XXX Chronicler's Layer XXX
John sat in the library, feet upon the edge of the gigantic circular vision pool inches away from him. His eyes were filled with concern and worry. He unzipped his jacket with one of his hands and removed a small wrinkled paper. Avalar's Final Day was printed at the top.
On the paper, there was a picture of two dragons fighting, and as he had always done, John studied the picture, searching for clues he might have missed.
"John?"
Hearing Ignitus's voice, he put the piece of paper back into his jacket before zipping it back up completely. Once that was done, he crossed his arms "What is it Ignitus?"
There was urgency in Ignitus's face. "I need to ask you".
John kept his gaze on the pool. "Ask what?"
"If beating Ghost and Reaper once was all it took to prevent Malefor from resurrecting, then why did we need Trent?"
John watched Ignitus uneasily. "That one battle didn't decide Malefors fate," John replied.
"Then why did you send Trent back to his world?"
"What?!" he shouted angrily, standing in his chair.
John waved his arm at the pool, and as he did he so, a reflection of a purple ringed portal appeared on the water. John slammed his fist on the rim of the pool. "Shit!"
Ignitus now looked John with concern. "If that portal didn't belong to you, then who did it belong to?"
"I don't know" John answered
But something was changing at the pool. The portal had changed to an image of a dragon, Haze.
The black color on Haze's scales had chipped away.
"No," John said, "Malefor, you bastard."
Ignitus too came to realize what the image in the pool meant. "The smoke… is that…"
John finished his question, "Malefor's power. The reason Trent became a black dragon in the first place was because he took an attack that was meant for Cynder. An attack that was meant to corrupt her and have her use all her energy to revive Malefor. Since that power never belonged to Trent in the first place, it split from him and is now headed back to its owner."
"While that may be true," said Ignitus hopefully, "Malefor won't be revived. Trent won't be using his energy to help restore him."
John shifted his gaze to the ceiling. "It won't matter. His power was with Trent for so long that it began to siphon energy little by little, he could never have known."
Ignitus lowered his gaze to the floor. "Should I contact Spyro?"
"As good as Spyro is, he still hasn't gained back two of his elements and let's not forget that even with him at his best, it was still difficult for him and Cynder to beat Malefor" he replied sadly.
The Chronicler looked as his human friend with worry but said nothing.
"It looks like I have to choose Avalar over my family yet again," John said as he left the room.
XXX New York XXX
After getting out of the alley, I leaned against the wall of the building on my left, still trying to process what had just happened. My mind had been in denial. Krystal was going to find out how much I loved her, but then this garbage had to happen.
Summoning what strength I had, I found some stairs to the front of the building and sat on the first step, anger started to surface.
"This is just complete bullshit, I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.
Took a few hours but the feeling of anger just finally went away. Cars passed by, and people were going on about their lives as if I hadn't just come from a different world. I got up.
Down at the street level, I turned back at the alley I had walked out of. No portals there. "Should probably call someone to come and pick me up," I said idly.
Remembering again that my phone had been in my pocket when I disappeared, I reached down into my pocket and pulled the device out, it was at full battery.
Before I could even dial a number, though, everything started to get brighter, to the point that I couldn't see anything anymore. This pissed me off.
I started to get the feeling that someone was behind me. Someone… familiar.
"First, I'm kicked from the dragon world and now let me guess, you suddenly need me again" I said turning around to find John appear through the light.
"For the record, I never kicked you out. The portal you fell through didn't belong to me."
"Then wait, who did it belong to?" I questioned, the thought never have crossed my mind.
"I don't know, but I can definitely say though that it wasn't Malefor. Only those connected to the orig—" He cut off midsentence and looked at the ground.
"Connected to what?" I asked.
"For now that doesn't concern you. What does is how you will be getting back to the dragon realms. You still have things to do."
"Well, can't you just teleport me back like when I came the first time?"
"No, I don't have the energy to do it again. Someone else I know does though."
I eyed John suspiciously; something felt off about that statement. "How can you know someone in this time? You are a WW2 Veteran."
A smile ran across his face. "You'll see."
He turned around and began to fade into the light.
I reached my arm for him. "Wait John, where do I find this someone?"
"Just look for a man in a restaurant drinking coffee," he said before vanishing completely.
Rather than fading, the light intensified to the point that I had to squint to see anything. I closed my eyes and waited, just waited, for anything, anyone.
After a few moments, I started to hear city noises again. Opening my eyes, I found myself back on the sidewalk by the alley.
It took me some time walking along the traffic-ridden streets, looking upwards looking for restaurant signs. The first café that looked like it served coffee was called Benny's. That was a start.
XXX 3 hours later XXX
So here I was in the 10th restaurant… at least, I think it was the tenth. I lost count after the 5th one. About 80% of the people here were drinking coffee.
My head dropped forwards in sheer hopelessness. "You know, I don't think John knows that everyone in a restaurant drinks fucking coffee."
I was turning to leave the restaurant when something hit the back of my mind. It was like a strong power, emanating from somewhere, and with that feeling I walked back in and looked around at the many people trying to find the source.
"You know, with a face like that, somebody would say you're looking for something or someone."
The speaker was a man sitting by himself with a steaming cup of coffee, around 25 years. He wore an all-black jacket that was unzipped, showing a red shirt and blue jeans.
"More like sent to find someone," I replied. "I don't suppose you're the one who I'm supposed to find?"
The man smirked, "Depends. Did my so-called loving grandfather send you? Overfang?" He sipped his coffee.
"Yeah, Name's Trent, and by the sound of it, I'm guessing you two aren't close" I answered.
Setting down his coffee, the man proceeded to look me straight in the eye. "What's between us has nothing to do with you, and as for my name, well, you can call me Scorch."
I gave him a curious and puzzled look. "Is that your last or first?"
He took another sip. "Neither. That would be my dragon name if I ever went to Avalar."
His mug was almost empty now. He placed it on the slider and sat up in his chair. "Do you know why you're here?"
"John said you could help get me back to Avalar."
"Well, that's the half of it," he said.
Puzzled, I leaned over the table "half?"
Scorch sighed. "Didn't John tell you? Before you go back to Avalar, I need to train you for when you fight Malefor."
I froze. You would have thought that I found out I was with a serial killer. "You got to be kidding me. There is no way Malefor could possibly be back, okay? I watched his prison or tomb or whatever get buried by rocks! And how would you even expect me to fight Malefor? I don't know if John told you this, but I'm not the best of fighters. I would only last about maybe 30 seconds against the Dark Master."
"Which is why I just said I was going to train you."
I tried to process it all.
"You'll be fine, based on what John has told me," he said. "I have about three weeks to train you. There are about three weeks until Malefor returns. It's all convenient."
His hand ran through this hair. "And your element… or elements, as I should say, what are they?"
"Shadow was my first element, and fire is now my second; got it at a good time as well."
"Well then, we still need to find out what your two other elements are." Scorch said as he pushed in his chair and left money on the table.
I looked at him in shock "Wait a minute, I control four elements?"
As we left the restaurant and started to walk down the street, I found myself, once again, in a state of confusion.
"How am I able to control four elements?" I asked him as we waited at the traffic light.
"Dragon trivia 101 for you right now, there are two types of dragons. Type one can control only one element, and type two can control a maximum of 4 elements, examples being you, John, Cynder and Spyro."
"So how do we figure out my two elements?"
"With training" he answered with a grin.
Across the street, there was some building with a heavy-duty door. He unlocked it, and together, we entered.
The inside was massive. Like, football-field-sized. There looked to be about eight smaller cubicles or something going inwards, and to my left was a hope bunch of weights, rope and other equipment. The closest station contained around eight electric rods that had coils wrapped around them, to the left of that, there was a pool with multiple poles around it.
"This place was built by my grandmother, who in case you forgot, was once a dragon. She built this place for her children to help teach them how to control their elements, a dragon-training ground for humans, you could say." He flipped switches, illuminating the enormous room.
I watched in awe as the place lit up. Damn, this place is tricked out.
"So which one do I start with?" I asked.
Scorch took a remote from his pocket and pressed one of the buttons on it.
*zzzchh* I turned to my right to find a lightning bolt coming at me from station one.
Stunned in amazement by the bolt, I had completely forgotten to try and move out of its path. "AAAH!" I yelled as the bolt made contact, sending me flying to the wall.
The impact surged through my back and front. Not only that, but my muscles were jittery due to the electricity.
"It's seem like the electric station is attracted to you," Scorch said with a straight face.
I was not amused. "Yeah, very funny" I groaned.
"Then this ought to be hilarious," Scorched replied pressing the button yet again which sent another bolt towards me.
Being farther away this time, I managed to dodge the new one, but just barely.
"Ha!" I laughed triumphant only to turn forwards to see another bolt coming towards me "OOOH!"
Scorched only grinned again "By the time I'm done with you, you're going to wish that you already had faced Malefor" he said as he pressed the button once more.
Alright another chapter done, sorry if this one was a bit boring but I need a chapter that gave some information after my previous one. Also while I think the beginning of this once came out alright I think the end wasn't as well done.
Please REVIEW! : )
