I wrote this before pride month but haven't posted it yet, so, here we go! Pride is for everyone, including trans people. Thus- trans Huey.
I'm a trans person myself (they/them) and that's why I write stuff like this. I write about trans people because I'm trans, I write about gay people because I'm bi and people on the ace spectrum because I'm ace. Some people think that to include anything other than cis heterosexuality in a story it has to serve a purpose. But we just exist and our stories should be allowed to just exist.
So, happy pride. Try to keep it positive.
Louie didn't know how he'd ended up in the front seat all he knew was that Dewey and Webby were passed out on top of each other in the back and that Huey seemed anxious.
Louie shifted in his seat so he could get a good look at Huey and got up the guts to address whatever was brewing in Huey's tumultuous mind.
"What's eating you? I thought you had fun this weekend." Louie wouldn't call their little camping trip fun since that wasn't his bag but he knew Huey and the others had liked it.
"I did, I did, it's not that." Huey seemed dismissive and uncomfortable.
"Dreading going back to classes?" Louie asked, knowing that probably wasn't it. If anything, Huey was probably looking forward to all those stupid nerd classes.
"No, it's not that either…"
"Then what's up, dude?"
Huey cringed at the word.
"Sorry, I won't call you that if you don't want me to," Louie said quickly, wondering if that had anything to do with Hue's mood.
"Thanks, Louie."
"Yeah, of course. You want to tell me what's bothering you?"
"Well. I'm not sure." Huey admitted.
"I'm not doing anything right now if you want to run what you do know by me."
"I've been feeling really weird," Huey confessed.
"Weird how? Are you sick?"
"I wouldn't have come on this trip if I were sick. I'm confused, not irresponsible."
"I know but, well, you never know."
"I'm not sick. I don't think I'm sick. I just… I've been feeling really sad lately?"
"Depression?" Louie guessed, "Or maybe you're burnt out? You've been working really hard, Hue."
"I don't think that's it. I just get sad when I look in the mirror and I see myself." Huey went quiet for a second before continuing, "I think I want to be someone else."
That caught Louie off guard.
"Someone else? Like who? Like Dewey? Or like me?"
"...No. Not like that. I… It's stupid, Louie. Forget it." Huey seemed more discouraged than ever.
Louie pressed his lips together, wanting to help Huey with this identity crisis. Because no one deserved to hate themself, "Like Webby?"
Huey's breath caught, glancing in the rearview at where Webby was dozing.
"Do you want to be like Webby?" Louie asked again.
"I…" Panic rose in Huey's voice.
"Huey, it's okay. It's okay if you're not a boy. It's okay if you're not cis. It's okay if you don't know what you are. You're still a triplet. Still one of us. And we'll always love you." Louie offered Huey a smile and Huey blinked back tears.
"Lou, I think I'm a girl." A smile broke across Huey's face and then Louie's.
"Then I'm proud to call you my sister."
Huey inhaled sharply at the word, tears beginning to stream down her face.
"Huey? Are you alright?" Louie asked worriedly.
"Can you say that again?" Huey requested.
"Of course. I'm so, so proud to call you my sister."
"I like how that sounds," Huey mumbled.
"It fits you," Louie complimented.
"My name is Huey, and I'm a girl."
"This is my sister Huey, she's a nerd."
"Hey!" Huey laughed, waking the duo in the back.
"Keep it down, man." Huey's smile dropped for a second, but Louie gave her an encouraging smile.
"Actually, Dewey. I think. I um. I know… Well."
"You've got this," Louie whispered.
"I'm trans. I'm a girl."
"Okay. Keep it down, sis," Dewey said, going back to sleep.
Webby reached up and put her hand on Huey's shoulder, "It's nice to have another girl in the family. Let me know if you ever need anything."
"Thanks, Webby."
"Anytime." Huey was practically glowing as she drove, feeling euphoric as her family offered their acceptance and love.
"Hey, Huey?" Louie said as the car settled into silence once more
"Yeah?"
"You drive like a girl."
Huey burst out laughing, lit up from the inside out, "I should hope so."
