Let me tell you a story, one I was told by my own grandfather when I was your age.
It started many years ago, in a time before Pokeballs or unified leagues, it was a time of great strife and hardship. One day, a large island was in danger, an old Xatu showed the Elders that a great calamity would soon come, and the Elders told the others. None knew what would happen, but they did all they could to prepare, but no one could have predicted that the Five Great Volcanoes, who were seen as guardians of the island, would all erupt at the same time.
By luck alone, none of the villages were harmed from the spewing flames or flowing magma, due to this the entire island had a grand feast and praised the Legends for the good fortune. But soon they discovered the true danger.
When in the morning they didn't see the sun, hidden behind great clouds of ash, they dismissed it, when they never once saw the sun the day after, they got weary, but once again dismissed it, but when the morning of the next day came and no sun was to be seen, they all felt horror, for they realized the true terror of what happened, that the sun would be hidden for many days to come, and surely they would die from the cold in that time.
They all prayed and cried to the Legends, but none answered their calls, and the island had no Pokemon powerful enough to help them. They felt despair, until one man chose to ascend the greatest and tallest of the Five Great Volcanoes to try once more and plead to the Legends. When he ascended the mountain, he saw in its core a glow, and in that glow a Pokemon, but none like was ever seen before.
It was larger than any on the island, held aloft on sig great wings of fire. Its heat could only be compared to the sun itself, and in that heat was a kindness and wisdom the likes that the man had never felt before. The man declared this Pokemon as an Avatar of the Legends and named it Volcarona, meaning The Great Volcano, and pleaded with the great being to help them. Volcarona smiled, trilled a comforting tune, and flew to the skies.
When the man returned and told the rest what he saw, they didn't believe him until the sky was once again lit up with light. It was the great Pokemon from the volcano, Volcarona, replacing the sun with its own light.
For 10 days Volcarona shone as the sun while the clouds of ash disappeared in the winds. When all clouds disappeared, Volcarona descended from the heavens and was praised by the islanders. Once again, Volcarona just smiled and closed its eyes, never to open again.
The people of the island buried the great Pokemon in the heart of the largest volcano that it called its home from before, and discovered a single egg that they chose to raise, and they all swore to remember the great being forevermore.
That is why, whenever we start a fire, we praise the Great Volcano to keep us warm during the night and why once a year we go to the Great Volcano Shrine and offer our thanks to the family of Larvesta that now call it home.
