to buy you a television for this room. You will have to share it and agree on the programming."

- It's not necessary.-said Selina.

- You're spoiling us, Gordon.-said Ivy smiling.-But I'm not against you doing it.

"Ivy!" said Bridgit.

"What he wants is not to stay without watching football" Scarecrow said. "I'm sure he's using us as an excuse to buy a state-of-the-art television. This looks like one of the first to be invented. Was it his father's or his grandfather's?"

-I have a lot to do.-said Jonathan trying to get up.-The truth is that I don't really like watching television.-because he was always grounded without being able to watch it.-I prefer to read horror or psychology books. And I have a lot of homework to do, so if you don't mind...

- But if you're not attending school.-said Selina.

- I always like to do all the exercises in the books.- answered Jonathan.

"You can do what you want, Jonny. You don't have to explain yourself" said the Scarecrow.

"I know," Jonathan said, not realizing that he had said it out loud.

"Who are you talking to?" Ivy looked at him confused.

"With the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood"

Scarecrow…

"What? She started it! She acts like she doesn't see me."

It's that she doesn't see you.

"Of course, because I'm tiny, like Jiminy Cricket. I'm the voice of conscience."

I want to change my voice of conscience. I was not present when the deals were made. Maybe someone who doesn't behave like a seven-year-old.

"Ask the Fairy Godmother or Santa Claus. But if you see Santa Claus, leave it to me, Jonny, he owes us the bike we asked him for when we were ten years old. Besides, I want to take his sleigh."

Do you see what I meant?

"As nice as I am. Some say I'm cuddly and they squeal when they see me."

Scary.

"For the case it is the same".

- With no one.-Jonathan replied.-I was just thinking out loud.

"Hears!"

"We'll still go buy the television," Gordon said. "And I was thinking maybe you all should start school."

"NO!" the girls yelled.

"I won't go!" Selina said.

"I'm leaving home!" Ivy said.

"I don't think it's a good idea," said Bridgit.

Jonathan didn't say anything, he just watched the situation. Scarecrow laughed.

- It's non-negotiable.-said Gordon.-I can't let you go wherever you want, you need to go to school or I could get into a big mess with the authorities.

- You're not our father.-said Ivy.

"Ow, that hurts." The Scarecrow said seeing the pain in Gordon's eyes. "The gentleman here was already getting his hopes up. Make it difficult for him, Jonny, if he's going to start acting like a father be the rebellious son all fathers hate."

- I would love to.-Jonathan said.

"Coward"

- Then it's decided.-Gordon said smiling.-Thank you, Jonathan, I appreciate the gesture.

The three girls glared at him.

"You're not very good at making friends, are you, Jonny? Or do you want to become Gordon's favorite? Do you think he's going to accept us as his sons?"

Shut up, Scarecrow. How did I get into this mess?

"I know it"

I do not want to talk to you.

"Well, he's done, I'm pissed off, I'm not talking to you anymore!"

Finally.

But there was no answer, Scarecrow had fallen silent.
